chinese new year parade, san francisco tradition that always draws tens of thousands of people. they fill the streets there in downtown. >> yes, we will be there and ktvu will be broadcasting the parade. you can join in on the celebration. while the parade happens rain shine, it looks like we'll escape the wet stuff tonight. we will need to bundle up though. >> we will not escape the cold. it is going to be chilly so dress with a -- with winter weather in mind. we will be dry tonight. partly cloudy but temperatures on the cool side. let's take a look at what is going on as we begin your saturday morning. and nice shot there with mostly clear skies, temperatures freezing and below freezing in some areas. take a look at the numbers in just a moment. let's take a look at the satellite view, we have the northwest flow in place. so for today and futurecast

and a chance for rain coming our way, more on this in the extended forecast coming up. >> thanks, rosemary. usgf is reporting a earthquake occurred at 3:42 this morning. it's so small normally we wouldn't mention it. about 20 minutes northeast in contra costa watching a swarm of earthquakes. the cluster of quakes rubbled through the danville area early friday morning to noontime, a magnitude 3.5 earthquake followed by a 2.8 quake, minutes later, that was big enough to cause bart, scientists say no one knows when this shakes is going to stop. >> there is no clear start for stop necessarily and no clear order to the magnitudes of the earthquake. >> the usgf says there has been six other swarms since the 1970s, the shortest swarm lasted two days.

the longest lasted 42 days. quakes are tied to the fault line. this morning there is new fallout from last october's wildfires in earth north bay. more places in santa rosa may have contaminated water. the city established a water advisory area in the fountain grove neighborhood. water was not safe to drink, but tests taken in the last month showed traces of benzien. telling the press they are testing including the coffee park neighborhood. replacing the city's water system could cost up to $20 million. a san jose man remains in jail after police say he robbed three banks in the south bay in less than a week. releasing the surveillance photo of one of the robbery, 29- year-old is a chase bank over a four day period overly last month. each time the suspect enter

ited the banks, handed the teller a note demanding money and left with the cash. east bay congressman is calling for an independent review of recent close calls at airport across the country including sfo. congressman says reviewing near misses will help determine whether there are any patterns related to these incidents calling for a government accountability study to prevent close calls. >> looking at best practices when it comes to risk assessment and in all professions. and trying to learn from these things to make sure that we are not missing anything, because their near misses can be a tragedy and it's important that the experts look at it. >> previous study on close calls at airports which was done back in 2011, representative say it's time to update the information and follow through with recommendations. first responders may soon have a faster way to get to

sick and injured travelers at sfo. sometimes a bicycle is faster in the terminals than fire trucks or ambulances. san francisco examiner the airport is going to launch a bike medic program. the examiner says the airport will spay the san francisco fire department for that service. rick gates has pleaded guilt i don't to federal conspiracy and lying to the fbi. under the plea agreement gates has agreed to cooperate in special council robert mueller's investigation into the possible collusion into the trump campaign. charges against gates do not involve any conduct connected to the trump campaign. former trump campaign chairman paul manafort is charged but maintains his innocence. >> is he going to give dirt on paul manafort, mueller think he has dirt on the trump campaign? you know, my guess it's on manafort and then they are going to try to squeeze

well this week's winter storm in the sierra has many ski resorts has runs opening up for the first time of the season. actually got 14 inches of snow just since thursday and some say these conditions are the best they've seen all season. and even though this latest storm came after president's day which is usually one of the busiest weekends, many resorts believes this new snow will let them stay open until spring. i was worried because there was a lot of dirt. >> that is what i've heard from a lot of people. >> there were big dirt piles. >> enough to get down the mountain, but kind of disconcerting seeing all the -- >> i ski heavenly, there is a run that takes you to the

bottom of the mountain. so rosemary, this is great news, we are still in february, worried we would have to wait until march. >> is this system coming in, there is a system moving in over the next couple days, is it going to bring snow? >> monday it is going to bring rain and snow. yeah, that is some good news, wow. >> that is great. >> very very dry month of february. outside our doors this morning we are dealing with dry conditions, very cold conditions and temperatures are ranging from the upper 20s for some of our inland valley locations to upper 30s in areas along the coast. san francisco checking in right about 41 degrees, and that is one of the warmer spots. santa rosa 27 for you. that's a gorgeous view of the golden gate bridge, can't pass that up. 37 in oakland. 27 in livermore and san jose at this hour 36 degrees outside your door. so a very cold start. as we get into the second part of the day, temperatures will come up, still be a little bit

mountain state. in the south bay, jessie gary, ktvu fox 2 news. we are gearing up for the chinese new year parade later tonight in downtown san francisco, will you be there obviously part of the broadcast. >> yes, excited. last minute preparations, finishing touches being put on the floats. >> so much work goes into those. >> so much work. we of course will broadcast that parade live on air and of course online. >> and this is the biggest parade celebrating the lunar new year that takes place outside of asia. really incredible the crowds you see in san francisco. >> one of the crowd favorites is the golden dragon, nearly 300 feet long. we have christian kafton with some of the spectacular floats we will see tonight. christien. >> reporter: spectacular is the word for it. getting the parade route kind of ready, we've seen a lot of trucks and vehicles in the area, getting ready. but the star of the show

tonight, those floats that you were talking about, they are going to be getting those floats into position later on today and ready for the big parade. it has been a fast and furious few months for stephanie munson and her crew. >> i would say we are working with at least 150 pounds of glitter this season. 10, 15, 20 truck loads of lumber, mylar floral sheeting and spring. styrofoam we have seven truck loads for all the stashes that -- statues. >> reporter: munson has built dozens of floats, she helped dream up 91 of the floats that will make their way down the streets of san francisco. >> we started with our core crew in early december. we really started picking up the crew in january. and sort of been increasing and back to decreasing as we wrap it up. >> the chinese new year parade is one of the few remaining

night parades in north america and will you gar parade outside of asia coming with its own challenges. >> glitter looks entirely different in a spotlight than it does in the dark, than it does in the daylight. we have to make sure everything looks good in every light. that is a unique challenge that we don't experience with any other parade. >> expect to see new additions, more tech companies like sales force are participating. amazon's float comes with alexa and the echo of course standing by. munson says when it is the year of the dog, it can be even easier to please. >> it's been a fun year because everybody loves dogs. this is my 10th chinese new year, all of the zodiac animals i've never seen people so emotionally attached to floats it's because everybody loves dogs. >> reporter: hey, guys, if you take a look here you might be able to see the barricades out on union square, that is assure indication that getting around is going to be tough.

association released a statement strongly opposing the president's idea. it says in part, "bringing more guns into schools is a misguided and dangerously flawed idea. instead we should be arming our schools with more counselors, more books, art and music programs and more school nurses." tomorrow in parkland, florida, marjory stoneman douglas high school will be open for students and parents for a voluntary organization. teachers returned to school yesterday for the first time. teacher said they had mixed emotions going back to that scene where 17 students and faculty member were killed. some say they may never fully recover from the tragedy. >> would you go back? would you be able to go back in there? would you? >> i am going to happy to see my kids, you know, embrace them and help them through all of

this. because they need us as much as we need them. >> classes are scheduled to resume on wednesday in a modified schedule. freshman building where that attack happened will remain off limits and torn down. the massacre traumatized local law enforcement. a sergeant was one of the first responders, his son is a student there, his wife is an assistant athletic director. >> by the grace of god when they walked down the hallway they found each other. and they were able to shelter in place. >> the sergeant's family huddled with two other teachers and 62 students. the sergeant was able to reach his wife on the phone but they were not able to see each other late that night due to the chaos. new information out this morning about the accused shooter in florida and authorities were warned numerous times he could shall be a danger. a woman close to suspect

nikolas cruz called the fbi tip line to report that he was heavily armed and was, "going to explode." this morning we are hearing from cruz himself. he called 911 last year a week after thanksgiving. >> did anyone pull a gun or anything on you? >> i kind of got mad and i started punching walls and a kid came at me and threw me on the ground. >> in that call cruz told 911 911 dispatch patch ares his mother died a couple weeks ago and he was dealing with several ordeals in his life. in the mean tile major league baseball is now honoring the florida shooting victims, all the players, coaches and umpires wore these special caps on friday during the first day of spring training games. the hats had the letters s and d on 9 front representing marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida. the caps are being autographed and auctioned off with the proceeds going to a fund for the victims.

>> i'm claudine wong. let's get a quick look at the weather. rosemary is joining us now. >> why is it so cold? >> a lot of people are asking. the cold air dropping out of canada coming our way. now we can't shake the cold. we'd love to see more rain come our way. it is going to come our way. a weak system on monday and a bigger system midweek. for your weekend we are going to remain mainly dry. high pressure parked over the pacific but notice another storm sort of dropping in right there over the bc, vancouver area, areas over washington, oregon, northern california, scattered showers today. we are going to remain partly cloudy as we get through today and into tomorrow and then things start to change up a little bit as we get into monday. let's focus on today. looking at the afternoon, partly cloudy to partly sunny for today. we do have a few sat ared

temperatures won't change a whole lot. slightly warmer. but some rain coming our way as early as monday. i will detail this coming up. well there is new information on the death of three men in san francisco's ashbury district. test results indicate their deaths were likely due to methamphetamine laced with fentanyl. the medical examiner says drug paraphernalia found at the scene showed presence of speed, cocaine. security guard found the bodies early thursday morning in a doorway to the urban school, a private high school on paid street. police in gilroy are concerned an 18-year-old sexual assault suspect may have numerous victims. gilroy police first got a report of a possible sexual assault involving this man back in march of last year. since that time, two additional victims have come forward with accusations against the gilroy teenager. fell ease ising about -- felice

is being held without jane. a private golf coach in the tri-valley area is behind bars on suspicion of sexual assault of a minor. 51-year-old dublin resident kim was arrested after an investigation revealed evidence of prolonged sex abuse involving a teenage girl who he privately coached. investigators say the abuse began when the girl was 12 years old. officials do believe there could be other victims out there. turning to the north bay where a church ministry that came to the aid of fire victims needs help of its own. back in october we visited first spanish baptist church that serves three meals a day to fire victims. helping with upkeep, the pastor rented the space for 350- dollars a month. he was told first spanish baptist and another minority ministry they needed to pay more. >> we did not agree upon it.

we never had an opportunity to sit down and negotiate what we could afford. we cannot pay $14,265 every month. that is -- we cannot. >> the pastor found an eviction notice, the ministry has until april 19th to leave. his church can pay no more than $750 in rent but hopes to continue serving patrons in the area. the church is looking for a new home. oakland man who went missing in yosemite during a hike is safe this morning after surviving six days in the freezing cold wilderness. alan chow went backpacking but never returned. he got lost in the snow but he did the right thing and he stayed in one place. rangers say he was able to stay hydrated by drinking melted snow. did he have food and warm clothes with him and he stayed

inside his tent. >> the lesson here is for everybody is that you know if you are in the back country and you fall, hurt yourself, you got lost, just stay put, don't try to walk around and get even more lost. >> park rangers say khou's preparedness was key to his survival, he did have minor injuries, he sin good condition. tonight tens of thousands of people will fill the streets of san francisco for the chinese new year parade. it is one of the only night parades in north america and celebration of asian culture outside of asia. it was a huge source of pride for mayor ed lee. i had the privilege of interviewing ed lee in recent years. >> do you see that we look like twins right now? wearing the same thing to this parade, thank you so much for joining us and you have your beautiful wife with you. tell me about how special this parade is for this community. >> gosh, nina and i love to come out here every year. have i been doing it 20 years.

san francisco and certainly one of the event that mayor lee really really seemed to enjoy, now ed lee recognized what can only be surprised is the cultural significance of the chinese parade, chinese new year parade and what it represented for the chinese american community. what thing he always stressed, the city's diversity he viewed the source of the strength. everyone from every culture, whatever their background in the city could come together and celebrate chinese new year. chinese new year celebrations will certainly be bitter sweet without him. >> especially this year in the wake of mayor lee's tragic passing just two months ago is incredibly special. you know, it is tough to underscore how important mayor lee was to the chinese community here in san francisco. to be -- the chinese new year festivities i think this is going to be a period of time to remember mayor lee, to remember

destroyed an abandoned library yesterday. this building on miller avenue had been in the neighborhood for 100 years but abandoned the past 15 years. a history of problems there. squatters took over the building a few years back and that a dispute between old and new squatters may have lead to this fire that was set yesterday afternoon. >> my tent was set on fire. you know, and that was a place i had to go to get away from all the feuding. so now i have nowhere. >> last spring the same building had two fires back to back. the city kept sealing up the property but people would break back in during the overnight hours. one of the squatters told police -- says police knew people were staying in the building but allowed them to continuing about there. last call for a tiki bar in southern santa clara county. a firefighter built the bar in

been shaking recently in the bay area, we thought we would let you know it happened in contra costa county. watching what is called a swarm of earthquakes. that cluster of quakes rumbled through the danville area from early friday morning to about noontime. a magnitude 3.5 quake hit at 12:19 followed by a it 2.8 quake minutes later causing bart to stop and check the drains and the tracks, just standard procedure. scientists says no one knows when the shaking is going to stop. >> no clear start or stop, and there is no clear order to the magnitudes of the earthquake. >> the usgs says there has been six other quake storms since the 1970s. the shortest lasted two days. the longest lasted 92 days. -- 42 days. new concerns about water quality in the north bay related to last october's

wildfires. santa rosa may have contaminated water. the city is water. >> officials are telling the press democrat that they are intensifying water tests throughout the burned out area of santa rosa, including the coffee park neighborhood. replacing the city's water system would cost up to $20 million. a san jose man remains in jail after police say he robbed throw banks in the south bay in less than a week. releasing this surveillance photo of one of the robberies, police say they believe it is 29-year-old oscar ridio. investigators say each time the robber entered the banks, handed the teller a note demanding money. east bay congressman is calling for an independent review of recent close calls at

airports across the country including sfo. saying reviewing near misses will help determine whether there are any patterns related to those incidents. he is calling for a government accountability office study to see if there are ways to prevent close calls. >> it's just looking at best practices when it comes to risk assessment in all professions. and trying to learn from these things to make sure that we are not missing anything. because these near misses can be a tragedy and it's important that the experts look at it. >> there was a previous study on close calls that was done back in 2011. representative says it's time to update that information and follow through with any recommendation that will make air travel safer. well first responders may soon have a faster way to get to sick and injured travelers at sfo. sometimes a bicycle is faster in the terminals. the airport is going to launch

few months for stephanie munson and her crew. >> >> i would say we are working with at least 150 pounds of glitter this season. 10, 15, 20 truck loads of lumber, hundreds of mylar floral sheeting and -- malar floral sheeting and fringe. >> for the last ten years, munson has built dozens of floats for the chinese new year parade and this year she helped dream up 91 of the float that will make their way down the streets of san francisco -- 21 of the floats that will make their way down the streets of san francisco. >> we started picking up the crew in january and increasing and increasing now decreasing as we wrap it up. >> the chinese new year parade is one of the few remaining night parades in north america and the biggest lunar new year parade outside of asia. >> glitter looks entirely

we have one to two fires a day and when you respond together and you put your lives on the line, you do have to surround yourself with experts. and for us the expert in gas and electric is pg&e. we run about 2,500/2,800 fire calls a year and on almost every one of those calls pg&e is responding to that call as well. and so when we show up to a fire and pg&e shows up with us it makes a tremendous team during a moment of crisis. i rely on them, the firefighters in this department rely on them, and so we have to practice safety everyday. utilizing pg&e's talent and expertise in that area trains our firefighters on the gas or electric aspect of a fire and when we have an emergency situation

back to the scene where 17 students and fellow faculty members were killed. the school district brought in counselors and emotional support dogs to help teacher with the grieving process. but some say they may never fully recover from this tragedy. >> would you go back? would you be able to go back in there? would you? i am going to be happy to see my kids. embrace them and help them through all of this. they need us as much as we need them. classes are scheduled to resume on wednesday in a modified schedule. but the freshmen building where the attack happened will remain off limits. and likely is going to be torn down. the massacre has also traumatized a number of local law enforcement officers, a sergeant with the coral springs police department was one of the first responders on the scene that day. his son is a student at the school and his wife is an assistant athletic director.

>> by the grace of good when they walked down the hallway they found each other. and they were able to shelter in place. >> the surgent's family huddled with two other teachers and 62 students. the sergeant was able to reach his wife on phone but not able to see each other until late that night due to the chaotic scene unfolding. new information about the accused shooter and how authorities were warned that he could be a danger. in early january, a woman close to suspect nikolas dues reported that he was heavily arm -- nikolas cruz reported that he was heavily armed. >> did he pull a gun or anything on you? >> i kind of got mad and i started punching walls and stuff. and i a kid threw me on the ground. >> cruz told the 911 dispatcher
