scattered showers. as we get into the second part of your day, temperatures will be cool giving you a look outside your doors where you can see waking up with plenty of gray once again as we get into the second half. we may see partly sunny skies. we are going to remain locked in this sun etithed pattern. temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s around the bay area at this hour. san francisco low 50s as well even though we've lost the reading there. can you see the cloud cover, you can see the gray, the fog out this this morning. into the second of the day we are going to remain with the possibility of maybe a few sprinkles. here is a look at the 24 hour temperature change, we are warmer out there because of the cloud cover, napa up by 13 degrees or so, navado up by 4. stretch it back, you can see the entire state covered in clouds as well as a little bit of moisture there. this moisture plume coming in and bringing southern california a good amount of rain for today. but for us it's just going to

tragic situation in yountville. mourn the loss of three incredible women who care for veterans. >> the victims in the shooting christine loeber the executive director. had 42-year-old dr. jen go, and gonzalez. the attack happened in a building on the veterans home campus. the complex sets amid the vineyards west of highway 29, investigators say a gunman armed with several weapons including a high powered rifle interrupt add going away party for one of the staff members there. gunman has been identified as 36-year-old albert wong. decorated army vet from sacramento who had been treated for combat stress. >> christian kafton as authorities continue to look for a motive in this deadly attack, christien. >> yeah, certainly still an active investigation here in

this morning we are learning more about the three victims and the gunman who entered the veterans administration facility yesterday and set this tragic set of events into motion. the victims three women who worked here at the va program called the pathway home. treating veterans with ptsd. 48-year-old christine loeber, the executive director of pathway home. 42-year-old dr. jen go lick. the pro -- golick. jennifer gonzalez. and we were learning about the gunman. there are reports that 36-year- old albert wong had been discharged from that program just a couple weeks ago, congressman mike thompson was friends with one of the victims and said he wants to remember the victim, their dedication and their sacrifice. >> there were three wonderful,

professional, talented young women who get up every morning and go to work to help veterans. and sadly they are gone. this is just unexplainable. >> reporter: at this point investigators still trying to put together the time line. a deputy called to the scene shortly after this incident first started unfolding, no words were exchanged only gunfire as many as 30 rounds. now after wong reportedly took the hostages there was no further contact until officers reached the room and discovered the dead. the gunman drove here from sacramento in a rental car, that car was located and searched here on the campus. at this point in time though they are still looking for a motive and explanation behind this apparently in explicable act, back to you guise. >> thank you, christien. 7:05, residents that of the veterans home are saddened and

shocked by what transpired. amber lee talked to some of them as they rumped home after a very -- returned home after a very difficult day. >> people who knew the three victims came to the entrance of the yountville veterans home to pay respects. they lit candles, one for each of the women killed. around 6:30 friday night before the official announcement came that the standoff had ended, the sheriff's department mobile command center followed by a caravan of other law enforcement vehicles, including tactical units left the veterans home. an hour later a steady stream of civilian vehicles entered the premise as veterans returned home. one by one, each was stopped by a california highway patrol officer to show identification. >> i'm disturbed very much about that. i didn't know that. i mean, all day this has been going on and we didn't know that they were dead at all. so, that's a shame.

>> it's been a long day. >> one mantles us his wife works as a nurse at the veterans home. >> sad. sad. i don't have any words to say. >> worried about your wife? >> she is fine. she was not in the area. >> i was in my room and somebody was coming down the hall knocking on all the doors saying this is a lockdown. there is a shooter on campus. >> this veteran left the campus as it was being locked down. hoping that no one would be hurt or killed. >> i'm really stunned. it's not a happy day. >> nothing like this ever happened. >> nothing. no. i've never felt any kind of trepidation living here. >> in yountville, amber lee, ktvu fox 2 news. ktvu mark eye ban yes lives near the facility, he was able to take a back road to the

veterans center and took pictures near the baseball diamond and swimming pool on campus. he saw two dozen or more law enforcement officers from where he was standing. >> i was in kind of i thought a secluded spot. only a couple law enforcement vehicles there. i just started casually shooting some video of them. and one of the officers said, get behind something! this guy has an automatic ec weapon. and, you know, so that immediately put me on red alert because it was so quiet here at the veterans center that you really didn't get that feeling that it was, you know, some kind of extreme danger. >> mark says did he not hear any gunfire during the time he was on the scene. and now a bit of background on the veterans home in yountville. it was founded in 1894, according to the cal vet facebook page largest veterans home in the united states of the the facility houses 1000 elderly or disabled veterans.

green popping up here and there. not expecting much of anything over the north bay. north san francisco, but the farther south you go the better opportunity. so portions of the south bay definitely over areas of monterey, if you are thinking about going in that direction for today, be prepared scattered showers are a possibility there. here is a look at your futurecast model. as we get into the afternoon, again, showing you that southern california will pick up the best amount of rainfall out of this. but all this would have to do is shift 30 to 40 miles or so. not only the south bay has a chance of scattered showers but we all do. that is why it's a struggle with each passing model just moving just a little bit farther north, farther south, we do have rain, we don't have rain, we do have rain, we don't. so we are going to leave in that possibility of a few sprinkles for today. sunday a dry day. here is a look at monday. scattered showers a possibility. tuesday looks to be the better day to get some rain much and we have another system that will follow into thursday.

dr. jen golick. jennifer gonzalez. the gunman identified as 36- year-old albert wong. he had been discharged from that program a couple weeks ago. ktvu talks with the man whose wife was in that room and managed to leave after wong walked in. >> just imagine, i mean, you are at a normal workday gathering, a man walks in with a big rifle. and if he is ex military, you know, who knows if he knows how to use it, it was very scary. >> reporter: and investigate i don't remembers still trying to put together a time line on exactly what happened here. deputy called to the scene shortly after 10:30 when the incident first began encountered wong briefly, reportedly no words exchanged in that incident. only gunfire as many as 30 rounds. after wong took those hostages, there was no further contact

until officers breeched the room and discovered the dead. investigators say that the gunman drove here from sacramento in a rental car. the car found and searched here on campus. and of course at this point they are still looking for an explanation or a motive behind this shooting which can only be described as senseless at this time. we are still hoping for an update from investigators later on this morning, we'll work to try to find out a time line on that to see if we can get more information on how the investigation is progressing here. >> christien kafton live up in napa county, thanks. governor jerry brownish crewed a statement that read, ann and i are dopily saddened by the horrible violence which tragically took the lives of three people dedicated to serving our veterans. our hearts go out to their family and loved ones. flags at the tate capital will be flown at half staff.

the nonprofit targeted by the gunman counsels veterans back home. ktvu talked with a man who was in that very same program. >> as officers responded to gunshots at the veterans home in yountville, it became clear the gunman had zeroed in on the nonprofit called the pathway home. >> previous marine or was in the army. he has bullets around his waste. and other stuff in his jacket. he was discharged two weeks ago. >> the program was founded in 2008 over the years ktvu has spoken with the staff and participants. the mission of the pathway home is to provide a home for america's post 9-11 war injuries focused on male veterans scuffing from ptsd, helping veterans rebuild their lives through employment and

education. one resident said he was in class when the shooting happened friday. >> i got a class in 20, and i got the text at 10:30 saying there is an active shooter at the pathway home, don't come here. >> kendall gardner said his heart went out to the staff members including his own psychologist who had seen him through so many tough times. >> honestly, she has been like a saving grace to me. she has done so much for me. she doesn't know this, but, just seeing her weekly she always gives me like hope that, you know, i can get through what i'm dealing with. >> gardner felt for the veterans responsible -- veteran responsible for the shooting. >> being a veteran and coming from service reintegrating into civilian -- civilian life, most don't comprehend. >> jana katsuyama. a group of high school students were rehearsing a play at a theater on the grounds of

the veterans home when the hostage situation unfolded of the 80 students at the high school in napa were rehearsing guys and dolls when they were put on lockdown. the lincoln theater was at a distance from the shooting scene. the student were all evacuated safely. post traumatic stress disorder is a mental illness that affects 80 million people in the u.s. 37% experience symptoms that are considered severe. the national alliance of mental illness says the condition is triggered by a traumatic event such as an accident, assault or military combat. patients experience bad dreams, flashbacks. they have trouble sleeping and outbursts of anger. treatments include psychotherapy and medication. san francisco police are asking for help to find people who rob add car. yesterday afternoon investigators say a car with several people inside boxed in another car on the connector

between southbound 280 and highway 101. >> several parties from that vehicle got out of the suspect's vehicle. brandished a we orange broke out one of the windows on the victim's vehicle. and essentially robbed them at gunpoint. >> the two victims weren't hurt during the robbery and pulled over and called the police. closed for several hours for the investigation. police say they do not have any leads on the suspect but believe the victims may have been targeted. >> they were coming from san francisco, they had gotten on the freeway in san francisco. traveling south and that is we do know talking to the victims it does sound like it may have been a targeted robbery of some kind. investigators are looking at traffic cameras in the area. if have you more information that can help you are asked to call san francisco police or chp. walnut creek police are trying to find the motive of a brutal beating death.

what is being called an unprovoked attack. >> [ inaudible ] reported assault with metal object. >> 34-year-old ma keep major was arrested on suspicion of using a large metal pole to beat a coworker to death thursday night in walnut creek. the construction workers had already left for the day and they believe the victim and the suspect were the only two security guards on duty at that time. >> it's unclear as to if what the issue was in terms of what sort of dispute there was between them. but i they do know each other and unprovoked in the case of the victim. unexpected attack by the suspect. and isolated incident. >> deck tips served a search warrant at major's home to try to piece together what may have

happened. police say they are shaken by that attack. >> frightening that a murder happened so close to where i live. unsettling and it's very unfortunate that it happened in walnut creek. but it is a city. things happen. >> this is walnut creek's first homicide of the year. there was also one killing in the city last year. major is being held on a million dollars bail. well almost immediately after florida governor rick scott signed new gun control measures into law, the national rifle association filed a lawsuit challenging it. the legislation was signed yesterday coming in response from a shooting. raising the minimum rage from 18 to 21. also create the so called guardian program which enables teachers and other school employees to carry handguns. >> i asked for a bill which would ban bump stocks and raise the age to purchase a gun from

extended forecast, more on this coming up. authorities are still at the scene of the veterans home in california, in yountville where a gunman shot and killed three hostages before taking his own life. >> this morning, the president tweeting about the shooting, he wrote we are deeply saddened by the tragic situation in yountville and mourn the loss of three incredible women who cared for veterans. >> the victims of the shooting are 48-year-old christine leber, 42-year-old jennifer golick and 29-year-old jennifer gonzalez. >> it happened west of highway 29 at the vin yard. at the veterans home. investigators say a gunman interpreted a going away pard for one of the staff -- party for one of the staff members. the gunman is identified as 36- year-old albert wong, a decorated army vet from sacramento treat ford combat stress. >> we have more from the veterans home this morning, as authorities continue to look for a motive in this deadly attack. kristen? >> reporter: yes, the

investigation continues at the veterans home of california and the questions persist about what led up to this shooting and what set this tragic set of events into motion. now, first, let's talk about those three victims. the three women who worked here, for the program called the pathway home. it is aimed at treating war veterans with ptsd. they were 48-year-old christine leber, the executive director of the pathway home program, 42- year-old dr. jenner golick the program therapist and 29-year- old jennifer goals a psychologist with the san francisco department of veterans affair. the women were attending a going away party and the gunman walked in and made a bee line for the staff party. it is 36-year-old albert wong who reportedly was discharged from the same program a couple of weeks ago. >> he was in the pathway building. these are the people, you know, that have the ptsd that are in this building. so i mean just common sense would say this this was some individual that is suffering

from ptsd. >> investigators are still trying to put together a time line here. the deputy that was called out to the scene shortly after 10:30 when this incident first began, encountered wong briefly. we hear that no words were exchanged, only gunfire, as many as 30 rounds. after that initial flurry of gunfire, there was no further contact. until officers finally breached that room, at about 6 with 6:00 p.m. and discovered the victims all dead as well as the gunman. investigators say the gunman drove here from sacramento in a rental car. that car located and searched here on the campus. but still, those questions persist. investigators are trying to determine how to make sense out of the senseless. so we will let you know as we hear about further information from the investigators here on the scene. we are hoping that we will learn more about this as the day progresses. back to you. >> we see the yellow tape is. there a lot of activity going on, or are they wrapped up, most of the work, from last

night? >> you know, it is hard to tell just how much work is going on. they are actually starting to shrink the perimeter and we have moved in just a little bit closer than we were last night, but this center of activity, we still are not allowed within i would say 50 or so yards of that building. so it is hard to determine exactly how much work is still under way inside that building. >> all right, live for us, thank you. meanwhile, residents of that veterans home say they are saddened and shocked by what happened yesterday. ktvu amber lee talked to some of them, as they returned home after a very difficult day. >> reporter: people who knew the three victims came to the entrance of the yountville veterans home to pay their respects. they lit candles. one for each of the women killed. around 6:30 friday night, before the official announcement came that the standoff had ended, the napa county sheriff's department mobile incident command center followed by a caravan of other

law enforcement vehicles, including tactical units left the veterans home. an hour later, a steady stream of civilian vehicles entered the premises as veterans returned home. one by one, each was stopped by a california highway patrol officer to show identification. >> i am disturbed very much about that. i didn't know that. all day, this has been going on. and we didn't know that they were dead at all. that is a shame. >> one man tells us his wife worked as a nurse at the veterans home. >> sad, sad. i don't have any words. >> are you worried about your wife? >> she is fine. fortunately. >> i was in my room. and saw he was coming down the hall knocking on the door, saying there is a lockdown, there is a shooter on campus. >> this veteran tells me he

left the campus as it was being locked down hoping no one would be hurt or killed. >> i'm really stunned. it is not a happy day. >> nothing like this has ever happened here? >> no. nothing. i have never felt any kind of trepidation living here. >> in yountville, amber lee, ktvu fox 2 news. well ktvu mark ibanez was in napa and reported footage as it unfold and he lives near the facility and took a back road to the veterans center. that's where he took this video. he was near the baseball diamond and the swimming pool on campus. he says he saw a dozen or two dozen law enforcement officers from where he was standing. >> i was in kind of a secluded spot. there were only a couple of law enforcement vehicles there and i just started casually shooting some video of them. and one of the officers said, get behind something. this guy has an automatic weapon. and you know, so that

immediately put me on red alert, because it was so quiet here at the veterans center, that you really didn't get that feeling that it was, you know, some kind of an extreme danger. >> mark i says he did not hear -- mark says he was did not hear gunfire during the time on the scene. a bit of background on the veterans home in yountville. founded in 1884. according to the cal vet facebook page and the web site, it is the largest veterans home in the united states. it houses about 1,000 elderly or disabled veterans. they receive 24 hour nursing care. all of their meals. and a a comprehensive activity program and other amenities. the shooting raises new concern about the security at the veterans home. one worker whose wife, son and daught her to shelter in place in the basement of the building during the standoff said anyone can walk on to campus. >> there is nothing safe at the veterans home. there is no weapons there. we have no armed security.

new this morning, local firefighters say flying drones near planes and helicopters can be safe if they are in the right hands. the menlo park fire protection district provided these photos of an aerial drone exercise which was held near the dumbarton bridge last night. menlo park and the fremont fire department conducted daytime drone search operations several months ago. the group is now practicing simulated search operations at night. flying drones in close proximity to other aircraft. while there have been close calls between civilian drones and helicopters or planes, menlo park fire chief says different agencies are working together to break new ground to show how drones can be invaluable. >> meantime, menlo park is heading up an emergency disaster drill happening right now in east palo alto, the fifth community drill since august of 2015 and first responders throughout the bay area. the public is invited to help with the training. it does include neighborhood damage assessments, mock

medical triage, radio communications practice and extrication exercises. the event is being held at the saint missionary baptist church on running street in east palo alto. it started at the top of the hour. and it will go until 1:00 this afternoon. more than a quarter century ago, before the me too movement, there was anita hill. tonight, she is the featured speaker at an event. it will be held in oakland. hill gained national attention back in 1991 when she accused then supreme court nominee clarence thomas of sexual harassment while they worked together at two federal agencies. thomas denied the charges. and was later confirmed to the high court. hill is currently a professor at brandeis university in massachusetts and chairs a commission on sexual harassment, and advancing equality in the workplace. her speech tonight, part of the barbara lee lecture series. that event begins at 7:00. it will be held at the oakland marriott center. organizers say people who did not rsvp can still show up at 6:30 and will be allowed in if

there are seats available. the white house says north korea's leader kim jong un must take quote concrete steps to denuclearize the country if he wants a face to face meeting with president trump. the president says a deal with north korea is in the works and if an agreement is reached, everyone will benefit. there is speculation that a face to face meeting could happen as soon as may but the u.s. says kim jong un must make the first move. >> let's be very clear. the united states has made zero concessions. but north korea has made some promises and again, this meeting won't take place without concrete actions that match the promises that have been made by north korea. >> the president tweeted the deal with north korea is very much in the making and will be if completed a very good one for the world. time and place to be determined. and in australia, severe flooding has forced the government to declare a disaster situation. some of the areas in northeastern portion of that country, have received nearly two feet of rain this week.

24 inches. and flood warnings are in effect, throughout the region, rising water levels have also forced some residents to evacuate. more than 200 homes in the australian state of queensland are flooded. a group of school children, and a teacher is all trapped in an adventure park after a nearby road was washed out. trouble down in down under. no kidding. my gosh. two feet of rain. 8:16 op the clock. we will get -- on the clock. we will get maybe, you know, a skoshe, a little bit of the system pulling through. it is really tricky with the models with the back and forth all week long and the final result, we will have to see what happens as we get into your saturday. some models indicating we will get a little bit of rain over the south bay and it doesn't go any farther than san francisco. i am going to say that we all may see just a few sprinkles with it favoring the south bay. how about that? giving you a look over oklahoma, where we are waking up with the gray skies and the fog, as we mentioned, in the

welcome back. fremont police have made four arrests in connection with a sophisticated crime ring. and thieves came from l.a.

and hit blot-enabled credit card skimmers at gas pumps and cloned atm cards. authorities say the skimmers placed all over the bay area, but they believe the town of crocket in contra costa county was especially hard hit. investigators say an alert patrol officer at a wells fargo bank led them to the first suspect. >> one of the things that the person was doing that was unusual was going to different atms and conducting multiple transactions. >> police arrested 29-year-old yuri osetski and his brother. investigators found debit card and money and credit card skimmers in their hotel room and police later arrested two more men and recovered more than 125 cloned debit cards. police are still searching for at least three more suspects. investigators believe the plen who have ties it -- the men who have ties to a criminal organization based out of l.a. county. the controversial high

speed rail project in contra costa county is surging to $77 billion. some lawmakers are calling it a financial train wreck. the latest budget plan was released on friday by the high speed rail authority's new chief executive. the project is also very, very behind schedule and we're talking about four years. authorities say the costs have soared and the end game is to connect san francisco with los angeles. work has already begun on a section that connects san francisco to the central valley but that phase is not slated to be finished until 2029. the governor supports the project saying high speed rail is california's future. >> i make no bones about it. i like trains. i like high speed trains even better. so do the voters in 2008. when they approved the bond. look, 11 other countries have high speed trains. they are now taken for granted all over europe. and japan. and in china. >> high speed rail authorities

say $77 billion is a baseline. the project would actually cost less, or it would cost more, as much as $98 billion. a state auditor is right now investigating the project and a report will be out later this year. and it does not appear that the san jose mayor will face much opposition as he seeks re- election. the deadline to file was yesterday. and according to the mercury news, so far, only one other candidate has qualified to be on the ballot. and that is a doctor named huanb min sam. cindy chavez announced she will not run in the race. and two other candidates may still end up on the ballot. the elections department is still counting signatures. we could have a final list of candidates by monday. how about some baseball? the a's opened up the pocketbooks and added an all- star to the team. and espn says they have struck a deal with this guy, jonathan mccroy, a one year deal pending a physical. 31 years old. two-time all-star with. his days in milwaukee.

right now, santa rosa, the airport, reporting a half mile visibility, and down along highway 101, you will find it there, maybe between the novato and petaluma area. a little bit of morning fog. enjoying that morning drive, if you have one. and clouds expected to remain over the entire north bay for today. central bay, as well. and then the farther south you go, the better the chance that you are going to get some rain. can't rule out the possibility that any one. us could get scattered showers. but it is really going to favor the south bay. a look at the future cast model on this. notice that's where it is at. as we stop around noontime. morgan hill, santa cruz mountains, and san jose, you're included in there. and then as we get into the second part of saturday, and into the evening hours, it begins to move out and we clear out. and tomorrow is going to be a dry one. as far as the future cast shows you, not a big deal. but it could get you wet. a few one hundredths of an inch a possibility. especially over the south bay. all of us will get in on the rain next week. but for today, mostly cloudy and mainly dry for the north

and central bay. 67 santa rosa. for the south bay, expect at least the possibility of a little bit of rain, a few scattered showers and 65 for san jose in the afternoon. a look at sunday and the extended forecast coming up in just a bit. the community of yountville in napa county is trying to make sense of friday's attack at a facility that treats military veterans with ptsd. >> now this morning, president trump was tweeting about the shooting. he wrote, we are deeply saddened by the tragic situation in yountville and mourn the loss of three incredible women who cared for veterans. >> and here are those victims, 48-year-old christine loeber, 42-year-old dr. jennifer golick, and 29-year-old psychologist jennifer gonzalez. >> we have more at the veterans home in california in yountville, with more information on the three victims and the suspected shooter. >> reporter: still so many questions about this intent. if you take a look, this is still the center, the focus of this morning's investigation. still trying to get to the bottom of exactly what set this

tragic set of events into motion in the first place. first, let's talk about the three victims. one more time. who worked here. for the program called the pathway home. and that's a program aimed at treating war veterans who returned with ptsd. now, those victims were 48-year- old christine leber, the executive director of the pathway home program, 42-year- old dr. jen golick, the program therapist and 29-year-old dr. jennifer gonzalez, a psychologist, with the stran department of veterans affairs. now the women were all attending a going away party for a co-worker when the gunman simply walked in and made a bee line toward that staff party. that gunman now identified as 36-year-old albert wong. he had reportedly been discharged from that program. just a couple of weeks ago. congressman mike thompson was friends with one of the victims. he was here yesterday. and he says he wants to remember the victims. their dedication. and their sacrifice. >> there were three wonderful professional talented young

women who get up every morning and go to work, to help veterans. and sadly, they are gone. this is just unexplainable. >> reporter: that is the sentiment we have heard repeated. now we are also starting to learn more about the time line here, and deputy call told the scene shortly after 10:30 when this incident began and encountered wong briefly. in that brief encounter, apparently no words were exchanged, only gunfire, we are hearing as many as 30 rounds were fired in all. after the initial flurry of gunfire, no contact until the officers reached the room until 6:00 p.m. and discovered the dead. investigators say the gunman drove here from sacramento, in a rental car. that car was found and searched here on the campus. there are still so many questions about this case including the motivation behind all of this. and how all of this happened. and that investigation is still under way. we are still trying to determine exactly what investigators are doing inside

the building. but just to give you a sense of just how large the scope of this investigation is, if you take a look, you can see there is a white vehicle here in the parking lot, close to us here, and if you look very carefully, you can see that there is evidence markers there on the door, and we have been careful not to go anywhere near that vehicle, and the deputies have said that they are not going near that vehicle, until they can get it all cleared. but that just gives you a sense of the scope of this investigation. still trying to determine exactly how many moving parts there were here, and certainly everybody here paying tribute to those three women who were dedicated, in their service to others, and who lost their lives in this terrible incident. back to you. >> certainly think about them and their families and loved ones today. >> all right, thanks for the update. governor jerry brown issued a statement following the shooting in yountville, you can see it on the screen, it red ann and i are deeply saddened by the horrible violence at the yountville veterans home which tragically took the lives of three people dedicated to serving our veterans. our heart goes out to their families and loved ones and the

entire community of yountville. he says flags at the state capitol will be flown at half staff in recognition of the victims and their families. the nonprofit targeted by the gunman counsels veterans back home after serving in iraq and afghanistan. janet took a closer look at the pathway home and talked with a man who was in that program. >> reporter: as officers responded to gunshots at the veterans home in yountville, it became clear the gunman had zeroed in on the nonprofit called the pathway home. >> it is a previous marine, or was in the army. he had bullets around his waist. and others stuck in his jacket. he was discharged two weeks ago. >> reporter: the program was founded in 2008. and over the years, ktvu has spoke within staff and participants, the mission of the pathway home, is to provide a home for america's post-9/11 wounded warriors. focusing on male veterans

struggling with ptsd. a team of social workers and psychologists helping veterans rebuild their lives through employment, and education. one resident said he was in class when the shooting happened friday. >> i got out of class, at 10:20, and i got the text at 10:30 saying that there is an active shooter at the pathway home. don't come here. >> veteran kendall gardner said his heart immediately went out to the staff members held hostage. including his own psychologist, who had seen him through so many tough times. >> honestly, she has been like a saving grace to me. she has done so much for me. she probably doesn't even know this, but just seeing her weekly, you know, it gives me like hope that, you know, i can get through what i am dealing with. >> gardner also said he felt for the veteran responsible for the shooting. >> being a veteran and coming from military service, trying to reintegrate into civilian life, it is a different experience that most really

don't complimented. >> ktvu, fox 2 news. >> also, a group of high school students were rehearsing a play at the theater on the grounds of that veterans home, when the hostage situation all unfolded. 80 students at the high school in napa were rehearsing the show guys and dolls and authorities say the lincoln theater was distant from that shooting scene. although the students by the way were evacuated safely. post traumatic stress disorder is a mental illness that affects an estimated 8 million people here in the u.s. 37% of those experience symptoms that are considered severe. national alliance of mental illness says the condition is triggered by traumatic event, like an accident, an assault, or a military combat. and patients experience bad dreams, flashbacks, trouble sleeps and at times outbursts of ang area and treatments include psychotherapy and medication. san francisco list are asking for help to fine the people who robbed the people at

gun point in a car at a major interchange. and yesterday afternoon, a car with several people inside boxed in another car on the connector between interstate 280 and highway 101. >> several parties from that vehicle got out of the suspect's vehicle, brandished a weapon, and broke out one of the windows on the victim's vehicle. and essentially robbed them at gunpoint. >> the two victims weren't hurt during the robbery. and they pulled over and called police. the southbound 101 connector was closed for several hours during the investigation. police say they do not have any leads on the suspect. but they think the victims may have been targeted. >> they were coming from san francisco. they had gotten on to the freeway. in san francisco. traveling south. and that's when they were -- we do know that from talking to the victims, it does sound like it might have been a targeted robbery of some kind. >> investigators are looking at traffic cameras in the area. and they are asking any witnesses to come forward. if you have information, are you asked to call san francisco police or the chp.

and walnut creek creek police are trying to find the motive into a brutal beating death of a security guard. the co-worker is now facing murder charges in what is called an unprovoked attack. >> 1800 cassy avenue. a reported assault. with metal object. >> 34-year-old hottien major was arrested on suspicion of a using a large metal pole to beat a former 60-year-old former co-worker, or worker, at an apartment complex under construction. the construction workers police say had already left for the day and they believe the victim and the suspect were the only two security guards on duty at the time. >> it is unclear what the issue was in terms of what sort of dispute there was between them. but they do know each other. and it appears to be unprovoked. in the case of the victim. and unexpected attack by the suspect.

and an isolated incident. >> detectives have served a search warrant to try to piece together what may have happened. people who live near that construction site say they are shaken by the attack. >> frightening that a murder happened so close to where i live. it is just unsettling. and it is very unfortunate that it happened in walnut creek. but it is a city. things happen. >> this is walnut creek's first homicide of the year. there was also one killing in the city last year. major is being held now on a million dollars bail. almost immediately after florida governor rick scott signed new gun control measures into the law, the national rifle association filed a lawsuit challenging it. the legislation was filed yesterday. it comes in the shooting at stoneman douglas high school which killed 17 people. the law raises the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21 and ex tends the waiting

period to three days and it creates a so-called guardian program that will enable teachers and other school employees to carry handguns. >> i asked for a bill which would ban bump stocks and raise the age to purchase a gun from 18 to 21. and this bill does that. however, there are things in this bill that i open, and i have been pretty open about that. -- that i oppose, and i have been pretty open about that. i till think law enforcement officers are the ones to protect our schools. >> the nra legal challenge focuses on the part of the law that does raise the minimum age to age 21 and believes it violates the constitutional rights of 18 to 21-year-olds. we will have more on the military home shooting in the next hour in napa count. >> we have more from mark ibanez, who lives near the treatment facility and he describes his interaction with police at the scene.

areas right around monterey, and even santa cruz, and it looks like some rain getting ready to move ashore. and that's where the moisture is expected to remain. central and southern california for today. and some high elevation snow expected over the sierra. but not much. and here in the bay area, we are going to be mostly cloudy and mainly dry. and the south bay, it will get the opportunity, with some rain. and it will be light but it will be there. and for the rest of us, we may squeeze out a few scattered showers. i have to put that in there. just because this system has just been fluctuating back and forth. and it would only have to come 30, 40 miles north and now we are all dealing with rain. right? giving you a view at the future cast though, stopping it for you tonight, and you can see all of that blue and the green, over southern california, and central california, and all the way into monterey, and maybe the south bay, for today. and sunday, it is going to be a dry day. we all enjoy some dry mild weather. and then as we get into monday, a little bit of unsettled weather coming our way. scattered showers in the forecast. and better bet on tuesday, with rain and sierra snow.

several days. today, a slight chance over the south bay, we will have an even better chance. in fact, areas over the south bay, likely to see some rain for today. here is a look there at the east bay and mount diablo and another look from san francisco, across the bay and you can see, most if not the entire bay area, covered in gray skies. anywhere from the mid and high level clouds, to low-lying clouds. and that fog out there as well. and visibility is an issue. over portions of the bay area. we will check in on that, in just a moment. and first, your numbers. san francisco right now 51. santa rosa, 50. more low 50s in san jose. and good morning at 56. and here is a look at where we are seeing a little bit of fog. you can see a light shade of gray along the coastline and a little darker as you get into areas closer to half moon bay. over the north bay, fluctuating down to a quarter of a mile at the airport. and that darker shade of gray does indicate patchy dense fog along highway 101 in the petaluma and novato area. we have an early morning drive expected out there. don't let it catch you

offguard. for today, clouds for the entire bay area. and that chance for rain, especially to the north, or i should say south, we typically say to the north, but the south, and it is a system that will bring central and southern california the rain for today. here is a look at the future cast. you can see how it just kind of skirts just the southern portion of the bay area. and san jose, morgan hill, gilroy, santa cruz, monterey, those are the areas that is definitely favored. but we can't rule out that any one of us could pick up a sprinkle or two. as we get into the second part of the day, it moves out. so a bit of unsettled weather we are calling for. and the models have really struggled with how far north it is going to come. right now, it looks like it will be in particular, right around the south bay, where we see that scattered showers activity for today. a look at the afternoon highs for today. low 60s in san francisco. and mid-60s in fremont. and upper 60s expected for santa rosa. and tomorrow, a dry day. and then we get into some better chance, a better chance for some rain moving into the week ahead, and a look at the

extended forecast coming up. >> sounds good. thank you, rosemary. we have been in contact this morning with the u.s. army about the gunman in the yountville military home shooting. >> the army tells us that albert wong was in the infantry from may of 2010 to august of 2013. and spent a year deployed in afghanistan. >> he was a decorated soldier, medals including the army commendation and army good conduct and afghanistan campaign medal and a badge for expert marksmanship with a rifle. >> at this hour, authorities remain at the scene of that veterans home of california in yountville where they say wrong shot and killed three hostages before he took his own life. >> and right there, you can see, this morning, president trump mentioning something about the shooter, on twitter, he wrote, we are deeply saddened by the tragic situation in yountville. and we mourn the loss of three incredible women who cared for veterans. >> the three victims in the shoot having been identified as 48-year-old christine leber,

and 42-year-old jen golick, and 29-year-old jennifer gonzalez. that attack happened at a building on a veterans home complex. the complex sits amid vineyards west of highway 29. investigators say a gunman armed with several weapons including a high-powered rifle, interrupted a going away part for one. staff members there. the gunman has been identified as 36-year-old albert wong. as we mentioned, a very decorated army vet from sacramento. who had been treated there, for combat stress. let's go right now to ktvu christian captain at the veterans home this morning and it looks like it is still a very active scene as they try to figure out a motive. >> reporter: yes, you can still see that there is a perimeter here around the madison building here, at the veterans home of california. i had a chance to walk around the other side of the building. it is hard to see if there is any activity still ongoing inside that building. as investigators still try to determine what set this entire tragic set of events into motion in the first place.

>> and the investigation is still under way. we are starting to put together a time line here that started around 10:20. at around 10:30, a deputy was called to the scene. and then encountered wong briefly and apparently no words were exchanged in that incident. just gunfire. as many as 30 rounds we are hearing after that initial flurry of gunfire, no further contact. and wong reportedly retreated to that room. there was no further contact until officers reached that room, and discovered the dead. now, investigators say the gunman drove here from sacramento, in a rental vehicle. that car was found and searched here on campus, towed away earlier this morning. but there is still a lot of questions. there is still a lot of questions outstanding about what led up to this shooting. what could have been done possibly to prevent it. and what course the investigation is going to take today. and as we showed you, the last half hour, there is still a lot of questions, like just the white car here, with the

evidence markers, on the door, and still no word on exactly whose vehicle that, is or why there are evidence markers or when it is going to be removed here, from the scene. we have been prudent in simply not approaching that vehicle, and leaving it be, as you might expect. but that is just one of the many questions that still remains to be answered here in yountville. clearly a tragic story. a deep loss to the community. these three women who really gave of themselves to try to help others. >> very, very sad situation. we will continue to learn, i'm sure more, throughout the morning and the day. thank you so much. >> thank you. 9:06 your time. residents of that veterans home say they are saddened and shocked by what happened. ktvu amber lee talked to some of them, as they returned home, after a very difficult day. >> reporter: people who knew the three victims came to the entrance of the yountville veterans home to pay their respects. they lit candles. one for each of the women

killed. around 6:30 friday night, before the official announcement came, that the standoff had ended, the napa county sheriff's office mobile incident command center followed by a caravan of other law enforcement vehicles, including tactical units, left the veterans home. and an hour later, a steady stream of civilian vehicles entered the premises as veterans returned home. one by one, each was stopped by a california highway patrol officer to show identification. >> disturbed very much about that. i didn't know that. i mean all day, this has been going on. and we didn't know that they were dead at all. so that is a shame. >> it has been a long day. >> one man tells us his wife works as a nurse at the veterans home. >> sad, sad. i don't have any words to say. >> worried about your wife? >> she is fine. fortunately she wasn't in that area.

>> i was in my room and i somebody was coming down the hall knocking on the doors saying there is a lockdown, there is a shooter on campus. >> this veteran tells me he left the campus as it was being locked down hoping that no one would be hurt or killed. >> i am really stunned. it is not a happy day. >> nothing like this has ever happened in the time you've been here? >> nothing. no. i have never felt any kind of trepidation living here. >> in yountville, amber lee, ktvu, fox 2 news. ktvu mark ibanez lived in napa and he recorded footage of the standoff as it was unfolding. he lives near the facility. and so he was able to take a back road to the veteran center and that's where he took the video you're looking at. it is near a baseball diamond and a swimming pool located on that campus. mark says he saw two dozen or mo law enforcement officers from where he was standing. >> i was in kind of i thought a secluded spot. there were only a couple of law enforcement vehicles there. and i just started casually

shooting some video of them. and one of the officers said get behind something, this guy has an automatic weapon. and you know, so that immediately put me on red alert, because it was so quiet here, at the veterans center, that you really didn't get that feeling that it was, you know, some kind of extreme danger. >> mark says he did not hear any gunfire during the time he was on the scene. and a bit of background on that veterans home in yountville. it was founded in 1884. and according to the facebook page, and the web site, it is the largest veterans home here in the united states. the facility houses about a thousand elderly or disabled veterans. they receive 24 hour nursing care. meals. comprehensive activity programs. and some other amenities. now, the shooting raises new concerns about security at the veterans home. one worker whose wife and daughter had to shelter in place in the basement of the building during the standoff told us that anyone can walk on

can expect for today and the rest of your bay area weekend, coming up. all right, thanks, rosemary. 9:14 on the clock. new this morning, local firefighters say flying drones near planes and helicopters can be safe in the right hands. the menlo park fire protection district provided thee photos of an aerial drone protection exercise near the dumbarton bridge. they had a daytime operation several months ago. and the group is now practicing simulated search operations at night flying drones in close proximity to other aircraft. while there have been close calls between civilian drones and helicopters or plane, menlo park fire chief says different agencies are now working together to break new ground and show drones in the right hands can be invaluable. meantime menlo park is also heading up an emergency disaster bill happening right now in east palo alto. this is the district's fifth community drill since august of 2015. and they will be more throughout the bay area. the public is invited to be a

part of the mock medical triage and radio communications practice and extrication exercises. the event is at faith missionary baptist church in east palo alto. it began a short time ago. and it will go until 1:00 this afternoon. well, more than a quarter century before the me too movement, there was anita hill. tonight, she is a featured speaker at an event in oakland. gaining national attention back in 1991 when she accused then supreme court nominee clarence thomas of sexual harassment. while they worked together at two federal agencies. thomas denied the charges. and was confirmed to the high bench. hill is currently a professor at brandeis university in massachusetts. and chairs a commission on sexual harassment and advancing equality in the workplace. hill's speech tonight is part of the barbara lee lecture series at 7:00 tonight at the oakland marriott center. organizers say people who did not rsvp can show up at 6:30

and will be allowed in if they still have available seats. the white house says north korea's leader kim jong un must take concrete steps to denuclearize his country if he wants to have a face to face meeting with president trump. the president says a deal with north korea is in the works and if an agreement is reached, everyone will benefit. there is speculation that a face to face meeting could happen as soon as may. but the u.s. says kim jong un must make the first move. >> let's be very clear. the united states has made zero concessions. but north korea has made some promises, and again, these -- this meeting won't take place without concrete actions that match the promises that have been made by north korea. >> now, here was the president's tweet. he said the deal with north korea is very much in the making and will be if completed a very good one for the world. time and place to be determined. and in australia, severe flooding has forced the government to declare a disaster situation there. some of the areas in that

quo. and outside our doors, joined by gray skies, fog, and a few scattered showers for today. a bit of what we call an unsettled pattern. this makes it a little tricky to explain. but here we go. a look at storm tracker two. where we can see green over the screen over the north bay, with a lot of fog, visibility an issue along highway 101. most of this verga. and verga just means even it is falling from those clouds, it evaporates before it hits the ground. if you are getting anything, please let me know. and central and south bay, dry at the moment. but you can see, right here, at santa cruz, a few sprinkles right off the coastline. and this system is going to favor the south bay. for the north bay, central bay, maybe a few sprinkles today. and the south bay, you have a better chance at getting some rain and as i back up, i will show you why. because that moisture plume is right about in here. and so central and southern california is definitely going to get some rain today. the high sierra will get a little bit of snow.

rain expected down to about lake level. even lower than that. have you don't have to worry about the snow if you're -- you don't have to worry about the snow if you're traveling up there, because it will be very, very high. for the bay area, mostly cloudy. mainly dry. a few scattered showers a possibility for our south bay locations, with the chance even better. here is a look at the future cast model. for saturday into saturday night, central and southern california seeing the rain and it could creep all the way up to monterey and maybe even san jose. so that is where we will see some of that rain forked today. sunday is a dry day. here is monday. scattered showers in the forecast. and tuesday, wednesday, thursday, even into friday, it looks like we will have more opportunities for that rain to come our way. and more sierra snow. so when we stop it here, by tonight, you can see just a little bit of rain a possibility. and then san jose, .04 of an inch. maybe more than that over monterey and maybe 0.10. and then all the way through the week and next weekend, and

9:22. fremont police made four arrests with a very sophisticated crime rings where thieves came out of l.a. and stole information from gas pumps in the bay area, with gas card skimmers at gas pumps and cloned atm cards and the skimmers were replaced around the bay area but police think the town of crocket in contra costa county was especially hard hit. investigators say an alert patrol officer at a wells fargo bank led them to their first suspect. >> one of the things that this person was doing was unusual was going to different atms and conducting multiple transactions. >> a 29-year-old was arrested and his brother. investigators say they found debit cards, money, and credit card skimmers in the hotel room. and police later arrested two more men and recovered more than a 125 claimed debit cards. police are still searching for

at least three more suspects. and investigators believe the men all have ties with a criminal organization based out of l.a. county. well, the cost of california's controversial high speed rail project is serving $77 billion. some lawmakers call it a financial train wreck. and the latest budget plan was released on friday by the high speed rail new chief executive and it is behind schedule by four years and the price has soared and the progress has slowed and the end game is conducting san francisco and los angeles. the phrase that connects san francisco and the central valley is expected to be finished sooner. and the governor is supporting the project saying high speed rail is california's future. >> i make no bones about it. i like trains. i like high speed trains even better. so did the voters in 2008. when they approved the bond. look, 11 other countries have

high speed trains next are now taken for granted. all over europe. and in japan and in china. >> by the way, that $77 billion is $13 billion more than the estimates were two years ago. and it is just a baseline. they are saying the project could cost less, or it could cost as much as $98 billion. the state auditor is currently investigating the project and that report is due out later this year. and it does not appear that san jose mayor is going to face much opposition as he seeks re- election. the deadline to file was yesterday. and according to the mercury news, so far one other candidate so far has qualified to be on the ballot. and that is a doctor named quang li fam. >> and cindy shaves announced she would not run in the june race. there are two other candidates that may still end up on the ballot. the elections department is still counting their signatures. there is a final list of candidates that could come as early as monday. well, the a's opened up the pocketbook and added an all- star to their team.

now, you can see it cleared up pretty good. and visibility is two miles. and it continues to fluctuate. at least for the next hour or so. we will keep an eye out on that for you. the temperatures, slowly rising. we started out with a few throrts out there. and now most of us in the -- 40s out there. and now most of us in the low to mid-60s. and so a lot of cloud cover for today. and the farther south you go. the better chance we have some of the rain coming our way. areas like san jose and into santa cruz, months ray. this system is expected to rain pretty much over central and southern california for your saturday. and the future cast picks up on it fairly well. here is a look at what is going on, by about noontime, 1:00 in the afternoon, you can see all of the way to morgan hill, and santa cruz, and santa cruz mountains, and the diablo range, and you know, san jose also included in there, although we can't see it at the moment. and all of us could maybe get a sprinkle, but as we get into the afternoon, it will continue to move out. and then we will be dry for the second part of your day. and each a little bit of clearing there, you can see, for the evening hours.

and afternoon highs, for today, upper 50s to upper 60s. and 59 pacifica. and 64 in oakland. and 66 expected for concord. and we will be dry and mild tomorrow but then the extended forecast looks fairly wet. i will have more on that coming up in a little bit. >> thank you. now to the continuing coverage of the napa county veterans home shooting. just a short time ago, we talked with the army about the suspect gunman albert wong. >> the army tells us that wong served in the infantry from may of 2010 until august of 2013. he was deployed for a year in afghanistan. >> wong was a decorated soldier as well. medals included the army commendation, the army good conduct medal, afghanistan campaign medical and a badge for expert marksman ship with a rifle. president trump also tweeting this morning, about the victims of the attack, and we can show you, there are the victims, christine loeber and ann golick and jennifer gonzalez. he talked about them, in his tweet, saying we are deeply

saddened by these tragic situations in yountville, and mourn the loss of these three incredible women who cared for the veterans. >> and you see the faces and the names of the victims, mental health workers, christine loeber, jen golick and jennifer gonzalez. >> and we have a report now about the hostage situation, and how it was all unfolding there. all right, we hope to have that for you in just a bit. in the meantime, at 9:33, we are going to talk about the nonprofit that was targeted by the gunman. again, it counsels veterans who are back home after serving in iraq and afghanistan. let's go now to our report. >> reporter: as officers responded to gunshots at the veterans home in yountville, it became clear the gunman had zeroed in on the nonprofit called the pathway home. >> it is a previous marine, or was in the army.

he had bullets around his waist. and other stuff in his jacket. unknown what. he was discharged two weeks ago. >> reporter: the program was founded in 2008. and over the years, ktvu has spoken with the staff and participants. the mission of the pathway home is to provide a home for america's post-9/11 wounded warriors, focusing on male veterans struggling with perform tsd. a team of social workers and psychologists helping veterans rebuild their lives through employment and education. one resident said he was in class when the shooting happened friday. >> i got out of class, at 10:20, and i got the text at 10:30, saying there is an active shooter at the pathway home. don't come here. >> veteran kendahl gardner said his heart immediately wept out to the staff members held hostage including his own psychologist who had seen him through so many tough times. >> honestly, she has been like a saving grace to me.

she has done so much for me. she probably doesn't even know this, but just seeing her weekly, she always gives me like hope that, you know, i can get through what i am dealing with. >> gardner also said he felt for the veteran responsible for the shooting. >> being a veteran, and coming from service and trying to reintegrate into civilian life, it is a different experience that most really don't comprehend. >> ktvu foxed 2 news. governor jerry brown issued a statement with the shooting in yountville that ready, ann and i are deeply saddened by the horrible violence at the yountville veterans home which tragically took the lives of three people dedicated to serving our veterans. our heart goes out to their families and loved ones and the entire community of yountville. and says flags will be flown at half staff in recognition of the families and the victims. a group of high school students were rehearsing a play at the theater on the growns of

the home when the -- grounds of the home when the violence unfolded. they were rehearsing guys and dolls and put on lockdown. authorities say the lincoln theater was a fair distance from that shooting scene. the stands by the way were all -- the students by the way were all evacuated safely. post traumatic stress disorder affects nearly 8 million people in the u.s. and 37% experience symptoms that are considered severe. mental illness experts say the condition can be triggered by a traumatic event such as an accident, assault, or military combat and patients experience flashbacks and trouble sleeping and outbursts of anger at times. and treatments include psychotherapy and medication. we want to go back to the scene, at the veterans home of california, in yountville. where it has been an active scene all morning. and what is going on now at this point? >> reporter: yes, i'm sorry, i was just speaking a moment ago,

there is a woman here, we finally found out what happened with that white car. there was a woman who was here yesterday, and i was just asking if she was here, and then i was told to turn around, to make sure that i could address you, law dean, but she was here -- claudine, but she was here and clearly upset about everything that transpired yesterday. meanwhile, we were trying to set up a live interview with the california secretary of the california department of veterans affairs. he also is here on the scene and hoping to have a live interview but instead, he has opted to actually tour the area of where this tragedy unfolded yesterday, as the investigation continues. trying to figure out exactly what set this tragic set of events into motion here. now, first let's talk about the victims. the three women who worked here, for a program called the pathway home. and that is a program that is aimed at treating those with ptsd who returned from war. and they were 48-year-old christine loeber, the executive director of the pathway home, and 42-year-old doctor jen go

lick and 29-year-old jennifer gonzalez a psychologist with the san francisco department of veterans affairs. these women were attending a going away party when the gunman simply walked in and made a bee line toward the staff party. the gunman identified as 36- year-old albert wong. he had reportedly been discharged from that program just a couple of weeks ago. congressman mike thompson was friends with one of those victims and says he wants to remember the victims, their dedication, and their sacrifice. >> there were three wonderful professional talented young women who get up every morning and go to work to help veterans, and sadly, they are gone. this is just unexplainable. >> and meanwhile, we are learning more about the time line here, that the deputy showed up to the scene around 10:30 this morning. when the incident began. and encountered wong briefly. reportedly there were no words exchanged, only gunfire, as many as 30 rounds, after that

initial flurry of gunfire, there was no further contact until officers reached that room and discovered everyone dead. if you can come on back to the live picture, you can see some people are escorted here into the madison building, where this unfortunate incident unfolded. we are anticipating that we will get an update on the course of the investigation, and how things are developing, out here, and again, we are hoping to get more information as soon as we can. >> look like we lost him out there. but we will continue to update you as information comes in, and becomes available. all right, 9:39 on the clock. new this morning, there is a police standoff we want to tell you about. it continues at this hour in southern california. police say the suspect has already killed one officer and wounded another. this all started around 9:00 last night. police say they got a call about a wreckless driver. officers say they spotted the vehicle, and that's when a short pursuit began. the driver crashed his car though and ran into an

apartment complex, and barricaded himself in one of the units. and police say the suspect shot the officers, through the door, when they approached. one officer who did survive the shooting underwent emergency surgery and is in stable condition. he is expected to be okay. again, one officer was killed, and as we mentioned, the suspect is still barricaded in that unit at this time. and walnut creek police are trying to find the motive in a brutal beating death of a security guard, as co-worker now is facing murder charges, in what is being called an unprovoked attack. >> 1800 cassy avenue. reported assault with a metal on. >> 34-year-old hakim major was arrested on suspicion of using that large metal pole to beat his 60-year-old co-worker to death. at an apartment complex construction site thursday night in walnut creek. police say the construction workers had already left for the day. and they believe the victim and the suspect were the only two security guards on duty at the

time. >> it is unclear as to what the issue was in terms of what sort of dispute there was between them. but they do know each other. and it appears to be unprovoked, in the case of the victim, and an unexpected attack by the suspect, and an isolated incident. >> detectives have served a search warrant at the home in concord to try to piece together what may have happened. people who live near that construction site say they are shaken by the attack. >> frightening that a murder happened so close to where i live. it is just unsettling. and it is very unfortunate that it happened in walnut creek. but it is a city. things happen. >> this is walnut creek's first homicide of the year. there was also one killing in the city last year. the suspect is now being held on a million dollars bail. almost immediately after the florida governor rick scott

signed new gun control measures into law, the national rifle association filed a lawsuit challenging it. the legislation was signed yesterday. and it comes in response to the shooting at stoneman douglas high school which killed 17 people. the law raises the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21. and extends the waiting period to three days. the law also creates a so- called guardian program which allows teachers and other school employees to carry handguns. >> i asked for a bill that would ban bump stocks and raise the age of purchasing a gun from 18 to 21. and this bill does that. however, there are things in this bill that i oppose. and i have been pretty open about that. i still think law enforcement officers should be the ones to protect our schools. >> the nra legal challenge focuses on the part of the law that raises the minimum age to buy a firearm to 21. the nra believes the law violates the constitutional rights of 18 to 21-year-olds.

good morning, we are looking at saturday, a chance of a few scattered showers, especially the farther south you are. i will have a look at today and the rest of the weekend and the extended forecast coming up. a female coast guard petty officer from the bay area is breaking barriers. petty officer first class christina duffy designated the rank of surfman during a ceremony at the coast guard station golden gate in sausalito yesterday morning. she is just the fourth active female surfman ever in the coast guard. surfman is the highest rank in the coast guard's small boat operation. they are able to operate rescue boats in very dangerous sea and weather conditions. she is also a mother of two, she says the promotion has been her goal for more than a decade. >> it is probably the best day

of my career. to know how much time and dedication, not just from me and everybody that has helped me in this journey. >> duffy's commanding officer, the first woman to earn the decision in 2002. a two-tour veteran dog is getting a special commendation this year. >> this year, the sergeant spends a lot of his time resting. arthritis setting into the nearly 13-year-old body. but this two-tour marine corps veteran will be taking one more big trip to washington, d.c., the recipient of the american humane louis pope award. >> the louis pope american humane award is for a dog that retired from the military that served honorably, judiciously and basically are heroes. >> the sergeant served alongside eddie's son kevin.

we are back at 9:55. a bill is being introduced in san francisco aimed at providing more protection for domestic workers, babysitters, and caretakers. several groups supporting workers announcing a statewide campaign, seeking greater compliance with immigrant worker protections, which included the introduction of a bill sponsored by an assembleman to create a domestic work enforcement program, and allow for more resources, education, and

training for california's domestic workers and domestic employers to promote fair wages, and dignified labor standards in their industry. well, a first of its kind campus dormitory is being built for the students at the life learning academy in san francisco. a ground breaking ceremony held yesterday. this is on treasure island. the public charter school has 20 students who supporters say have not been successful in other school settings. and many have suffered abuse. some have had trouble with the law. others are homeless. with the late mayor ed lee, he was a big supporter of the dormitory project and yesterday, his widow anita there in the far left took part in a ground-breaking along with other current and former lawmakers. the dormitory by the way expected to be completed in about a year. 200 kids go to the school. and 20 will live in the dormitory. and let's talk about dorms. imagine one that is able to track and follow you, even without human interaction. and the r-1 is supposed to do
