back end of your weekend. then the temperatures will be back up. i'll show you that in the extended forecast coming up. we have breaking news. contra costa county firefighters are investigating an early morning fire. leigh martinez is there now. >> reporter: a family of four that included two young children, they were home and asleep in the upstairs unit. but fortunately, they all made it out okay. unfortunately, they will not be able to go back home tonight because of the damage to their home here. the firefighters were called out at 5:28 a.m. to a commercial structure fire. a multi-unit apartment building had the fire spreading quickly. it started from an ac unit from the back room and quickly consumed the room. the adults reported to smoke

and fire. the fire crew has arrived. and surrounding the units had to be evacuated. they did have the fire knocked down in 20 minutes. back out here live, we can see that the fire crews are wrapping up. they are in the mopup mode right now. the damage is so severe to the upper unit, that the family will not be able to go back tonight. the red cross will help them with the temporary shelter. senate judiciary chairman chuck grassily agreed late friday night to allow the woman that is accusing judge brett kavanaugh of sexual assault more time when to testify before the congress. senate republicans said yesterday was the deadline for dr. ford to decide. but chairman chuck grassily gave her and extension. he wants to hear professor christine blasey ford's testimony. he said with all the extensions

that we gave dr. ford to testify, i feel like i'm playing a second trombone in a judiciary orchestra and assumer is senator schumer is the director. >> reporter: they are deciding when and how to conduct hearing into sexual assault allegations. the chair agreed to her requested for security but denied allowing witnesses. big sticking points remain. she was want to test thursday and republicans said wednesday. the republicans want a female attorney to question ford. republicans say that ford should go first. >> first that is bringing the claim is usually the one that goes first. >> reporter: attorney barbara bryant said that each side has

valid points. she said that sexual assault victims often might have difficulty repping the details, -- remembering the details to dig into the truth without witnesses and other evidence. >> i think it is important -- if someone cannot remember a certain fact to jump to the conclusion that they are making it all up then. >> reporter: president trump said i have no doubt that the attack was as bad as she said, charges would have been immediately filed with the local law enforcement authorities. >> crime sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes in our country. so the president's statement was wrong. and i very much wish that he had no comment at all. >> reporter: the assistant director of berkley said that the republicans are pushing for a vote soon to get it done before the mid-term elections. >> they want to get this over

several protests are planned outside the wells fargo bay area. they say they helped to fund immigration center and projects like the excel pipeline. they are going to try to convince foam close their accounts. there are demonstrations planned in several areas. in contra costa county, two high school football players were hospitalized overnight with what 1 being described as traumatic injuries. the players hurt their heads during a game last night at heritage high of the brentwood. and the other player suffered a back injury at freedom high school in oakley. the chief tells the east bay times that both players rushed to the medical center in walnut creek. neither of their names or conditions are being released at this time. and the chief ted is very rare to have -- said it is very rare to have two high school

players injured on the same night. the law that could have helped bully students was vetoed. it would allow the students to be transferred to other districts t was to help advantaged students like foster children that have experienced homelessness. a woman was attacked while jogging in a park and now her attacker was charged with attempted ape it happened on monday. -- rape. it happened on monday. he grabbed her from behind and pulled her into the pushes and pulled down here pants.  >> she did fight back and screaming she was going to kill him and was able to call the police in eventually made the arrest. >> it was risky. but i don't second it guess at all. the man did not have a weapon. if he would have had a knife or

richmond. oakland 72. upper 80s in danville. and that will be one of the warmer spots. 80 in san jose. a mild 72 in saint that crews with partly cloudy -- santa cruz, 72. half moon bay, mostly cloudy for the entire day. this is the extended as we get into lake tahoe. very ville in the over -- chilly in the overnight hours. and then gusty conditions today and tomorrow. here at home, we're looking at a nice forecast. the temperatures cooler for the back end of the weekend. low to mid- 60s expect add along the coastline and we'll go low 70s along the bay and low to mid- 80s for the inland communities. but it doesn't really last by monday.

before the prior fire department getting there. the family will not be able to return we're told that the red cross will be helping out. this is a mopup right now. in mart teen necessities, -- in martinez, i'm mart apartment. gunman dressed guard uniforms started hooting some a military where the place commanders were siting after the attack. the prime minister said that iran holds regional terror fons

and that is what caused the fire. now, as he said, there was a family of four i was sleeping at there. it included two young children. fortunately, they all meted out. they are not going to be able to return home today because of the fire damage. firefighters were first called out at 5:20 8 am to a commercial structure fire on sentinel drive. a multiunit apartment building had a fire that was spreading quickly. it started from an ac unit and quickly consumed that room. the two adults inside the unit reported the fire. the fire alarm woke them all up. >> they were the original reporting party. they woke up to smoke and flames inside the apartment unit. they were able to evacuate immediately. >> reporter: the surrounding units were also evacuated when fire crews arrived. fire crews had the fire knocked down within 20 minutes. it only made it to alarm fire. as of right now, they are still a mop up kind of mode. we've only seen one firefighter

it is very rare that two players would suffer serious immediate -- injuries on the very same night -- night. a woman was attacked while jogging on menlo park. she fought back and her attacker is being charged with attempted rape. row helio -- he attacked a woman on monday. police say he grabbed the woman from behind, pulled her into the bushes, and pulled her pants down. investigators say the victim did fight back. he tried to run away. she was then able to call the police, who eventually made the arrest. >> it was risky, but don't second-guess it at all for this reason. the man did not have a weapon. he didn't -- if he had a knife or gun, that would have been a step not to take. >> arteaga is being held in the san mateo county gel on $150,000

bail. the death toll from hurricane florence stands at 44 this morning. one of the latest victims was an elderly man. his body was found in a submerged pickup truck. 3000 people along the lynches river have been ordered to evacuate. south carolina's governor says preliminary estimates put the damage at $1.2 billion. destruction in north carolina is a far worse. the governor says damage there is in the billions. floodwaters are breaching a dam in wilmington, north carolina. that dam was holding back water from a power plant. as it is -- as a result of the breach, there is toxic coal ash flowing into the cape fear river. it is possible that ash was escaping from the facility. they are currently moving large stones into place to try to lug holes and weeks. the area where that dam is located at more than 30 inches

was loud enough to wake them all up. >> they were the original reporting party. saying that they woke up to smoke and flames inside their apartment unit. and they were able to evacuate immediately. >> reporter: surrounding units were also evacuated. fire crews had the fire knockdown within many minutes. -- knocked down within 20 minutes. they are in the mop up stage right now. that family of four will not be able to get back into their apartment because of the fire damage. in martinez, leigh martinez, ktvu fox 2 news. a man and his dog are recovering from injuries sustained in the latest freeway shooting in the bay area. that happened around 10:30 last night on interstate 90 80 -- 980 in oakland. both the man and his dog were injured by glass that went flying as a result of the gunfire. the chp described the injuries as minor to moderate. there have been more than 100 highway shootings in the bay

area since 2015. time now is 8:35. the san francisco medical examiner is identifying a motorcyclist that was killed in a crash on the bay bridge. terry luverne of san francisco killed in a crash yesterday morning on the was by direction near treasure island. officers safe they are still trying to determine exactly what happened. it appears the motorcyclist hit a number of cars before coming to a stop. two right lanes were closed for several hours, causing some very long traffic delays on the bridge. we've also learned the identity of a woman who was killed in a hit-and-run in san jose on thursday night. santa clara county medical examiner says 77-year-old houma was walking across vista park drive when someone hit her with the car and then drove off. police say that driver left in a dark blue minivan or perhaps an suv. if you got information, san jose police would like to hear from you. governor brown signed a bill that steps of liability costs with wildfires.

ebay is increasing its security at its san jose headquarters. the company filed plans with the city to install security fencing around its hamilton avenue complex. the steel fencing will be at least 70 feet high. an ebay spokesperson declined to say if the added security
