drive. when you get to the toll plaza traffic very light. go back to the desk. >> thank you. we are continuing to follow a deadly shooting in bay point, a convenience store clerk shot and killed by an armed robber. elissa harrington spoke with the store's owner and has some video of the very scary encounter. good morning . >> reporter: good morning. you can see the store is back open but i did get a chance to speak with the owner. he provided ktvu with security video taken from inside the store. i do want to warn you, it is very graphic. it shows two men enter kam's market. one goes behind the counter, takes cash out of the register and then pistol whips the clerk. a second suspect goes to the back of the store and holds a manager there in the back. i spoke with the owner of kam's. he told me the deputies are still searching for that second suspect. >> they came around the corner

and, unfortunately, he was counting the money and they were able to grab the money and then there was a little fight going on between both of them and mark, the guy, his gun went off and mark panicked and pulled out our gun and he actually shot the guy. >> reporter: the injured suspect then ran out of the store and down lynbrook street where he collapsed. paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. i'm told the clerk who was pistol whipped had to get stitches but is expected to be okay. i actually just went inside the store and another thing that the owner told me is that the suspect's gun went off first. it went off and then hit the ceiling so they had to remove one of the ceiling panels and that is when the clerk got his gun and opened fire. reporting live from bay point, elissa harrington, ktvu fox 2 news. happening today, the alameda county board of supervisor set to vote on selling the county share of the oakland coliseum complex to the oakland as. the sale would include the

stadium and the arena. the former malibu grand prix property next to the complex and the oakland raiders training facility in alameda. supervisor made -- the county's stake in the complex is $85 million. they say the sale is likely to relieve the county's debt that's weighed on taxpayers since the raiders returned to oakland. schaaff released a statement saying a sale represents progress for east oakland and as fans and all of us working to keep the team rooted in oakland. house speaker nancy pelosi hasn't yet sent the two articles of impeachment to the senate saying she wants assurances that there will be a fair trial in the senate. sonoma state political science professor david mccune offers another opinion as to why pelosi is holding back. >> what speaker pelosi is trying to do is gain leverage here at least with mitch mcconnell and the proceedings as they move forward. the problem with that is that we are looking at iowa voting in less than 50 days and democrats are worried about how

impeachment could affect those early primaries. >> mccune also says president trump and the g.o.p. are expected to use the impeachment as a way of rallying republicans and independent voters. newly released documents show 90 minutes after president trump's july 25th phone call with the president of ukraine the white house ordered a freeze on aid to ukraine. the documents were obtained by the senate for public integrity. tells the pentagon to keep quiet about the aid because of the sensitive nature of the request. the president's decision to halt aid was never announced and no normal notification was ever sent to congress. a court in saudi arabia has sentenced five people to death for the killing of "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi. jamal khashoggi was killed in the saudi consulate in istanbul last year by a team of saudi agents. the kingdom's crown prince drew international condemnation for the killing because several saudi agents involved had worked with him directly. two people are in custody

this morning after a shooting in chicago left 13 people injured. it happened in the city's south side sunday morning. the party was held in memory of a person killed earlier this year in chicago. police believe the shooting stemmed from some sort of argument, dispute. shootings were fired initially inside the home. however, police say there were bullets seen flying into the streets targeting people who were running for safety. police have not identified the suspects. they have in custody. a 17th person now died from injuries after a volcano erupted on white island about two weeks ago. that victim died saturday night at the hospital. new zealand's prime minister has launched an investigation into why tour guides were still working on the island when there were warnings about an uptick in volcanic activity. two more people are still missing and presumed dead. officials of sacramento's international airport say that so far today all flights

scheduled to arrive and depart on time. this after a rough day yesterday with more than half of the flights delayed yesterday. this had nothing to do with weather. it was an internet outage at the airport. a car hit a utility pole and that meant every passenger, every piece of luggage had to be checked in manually. >> this is the worst experience ever in my entire life and i've been flying a lot. >> kind of like this is my first holiday without my family. i'm 20, a college student, so i kind of hurt. >> almost every airline at the airport was affected. arriving flights were not impacted. everything should be okay and on schedule this morning. we just checked with the three major bay area airports. we found no serious delays or cancellations this morning. but as you should know by now, always check with your airline before you head to the airport and people are being told instead of leaving one hour ahead of time for domestic flights, make it two. >> our dads would be so proud of us. >> there we go. i imagine the airports are

busy. how about the roadways? check in. >> roadways are looking okay. busier in some spots, not in others. i checked b.a.r.t. and also muni and no delays on those systems right now. go to the maps. we are still following that problem earlier in san ramon, croak canyon road at bollinger road, a multicar crash shut down a couple of lanes. 20 to 30 minutes before everything can open up entirely. also a crash northbound 238 at westbound 580. a big rig and another vehicle and you can see traffic getting pretty slow at that interchange there. here's highway 24 in lafayette, traffic getting lighter compared to what we saw about an hour ago. on the left of the screen you can see that fog dancing around. looks pretty magical there. here is 880 in oakland, north and southbound traffic looks good and once you get to the toll plaza, you will see no problems at all. looks like this camera is a little out of focus but you can see from the pretty sparse headlights there's no backup here. nice. there we go.

we are now a couple of days away from christmas and stores are sending their hours to make sure everyone gets their gifts on time for the big holiday. over the weekend people descended upon union square in san francisco trying to snag last minute deals. the national retail federation expects holiday retail sales in the u.s. to increase about 4% from last year. but for some people in union square, it wasn't just about the shopping. it's taking in the city's holiday vibe and honing in on what christmas is all about. if you haven't finished all your holiday shopping, some stores including macy's are open christmas eve. >> make a point of avoiding the malls and supporting local artists instead. we saw a big crowd yesterday at

the crane way craft fair in richmond. more than 200 exhibits were showcased. one of the producers says this event provides an alternative to shopping online or at chain stores and it helps small business owners. this was the 49th year of the craft fair. 49ers will travel up to seattle on sunday for a game that will have huge implications for how the playoff situation will all shake out. if the niners beat the seahawks sunday they will win the afc west, grab the number 1 playoff seated but get a first round bye and they can use it. if the 49ers lose they fall down to the number 5 seed and will likely play on the road at philly in wild card round number 1. niners still dealing with a number of injury concerns but the las vegas odds makers still have them as a slight favorite over seattle. sunday's game will kick off about 5:20. nashville police say they are still gathering information on saturday's stabbing that

left two young men dead and a third person hospitalized. one of the victims, 22-year-old clayton beathard. he is the younger brothers of the 49ers backup quarterback c.j. beathard. the coach later told the team that he talked with beathard as he was leaving sunday's game with the rams. >> stopped me and says, make sure the guys win this game. i didn't want to say that at the beginning because this game doesn't mean anything compared to his brother. we know that. but you guys also know c.j. and he's got our backs as much as any of us and we got his, man. special day for us, guys, and i'm so thankful for you guys that you could do that for him because that was the last thing he said to me and i know that still meant a lot to him. >> clayton beathard's 21-year- old friend paul tra paeony also passed away. nashville police now released a

morning where we start to see things pick up in the south bay and that is not the case. so hopefully a light drive for folks out there. san mateo bridge traffic looks pretty light and here is san jose, 280, an hour ago this picture was fine but now it's all fogged in. i think that's the perfect segue to send it over to rosemary orozco because there's pretty dense, heavy fog in spots as you can see there. >> yes, it's all over the place. san jose reporting a mile, the north bay reporting quarter mile in some spots. take a look at some of the rainfall from the weekend because we continue to see the next storm moving and bringing us more rain, but for the past weekend we saw anywhere from quarter inch to 1/2" in our urban areas. livermore not so well. 14-100 reported for you there. ben lemmon lemmon, 2 inches.

a winter weather advisory for folks traveling up, be prepared for that. we are looking at that lasting until 10:00 tonight. for us it's going to be a partly cloudy, dry, cool day. there's tomorrow morning, waking up partly cloudy and dry. over the course of the afternoon, though, our clouds will increase and by tomorrow night, christmas eve evening, we have got scattered showers in the forecast. it's going to linger into wednesday morning. so for the folks that have to be on the roadways on wednesday, on and off, it is not going to be a complete washout with steady rain but as the system scoots the coastline we are going to get the wraparound moisture. so on and off scattered showers in the forecast for your wednesday. as far as rainfall amounts anywhere from quarter inch to an inch expected. this could change a little bit as we get closer and we will continue to fine-tune that for you. meanwhile our temperatures this morning very cold. 31 in napa, 33 santa rosa.

7:24. new this morning, boeing's ceo is resigning amid ongoing problems with the company's troubled 737 max jets. dennis muleberg is stepping down immediately. boeing's current board chairman will officially take over january 13th. the board says a change in leadership was necessary to restore confidence in the company as it works to repair relationships with regulators and shareholders. you will remember the 737 max jet was grounded worldwide in march after the second of two crashes that killed a combined total of 346 people. there's a lot more mail during the holidays certainly and thieves count on some of that mail to contain cash or checks. police are warning about what's being called mailbox fishing, when thieves manage to get a mousetrap or some sticky substance on the end of the string, drop that into a

mailbox and draw it back up with whatever envelopes that stick to it. the easiest targets are those big outdoor mailboxes and those where no one is watching. police say that people can avoid being victims by avoiding mail drops during certain times of the days in the week. >> try not to mail something outdoors after the box's last collection time for the day. every box has a posted collection time. so you certainly don't want your mail sitting in the box overnight or overnight on a saturday into a sunday when it's not going to be collected for more than 48 hours. >> investigators say the thieves certainly focus on the holidays but they are active around the year, especially around the first and the 15th of the month. that is frequently when people receive their government checks as well as mortgage or rent payments. to the north bay, the petaluma police department is asking for the public's help in identifying two people. this man and woman stole a wallet that someone left on the counter at a petaluma market. police say the suspects charged

more than $1700 on the victim's credit card at stores, supermarkets, a movie theater and a cigarette shop. warning people that another credit card skimming device found at a local gas station. it was discovered at a gas and shop station on sir frances drake boulevard near spalding drive earlier this month. skimmers are used to capture customers' credit and debit card numbers as well as personal i.d. numbers. state officials say they have found 286 credit card skimmers so far this year but they warn many more were likely planted and not discovered before identity thieves removed them. some people waiting for their gifts to arrive may be disappointed after a fedex delivery truck went up in flames in orange county. the driver picked up the packages and was heading out towards san diego. fullerton firefighters sprayed water on the truck and picked through the packages and tried to save what they could. no word yet on how this fire started. here in the bay area, may be hard to believe but a house on the market in one of silicon

valley's most soughtafter neighborhoods and going for $274,000. this is part of the city of los gatos' affordable housing program. this is a house, the two bedroom, 1100 square foot townhouse is worth $1.4 million. now, there are some income qualifications. you have to make less than $132,000 a year for a family of four. the home will always remain in the affordable housing program. that means whoever buys it likely won't be able to make millions when they sell it because it will be sold at a lowered price. the list is out for the coldest real estate markets in the united states. four bay area cities made that list. coming up, find out where the cities rank and what this might mean for the bay area real estate market. also with tensions between the united states and north korea grow, the u.s. military is monitoring the area for a possible surprise missile test. details on what a new satellite image shows when we come back.

inconvenient but you're going to places where you're excited to see people. so it's all worth it. >> airline officials recommend getting to the airport at least two hours ahead of your flight. the tsa suggests if you're traveling with gifts, don't wrap them yet because if they need to be inspected agents will have to open them up. if you're revving up the car and heading up to lake tahoe, expect to be putting chains on the tires: right now chain controls on highway 50, 80 and 89 except for four-wheel- drive vehicles. the chp says even those drivers should probably carry chains in case the next storm dumps more snow than the snow plows and scrapers can remove. experienced drivers had other advice for people who are on their way through the mountains for the holidays. >> i do a lot of driving up and down through the mountains, but i didn't think i would be coming up here when it would be this bad. make sure you have fuel, extra blankets, flashlights and all the safety stuff you need. >> take your time and just enjoy it. it's beautiful. it's peaceful. >> california highway patrol

also suggests drivers check the weather forecast before they leave home so they know what to expect once they are on the road. 7:33. happening today, thousands of toys will be handed out to families in need in the south bay and just in time for christmas. >> sara zendehnam joins us live. she is in san jose where the annual sacred heart toy giveaway is underway. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this event is officially underway and if you know me, you know that i am living the dream right now because they are blasting christmas music. it is a festive feeling in here right now. what's cool about this event is they don't just have toys for kids. of course they have all of these action figures and barbie dolls and everything but they also have an entire section right over here for teenagers. this seems to be kind of a popular section that people are crowding around. so really toys for -- and gifts for kids of all ages. now, families that are in here right now were lining up early this morning to get inside at 7:00 this morning and start picking all these holiday

gifts. this is for sacred heart community service's annual toy box day. it's an event they have put on for the last 55 years and they have helped countless families have a very merry christmas. the organization will give out more than 18,000 toys to 6000 kids in need. this event is for families that pre registered with sacred heart. some are helped by the organization all year. families are paired with a volunteer and they get to walk through these rooms and pick two toys, one big and a stopping stuffer for each child. this event wouldn't be possible without the volunteers. they started showing up at 4:00 this morning to get ready for the big day. we talked to one of them about how special this day is. >> it's just about giving back and it's a feeling you get from doing that that's just fulfilling and amazing organization, what they do and how they do it. >> reporter: sacred heart brings the communities together to address poverty in silicon

current and four former white house officials to testify in the trial. members say pelosi is overstepping her bounds. >> it's the senate's job to dispose of impeachment articles once passed by the house. >> they might exonerate president trump or they might further incriminate him. but the truth should come out on something as important as an impeachment. >> lawmakers from both parties said over the weekend they believe a trial is still likely to happen at some point in january in the senate. however, it does remain unclear how long that trial would last. u.s. military leaders are monitoring north korea for a possible surprise missile test. north korea has warned of a possible christmas gift to the united states saying the trump administration is running out of time on nuclear negotiations. a new satellite image of a factory where north korea makes military equipment is -- >> disappointed if something

about half mile. livermore some improvement there but if you notice that dark shade of gray there along 24, 680, over towards highway 4, we are in and out of some pretty thick fog. in the north bay it's been fluctuating as well and novato reporting that visibility way low, less than quarter mile. so please be careful. if you're onto the highways early this morning. the other headline, how much colder we are. down by 19 degrees in napa, by 14 in oakland and by 11 over livermore and step out of the way and show you some of the numbers. in the north bay it's a freezing start over areas of napa, 32 for you there. 33 in santa rosa. inner east bay, 37 livermore, upper 30s to mid-40s around the bay. we will be dry for today. the sierra continues with snow, though. are you traveling to tahoe? be prepared with slick roads and hazardous conditions. the winter weather advisory for tahoe goes until tonight. doesn't expire until 10:00. afternoon highs under dry conditions for us here at home, widespread 50s. mid to upper 50s for the north bay as well as the south bay.

the space domain, more missions for our space satellites up there and so we have got to protect them, you have got to design new satellites that can hide or jam attackers or maneuver out of the way of a threat. >> the secretary of defense is expected to lay out a time line in the next few weeks for how the space force will be implemented. american airlines is now offering nonbinary gender options for passengers when they book a flight. people can now designate u or x for their gender and calling the airline and booking a flight that way. united was the first airline to roll out this option in march. southwest and alaska are also looking to offer a nongender specific classification while booking flights as well. today's opening bell starting the trading day on wall street, shares were mostly lower today ahead of the christmas holidays for many markets. the dow futures headed for a third straight gain. stocks look poised for a fresh record to start a holiday

abbreviated week. trading has been underway for about an hour and a half. we see the dow jones is up by more than 100 points. not quite at the one half of 1% mark but might be heading there. s&p showing a more modest bump. the same story on the nasdaq. hottest housing and coldest housing markets in the country and finds four bay area cities are near the bottom of that list. san francisco is one of the coldest in the country, ranks 97th. the reality hop report says that sales are down by an average of 5.6% from their asking prices. oakland is 95th with sale prices near 5% lower than the list price. fremont is 88, down almost 4%. san jose is 84, 3.7% off the list price. gilbert, arizona average sales price is down more than 1 1/2%. the u.s. postal service is facing a discrimination lawsuit over its christmas stamps. the suit was filed by a private

extreme heat and severe drought in the country. fire officials are not expecting any significant rainfall until sometime in late january. as of yesterday, there were more than 105 fires burning in new south wales, the country's most populous state and home to sydney. meanwhile fire crews in australia were able to come to the aid of a koala in need. firefighters were responding to the fire in cuddly creek, a small town in south australia when they stumbled upon this little guy. a firefighter shared the water bottle with the koala for a much needed drink and at one point the koala tried to grab the bottle and take care of himself. santa delivered some early christmas presents to deserving kids in oakland. >> yeah, baby. >> they were ready. the oak love foundation collected 3000 toys to hand out to kids and yesterday they threw a community block party in west oakland.

>> it's a good thing, especially for families with low incomes or like my a single mother who is struggling also. yeah. >> i think it's great. so nice that they want to do this. they don't have to, you know, so i think it's really wonderful. >> the oak love foundation has helped santa deliver gifts to families in oakland for the past 11 years. in the hills of east bay you can find a christmas tradition now in its 70th year. it was created by an immigrant from india who wanted to bring the joy to his family and the community. ktvu's greg liggins joined the community as they turned on the lights ahead of christmas day. >> reporter: nestled in the hills of el cerrito on mosier lane you will find the handy work of sundar shaddy. the made the hundreds of pieces in this display meant to indict the biblical town of bethlehem but he wasn't christian. >> his wife was a christian and he wanted to do this for her and for the community.

he was warm, he was humble. it's a very kind thing that he did for our whole community. >> reporter: it all started up the hill with this blue star he made and displayed on land next to his home on arlington boulevard in 1949. but over the years the display grew and grew as did the crowds who came to see it. >> i think it's amazing, the fact that, you know, he made all of these and he didn't have to, but he just wanted to spread joy and that's what this time of year is all about. >> reporter: now the viewers span generations, sarah hanes hasn't seen the display in 20 years since her daughter was a child. but it pulled her back today. >> you know, there's so much going on in this world and i just need to get grounded back in the faith so i came for a sense of the community, the peace. >> reporter: soft music in the

background, a chill in the air, the calming presence of the figures. one woman says she comes because it slows her down at least for a moment. >> we did the quick, quick, shoot, shoot, and whether it's the tempo or the temperature, i think everyone really wants to just bring it down a notch. >> reporter: the display is considered folk art. over the years many pieces have been restored but they are all original and took countless hours to create. many bring friends and family to share in something rare and special. >> it's beautiful. this was the fourth generation of us that's been coming out here when i was a little boy. when i was 5 years old my mother and father brought me up here. >> reporter: since the early 2000s, pg&e provided the small piece of land for the display. firefighters put it up and the club and a community group take care of it. about five years ago the creator made his first appearance in the display, as depicted here.

10 to 15 minutes this week. but b.a.r.t. is still on its regular schedule. the only day it's going to be different is on wednesday, christmas holiday. bay bridge toll plaza looks good. a report of a crash past the toll plaza but not causing any problems or backups here. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you. new this morning, a clerk shot and killed an armed robber at a convenience store in bay point. it happened at kam's market on the port chicago highway. elissa harrington spoke with the owner and has video from that incident and joins us live in front of the store with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. kam's market. at one point the clerk and the suspect was on the ground wrestling when the suspect's gun went off. it hit the ceiling. they had to remove that ceiling panel. the clerk then fired back, fatally wounding the gunman. the whole thing was captured on surveillance video. i want to show you, you can see 11:00 last night.

one heads to the back of the store where that person holds a manager at gunpoint. then the other heads straight to the cash register. the clerk was counting money. the armed suspect pistol whipped the clerk and knocked him to the ground. the clerk then pulled out a gun and after the suspect's gun went off first, the clerk opened fire too shooting that suspect. the suspect is heard on video calling to his partner saying that the clerk does have a gun, and then they both run out but the suspect only made it about halfway down the block before collapsing. paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. the second suspect still outstanding. the owner of kam's market told me the clerk involved had worked here about five years and he is an air force veteran. >> took him hospital. he got stitches on the head and is checking out and when i told him that he actually killed the guy, he was very sad. >> reporter: i talked to one of the regular customers here and he told me he had seen that

clerk chase shoplifters out of the store so he's not surprised that he fought back. the contra costa county sheriff's office is investigating the incident. live in bay point, elissa harrington, ktvu fox 2 news. happening today, the alameda county board of supervisor set to vote on selling the county sheriff the oakland complex to the oakland as. the sale includes the stadium and the arena, the former malibu grand prix property next to the complex and the oakland raiders training facility in alameda. the county's stake in the complex is $85 million. they say the sale is likely to relieve the county's debt that's weighed on taxpayers ever since the raiders returned to oakland. oakland mayor released a statement saying, quote, a sale represents progress for east oakland and as fans and all of us working to keep the team rooted in oakland. an impeachment trial in the senate could happen next month but house speaker nancy pelosi has not yet sent the two articles of impeachment to the senate saying she wants assurances that there will be a

fair trial there. sonoma state political science professor david mcewen offers another opinion as to why pelosi is holding back. >> what speaker pelosi is trying to do is gain leverage here at least with mitch mcconnell and the proceedings as they move forward. the problem with that is that we are looking at iowa voting in less than 50 days and democrats are worried about how impeachment could affect those early primaries. >> mcewen also says president trump and the g.o.p. are expected to use the impeachment as a way of rallying the republican and independent voters. newly released documents show that 90 minutes after president trump's july 25th phone call with the president of ukraine the white house ordered a freeze on aid to ukraine. the documents were obtained by the senate for publicity integrity. in one e-mail a senior official at the office of management and budget tells the pentagon to keep quiet about the aid freeze because of the quote, sensitive nature of the request. the documents appear to show that the president's decision to halt aid was never announced and no normal notification was ever sent to congress.

new this morning a court in saudi arabia sentenced five people to death for the killing of "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi. khashoggi was killed in the saudi consulate in istanbul last year by a team of saudi agents. the kingdom's crown prince drew international condemnation for the killing because several saudi agents involved had worked directly for him. two people in custody this morning after a shooting in chicago left 13 people injured. that shooting happened at a house party in the city's south side early sunday morning. party was held in memory of a person killed earlier this year in chicago. police believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute. shots were fired initially inside the home. however, police say bullets were seen flying into the streets targeting people that were running for safety. police have not identified the suspects that they now have in custody. new zealand officials say a 17th person has now died from injuries after volcanic eruption on white island about two weeks ago. according to reuters, the victim died saturday night at

the hospital. new zealand's prime minister has launched an investigation into why tour guides were still working on the island when there were warnings about an uptick in volcanic activity. two more people are still missing and presumed dead. officials in sacramento international airport say that so far today all flights are scheduled to arrive and depart on time. this comes after a rough day yesterday with more than half the flights delayed. it actually had nothing to do with the weather. instead there was an internet outage at the airport after a car hit a utility pole. that meant every passenger and every piece of luggage had to be checked in manually. >> this is the worst experience ever in my entire life and i have been flying a lot. >> it was kind of like a -- this is my first holiday without my family. i'm 20, a college student so it kind of hurt. >> almost every airline at the airport was affected but arriving flights were not impacted. again, everything is reported to be back on schedule this morning. we did check all the three major bay area airports.

no serious delays and cancellations this morning but certainly as most frequent travelers will tell you, it's a good idea to check with your airline before you get in the car to go to the airport and at this time of year you know to plan even more time ahead of when you think you're supposed to be there. >> the airports can get crazy especially around the holidays. the roads maybe not so much because a lot of folks are probably already where they want to be. >> no major problems on the roads, at least not in the monday morning commute. definitely lighter than we would expect to see on a monday morning. but there are still some issues to talk about and that's why we are going to check the maps now, including this crash in fairfield. this is westbound 80 at air base parkway, a single vehicle collision. the car on its roof. we expect lighter than usual traffic so not as many heading that direction but something to be aware of. also a report of a crash just past the toll plaza but looking at our toll plaza picture, things overall look pretty good. your drive on the westbound 80 corridor through the eastshore freeway, it will take you just 19 minutes to get from the

carquinez bridge to this point here on the screen and then once you get to the toll plaza, look how light that is, it's like a saturday commute usually. send it over to rosemary. >> thank you very much. good morning to you. it is a colder start to the day. it's a foggy start to the day in some areas. looking at that shot that allie had of the san mateo bridge, right there at the ground level where most folks are driving, it is improving. we still have quite a bit over the hills, though, and you can almost see that in that picture. here's a look at the visibility map where if you take a look at san francisco, oakland, even into concord, napa at this point, visibility looking good. novato still very thick along highway, you will find patchy, dense fog. into san jose, mild reported there. plenty of gray to go around. at the higher elevations we are seeing the fog. although sacramento still with a dense fog advisory. so the takeaway here is you are going to find some outhere,

dennis muilenburg is stepping down immediately. boeing's current board chairman will officially take over january 13th. the board says a change in leadership was necessary to restore confidence in the company as it works to repair relationships with regulators and stakeholders. the 737 max jet was grounded worldwide in march after the second of two crashes that killed a total of 346 people. we are just a couple of days away from christmas and some stores are extending their hours to make sure everyone gets their gifts on time. over the weekend people descending upon union square in san francisco trying to snag last minute deals. national retail federation expects holiday retail sales in the u.s. to increase 4% from last year, but for some people in union square it really wasn't just about the shopping. it's taking in the city's holiday vibe and honing in on what christmas is really all about. if you haven't finished all your shopping, some stores including macy's will be open on christmas eve. many people in the bay area

make a point of avoiding the mall and they support local artists instead. we saw a lot of people yesterday at the crafts fair in richmond. more than 200 exhibits were showcased here. one of the producers says the event provides an alternative to shopping online or at chain stores and helps small business owners. this is the frightening year for the craft fair. it benefits ktsa radio. 49ers head up to seattle on sunday for a game that will have huge implications for how the playoff situation will shake out for both teams. if the niners beat the seahawks they will win the nfc west, grab the number 1 playoff seed in the nfc. but more importantly get a first round buy. if they lose, they will fall to the number 5 seed and will likely play on the road in the wild card round, likely in philadelphia. niners have a number of injury concerns but las vegas odds maker still them have as a slight favorite over seattle. sunday's game will kick off in

the northwest at 5:20 p.m. nashville police still gathering information in saturday's stabbing that left two young men dead, a third person hospitalized. one of the victims is clayton beathard, brother to c.j. beathard. when he heard the news, he went to be with his family in nashville. shanahan later told the team that he talked with beathard as he was leaving after saturday's rams game. >> he barely could talk. he said make sure the guys are going to win this game. and i didn't want to say that at the beginning because this game doesn't mean anything compared to his brother. we know that. but you guys also know c.j. and he's got our backs as much as we -- as any of us and we got his, man. special day for us, guys. and i'm so thankful for you guys that you could do that for him. because that was the last thing he said to me and i know that still meant a lot to him. >> clayton beathard's 21-year-

bridge. traffic looks heavier here than the bay bridge. it's a nice, sunny picture. i wanted to juxtapose this picture with the sunol grade in fremont, sunny at the golden gate bridge and foggy in fremont. i thought that was interesting. it's usually the exact opposite about six months from now in the summertime. it will be -- it's kind of flip- flopped for this time of the year. >> absolutely. this is a different type of fog. we are looking at that ground fog that is also radiational fog, a little bit of moisture lingering from the storm from this past weekend and the cold temperatures and, yes, it's our valley locations that are seeing most of that fog this morning. there's a look at san francisco. a beautiful start here. partly cloudy, mostly clear for the afternoon. and dry today. here's a look at some of the rainfall amounts from this latest system that moved through on sunday, bringing us a good amount of rain. san francisco picked up almost 1/2" as well as santa rosa. orinda a little bit more than

fishing. this is when a thief manages to get a sticky substance on the -- targets are the big outdoor mailboxes. people can avoid be victims by avoiding mail drops during certain times and days of the week. >> try not to maul something outdoors, after the last collection time of the day. every box has a posted collection time so you certainly don't want your mail sitting in the box overnight or overnight on a saturday into a sunday when it's not going to be collected for more than 48 hours. >> investigators say the holidays aren't the only times thieves are focused. they are also active around the first and the 15th of the month, because that's usually when people receive their government checks as well as send their mortgage or rent payments. petaluma police department asking for the public's help to identify two people. police say this man and woman stole a wallet someone had left on the countertop at a petaluma market on saturday december

14th. police say the suspects then allegedly charged more than $1700 on the victim's credit card in stores, supermarkets, a movie theater and a cigarette shop. anyone that may have some information should call the petaluma police. san anselmo police are warning people about another credit card skimming device found at a local gas station. it was discovered at the gas and shop station on sir frances drake boulevard near spalding drive earlier in the month. they are used to capture debit and credit card numbers as well as personal i.d. numbers. they found 286 credit card skimmers so far this year but believe many, many more were probably planted and not discovered before identity thieves removed them. there's a new list of the rudest cities in the country. finishing out the top five are los angeles, washington, d.c., chicago and boston. people living in los angeles say that residents don't have

this is on westbound 80 at air base parkway. single vehicle crash, ambulance on the way. there's also a tow truck at the scene south of there, westbound 780 at south hampton road there's a collision as well and they screwed up so you can see where that is in the benicia area. the westbound 80 corridor looks good overall except for report of a crash at the toll plaza, but we have been checking that toll plaza camera and isn't backing traffic up at all. it is a really easy drive on the toll plaza which we will show you in about eight minutes. look at your drive on westbound highway 24 through lafayette, traffic here light as well. 8:32. go back to the desk. planning to leave on a long holiday trip today or tomorrow give yourself plenty of time because according to aaa a record 150 million americans are expected to travel this holiday season, that's the highest number we have seen in almost 20 years. most of them will drive with the worst traffic expected the day after christmas. nearly 7 million travelers are expected to fly and that's a 5% increase from last year. the most we have seen since

2003. >> going to airport is more stressful, you are stuck in traffic as you go. a bunch of people all around. you can't find a spot to sit waiting for your plane. >> it's more expensive and more inconvenient but you're going to places where you are excited to see people so it's worth it. >> get to the airports at least two hours ahead of flights. if you're taking gifts do not wrap them yet because if they need to be inspected agents will have to open the gifts up. snow country, lake tahoe, expect to be putting chains on tires. interstate 80 has been cleared recently but chp says even those drivers should carry chains just in case the next storm dumps more snow than snow plows and scrapers can handle. experienced drivers had some other advice for people who are on their way to the mountains for the holidays. >> i do a lot of driving up and down through the mountains, but i didn't think i would be coming up here when it would be

organization will give out more than 18,000 toys to 6000 kids in need. some families really rely on this to help their kids have a merry christmas. sacred heart has hosted this event every year for the last five decades and helped so many families in the process. the event today started at 7:00 a.m. so people have been shopping now for an hour and a half and every time the shelves seem bare, volunteers restock them to make sure each child gets enough gifts. volunteers are really the backbone of this toy box day. they got here at 4:00 this morning to get the space ready and then spent the day shopping. each family is paired with a volunteer and they get to walk through these rooms and pick two toys, one book and a stocking stuffer for each child. this event is for families that reregistered with sacred heart. we spoke with one woman who is shopping for her two daughters. she told us how important it is to have a resource like this when money is tight. >> happy because i saved money on other food or something like that. and, yeah, i'm happy to get this

this. >> reporter: sacred heart brings the communities together to address poverty in silicon valley. they are still looking for volunteers to work christmas eve so if you're interested, head to their website, sacred heart cs.org for details. the organization is also still accepting toy donations at its donation station on south first street in san jose. if you can't stop by you can donate money on the website to help families this holiday season. now, back out here live, this is probably my favorite room out of this entire place because they are blasting christmas music. i am having a great time. i know a lot of the families here, a lot of smiles on their faces. everyone is very, very grateful and appreciative of the opportunity to shop for their families this christmas. there's a lot of stuff here. and like i said, every time the shelves seem bare, the volunteers come and put more employees on the shelves so there's no shortage of gifts this holiday season for all of the families in need. this event started at 7:00 this

cdc estimates that this flu season has caused at least 1800 deaths so far. health officials say 19 of those cases were children. "usa today" reports nearly every state has shown an elevated number of flu cases. officials say most patients are infected with a strain called b

victoria. cdc says that particular strain does not normally appear until the end of the season and generally affects children or young adults. here's today's opening bell. the start of the trading day on wall street. shares were mostly lower today and fairly quiet trading. of course we are heading into an abbreviated week because of the christmas holiday. dow futures headed for a third straight gain. a fresh record to start a holiday abbreviated week. investors focusing in on a new report that says china cutting tariffs, pharmaceuticals and high tech components starting january 1st so take a peek at the numbers. they are a little bit higher than when we checked last time but not by much. dow jones hanging onto a 100 plus point game. the s&p making a small gain. the nasdaq up by one third of 1%. if you're out doing last minute holiday shopping over the weekend you were not alone. experts estimate americans spent more than $34 billion on saturday and sunday. that's 2 1/2 billion dollars more than black friday shopping.

a lot of money being spent this holiday season. national retail federation predicts the average american will spend about $1050, that's the most money since they started keeping track. a new report compares the hottest and coldest housing markets in the country and finds four bay area cities near the bottom of the list. san francisco is one of the coldest housing markets in the country. it ranks 97th, and the reality hop report says sales are down 1.5% from their asking prices. oakland is 95th with sales prices 5% from the list price. san jose is 84th, selling for 3.7% off the list price. even the hottest city on the list, gilbert, arizona, average sales prices down more than one 1/2%. the class action lawsuit said heating, ventilation in ac
