morning, let's show you the maps. we want to check in on that commute coming from tracy. things look all clear there. if you're driving 80 north marina in the hayward area. be aware there is a report of a fire just off the freeway. so you may notice some of that smoke. and flames there. the highway four commute hasn't gotten going yet . so that's a good time to get out on the road. if that's where you're driving this morning bay bridge toll plaza is very empty. let's go back to the desk. alright thanks, sally. fire crews on the scene of the washburn fire burning in your 70 national park say the rugged terrain is making it tough to slow the spread of the flames. so far, the fire has burned more than 2000 acres since thursday, and this morning, it is still at 0% containment. firefighters say they are faced with difficult terrain and they're heavy fuels around this fire, including a lot of dead trees, some that are still standing and could be also extremely dangerous if they fall. ktvu is elissa harrington tells us the main efforts are protecting assembly, sequoia grove and defending the nearby community of wawona.

firefighters continue to battle the washburn fire in yosemite national park, trying to keep flames away from the famed mariposa grove about 500 towering sequoias are threatened. some are more than 2000 years old. it's an emotional type of situation to be in because these trees have just really stood the test of time. and there's such a key part of our american history. robbie johnson, a public information officer said fire crews made a strong ground effort sunday. crews have been digging containment lines by hand and are trying to create a perimeter. they also want to keep flames low to protect the iconic trees. so they're out there using chainsaws, you know, picking up huge pieces of wood. with their bare hands and moving it out of the way to create a perimeter around particular trees. um in another case, water is being used to create more humidity around the trees. several campgrounds had to be

evacuated. part of highway 41 is closed and the fire is dangerously close to the town of wawona. the fire more than doubled in size over the weekend , more than 2000 acres of timber and brush have burned aircrews work grounded saturday evening because of thick smoke and lack of visibility. but sunday, helicopters and planes were back in the air. you can see it's still pretty smoky out here. but we are seeing some really improves smoke conditions. the washburn fire has been burning since thursday afternoon. the cause is under investigation. elissa harrington ktvu, fox two news. thank you. alyssa cal. fire crews continue to make steady progress against the electric fire burning in the sierra foothills. it has burned seven square miles in amador county and calvary's counties. since it started on the fourth of july. no homes have been

damaged or destroyed. all evacuation orders have been lifted and most roads including all of highway 49 have reopened. contra costa fire officials are asking everyone stay away from a section of willow pass road in pittsburgh because of a smoldering fire. their fire started last month in the pittsburgh marsh near the decommissioned power plant on the delta. it did create some heavy smoke this past weekend and that drew the attention from people nearby, including drone operators, and it made it difficult for firefighting aircraft to fly over the fire area. cal fire says it has stopped the expansion of the fire, but it could take several more days before it is actually completely out. you can find updates around the clock on the wildfires burning here in california just go to ktvu dot com slash show slash wildfires. well, there's been another drowning at lake berryessa, the napa county sheriff's office says. 18 year olds. they're wattoo fairly of elio drowned in the middle creek day use area yesterday. the sheriff's office

is fairly withstanding analog when he slipped into the water, and often the police officer was able to pull him to shore and often the nurses tried to revive him, but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. this is the third drowning at lake berryessa in two weeks. in the guatemalan community in the east bay is pitching in to support three men who drowned in the delta while trying to save a young boy last weekend s ktvu. greg liggins tells us the families are now trying to raise money. to send their bodies back home to guatemala. music food and drink flowing at bondi park in west oakland, which had a festive atmosphere for a somber occasion, the daughter of one of the three men who drowned helped organize this fundraiser. to help pay expenses to send her father's body and those of two others back to guatemala. it's very important, you know the family and their religion come back and guatemala edwin rivas, danilo gutierrez and edwin perez drowned july 3rd while on a

fishing trip near brandon island in the sacramento delta. they were among several men who jumped in the water to save an eight year old boy. juan cabrera was one of those who tried to help was so strong start to struggling to cabrera says he to other men and the boy barely made it out. and he had one explanation as to why he survived. i don't know. god god , that's the only way wendy rivas says. it will cost roughly $15,000 each to return the men home for burials in guatemala. all of the food drink and donations here will go toward that end one woman, not part of the guatemalan community shared why she felt compelled to attend the fundraiser and donate that child. that child and then their loss. that's a great loss. three men, you know, three men and they get them back home. councilman noel gayo new and praised the three men who lived in his district, the fruitvale. there were regular volunteers

emergency. that would free up federal funds to expand reproduction, health services and all 50. us states. president biden discussed this proposal with reporters during a brief break from his sunday bike ride . the president says his fight for abortion rights will not end there. my ultimate goal is to reinstate roe v. wade is a national law by passing it in the united states congress and i'll sign it the moment that happens. president biden also called on abortion rights demonstrators to continue their marches and rallies in cities across the country. an activist group is offering up to $250 to anyone who spots and shares the location of any of the six supreme court justices who voted to overturn roe versus wade last month. the group shut down d. c says it will pay $50 to anyone who shares a confirmed sighting. and it tweeted. it will pay $200 more if the justice is still there for half an hour or longer . now, this comes days after justice brett kavanaugh left a d. c restaurant because protesters showed up there. twitter told axios in an email

18 senate majority leader chuck schumer has tested positive for covid 19 just before the senate is set to return to work. a spokesperson says he has quote very mild symptoms and that the 71 year old new york senators fully vaccinated and double boosted. he will now quarantine and work remotely. schumer's positive test will add a new challenge to the democratic leaders plans to try to pass a major package. of legislation in the coming weeks. new covid cases are on the rise across the country. public health officials fear those numbers could rise further as the summer travel season continues, doctors say, omicron some variance. be a foreign be a five or behind the rise and infections almost in a place where the vaccine is still

working, but it's not working as well as it used to be, so we need to go back to layering our protection. according to the cdc . the daily average for new infections tops 106,000 hospitalizations are also rising, but not nearly as fast as during the previous waves. now the number of people in bay area hospitals with covid has hit the highest point in five months. the state department of public health says. there are now 770 people in the hospital with covid in the bay area that's as high as it has been since february, and while the total number of new covid cases per day remains mostly steady. public health experts believe many people are not reporting the results of their at home test that leads to a large undercount of positive cases. parents in the bay area are vaccinating their young children faster than the rest of the country, somebody area county say in the three weeks since the shots became available for children under five they've seen between 10 and 15% of babies and toddlers get their first shot.

well, that's lower than some health officials had hoped. it's much higher than the 1.5% of young children nationwide who have gotten their first shot. but some bay area counties like napa and sonoma are still in single digit percentages with children under five. firefighters in berkeley and oakland rushed to put out a brush fire near the claremont hotel. this is video from citizen app that fire quickly spread to a nearby structure yesterday afternoon at stonewall road and claremont avenue. people who live in the area said that they heard what sounded like two large explosions before seeing the flames in their neighborhood. no word yet on exactly what caused the fire. this week. it's about to get more expensive to park at the san francisco international airport. ktvu is james torres tells us how much more you should expect to pay. summer travel is now in full swing, and you may notice that you're paying a little bit more for this year's summer vacation than in years past, and now some of that money will be going toward parking garages at sfl. the san

francisco airport is packed with summer travelers. there's little sister is turning 80, but the price to travel is growing tough. it's pretty pricey. add parking fees to the growing list of what's becoming pricey sfl announcing the daily maximum rate for long term parking will increase from $18 to now, $25. that's a very big increase. $25 a day is a lot of money to pay off. airport parking is a lot cheaper than that if you're willing to get that bit of extra time, but and you can't find cheaper if you look around, it seems like they everything has gone up. yeah even the uber drive like we didn't park we took uber, but even that was more expensive, sfl says you can still save a few bucks. you can reserve a parking spot on the airport's website. and if you book by monday, you can still get that $18 rate no matter when your trip is after this week, lower rates might still be available, depending on demand of parking for whatever day you're looking to fly. you found

three leaked documents suggest san francisco based uber defied taxi regulations and overstepped workers' rights and its quest to win business. ktvu lamonica peters has reaction from the ridesharing company and a taxi advocacy group. taxi availability has suffered for passengers and drivers. incomes have suffered quite a lot. the guardian along with the international consortium of investigative journalists, released a report sunday detailing how uber use technology to fend off government investigations. hired lobbyists to help them evade taxi regulations and how they avoided paying taxes all over the world they launched charging passengers two rides without any um. legal oversight whatsoever in terms of insurance, passenger safety drivers screening anything so their launch was

illegal. and they were later. sort of, um legitimized by the california public utilities commission investigation found that uber secretly asked politicians for favors used offshore accounts to hide money and discuss the benefits of its drivers being violently attacked to gain public sympathy. in response to the report, uber released a statement saying, in part we have not and will not make excuses for past behavior that is clearly not in line with our present values. instead we asked the public to judge us by what we've done over the last five years and what we will do in the years to come, says they've made significant changes , including hiring a new ceo, improving safety standards and committing to having a diverse workforce. still angle says the taxi industry is forever changed. and now they're doing what they can to stay afloat in these ever changing times were

trolley. now officials in mexico are working with caltrans and other agencies to figure out logistics involved in creating the trolley route between san diego and tijuana. some people think the trolley would shorten lines of cars at the border. sleep in my car and go to work and then go home shower and hit back the line again. and, you know, it's just people do what they gotta do, and i think it would make it a little bit better for those that choose or have to live over there. others worry that the lines to take the trolley would get longer as officials check to make sure travelers have the proper paperwork. i don't think it's going to be a good idea, because if working, there's a lot of people imagine on the trolley now u. s customs and border protection workers have no official comment on the exact project. the project is only in its early planning stages. they do stress that they inspect every person and every vehicle going through ports of entry. a cyclist from the uk is nearing the end of an 18 state tour from new york city to san francisco.

area could see or smell some smoke. today the air quality advisory is set for both the east bay and the north bay. so that clear picture of what we really need is the fog to come moving in. help a lot of that. but rosemary oroczo about the beaches earlier there are places to go if where you are is in those nineties and you're needing a break. i mean, that's the nice thing about the bait. can't talk about the bay area. exactly what you were trying to say. thank you. yes good morning. to both of you. we are looking at, you know, cool weather along the coastline areas like pacifica half moon bay. i was in carmel yesterday and he has some fog there close to the coast. so depending on where you're at, we have that summertime spread going on 30 to 35 degree difference, depending on where you are from. one end of the bay area to the other, meanwhile, are inland cities will get close to the century mark. at least some of those hotter spots today we'll check in on your current conditions. line up your afternoon highs and i have a cool down to speak

about in the extended forecast coming up. at five o'clock. let's take a look at traffic this morning with ali. good morning. thanks rosemary. yeah thank goodness for that fog and you can see it in some of our traffic cameras this morning as well in certain spots, but we're going to start with the map so you can take a look at the commute. coming in. from tracy. there's a crash earlier. westbound 5 88 northland road that's been cleared, but you can see a bit of a backup there because of that. what's also cleared up. is this a crash at westbound 80 at el portal that has been moved out of the scene. but and now the lanes have been reopened. it was all lanes were shut down. at one point. all lines are now open, but it's going to take some time. for that commute to recover. so we're looking at a 30 minute drive plus from the cockiness bridge, the mcarthur maze once you get to the vape bridge toll plaza, things are light time is +502. let's go back to the desk. thanks ali. firefighters are trying to contain the washburn fire that is burning in your assembly. national park ktvu james torres joins us live from the studio to explain what firefighters are trying to protect. and how they are also

dealing with this rough terrain. james with claudine. good morning to you, we'll let this point. there is still zero containment on this fire. it's now burned more than 2000 acres. an update from yosemite national park. and all that smoke is now creating an air quality advisory right here in the bay area. let's show you the latest video coming from the scene of the washburn fire more than 300 firefighters assigned to the scene. some surrounded by flames, and they say those flames threatening the park's mariposa grove there about 500 giant sequoia trees there some more than 2000 years old to keep the area more humid and prevent the trees from burning. firefighters have a sprinkler system surrounding the trees. they've also conducted a number of prescribed burns to get rid of much as much fire fuel as possible. an emotional type of situation to be in because these trees have just really stood the test of time. and there's such a key part of our american history. so far, the fire has entered a danger zone to the grove and to the nearby community of wawona. but fire crews say none of the sequoia

trees so far have sustained serious damage. one challenge in getting this fire under control , firefighters say is the rough terrain. it's making hard to slow the spread of those flames despite those prescribed burns. there are still a number of dead trees and other parts of yosemite still standing in that poses a risk to firefighters, not just if they ignite, but if they fall over, pam all right. thank you. james cal fire crews continued to make steady progress against the electric fire burning in the sierra foothills. that fire has burned seven square miles in amador and kill calaveras counties since it started on the fourth of july, no homes. have been damaged or destroyed. all evacuation orders have been lifted and most roads , including all of highway 49 have reopened. contra costa fire officials are asking everyone to stay away from a section of willow pass road in pittsburgh because of fire there. that fire started just last month in the pittsburgh marsh near the decommissioned power plant on the delta. it did create heavy

smoke this past weekend, and that drew the attention from people nearby, including some drone operators, and that got in the way of firefighting aircraft to fly over the fire area. cal fire says it has stopped the expansion of the fire. but it could take several more days before it is out. now don't forget you can find updates around the clock on the wildfires burning. just go to ktvu .com slash wildfires. there's been another drowning at lake berryessa. the napa county sheriff's office says 18 year olds there what, two fairly of the leo ground in this middle creek day use area yesterday. the sheriff's office is fairly was standing on a log when he slipped into the water and after the police officer was able to pull him to shore and after the nurses tried to revive him. he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. this was the third drowning at lake berryessa. into weeks, and the guatemalan community in the east bay is pitching in to support three men who drowned in the delta while trying to save a young boy last

weekend s ktvu greg liggins tells us the families are now trying to raise money to send their bodies back home to guatemala. music, food and drink flowing at raimondi park in west oakland, which had a festive atmosphere for a somber occasion . the daughter of one of the three men who drowned helped organize this fundraiser. to help pay expenses to send her father's body and those of two others back to guatemala. it's very important, you know the family and the religion come back and guatemala three men edwin rivas, danilo gutierrez and edwin perez drowned july 3rd while on a fishing trip near brandon island in the sacramento delta. they were among several men who jumped in the water to save an eight year old boy. juan cabrera was one of those who tried to help a strong start to struggling to cabrera says he to other men and the boy barely made it out. and he had one explanation as to why he survived. i don't know. god god,

that's the only way wendy riva says. it will cost roughly $15,000 each to return the men home for burials in guatemala. all of the food drink and donations here will go toward that end one woman, not part of the guatemalan community shared why she felt compelled to attend the fundraiser and donate that child. that child and then their loss. that's a great loss. three men, you know, three men and they get them back home. councilman noel gayo new and praised the three men who lived in his district, the fruitvale. there were regular volunteers every saturday and every sunday morning from eight o'clock to 12 noon. clean the neighborhood, illegal dumping, working with the homeless encampments. cleaning the schools, even and they were there well over 200 attended the event, and thousands have already been donated online. rivas says she's comforted by the overwhelming support extended to her father. and his two amigos. i have a

little more peace because i know the support and i know that people don't my dad. and friends to meet campaign with the goal of $45,000 is now at nearly 38,000. wendy rivas says when you include an upcoming car wash next week, she's confident they'll raise enough money to send the three amigos home. greg legans, ktvu fox two news. nice to see that support. thank you, greg. president biden is now considering a new option in his battle against the supreme court decision that overturned roe versus wade. the president says he may declare abortion access a public health emergency. that would free up federal funds to expand reproduction health services in all, 50 states. president biden discussed this proposal with reporters during a brief break from his sunday bike ride. the president says his fight for abortion rights will not end. my ultimate goal is to reinstate roe v. wade is a national law by passing it in the united states congress and

i'll sign it the moment that happens. president biden also called on abortion rights demonstrators to continue their marches and rallies in cities across the country. an activist group is offering up to $250 to anyone who spots and shares and location of any of the six supreme court justices who voted to overturn roe versus wade last month. the group shut down d. c. says it will pay $50 to anyone who shares a confirmed sighting. and it tweeted that it will pay $200 more if the justice is still there for half an hour or longer. this comes days after justice brett kavanaugh left a d . c restaurant because protesters showed up twitter told axios in an email that the tweet is not in violation of twitter's safety policies. today, a group in san francisco is turning in signatures to try to reopen both jfk drive in golden gate park and the great highway two cars. the group access for all says the closures of the two roads have limited people's ability to access the areas. but now trying to get a measure on the november ballot

avoided paying taxes all over the world they launched charging passengers two rides without any um. legal oversight whatsoever in terms of insurance, passenger safety drivers screening anything so their launch was illegal. and they were later. sort of, um legitimized by the california public utilities commission. the investigation found that uber secretly asked politicians for favors used offshore accounts to hide money and discuss the benefits of its drivers being violently attacked to gain public sympathy. in response to the report, uber released a statement saying, in part we have not and will not make excuses for past behavior that is clearly not in line with our present values. instead we asked the public to judge us by what we've done over the last five years and what we will do

in the years to come, says they've made significant changes , including hiring a new ceo, improving safety standards and committing to having a diverse workforce. still angle says the taxi industry is forever changed. and now they're doing what they can to stay afloat in these ever changing times were recovering somewhat. uh uber prices are quite high a lot of the times and people are turning back to cabs. and we're trying to meet the demand. much of the report is based on emails, texts and invoices from uber back then now 90% of the people who are with the company when it launched are no longer there. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. well elon musk spent his weekend at a tech conference in idaho following his attempt to pull out of his $44 billion takeover of twitter. musk is blaming a lack of transparency in the company's data about how much of its user base is made up

quirkiness bridge to the mcarthur maze. taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic here is pretty light metering lights, not on just yet . continue to check on that, though. 5 31, let's go back to the desk. all right. thank you. ali happening today, the japanese consulate in san francisco is setting up a book of condolences for people to sign after the assassination of former japanese president prime minister shinzo abe. now anyone is welcome to come to the consulate on battery street today and tomorrow between 10 o'clock in the morning and four o'clock in the afternoon to sign the book in japan. there will be a memorial for today. he will be buried tomorrow at a private funeral arranged by his family and friends just two days after a baby was killed, japan held its scheduled parliamentary election, the current prime minister, fumio kishida, will now have the support he needs to continue to roll without interruption until 2025. he said he is grateful for the bit wind but said it will be hard to keep his ruling party together without shinzo abe. with the

victory, kishida can now move forward with his plans to change the japanese constitution, which was drafted by the us at the end of world war two. japan wants to build a stronger military, which is banned by the current constitution. president biden is preparing to welcome mexico's president to the white house tomorrow. mexican president andres manuel lopez over door refused biden's invitation to the summit of the americas in los angeles last month. lopez over door disagrees with the white house on trade, foreign policy, energy and climate change his relationship with former president trump focused only on stopping migrants from coming to the us from across the mexican border. now later this week, president biden is going to make his first official visit to the middle east since he was vice president in jerusalem. us flags are already being put in place and helicopters are flying low level security missions over the city. mr biden is going to meet with israeli leaders to discuss how to advance israel's growing alliance with arab countries to fight the growing threat of iran. he is also going

to meet with palestinian officials and could announce new economic support. he is going to end the trip with a stop in saudi arabia. secretary of state mentally antony blinken says the biden administration is closely watching sri lanka after mass protests forced the prime minister and president to announce they would resign. we condemn any violence against peaceful protesters and journalists. ah it's really thinking people have a right to protest peacefully raise their voices. ah the same time we called for a full investigation. arrest prosecution of anyone involved in any protest related violence. thousands of people have been protesting shortages of food, medicine and fuel around the country. protesters are now occupying the homes of the president and the prime minister. they are promising to stay there until the resignations become official. president says he will leave on wednesday. the prime minister says he will step aside once there is a new leadership in place. now to ukraine, where the latest attack by russia has killed 15 people and trapped

several others in the rubble of a five story apartment building reporter lucas tom wilson has more on russia's efforts to take control of eastern ukraine. russian forces are slowly making gains in eastern ukraine and now control over 20% of the country. we spoke to some ukrainians who have fled the onslaught. they are shooting heavily. last night , my neighbor's house was burnt . then they hit the city center. people had their hands and legs torn off. in our school or about three days ago school was bombed . so my child has nowhere to go to school. that's why we decided to leave. it was hard. they shall train station market store central market. we had victims, and it happened in different places. in recent days, russian forces have taken over the luhansk region in eastern ukraine under heavy artillery barrage. russia wants to take over neighboring the next province next completing the takeover. the dumbass region, the rust belt of ukraine. the

gasbuddy nearly 7000 gas stations in the u. s are now selling gas for less than $4 a gallon. that's up from last week , when only about 2000 stations selling gas at that price. the nationwide average, though, remains at 4 68 a gallon it is down 13 cents from a week ago and 30 cents from last month. as always, as we know. prices in california are much higher than they are also dropping, according to triple a. the statewide averages. now 609 a gallon you can find some locations selling gas for less than $6 here in the bay area a week ago. the statewide average was 6 24 last month. it was 6 43. well if you fill up your tank today, you could also score yourself a free slurpee. today is july. 11th also known as 7 11 , and that means it's time for another free slurpee day at all 7 11 locations this year, the convenience store chain is celebrating its 95th birthday. the promotion also includes $1 deals on snacks like hot dogs

many parts of the economy are experiencing varying levels of distress. the job market continues to show remarkable strength. the federal government says jobs increased by 372,000 with unemployment at a low low 3.6% lower than what many economists consider as full employment. private sector is now recovered all the jobs lost during the pandemic. and added jobs. on top of that largest gains were seen in wage growth has been historically lower wage workers and yet strangely, there's trouble in the economy. we have a dynamic here that we haven't really seen. in california over the past 40 years. um where you have these other indicators worsening unemployment still holding up? those indicators. interest rates way up. inflation way up, stocks are down in bear territory, but the job market is solid 11.3 million. job openings still

nationwide, at least over a million job openings here in california and get this the number of workers voluntarily leaving their jobs often. for better ones. the numbers remain very high nationwide over 4.3 million instances of so called quits. we haven't seen yet a large number of layoffs in many industries, layoffs or taboo airlines, health services, hospitality and leisure are still desperate for workers. the airlines in particular because workers shortages in the last year wages have gone up 5.1. but all of that has been eaten up by 8.6% inflation, causing some people to look for higher paying jobs. the job market is staving off the biggest but still unrealized fear. stagflation that is the situation where the economy has high unemployment and high inflation at the same

san rafael bridge. no back up here to tell you about which is good news, and we are also going to check on that issue or freeway drive. things moving smoothly there as well. bay bridge toll plaza is light time is six o'clock, let's go back to the desk. thank you. ali fire crews fighting the washburn fire in mariposa county, including parts of yosemite national park, say they are facing some big challenges. ktvu james torres joins us now in studio to talk about what firefighters are doing. says they are going to hold a meeting to update the nearby communities is certainly a very concerning james cpm. good morning to you. that meeting scheduled at the oakhurst community center that's about 20 miles away from the center of that fire. they're firefighters will answer questions and give people in the area and overall update and where they stand in getting the flames under control. she's now some video, the latest video of what that scene looks like taking overnight at this point containment is still at 0% and the fire has grown more than 2000 acres more than 300.

firefighters are doing what they can to keep it from growing, but that's been a little bit of a challenge. crews are now dealing with the rugged terrain and the many dead trees feeling the fire. one big concern. is the threat to the mariposa grove that's home to more than 500 giant sequoia trees. water is being used to create more humidity around the trees that create some moisture just to give that extra boost of protection because these truths really are protected by a lot of efforts out here. with prescribed burns over the years. to protect some of the largest trees. firefighters have a sprinkler system surrounding them. the fire generated so much smoke. there is now an air quality advisory in place here in the bay area. for some context, yosemite is about 150 miles away from oakland. that community meeting is set to start tonight at seven o'clock. yosemite park officials are still working on the details for a live stream of that meeting. after a day of dangerous smoke. helicopters are now in the air again, so we'll soon get an update on whether any

containment has been achieved. pam all right. thank you. james and cal. fire crews continue to make some steady progress against the electric fire that's burning in the sierra foothills . that fire has burned seven square miles in amador and calaveras county since it started on the fourth of july. no homes have been damaged or destroyed. all evacuation orders have been lifted and most roads , including all of highway 49 have reopened. contra costa fire officials are asking everyone to stay away from a section of willow pass road in pittsburgh because of a fire there. that fire started last month in the pittsburgh march near the decommissioned power plant on the delta. it did create some heavy smoke this past weekend, and that drew the attention from people nearby, including some drone operators, and that got in the way of firefighting aircraft to fly over the fire area. fire says it has stopped the expansion of the fire, but it could take several more days before it is out. you can find updates around the clock on the wildfires burning goat ktvu .com slash wildfires. there's been

another drowning at lake berryessa, the napa county sheriff's office says. 18 year old zaire what to fairly of galileo? drowned in this middle creek day use area yesterday. the sheriff's office is fairly was standing on a log when he slipped into the water off duty police officer was able to pull into shore. and after the nurses tried to revive him, but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. this was the third drowning at lake berryessa in two weeks, and that drowning at lake berryessa happened on the same day that a somber fundraiser was held in oakland. it was in response to another tragic incident on the water. ktvu is andre senior joins us live in the newsroom with more on that story. andre was a fundraiser in the east bay organized by leaders of the guatemalan community here in the bay area this weekend, dozens of members of that community gathered to help the families. of three men who drowned in the delta. they jumped in the water to try and rescue a young boy. the fundraiser was held yesterday to park in west oakland. the goal was to help

pay the expenses of sending the bodies of the men. back to their homes and families in guatemala , a daughter of the men who drowned one of the men who drowned attended the fundraiser is very important. you know the family and their religion. come back and guatemala. the men drowned july 3rd while on a fishing trip near brennan island in the sacramento delta. they were among several men who jumped into the water to save an eight year old boy. the boy was eventually rescued. oakland city council member noel gayo was among those who attended yesterday's fundraiser new. the three men who lived in fruitvale, the district he represents. there were regular volunteers every saturday and every sunday morning from eight o'clock to 12 noon. clean the neighborhood, illegal dumping, working with the homeless encampments cleaning the schools, even and they were there. organizers estimated will cost roughly $45,000 to

transport all the victim's home for burial. these three men have been hailed as heroes for rushing to save the child. but safety experts say these drownings still serve as an important reminder for everyone heading to the water this summer. they say, you should never swim alone, especially in the areas where there are no lifeguards. safety experts say everyone should know their physical limitations while in the water and the stress alcohol use increases danger for anyone swimming or on a boat back to you. in bay area hospitals with covid has hit the highest point five months. the state department of public health says there are now 770 people in the hospital with covid here in the bay area that's as high as it has been since february, while the total number of new covid cases per day remains mostly steady. public health experts believe many people are not reporting the results of their at home test that leads to a large undercount of positive cases across the country.

doctors are warning of a growing covid surge fueled by the b a five oh macron sub variant and the summer travel season. cdc data shows that new, more contagious variant is now the dominant strain of covid here in the us the variant prompted new york city health officials to once again recommend facemasks indoors and in large crowds outdoors. we're almost in a place where the vaccine is still working, but it's not working as well as it used to be. so we need to go back to layering our protection. but we're observing now is an increase the number of cases and it just goes to show you that the covid not going away. researchers are working on new forms of vaccine boosters. g children faster th area counties say in the three weeks since the shots became available for kids under five they've seen between 10 and 15% of babies and

discussed the proposal with reporter break from his sunday bike ride. the president says his fight for abortion rights will not end there. my ultimate goal is to reinstate roe v. wade is a national law by passing it in the united states congress and i'll sign it the moment that happens. president biden also called on abortion rights demonstrators to continue their marches and their rallies in cities across the country. one bay area doctor is now getting national attention for her plans to launch a boat as an abortion clinic in the gulf of mexico. dr mega tree is an obstetrician and professor at the university of california, san francisco. she tells the associated press that she is now making plans to create a floating medical clinic in the federal roger waters off the gulf. that boat could provide abortions near the southern states where the procedure is banned or limited happening today, the oakland city council will take a final vote on several measures that could change the local government. there are two proposals that would limit the number of terms. a council

pedestrians and recreation. and right now, the great highways closed to cars on weekends for that same reason. the biden administration is now investigating the trend of delayed and canceled flights that we've been seeing across the country. transportation secretary pete buttigieg's says . despite some recent improvements, airlines are not meeting at acceptable level of service. he also says he is opposed to raising the age limit for pilots to help avert staffing shortages. the answer is not to keep the baby boomer generation in the cockpit indefinitely. the answer is to make sure that we have as many and as good pilots ready to take their place to have a stronger pipeline. we're backing that up with faa programs that support high school and college curriculum to get into aviation . and of course, ultimately, it will be for the airlines and those employers. to hire and retain excellent talent. meanwhile at least one airline ceo is blaming the government and the faa for delays. the head of the united airlines has 50% of delays and 75% of

cancelations over the past four months were because of shortages of air traffic controllers. starting this week. it is going to cost more to leave your car at the long term parking lot at san francisco international airport, sfo has announced the daily maximum rate for long term parking will increase from 18 to $25. that increase begins on friday. it's a very big increase. yeah, $25 a day is a lot of money to pay and the off airport parking is a lot cheaper than that. if you're willing to get that bit of extra time, but and you can't find cheaper if you look around. it seems like they everything has gone up. yeah even the uber drive like we didn't park we took uber, but even that was more expensive. sfo says the higher parking fee is due to the growing number of passengers who are now returning to the airport after the big slowdown in air travel during the pandemic. well it may soon become easier to figure out transfers between different bay area transit systems. the metropolitan transportation commission is spending $6 million to create a series of maps that will be used by all

chilling new evidence in the search for a missing woman from contra costa county. crumpled up letter could hold the key to where it to the whereabouts of alexis gabe. she's the 24 year old oakley woman who has been missing since late january. the letter contains handwritten directions by gabes ex boyfriend marshall jones, the main suspect in her disappearance. that letter has led authorities to the small rural town of pioneer in amador county. it's been the hardest, um 5.5 months of our lives. i mean, we've never expected that. we would be in this situation. um our house used to be. alexis father shared some of this new evidence in the

investigation into his daughter's disappearance. it included a letter from antioch police, which reads in part, we know that marshall jones wrote these directions to pioneer and believe he used them to dispose of alexis body near where the directions end. it also says jones told a friend he was thinking about killing alexis and wanted to know where to hide a body. we were definitely devastated when we when we saw that letter, we had no idea that he was capable of doing something like this, um when hee comes to visit or attend our family gathering. he's always been, um friendly. marshall jones was killed by police in a seattle suburb last month. video shows him charging at officers with a knife while they were trying to take him into custody. firefighters in berkeley and oakland rushed to put out a brush fire near the claremont

inland cities. not going to get any relief from that today. we also have this flow coming from this direction, and you can see the arrows there. and this is why we may actually get some of that. uh smoke come our way from the fires that are burning in the yosemite area, especially for the inner east bay. perhaps the north bay. around the bay area when it comes to the fog. take a look at half moon bay zero. visibility reported there at the moment, so it is very thick along highway one, and we're seeing it just at the golden gate as well. the onshore breeze through fairfield is very weak, 14 mph reported there and again those arrows coming from this direction, so the upper level flow and wind is a dry one. despite the weak onshore breeze at the surface 56 degrees right now in san francisco, we have upper sixties already in walnut creek. napa you are showing 57 outside your door. and for the afternoon today 94 in santa rosa 10 degrees above the seasonal average 74 for san

minutes to get from the cockiness bridge to the mcarthur maze. we do have some problems at other bridges, though we want to show the golden gate bridge where visibility is very low because of some heavy fog. the other bay area. bridges don't look like this. those it's just the golden gate toll plazas backed up and san mateo bridge has a crash on it, with some of the lanes blocked, but you won't have visibility issues on the other bridges. just this one. and with that we can turn things over to rosemary oroczo for look at our weather. it's foggy there , but it's still gonna be pretty warm everywhere else so soupy it's i can't even see the golden gate there if we have that thick fog along the coastline and just inside the bay there. outside of that plenty of sunshine to go around for today, and we are looking at a haze out there this morning. we're talking about the possibility of some of that smoke drift coming all the way from the washburn fire, especially for the inner east bay and the north bay. so that to be aware of, although i've been checking the air quality, and we are looking good at the

surface, we do also have an advisory for coastal flooding. this will happen this evening lasting until midnight. it is for our bayside communities as well as into the north bay low lying areas, including parking lots, roadways, parks, we do have a high tide coming in a little bit later this morning, but it's the evening high tide. that will be the concern with that coastal flooding, and that will be at 9 59 this evening. meanwhile storm tracker two is quite out there we do have a little bit of drizzle. especially along the coastline this morning as that marine layer is compressed by the high pressure that is overhead in the sinking air associated with it so low clouds fog, even low visibility along the coastline this morning and just inside the bay. get away from that, and we've got plenty of sunshine and temperatures rebounding this morning. oh, sixties right now in concord, we have 67 in brentwood in the north bay mid to upper fifties nevado napa 56 in san francisco. into the south
