that 1.2 billion prize. now we know of at least one person who had that winning ticket. it is the largest rather than third largest prize and a lot of history and got that high because for 29 straight days, no one had one or hit that jackpot here. no one had struck gold, but that winner not just not at ktvu, but it's not in california either. here's some of the details. it finally happened. at least one person is a whole lot richer this morning. those winning numbers 13 36 45 57 67. that mega ball number is 14. according to mega millions dot com the winning ticket was sold somewhere in illinois. we haven't yet heard of someone has claimed that prize as with many past big jackpots, so many people nationwide, including right here in the bay area, they tried their luck. they played the game. some saying that buying the tickets was just something they thought they'd try to do. some bought those tickets at the quick and convenient liquor store in fremont. why 10 years ago, someone bought the winning ticket. they're worth more than $50 million. and then four years later, someone else won a $10 million prize people we spoke to

seasonal, though. for this time of year. better details on what you can expect for your neighborhood coming up. all right. sad to report this story. but new this morning, there's one lucky lottery player who has become a billionaire overnight one ticket matched all six winning numbers for that huge $1.2 billion mega million jackpot. let's go to ktvu james torres, who joined us live to explain why you should still be checking your ticket because you could have earned some cash and james, you know it. it's something that you know you're trying to wrap your brain around the possibility of winning. i'm trying to wrap my brain around this guy or this woman or whoever this person who is waking up this morning like going home with hold onto this ticket very, very carefully. billion with a b and that's so funny. the game is called mega millions. but billions with a b is what they're going to claim a little later today or sometime this weekend, but you don't want to throw away that ticket just yet because there are some opportunities to earn from this game. let's talk about that. for a moment. those winning numbers
7:33 am
were 13 36 45 57 67 with the mega ball number at 14 if you match that mega ball number you immediately win $2. but if you have any of the other matching numbers beyond that, you can earn some more if you have at least four matching numbers, you start to earn hundreds of dollars. regardless if you got that mega number, so definitely be sure to check that ticket, according to mega millions .com that jackpot ticket was sold somewhere in illinois. there's also at least one winner in california that matched five numbers. experts say, while the winningest finals exciting if you're getting a lot of money, it's certainly worth handling that amount. responsibly. i would highly advise somebody who is the winner of the jackpot to, um you know, first celebrate, of course, but after you celebrate , start planning, and the best way to plan would be to hire a financial advisor. maybe contact us via or a tax attorney. the

odds of hitting the jackpot are one and 302 million, so it just really wasn't going to happen for most of us. the cash option for this prize is valued at more than $747 million, the third largest jackpot prize for this game, the largest ever died at $1.5 billion. that's about four years ago and the winter claimed that ticket in south carolina. now the most simple combination you can get on a lot of ticket on the mega millions. i think it's about three numbers that you match without the mega ball number that would get q $10. matched to without the mega ball number, so i'm just short of winning anything at all. but you get that mega ball number you get $2 you get a couple of numbers after that, you get just a little bit of cash. so again. don't throw that ticket away just yet. take a quick peek at it before you think you're not the winner. you're not the big winner. you might be a little winner, james torres ktvu. let's get back to you. all right, jim. hey, we're all winners. aren't

rocket is expected to crash to earth sometime today. nobody knows really exactly where or when, just yet, but scientists say it is possible that the space debris could come crashing down in northern california, not far from the oregon border. they're keeping a pretty close eye on the rockets path of this hour. most of that rocket debris is expected to burn up as it enters the atmosphere, but some larger pieces could make it to the ground. and there is at least one lucky lottery player who has become a billionaire overnight. that ticket not sold here in california. it was sold in illinois, and it matched all six winning numbers from that. huge $1.2 billion mega millions jackpot, but just in case you got five of the numbers, or perhaps for you can cash into their they are not your run of the mill 13 36 45 57 67 14 is your mega ball. friday night's jackpot was the second largest prize in the games 20 year

history. lot of lottery players right here at the bear. it joined others across the country in the rush to buy mega millions tickets last night. i went twice , by the way did did once at five o'clock once at seven o'clock, one of the more popular locations among those hoping to strike it. rich was the quick and convenient liquor store that's in fremont. 10 years ago , a ticket worth more than 50 million bucks was sold there. there was a $10 million lottery winner who bought a ticket hit that very same store four years ago. i didn't purchase a lot, but i mean, just one ticket a maybe the golden ticket, so just fingers crossed. i guess this is my very first time i had to, like, ask her for help, and i was like so nervous. but she bought one once again, one ticket sold in illinois outside chicago matched all 6 20 numbers for that huge $1.2 billion mega million jackpot. mega billion. i guess you should say it's still not clear if there any other big winners in california are here
8:33 am
in the bay area, but we did hear one ticket had at least five of the numbers. in california said don't throw them away just yet. yes you should check. absolutely i haven't checked my maybe that's mine. probably not. alright, friend. alright let's talk about the first group of mosquitoes that tested positive for the west nile virus this year that group of mosquitoes in contra costa county. those mosquitoes were collected in a trap. this was in the city of oakley. now the virus is transmitted from birds to mosquitoes, the mosquitoes and by humans, and that's how we get infected vector control, reminding people trying to get avoid those mosquito bites by wearing your insect repellent and long sleeve clothing, especially when you're out in the mornings and the evenings. they are also urging people to make sure you don't have any standing water around that could breed mosquitoes. while that's going on the avian flu or bird flu is turned up in the north bay, health officials say for wild birds tested positive for the virus in sonoma county, although humans normally do not
8:34 am
get the avian flu, the county health department says adam abundance of caution. it's warning people not to handle or coming close contact with dead or deceased, diseased birds, the virus can be transmitted through saliva. it does occur most commonly in the wild, migratory waterfowl and birds of prey. sacramento zoo is moving its flamingos and it's ducks to a quarantine area to keep them from contracting that avian flu, the u. s agriculture department , partly to blame the illness for the country's recent surge in egg prices. supplies are down because the flu has killed approximately 30 million egg producing birds. the search of new covid-19 cases in the bay area may be coming to an end, public health statistics published in today's chronicle showing the rate of new daily cases dropping to roughly 37 cases per 100,000 residents this week. that is a big improvement over the figure of 61 per 100,000 residents, which was recorded in late june when the

bay area was the state's covid-19 hotspots. however infectious disease experts stressing that is still too early to tell at the bay area has moved past the summer surge , driven by the highly contagious be a five oh macron sub variant. adults under 50 will have to wait a few more months before they can get their second covid-19 booster shot. us regulators were previously considering authorizing that second booster for all adults by the summer, but the fda now says it will wait for fizer and modernize booster shots that specifically target the newest sub variants. those shots are expected to be ready. by september. and we're talking about a recent study this morning that found that having young children in your household might boost immunity against severe covid-19 symptoms. the kaiser permanente study found that adults without children who contracted covid 1949% more likely to be hospitalized and 76% more likely to need icu treatment. then those infected
8:36 am
adults who had young children at home with the lead author of that study, dr. matthew sullivan , with kaiser permanente joins us now to further discuss the new study. dr solomon thanks so much for joining us. thanks so much for having this is so interesting. i think you know, like anyone who has young children in their household. no, the running noses. they come home. they're at school. they bring it all home, and everyone kind of gets sick at the same time, and there's a silver lining to it. it seems from this study is that general immunity kind of gets higher. we get used to maybe fighting off sickness. yeah definitely. i, um you know, i think ever since the pandemic started the medical community and really everybody in the world has been working feverishly to learn everything we can about this virus, and one of the most striking things about the virus is how it affects people so differently. you know, some people get mild infections, while others get severe or even deadly infections , and some seem to avoid getting infected altogether. um now we all know that the virus that causes covid-19 is in the
8:37 am
coronavirus family. but there are other coronavirus is that responsible for causing nearly a third of all common colds, and there's this idea of cross immunity, meaning that exposure to and the development of some immunity to one virus may provide some protection to another virus that has some similar molecular parts like viruses within the same family. so we wondered, could having a lot of colds prior to the pandemic have imparted some partial immunity to the covid-19 virus, and maybe explain some of that differential impact of covid within people. so then we thought well within kaiser permanente in northern california, where we care for 4.5 million people across the northern part of the state. and where, at our division of research, we do a lot of research and published hundreds of papers every year. how in our data? could we identify a group of people who get a lot of colds? and as a parent myself? i have children ages 11 and 13. i remembered well, how when my kids were little and in daycare , just like you said they would
8:38 am
come home and runny noses and we would all get sick. but one of the things i also remember about that was we would get sick for a while. and then eventually, even though the kids were getting sick, we didn't get sick anymore , and i started talking with others about that. and they kind of reported the same anecdotal phenomenon. and then i spoke to friends and colleagues and, uh, professions where they get exposed to young children like teachers who start their career or doctor media pediatricians who are starting their training , they reported getting sick in the beginning of their career when they're around the sniffling kids, and then not so much anymore, so maybe there's some bill what up immune defense that provides some partial immunity. so we thought, well, can we examine this for covid-19 ? how in our data? can we identify people who get a lot of colds because that's not something that's easily searched. so we said, well, maybe we can look at parents of very young children and then match them to people who look just like them for the risk of getting covid-19 or having severe covid illness, which, as you stated means, do you get
8:39 am
hospitalized or need the intensive care unit? so we looked at the parents of young children versus people who looked just like them same ages. same comorbidities that can cause severe covid-19 like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and even covid-19 risk score that was developed at kaiser permanently in publishing literature, and we found really striking findings. uh as you stated, let me let me introduce interrupt you really quickly, though. you know, in terms of anecdotal, you know, it is important that all of us have this idea, right? that. oh, you know, you know, a plus b equals c but how important is it to actually have the numbers? you have this wealth of information? as we try to get through covid we have we have these things that we think are true versus what the numbers show us and how shocking were these numbers because they're really pretty dramatic when you actually kind of lay them out there. they are. you know, the parents of young children actually got more covid-19 infections and about 15% higher rates of getting a
8:40 am
covid-19 infection, but they had much lower hospitalization and icu rates and i want to really stress, though our study is really hypothesis generating generating, it doesn't prove this point is not a causal study that says the effect is cross immunity, but it provides this epidemiologic signal that it could be out there. there have been a lot of smaller studies that have looked within people's blood and look for markers of past coronavirus, regular cold infections and look to see if that provided some protection of versus covid-19, and some of them clearly show it and others aren't so sure. so we thought, well. in our population database . can we see if there's a signal there, so it was very striking because i think you know the point is, it's not going to prevent you from getting covid. as you said, you might get more covid. but the idea is how do we prevent severe illness? how do we protect ourselves? and i'm not sure what that means for people who don't have small children. they're like, what am i supposed to do at this point trying to get get a cold, but it
8:41 am
does give us uh, you know, no, no. yeah we don't want to do that. the message and the message is want to make sure that we understand it better. yeah i think that you know what's important is that this helps us learn more about the virus that can help us think about future pandemics. because as i think this pandemic has made us think about immunity, more and more and maybe, and work even harder to understand it so we can test well, who may have some preexisting immunity, but i think the important one of the important take home point is that this by no means suggests that having small children and some salve that's going to protect you. everyone still needs to get vaccinated. but data are clear vaccines have saved countless lives and are one of the greatest medical success stories and you know, in fact, the pandemic you know, obviously has been a major tragedy and almost 200,000 children have lost parents to covid-19. so our data suggests that this potential effect may have provided some protection. but it's certainly not a cure all it's one more piece in a very complicated puzzle. alright, doctor, matthew solomon , we appreciate you joining us this morning. appreciate the insight. and adding to this
8:42 am
puzzle that we are still trying to figure out. thank you so much. thank you for having me my pleasure. alright 8 41. shall we talk a little weather with rosemary and find out when our soupy weather is going to say so long to the bay area. it's going to be a slow clearing day. good morning to both of you. we do have local towns along the coast inside the bay. patchy drizzle out there this morning and for the afternoon, we'll go with partly cloudy skies for inland cities. mostly cloudy along the coastline and we are going to introduce that monsoonal moisture once again later today and into the rest of the weekend . here's a look from ktvu across the oakland estuary. the fall along the coastline has improved some temperature. we're looking at visibility better at half moon bay from where we started and temperatures this morning, very similar to yesterday, upper fifties and santa rosa 64 in concord, 64. right now in san jose, a light onshore breeze has picked up through the delta this morning and now gusting about 25 mph, but all in all, just very subtle changes going on. for today. mostly cloudy for the
8:43 am
morning. partly cloudy for the afternoon. hard to see from this vantage point. but in addition, the low clouds and apache drizzle out there this morning. the mid and high level clouds are already beginning to spill in and will increase tonight into tomorrow. checking in on the visibility has dropped off once again at half moon bay. it was all the way up to about six miles. now the visibility along highway one in that section, down to half mile, once again and into the afternoon. for today, we'll go with mostly cloudy skies along the coast. partly cloudy inside the bay. sixties at the coast seventy's around the bay upper eighties expected inland. better details on these numbers, plus the extended forecast coming up. up next pack band, roadrunner pinball nintendo super system. those are just a few of the many arcade games available at today's california extreme arcade expo coming up. we're live there talking all about the games and how you can participate this weekend. but first another violent watch robbery in the bay area. details
8:46 am
we're trying to find those responsible for the latest robbery of an expensive watch in the bay area. push your looking at video of thursday's incident happened on skyline drive, and this was all recorded by a door security camera. you can see that armed robber pushing that victim against the truck demanding his watch the victim did resist, and then the robber pistol whipped him and eventually was able to grab that watch. and then you saw their hopped into that red oncoming car and took off. it was just like shocked that that happened here because this is a quiet, friendly neighborhood to the people down, up and down the street all day, so obviously
8:47 am
those people aren't aren't from around here because because, yeah. none of the people around would would do that. well some are suggesting that people just refrain from wearing expensive watches in public, but one resident told us that she thinks people should be able to wear whatever they want. they just need to be cautious, knowing that this is going on daly city police asking anyone with information about this robbery or that car as you can see there in the video to give them a call. and happening today california is honoring its fallen firefighters. the names of 82 men and women are going to be added to the states firefighters memorial in sacramento more than 1400 names are currently inscribed on that memorial wall, which pays tribute to firefighters who died on duty incidents or from job related illnesses. tonight is going to be the first in person ceremony since the pandemic started, and so it is going to honor firefighters who have died over the past three years. 11 of
8:48 am
the 82 firefighters being recognized are from the bay area. meanwhile firefighters continue to gain ground on that huge oak fire burning in the share in nevada foothills there. yosemite national park. cal fire says the oak fire as now burned more than 19,000 acres since it started eight days ago, but containment has grown at 52% up from 48% at this time yesterday. the huge fire has destroyed at least 63 buildings, including dozens of homes and mandatory evacuation orders do remain in effect for some 2200 people that live in mariposa county. take a look at this video it's shared by cal fire shows how ariel crews are working through the night slowed the spread of the flames from the oak fire. firefighters say this nighttime flying technology is just one of the tools helping them make progress on that oak fire. alright let's go now at 8 48 to rosemary oroczo. we talked about this cool saturday morning.
8:49 am
we're seeing outside depending on when you're waking up this morning, you might think, hmm. mm is this going to be the whole day or do we just have a couple of hours of this along the coast inside the bay? we have just seen that slow clearing cloud cover day after day today going to be the same temperature is about the same. the only subtle change. i won't say the only one but the perhaps the subtle change that we will notice is going to be some added humidity from the subtropical moisture that is going to be moving in this weekend. here's a live look from ktvu across the oakland estuary. the low clouds the fog drizzle out there this morning. earning and we've got little bit of moisture in addition to the mid and high level clouds already beginning to move in more so tonight and into tomorrow, but already seeing it out there as that monsoonal moisture pulls in from the desert southwest. if you're going to tahoe this weekend, keep an eye on the forecast. we could see thunderstorms. it looks like tomorrow into monday as well. here's a look at the future cast here. there's your lunch hour. mostly cloudy at the coast. partly cloudy inside the
8:50 am
bay mostly clear for inland cities. and then as we get into tonight notice those clouds coming in the south and from the east. that's the sub tropical moisture. the monsoonal moisture we're talking about. tomorrow morning. it's with us, so we have drizzle low mid and high level clouds to start your bay area sunday and then getting into the afternoon especially for the sierra. that risk of some thunderstorms. we may see it come in sunday night into monday as well, that's something that we'll see a little bit down the road. here's the temperatures right now. 58 in san francisco, 64 to start your day in concord and for the afternoon. very similar to where we were yesterday low sixties at the coast to upper eighties inland extended forecast. our temperatures don't change all the way through wednesday, but we will see that increase and chance of thunderstorms sunday into monday back to you. thanks, rosemary. it is so big day it's having its annual summer party today. we're gonna take a look. back at oakland's first black owned tv network and its rich history coming up from the south
