jackpots up for grabs over the next 48 hours. let's first talk about powerball. that jackpot sits at $401 million to get that you have to pick all five numbers and the bonus number. the odds of winning the jackpot are roughly one in 292.2 million. the drawing is tonight at eight pm and then you've got the mega millions prize, which is also very high, actually higher. it's now at $445 million ahead of tuesday's drawing. that means that cash option is about 226 million. so if someone wins that jackpot, lottery officials say it would be the 12th largest in the game's history. and that drawing is that tuesday night at eight o'clock, is it time to do a workplace pool? steve paulson. well you have to split it so many ways. i think we could do you think we can't share 226

4:19 am
their water temps kind of holding steady 58 59. 56 56 58 so not much change their fifties on the temps to a few sixties, but a lot of fifties here and with that low cloud deck moving in, almost everyone seems to be stuck here, although claims down to 51 1 creek 50 to a lot of mid fifties here, and that's probably going to be the lows 36 in truckee 44. south lake tahoe. some of that cloud cover 51 uk to 55 down in monterey. and you can see the hide there, but we don't get the strong offshore breeze. we have a little bit of a northerly breeze. but it's not that strong, really quiet pattern here. 50 60 seventies and eighties, maybe a little bump up on the temps on tuesday and wednesday. after that, it is about as quiet as quiet can be going into the end of the week clotting. okay. thanks, steve. why a month long occupation of an oakland school following its closure has reportedly ended coming up. why the people staying at parker elementary school say they're done. and we're still sharing stories celebrating hispanic heritage month and we're going to introduce you to a few local

news this morning's onto. and good morning to you. welcome back to mornings onto i'm claudine wong. and it is monday , october 10th. let's talk about our weather. some people will say lots of people. steve paulson disappointed yesterday, blue angels couldn't fly. our concern on friday is that sunday might be a little iffy with the fog bank, and that's exactly what happened. there's still a huge fog bank. they're a little low is dropping down. that's right over. it's generating a little bit of partly cloudy skies. so that low is on its way south. there's already one low down down offer like south of arizona. but there's one ride over us, and as it goes down, we might see a little bit of an offshore breeze. so maybe this fall will burn off a little sooner. but i would say a lot of low clouds and fog. partly sunny. partly cloudy. i kept temperatures a little bit on the cooler side here, so 60 seventies and eighties all right over to sound at 4 30 in the morning. how has everything their self? everything is pretty good. i'm looking at fog here, steve, you and i have been
4:31 am
talking about it. the fog is there on the golden gate, and it is not too low, but it's there. and if you see it on, sat down what i want as you come through the tunnel, it will be with you down to the toll plans that you look at that he speak commute. we're off to a nice start. i like what i see so far, so we're just going to leave it alone. as you know what i mean. 4 31, let's get back to the headlines. alright thanks sal and new this morning, russia launched a barrage of missiles against civilian targets and ukrainian cities, including the capital of kiev, least eight people were killed. a ukrainian commander says russia fired 75 missiles while ukrainian defenses intercept 41 of those missiles, nearly three dozen hit their targets. these are the first strikes on kevin four months in response to those attacks. rush uh, ukrainian president america , zielinski said. quote russia is trying to destroy us and wipe us off the face of the earth. and just a short while ago, russian president vladimir putin said the russian strikes on kiev come in response to what he

called ukrainians. terrorist actions, including an attack on a bridge to crimea. that bridge is a key supply route for russian troops fighting in the south of ukraine. the explosion caused a partial collapse of the bridge, killing three people. no one has claimed responsibility for damaging that 12 mile long bridge, which is the longest in europe. and we're getting a look at some of the areas of ukraine that have been recaptured from russia by ukrainian troops in one town, a government building that had been occupied by russian troops still has russian flags inside and outside of that building fruits. sitting on a desk is an indication of how quickly russian troops left when the ukrainian counter offensive began. ukrainian troops talked about the destruction left behind. can you don't think humans act like this? you have to be totally sick to do this to a country. as ukrainian troops entered newly liberated areas. they are warmly welcomed by the people living there after months of living under russian occupation. and san jose police are searching for a driver involved in a deadly hit and run

breeze, but there's just nothing going on. santa rosa is a south wind napa as a northwest fairfield west southwest. what about from sfl out a little more northwest west northwest, so really, not much of a northeast breeze or unless you're in the higher elevations, and there's a little one. so this is a lot of low clouds and fog. it has to be knocked out of here, and i don't know if it's going to happen here. half mile visibility. santa rosa pedaling with three quarters nevado three quarters, half moon bay three miles napa airport, a mile and a quarter san martin, santa clara valley. watson ville little better down towards monterey and selena's, but we still have some areas of fog and a solid fog bank out there, so mix of sun and clouds after that low cloud deck burns off if we get enough of an east wind or northeast breeze, then yeah, more sunshine. fifties on the water temps now, except for the one monterrey outer buoy. they've all dropped into the upper fifties and our mid fifties. except for a few almost every locations in the low to mid fifties here because we're stuck because the low cloud deck 55 pillar. 550.56 montara beach , 56. belmont san mateo is in

is now ramping up as storm after storm batters. the caribbean hurricane julia made landfall in nicaragua this weekend as a category one storm. it first swept over colombia's senate dress island, knocking down trees and tearing off roofs. so far, no reports of deaths tied to that storm. the situation is much worse in venezuela, where heavy rain from a separate system has killed at least 22 people. the rain triggered a landslide in the northern part of the country. emergency managers say people in the area had just seconds to get to safety as debris swept down a mountainside. they believe dozens of neighborhoods have been destroyed and 52 people. are still missing. and back in florida. it's been more than a week after hurricane ian made landfall. some victims are just getting a firsthand look at what's left of their homes. reporter nate boy shows us how

they're working, too slowly recover. cots lined the floor of hurt serena in southwest florida over 500 people are still sheltering there. more than a week after hurricane in the recovery effort just beginning in florida's barrier islands, those faced with rebuilding or just trying to take things one day at a time. it's like a death of a loved one, you know, just like the pain just comes and goes in island volunteers are handing out supplies like food and water. the island's publix grocery store reopened with generator power more quickly than most expected, but it will take a very long time until things return to normal. they're talking about some of the insurance companies, for example , perhaps going under there, unable to pay for all the damages that they're responsible to pay for sanibel island completely devastated by ian storm surge. people who made it out are grateful they're alive. devastating is when you lose a child. devastating is when you lose your spouse. in the next ident. uh, we're fine. in

addition to the property damage is the emotional toll floridians who rode out the storm and are now dealing with the aftermath say it will live with them as a traumatic event every time i hear the wind blow and a piece of a wind shift yeah. your ptsd officials attribute over 100 deaths to ian, which makes it one of the deadliest storms to ever hit the u. s reporting in fort myers, florida native oy fox news. in fort myers, florida, there is a growing memorial in honor of those who died. people are leaving flowers , cards, notes and wooden crosses, and each cross carries the name of a person, or pat who died from the storm. 53 people in lee county were killed during that storm. in total, there are at least 106 deaths from the hurricane. it's been five years since the series of wildfires

rampaged across the north bay tubbs fire destroyed entire neighborhoods, including coffee park in santa rosa. and people who lost those homes came back to thank first responders. they also used the time to remember what they lost well, taking in just how far they've come. danielle brian remembers waking up in the middle of the night to the horse smell of smoke and the sound of howling winds that were driving that fire. there was just a sense of doom. and i've never had. i don't think i've ever experienced that feeling before. there's something very special about this neighborhood . everybody just bending together and communicating. that also was you know, incentive and drove us all closer. bryant says it took her about 2.5 years to rebuild, but the wait was worth it. now she and her neighbors are working to build new and happier members. and cal fire's annual fire prevention week kicked off with a message about how to prepare for a house fire
4:49 am
. the agency says. there are two critical factors in preparing for a fire properly installed smoke alarms and advanced planning. smoke. alarms should be checked once a month, and residents should rehearse their fire escape plan at least twice a year. a recent report from the national fire protection association found that us home fire deaths were at a 14 year high last year. fire prevention week runs through next sunday. a new type of helmet outfitted with artificial intelligence, thermal cameras and radar is helping firefighters see through dense smoke. the thermal cameras are able to pierce through the thick smoke as artificial intelligence picks up the presence of potential victims cruise in scotland are currently testing them. doesn't affect any performance, very lightweight in terms of the equipment to have this integrated within either advise a lot of helmet would be a massive advantage. the technology is currently mounted
4:50 am
on top of a standard firefighter helmet and in the future, researchers are hoping to build the technology right inside of the helmet. alright your time now for 49 on this monday morning, let's talk to steve paulson about how this week is shaping up. steve hi, claudine. that much here going on. there's a little system dropping over us right now. so we do have another big big fog bank and some partly cloudy skies. this has triggered a little activity up in the mountains. you can see that moving south and north is that low drops in even a little bit of development here about san francisco south. so some partly cloudy zoos and there's just not much of a breeze. right now there is in the hills of the little northerly breeze, but it's generally less than about 15 20 mph. and right now there's not much of an offshore breeze here. half moon basin has northeast but calm. so visibility is an issue here for nevado, petaluma, santa rosa napa airport, maybe half moon bay and then the santa clara valley for sure, they're san martin. half a mile visibility watson ville mile and a half little better towards salinas
4:51 am
and monterey, so of solid fog bank mix of sun and clouds today. cool coast nice inland. yeah some of the forecast models are projecting pretty strong offshore breeze. what i've seen some operators to nineties. but, boy, i'll tell you better develop soon fifties on a lot of the town's water tips have come down a little bit. stuck almost low fifties mid fifties few upper fifties but i don't think these will change all that much of forties in the santa cruz mountains, boulder creek, scotts valley in their mid fifties around socal, santa cruz, a little cooler. morgan hill, san martin. mid upper fifties around campbell, santa clara, cupertino and saratoga 34 44 truck in south lake tahoe fifties for you kaya crescent city, sacramento, monterey down to santa maria and seventies on the desert now flagstaff a brisk 37 so that the lowest dropping down over us and that's going to be with us today and as it drops south if it's strong enough and holds its form there might give us a little offshore breeze, but 60 seventies and eighties on the temps. there's just a lot of low clouds and fog really maybe a little warmer for a couple of days, and it looks quieter and
4:52 am
cooler by the end of the week. putting their bodies in front of batons, live ammunition. they're risking arrest, but there's no turning back now for them. more protests in iran and right here in the bay area following the death of a young woman at the hands of authorities what people demonstrated in san francisco are calling for the other side of the world. and california's rising gas prices may have finally taking a breather what the oil companies are saying about the increasing prices at the pump and what governor newsom is pledging to do about it. but first for me. it was a slap in the face. we watch this industry legalized from the t v screens. a local cannabis activists as president biden's pardons for marijuana possession does not go far enough. why she wants to see the white house so even further.

looks like there's too much fog and low clouds. but this low you can see some of the cloud cover the sierra. and a little bit over, especially about san francisco south, so we start off with a lot of gray here monday. fog bank and some partly cloudy is up above clouds. fog partly cloudy i went cool to mild maybe too warm here, but i'm undercutting a lot of the forecast size 60 seventies and some aliens. alright cells here we made it through the first hour. alright or something new. we're good so far. steve and some people do. some schools are closed today for a holiday so we might get a little bit of a break. let's go out and take a look. look at the golden gate bridge. it's a little foggy there and when we moved from there to the east bay, we don't see a lot going on. as a matter of fact, the one to check in with the bay bridge toll plaza, and it's still very light one. let's get back to the headlines. alright, thanks, sal will investigators in san francisco are now trying to determine the cause of fire that burned three homes in the city's silver terrorist neighborhood. they started shortly after 6 30 yesterday evening on pollux avenue near interstate 2 80.

pumpkin growers from across the country are gathering in half moon bay on this monday morning , and they're bringing with them their king size pumpkins to the 49th annual world championship. pumpkin weigh off ktvu james taurus joining us now live from half moon bay, where the competition is going to start later this morning. this is always a really fun tradition, james it sure is. cloudy and this is the city of pumpkins. if you're driving into half moon bay, you see not just pumpkins all over the place, but signs telling you all about the pumpkin festival that's set to happen this weekend. and, of course, the pumpkin weigh off that set to happen in just a few hours here. some of these guys who are competing in the competition today. well, they're showing up and getting things started. you see the tarp over some of these pumpkins right now. it's a little misty at the moment. you gotta protect them before the official way off begins. a little later at around seven o'clock. most of these pumpkins that are here already there likely heavier than £1000 . but those top contenders usually need to record a way of at least a ton to have a chance at winning, and that means a
5:08 am
whole lot of cash, considering you get $9 a pound. if you win, i'll show you a little bit of what the competition is look like in past years and 2021 that was the first pumpkin weigh off since the beginning of the pandemic. the event is one of several all week long leading up to the 50th annual art and pumpkin festival in half moon bay. that's set to happen this weekend, and that will be the first time in about three years of, of course, because of the covid 19 pandemic. people come from all over the country to compete. we've got some guys from napa here. we just had a man drive in from minnesota as well. but we hear some people coming in from places like oregon and washington from all over the region, really. last year. the winner came from olympia, washington, jeff almiron took home that title, earning himself more than $20,000 in prize money that pumpkin he had way more than £2000 2190 pounds to be exact. now there's some talk that some competing this morning may have a world record breaking pumpkin coming to the competition. in fact, that guy we just saw pull in with the trailer here. let's
5:09 am
see if we can show that over keith. we see that black truck with the black tarp that's supposed to be the one that everyone is keeping their eyes on this morning, so we'll let you know once that starts getting weighed in what happens, but for that to happen in order to break that world record that pumpkin will need to weigh more than £2700 of you have no idea how much that weighs. that's about the weight of a four door midsize sedan. that's around £3000. so this pumpkin has to be as big and as heavy as a car to make sure it actually breaks the world record. so of course, we'll let you know what goes on around here. this is going to be something. we're keeping our eyes on all morning long and plenty of pumpkins will be out here bigger than i think we've ever would have imagined before. for now. we live this morning in half moon bay. i'm james torres. let's send it back to you. a spectacular sight it is it's always fun and really shocking. how big those pumpkins can be alright. thanks, james. we'll check in with you in just a little bit. it's fun to see and i think for them, it's always a question too of how much it is going to wear. you know what i mean? they take such good care
5:10 am
of them, and they have to be so careful in the transport. it's like they're babies, right? steve paulson. i'm lucky if i get a squash to grow this big pumpkins at safeway. there you go. i said, i guess it's that time of year. same here. i said, what's that time? alright it's also that time of year when usually i'm not talking about fog, but that's what we have. we have a big fog bank and even some partly cloudy skies here, a little lowest dropping over us. supposedly it's going to generate a little bit of an offshore breeze. but at the surface, it's not happening up in the mountains, though it could be a few little splash and dash little guy showers there. sounds like towel looks to be from about tahoe over towards that reno maybe carson city, but just a little bit of activity that low drops in on us, northwest, north south northwest west southwest. i mean, there's no predominantly eastern northeast breeze. at least not right now. there is a little northerly breeze up in the hills and even livermore as a west wind. hayward has a west wind. and visibility. little better for nevada, now half mile santa rosa petaluma, three quarters, napa airports gone up, so even half moon bay has gone up a little bit so not too bad, but
5:11 am
san martin was half mile not three quarters. watson ville too much better towards monterey and also selena. so pretty good fog bank out there. mix of sun and clouds middle start to drift south throughout the day as that little starts to head towards central california. but we're not widespread low clouds and fog fifties on the temps mid upper on most of these water temps here they you know, kind of been stuck there for a couple of days. almost everyone says cloudy almost every except conquered, of course, buchanan, but everyone else's st cloud at least on the observations of few forties san anselmo wanted fairfax. a lot of load of mid fifties even middletown's 49 but sonoma 50 degrees 51 so basketball rohnert park marshall 51 point raised 51 so little cool for some a lot of low clouds and fog. that's the aforementioned low. it's really over us right now. it's on its way down to kind of join up with that system in northern mexico bar, and as it does, it could generate a little northerly breeze. but i'll tell you there's not much there now. 60 seventies eighties on the temps a little warmer. maybe today tomorrow, then, just for this

5:19 am
showers up there. your garden variety in the mountains, improving visibility here gradually, so maybe the bases are lifting a little bit is that low is moving over us still a half mile sonoma county airport pedal assist three quarters after that, it's better than it was even an hour ago. even san martin was down to a half now three quarters. watson ville, too, so still some areas of fog, but it's a solid fog bank next to sun and clouds today if we get a little east wind or north wind, it's not at the surface, though, and temps will bump up after a very cool sunday with a lot of fifties and sixties yesterday and seventy's fifty's on most of the attempts now, even out towards the east bay temps clayton is 51 walnut creek, says 52. then it's mid fifties for just about everyone. take your pick. few upper fifties but really temperature seem to be stuck due to the amount of cloud cover overs little old dropping over. it's going to head down and join up with this system right down there, and if we can get that high to give us a little offshore breezes will get rid of this local cloud deck. but at the surface, it's just not there. in the higher elevations. there is a little bit of a northerly breeze, but i can't find one much at the surface. 60
