as another round of bigger storms is expected to hit the bay area this week. plus the new year brought new laws here in california. we're gonna break down what to expect for 2023. instead. exception. cisco 49ers. san francisco 49ers beaten their old time rivals las vegas raiders in overtime. what a game that was what they need to do to lock up a bye week to get the rest needed for the playoffs as they push to keep this winning streak alive. from ktvu. fox two news this morning's onto and good morning to you. welcome to mornings onto i'm claudine wong. good morning. i'm dave clark. it's a monday january 2nd 2023 od to see you. good to seet you, too happy new year to you can't delay steve paulson, steve ! steve you never hear what i'm
7:01 am
saying. i'm out of here, but i know what's coming in. claudine hello. hello happy new year. what to start any any thought that one of steve's rule of thumb? it's all or nothing? yes yes. what it's all right now. yeah forties on the temps here with cloud cover is already in rain will make it later. this is not our big system. this is just a normal one. get us probably about 1/10 of an inch to maybe over a half inch of rain. most of the morning should be okay, although it's not far away this system so it wouldn't take much . i think a seagull flapping its wings could provide enough dynamics to get a little bit of light rain going, but this is mainly for the afternoon, january rain and maybe a lot is the way it's looking here. cloudy skies cool rain later, more light to steady but some half inch amounts in north bay and also santa cruz mountains are possible. forties and fifties on the temps. alright salles here and he's going to talk about nothing. i hope not. not a lot. the east bay is off to a very good start, and today is not a traditional commute
7:02 am
day. a lot of people do have the day off. let's go to highway four. you can see highway four is going to be okay. coming over the mountain. he ordered the mountain over the hill into concord bay bridge is light. i think this all changes tomorrow as many schools are back in this week in the east bay. and other places, so we'll see what happens. but today i think we're going to have a decent day 702 let's get back to the headlines. okay thanks. sal castaneda still shut down after part of it collapsed during the heavy rain is james tor is live for us in castro valley this morning to show us the damage and which areas we should be avoiding james. we're standing right at the intersection of a street and sixth street this morning here in castro valley. this road closure extends over to ruby street. it's not too much of an extension here, but you can see exactly why a little bit of the road here actually good chunk of the road. and pretty much the entire part of a bike lane here. all taken down collapsed into the creek below. you see a
7:03 am
lamppost that's hovering above it as well. the westbound lane of this stretch is closed here, and we've already seen it several times this morning. there are people who are driving around barricades in mind. there are barricades on the other side of where we're standing. there are notifying drivers that you can't get through here. people driving around here driving the wrong way onto the eastbound lane and coming very close to some head on collisions this morning. thankfully we haven't actually seen that happen just yet. but we've gotten very close here. just very clear reminder. the westbound lanes westbound traffic through this area is not open at this time. the roadway here washed away in storms over the weekend, collapsing into the san lorenzo creek. this is likely a busy road. it's a straight shot from interstate 5 82 8 80. it's a connector road. if you're headed to hayward or toward the peninsula through the san mateo bridge. there also houses on the other side of the creek and that heavy rain. those floods also took down some of those backyards as well. whole create kind of overflow everything in our backyard god
7:04 am
filled with water. lot of trees breakdown. we lost it on 50 bamboos as well. one homeowner. we spoke to show us some video of the creek flooding feet above normal levels. they tell us they worry what this area might look like after another round of storms later this week. castro valley doesn't have its own municipal government, so the responsibility for fixing the road will fall under alameda county. and while we wait for our next bit of rain, the county does offer up have to free four free sandbags for anyone who lives in the area. they will be at the two fire stations to alameda county fire stations here in castro valley, and those are fire stations. 25. and fire station six. we're live this morning in castro valley. i'm james torres, ktvu fox two news , james. thank you. time 704. every bay area county has storm damage right now. over in berkeley. the storm knocked down trees, including this one on claremont avenue that blocked
7:05 am
the street and power lines. rosel knockdown, leaving nearby homes with no power for hours and over in san francisco, a huge boulder rolled down a hillside near the randall museum. it's impressive, very impressive. the size of the boulder is amazing. had rolling rock stopped before it hit the rocky mountain nursery school playground and the swing set there were not damaged, but there is a lot to clean up before it's safe again for kids to play their director, always worried that a mudslide was possible, but never expected something like this. rec and park was just here. the week before break pruning these trees. ah so i think nobody had an idea. but i think no one thought we were going to get almost 5.5 inches of rain in 24 hours. and all around the bay area freeways were affected by all of the rain, many on ramps and exits blocked recovered by standing water. caltrans wants
7:06 am
to clear all the damages fast as possible, and by late today they hope to have all freeways accessible again. the oakland zoo will be closed for at least the next two weeks due to the damage caused by the weekend storm. a giant single opened up near the entrance on golf links road during yesterday's heavy or saturday. rather heavy rainfall creek runs through part of the zoo's property and water tunnel underneath the road was overwhelmed during the big storm. the incredible speed and volume of the water, uh, literally collapsed some of the culvert itself and then resulted in the collapse of the asphalt over it. the people who run the zoo say they understand why many people are disappointed by the closure, but they say safety has to be their top priority, especially with more heavy rain on the way again. most importantly, the animals are safe, but we've now got to assess the property damage cleanup. there's mud, you know,
7:07 am
on the pathways and in the parking lot, so it's been pretty extreme. the sinkhole did not cause any injuries to the people or the animals at the zoo time now, 706 with a big storm this weekend forced a homeless encampment and san jose to be evacuated. ktvu viewer sent us this video from saturday the storm water is rushing into the cabinet in the 1000 oaks area of south san jose san homeless advocates say all of that rain literally washed out the camp. people are freezing their wind flaps and there are there, rain flaps and their tarps are being blown off, so everything inside their tents are getting flooded. um they are literally getting flooded out. the creeks are rising up homeless. i have the kids are trying to get the people living in that homeless encampment into nearby warming centers at both city and county leaders, one of her biden more shelters in the san jose area. during all the stormy weather, we're getting and as we get
7:08 am
ready for even more rainy weather later this week, you can stay up to date on the latest impact from the storm or what's happening with the cleanup by going to our website ktvu .com. report says to end homelessness and sir francisco within three years would require adding more than 6000 homes and spending an additional $1.4 billion. the report from san francisco's homelessness department also says ending homelessness within three years is probably impossible because of the cost and the lack of land and buildings to provide the 6000 additional housing units that are needed. alright claudine. thank you time now 708 with the 49ers have improved their playoff position. they're celebrating what could be their most exciting win of the season and they came against their old rivals in the game that used to be called the barrel of the bay and the 49ers came from behind. they beat the raiders of las vegas 37 34 in las vegas kicker
7:09 am
robbie gold kicked the winning field goal in overtime after missing a field goal just minutes earlier at the end of regulation play. it was a 49ers ninth straight win at quarterback brock purdy was ridiculous. he became the first rookie nfl quarterback to win this first four starts since 2004. he's only 23. and he continues to amaze his teammates. that was fantastic. i mean, um he's gonna come up here and he'll tell you he missed a couple throws. he did this. he did that. but at the end of the day, brock played at a high enough level for us to win. he made throws he needed to make him and i you were clicking the entire fourth quarter o t. i was fantastic. it was broad, pretty cool. he kept his cool during that very tense, seesaw battle against raiders, but he says it was 18 victory, and he says he's getting ready for the playoffs. for what's to come. i feel like that was great in terms of prepping our offense, defense special teams just the whole

unit as a whole. um it was great . just prepping prepping us and getting us right for what's what's about to come. 49ers moved up to the number two seed with that victory and with the loss by the minnesota by kings, they could become the top seed if they beat the arizona cardinals sunday and the philadelphia eagles lose to the new york giants. well one new law for the new year here in california cracks down on side shows and attempts to take over the streets. what's called ryan's law says a driver can be charged with manslaughter if someone dies because of a sideshow or street racing. and the law is named after ryan couple, a 16 year old, who was hit by a speeding driver. advocates are hoping that this felony charge will prevent deadly incidents like that. we're hoping that once this law is enacted, and people see the types of penalties that their friends or associates are getting, because there are still engaging in these activities, it's going to prevent others
7:11 am
from attempting to do this. now another new law will protect women who get an abortion or end a pregnancy from being prosecuted and one that people are already seeing an impact from job postings in california are now required. to include salary information if there are more than 15 employees in the company. california has been one of the leaders in the country trying to enforce the kinds of mechanisms that make equality equity across the playing field . whether we're talking about wages, serving on boards, etcetera, and what this law intends to do is bring us closer to equity and clarity in terms of what people get paid. so the law has now taken effect and job postings are required to include that new salary information, but keep in mind. it could take a few days for companies to update all their postings. claudine time now. 7 11. dozens of people in florida trapped on new year's eve after the power goes out on a ferris wheels coming up the investigation underway at the

7:21 am
about two weeks out. 227 inches on rainfall possible from the wednesday system wrongs, strong winds, so flood concerns power outages. dangerous traveler would not take much now after what happened on saturday system coming in today is splitting a little bit, but it's still going to give us some rain. not a lot, but the moisture content is what we call very deep, alright, very deep, and it's being funneled into here and the air is saturated. so the projection here now what's interesting about this is that the forecast miles have been doing i've been doing this dance. heaviest rains will be you know, golden gate san pablo bay north. what happened? what happened on saturday? just the exact opposite is what happened on saturday. heavy rain was san francisco, oakland, danville. that was the line and also in the santa cruz mountains. but all the projections are really, really heavy north of about marin county going over the next about 16 days. there will be some snow in the mountains out of this system for 27. there
7:22 am
will be a lot more than that. maybe two ft. plus by the time we get to wednesday night thursday, now again, this is just one forecast models projection, but between now and next monday it is showing eight and three quarters inches. arrange for santa rosa and 10.5 for you, kaya, the old rule of thumb if santa rosa gets eight. that would be 16 in the russian river. approximately so you know again, we'll see. it doesn't mean these are right. some are not as wet. others are very wet, though. thirties and forties on the temps, and we will get a lot of cloud cover here, with some rain, developing not elaborate a little bit developing later this afternoon into tonight. the moisture train goes all the way across the pacific and unless the jetstream or there's some buckling of that jet stream, this is what's called a zonal flow. it's called west to east, but then when you get these strong lows that form right there, then they just funnel this moisture directly into us. that's what we're dealing with here. i think nonstop here, probably for a while. forties fifties on the highs so cloudy

been reporting, including some of the big bay area tech companies, the former director of the state's employment development department says california has created 675,000 new jobs since november 2021, he says. a lot of that is because people are starting their own businesses. however he also warns higher interest rates and inflation could hurt workers, especially low income workers, who are already losing buying power to inflation. still a big gap, even with these wage increases between minimum and higher wage jobs in california and the lower wage workforces. then california still doing better than many other places, and economists say we are likely to see a soft economic downturn , even if other states experience a hard recession. elon musk, no longer the world's richest person. the tesla founder and billionaire saw his net worth plummet in 2022. forbes magazine reports, musk's network dropped more than $100 billion last year. leaving his

to funnel in this moisture right there. this low is going to funnel in all that moisture over us and the beat goes on. i mean, i mean, it just keeps going and look at that and keeps going and going. so that's what we're dealing with here for at least 7 to 10 days system coming in tonight is more of a good old fashioned one here will get some rain out of it. 10th of an inch to maybe upwards of a half three quarters of an inch, maybe russian river mount tamil pious santa cruz mountains half inch to three quarters. there will be some snow for the monday night tuesday system in the sierra 4 to 7 being forecast, but multiple feet is being forecast for the wednesday night into thursday system. this is just one forecast model. it is already ramped up totals the seven day outlook for santa rose is now nine and a quarter inches of rain. for san jose. it is six for san francisco five and three quarters. we'll see if it's right. there are other forecast models are are not as wet, but some of them are really now starting to trend more bullish forties on the on the temperatures few thirties but a lot of forties here so cloudy some rain today into tonight,
