philando castile worked. he was shot and killed during a traffic stop in july. dan scheneman tells us - the officer who shot a handful of demonstrators gathered hours after learning the offcier who fatally shot philando castile will face charges. castile was killed facebook...sparked outrage. "please don't tell me he's dead." officer jeronimo yanez, who fired the fatal shots, now faces a second degree manslaughter charge and two counts of dangerously discharging a firearm. castile had a permit to carry a gun and warned the officer he was armed. officer yanez said he thought castile was reaching for the firearm. ramsey county's attorney said castile was calm and did what the officer told him to do. "it is my conclusion that the use of deadly force by officer yanez shootings this year, sparked protests...some of them violent.

"i don't want this publicity i don't want this fame i want justice." an attorney for the castile family said they hope the charges are the start of something bigger. "we see this as a stake in the ground and we are intending for this case to send a loud message." one case that could send ripples acr dan scheneman nbc news. if convicted -- the officer could face up to ten years in prison. the prosecution has rested its case in the trial of michael slager. he's the former south carolina police officer charged with murder in last year's shooting death of walter scott.

malice by shooting scott in the back during a chase. his attorneys argue there was no malice -- saying he had little time to make a decision. slager faces between 30 years and life in prison if convicted of murder. the trial is expected to continue today for a man accused of murdering his girlfriend. eddie hicks is charged with murder. police say he stabbed kahdyesha lemon more than 100 times at her dubuque home last year. according to our coverage partners at the dubuque telegraph herald -- members of his family said in murder. continuing coverage -- more questions as people living in an assisted living home are scrambling to find a new place to live. starting next month -- 60 people living at a facility in des facility that does... or hire private in-home care. it turns out -- the company that owns the home was also caught off guard. they say brightstar care in ankeny would not be renewing the

"we didn't want to change. you didn't want to change from bright star? no we wanted to remain assisted living" "we went to other vendors to come in and take over and it was and this could be why the contract wasn't renewed. brightstar offices were unlocked.. but empty yesterday afternoon. floor... and the phone showed 31- unanswered messages... some answers could come today. the company that owns the home has scheduled a meeting with residents this afternoon. a gas explosion kills a man and injures a dozen others. it happened in illinois. surveillance video shows store windows hit from the blast. witnesses say the explosion shook so much they thought something had crashed into their home. "i was drying my dishes and i felt the boom and i felt it so hard to post pushed me against

and the search for victims continued late into the night. firefighters are battling wildfires across the southeast. six states are affected. as reid binion tells us -- the fires are impacting air quality and unusually dry conditions are causing health concerns for communities in the southeast. upwards of 30 large satellite images from nasa. tennessee... where it's landed more than 200 people in the carefully planning their battle against the flames... taking the abnormally dry conditions into consideration. "what we don't want is to put efforts to extinguish the fires -- hampered by a looking for is to have, again, the done before the wind hits." some residents close to the fires are refusing to evacuate.

"the thought of losing everything you own is never a fun thing." i'm reid binion reporting. things like campfires, smoking cigarettes, even parking a car off the road - worried something could catch fire. a court order tries to put up the stop sign -- to keep the iowa dot from giving tickets. some people are trying to capitalize on a ruling last month in which a polk county judge said the dot does not have the authority to enforce most moving violations. they want a judge to order the agency to stop giving tickets. the iowa d-o-t says they plan to fight it.

the road. this accident serving as a reminder to try not to avoid them. this is the time you're more likely to see deer on the road. they tend to come out more frequently at dawn or dusk. they're bound to be near wooded areas or waterways. if you see a deer on the road, here's your breaks firmly, steer through the collision, and then safely get yourself off the highway, either driving onto the median, or clear to the side on the left." to not swerve on city roads, either, as it may cause a bigger accident than just hitting the deer itself. a cross country runner is recovering after being hit by a deer during a race. it happened over the weekend in pennsylvania. he managed to get up and finish the race with the help of two of his teammates. his coach says he's doing okay -- he's just a little sore.

president. today he heads to captiol hill. pence will join a meeting of the house g-o-p conference. in the afternoon he's expected to meet with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. the vice president-elect also plans to get together with democratic leaders chuck schumer of the senate and nancy pelosi of the house. former democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton makes her first public appearance since giving a speech conceding the morning after the election. the children's defense fund honored clinton for her dedication and contributions to child an eastern iowa restaurant owner says he's getting threats for allegedly forcing a cover charge depending on who you voted for. it happened at stella in iowa city on saturday. customers were charged five- dollars if they voted for hillary clinton and ten- dollars if they the owner says the different prices were meant in fun. politics which i enjoy." the restaurant says they have pulled down their facebook page because of threats they're received. federal reserve chair janet yellen is heading to capitol -- to give lawmakers an update on the economy. she'll testify in fron of a committee made up of members of both parties from the house and senate. at last year's hearing she said she expected the job market and overall economy would continue to improve. a foster child grows up to help recognizing a problem... the eastern iowa woman decided to do something about it. kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in waterloo... you can tell us about kaden's kloset a foster kid herself... kristle davis grew up to become a foster parent in grundy county... that's when baby kaden showed up at her door without much warning.... and kristal wasn't prepared... she realized too many foster kids

so she started kaden's kloset... an organization in iowa that donates new or gently used clothes to foster and adoptive families.. the organization started in holland last spring... and now there's "restore dignity" "i remember going to school day in and day out, and just not having really anything, and going home to home.. it wasn't lies. all the clothes and supplies in kaden's kloset are donated by people in the community... last month... a new kadens kloset location opened up here at trinity lutheran in waterloo... kristle says she's hoping to start up more in areas like marshaltown

continuing coverage this morning: bail denied for a man accused of killing a toddler. kyrian knox's body was found in a park lagoon in chicago last year. his mother left the two-year-old with kamel harris as she moved from cedar rapids to chicago. police believe the child was lactose intolerant and cried for an entire afternoon after having milk. investigators think harris snapped. they found the boy's blood in harris' car and arrested him. there's nothing he can do. there's no turning, e from it anymore. no more running, he can't run anymore. no more lies. man up and tell the truth. harris is not married to -- or dating -- the boy's mother. he's a friend of a friend. he's now charged with murder. funeral services are held for a woman killed in a crash. the crash happened this month on highway 57 near downtown cedar falls. cynthia brooks was killed.

"i can't have any hate in my heart because i just knew how he felt ..i don't know what was happening but i can't carry that on my shoulders because i have to be strong." police say charles climbed a fence, trying to jump into the it takes six hours, but a man is ok -- rescued from a chimney. here's a look at the pictures from southeast iowa. this is in grandview -- in louisa county. an employee was trapped inside an industrial chimney at a midamerican energy plant. rescue crews climbed skywalks and used ropes to lower him down. one firefighter was hurt -- but should be ok. three people are in the hospital after a food truck burns on a college campus. it happened at george washington university. three employees were burned. the

bus. no word yet on what started the fire. colder weather is coming very soon. we know that. some people who are homeless have been using abandoned buildings in waterloo to stay warm. those buildings can be unsafe. last week, a fire started in an old apartment complex on commercial street. a man was rescued from a second story window. he was arrested for trespassing after being pulled from the burning building. another fire happened this week in waterloo -- thio no one lives in that house -- but investigators believe someone who's homeless might have been in the home. kwwl's elizabeth amanieh is asking why some of those in need are not turning to shelters. abandoned building used to be his only place to stay. but after he was rescued from a fire here-he was again. i'm on different medications, i was just in the hospital last week, and i got to go back again." choosing to seek out secluded abandoned buildings instead of shelters in the area. "staying at shelters like this one is an option, but the people here say it's a two-way street, you have to be willing to work the salvation army is one resources - offering both womens and mens shelters. have to. they're pretty basic, be nice to others, do your chores. obey quiet times, and follow your care plans, but we do have rules in place and sometimes we just don't care for that." with short term housing for those who need immediate emergency shelter, and also long term transitional housing-a six to eight week program to help them get back on their feet. but for both bruce and mulder-they say they've chosen to not seek help. up here at trinity lutheran in waterloo last month... all the items in these klosets are donated by people in the gilbert... news 7 kwwl. the 100 plus men and women who care group just donated around 19 hundred since starting last spring -- kaden's kloset has opened eight locations in iowa -- and is still growing. an iowa native is on the verge of space history today. peggy whitson is about to become the oldest woman in space. she'll be 56 when she rockets off the planet today. she's on her way to the international space station -- where she'll turn 57 in february. this will be her third space station miss when she's away from home...
