This is the full 5-12-2019 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
On the last episode of Labor Express Radio, I predicted that May Day 2019 might turn out to be the most exciting May Day in Chicago since the mega-marches of 2006. And that prediction turned out to be accurate. As forecast, 5 charter schools went out on strike that day across the city. They were joined by the clerical workers at the Chicago City Colleges, members of the Federation of College Clerical and Technical Personnel (IFT Local 1708) who also strike on May 1st. All of those strikes were ultimately victorious. The clerical workers won a tentative agreement after working without a contract for 3 years after just one day on strike. The charter school teachers strikes did not take much longer. Several charter operators settled within days, and Instituto, which held out the longest finally agreed to the striker's demands on May 7th. We will hear on tonight’s program about what was won in the charter school strikes and the overall context of the fight for quality public schools in which that those strikes took place.
