This is the full 9-18-2016 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
On tonight’s episode of Labor Express Radio, two major events are fast approaching. This first is the likelihood of a Chicago Teachers Strike sometime in the next couple months. We will hear from CTU organizing director Norine Gutekanst about why a strike might be necessary and how the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) is preparing its members for a strike, including participating in a national day of action in defense of public education on October 6th.
We are also now just 51 days from election day 2016. One thing that is increasingly clear from recent polls is the high level of dissatisfaction among voters with their choices in the presidential race. Both major parties have put forward candidates with historically low approval ratings. So it seems this year is ripe for independent third party challenges. Two states to our East, in Michigan, a group of union activists have seized on this opportunity by launching, the very straightforwardly named Working Class Party. We will hear from party organizer and candidate Mary Anne Herring in the second half of our program.
