who knew? a vicious brawl and post-knockout taunting to go with it. it's the coolest game on ice, you know. that clip later in sports. first, let's get to the news. live at 5:30 a.m. here at 30 rock in new york city. president obama holding a state dinner for the president of south korea last night at the white house. both leaders praising an agreement passed by congress that would open trade between the two countries. the president called it a win for both nations, saying the deal would increase u.s. exports by $11 billion and create 70,000 jobs. while president lee says the deal is going to create a lot of good, decent jobs for the people of america. earlier in the day, senate republicans made their counter offer proposal to president obama's jobs plan, the one voted down in the senate two days ago, calling on the president to enter negotiations and reconcile their plan with parts of his bill. house speaker john boehner spoke to reporters about the president's plan and about the need for compromise. >> i think there are parts of the president's plan where we

can, in fact, find common ground. we'll continue to work with him. i think that we've had our plan out there for months. i would hope the president would give us the same consideration that we're giving to those parts of his plan that we agree with. >> president obama says he's not going to wait around for republicans to start creating jobs. >> i asked you guys to show us the republican jobs plan that independent economists would indicate would actually put people back to work. i haven't yet seen it. and so eventually i'm hoping that they actually put forward some proposals that indicate that they feel that sense of urgency about people need -- need to put people back to work right now. >> speaker boehner clearly frustrated with the president's remarks hitting back hard in a private phone conversation with the president. according to the account which was released by the speaker's office yesterday, that's rare,

boehner, quote, respectfully challenged the president reportedly saying to obama, i want to make sure you have all the facts. boehner's office also says the speaker and the president have spoken about the republican jobs plan on several occasions and feels the president's characterization of their relationship and of republicans do nothing is unfair. turning to the 2012 republican presidential race, texas governor rick perry travels to pittsburgh today. set to give his first major policy address. the focus of the speech will be on energy and jobs, but the event may offer a chance to refocus. the presidential campaign.

opponents and our party so much of that i think they look at him because of his faith. he's the only true conservative. i truly feel like we are here for that purpose. >> mrs. perry saying god called governor perry to this race saying the husband was happy being governor but she encouraged him to run because she felt washington was lacking leadership. one of perry's rivals former godfather ceo continues his surge in the polls his signature economic plan is drawing increased scrutiny. the 999 proposal would reform the current tax code cutting it down to a 9% personal income tax, 9% corporate tax and 9% national sales tax. the plan is getting mixed reviews with "the washington post" offering this critique --

herman cain will sit down with david gregory on "meet the press" and he will join us later on "morning joe." many conservatives not pleased with the 999 plan which imposes a form of a vat tax. president obama ramping up the pressure against iran saying officials at the highest levels of the iranian government must be held accountable for the alleged plot to kill saudi arabia's ambassador to the united states here on american soil. in his first public statement on the matter the president promised the toughest possible sanctions on iran noting officials in tehran had direct links, he says, to the operation. >> this is part of a pattern of dangerous and reckless behavior by the iranian government. we don't take any options off the table in terms of how we operate with iran. but what you can expect is that we will continue to apply the

sorts of pressure that will have a direct impact on the iranian government until it makes a better choice in terms of how it's going to interact with the rest of the international community. >> the questions will continue as many skeptics doubt that the very highest levels of iranian government were involved in this, but the president saying yesterday they have multiple sources that confirm it did. this all comes as the u.s. officials confirm the obama administration had direct contact with iran over the allegations in this plot. arizona senator john mccain took a swipe at the president saying his inaction to support anti-iranian government demonstrators years ago may have allowed for this plot to unfold. >> early in 2009, the early stages of the obama presidency, there was a flawed and corrupt election. people of iran rose up and they were saying in the streets, obama, obama, are you with us or are you with them? and president obama's answer was, i don't want to jeopardize my chances to negotiate with the

iranian islamic republic. that was a moment. >> as the case unfolds, some of the strongest evidence tiesing iran to the assassination plot is coming from two wire trans r transfers routing the down payment on the proposed killing to a u.s. bank account secretly managed by the fbi. officials say the money transfer is offering investigators important insight into operations within the iranian government. nbc's michael issycough is reporting that the suspect in the case is claiming his iranian handlers were actively involved in the drug trade and could arrange for large shipments of opium to be delivered to a mexican drug cartel. his sources say the information comes from recorded conversations between the suspect and iranian officials, but several analysts again still believe such a link is doubtful and questions will and should persist. officials say the top leader of the haqqani terrorist network was killed in a drone strike in pakistan yesterday. right near the afghanistan border. security officials say at least nine other militants were killed when the drone fired two

missiles hitting a hideout of taliban militants. haqqani network is considered the number one threat to afghanistan and officials note that the leader killed was responsible for orchestrating attacks on troops in kabul. meanwhile, back in washington, defense secretary leon panetta warned congress yesterday of the impact of cuts to defense spending. saying the imposed cuts are already taking the military, quote, to the edge. >> we would be looking at having to increase the number of rifts within the military and in addition to that, there's no question that we would hallow out the force because it would require these drastic, deep across-the-board cuts that would affect training and equipment and everything else, it would be devastating in terms of our national defense. >> secretary panetta went on to say such cuts would force the pentagon to reduce its presence in troubled areas around the world including in africa. today's headlines in the new york tabloids, "the new york post," wall street face-off.

the new yo"new york daily news,s it a show joan as anonymous city officials it appears the corporate owners of the park where the occupy wall street protesters have gathered may be backing down from their demands to clean the parks this morning. the owners along with mayor bloomberg told demonstrators yesterday they must remove tents and sleeping bags so the park could be cleaned for sanitation reasons effectively clearing the park of protesters. now the officials say the owners are in talks with the nypd about not enforcing that plan. no official comment yet from the city or that owner of the park. meanwhile, demonstrators are preparing for tomorrow's international day of protest from melbourne to new york. the millions are taking a stand against economic inequality. posting all over the web about where and when to gather. protesters are rallying in several major u.s. cities police arrested a half dozen people in portland while the fight in dallas goes to court over a request for an indefinite
