My name is Shona Hammond Boys, and I’m the founder-director of the New Zealand Children’s Art House Foundation.
I have dedicated my life to children’s art and values education, and have been recognized for my work by Queen Elizabeth.
There are 30 art houses in New Zealand and our emphasis is on the core values of love, kindness, empathy, caring and responsibility. Children are encouraged to express themselves through art.
I now want to take this approach to the world with a focus on the major problems that confront children everywhere: war and conflict; poverty and deprivation; pollution and climate change.
Through art we can do this in such a way as to be politically, religiously and culturally neutral. Art is universal, as are the values we are promoting. With a 100 million dollar fund we could build, staff, supply, and maintain children’s art houses throughout the world, based on our New Zealand model. I propose we consider calling the fund “The MacArthur Foundation International Children’s Art House Fund.”
This would be a phased-in global process over 6 years in as many countries as possible. We would also seek matching funds or lesser contributions from the United Nations, as well as national and local governments.
I hope you will recognize the importance of this values-based project for the children of the world which I know we can implement through art.
