i don't even want to go into how the children and the grandchildren of these victims have their lives impacted when they lose someone that is close to them. ok now ronnie you are with standpoint research and this is research that's you're making available to money managers pension funds and people on wall street so when you do your analysis and when you look at a company like philip morris or amazon or apple do you actually ascribe a let's call it a morality risk and try to quantify that in terms of what this could mean to the share price if morality were suddenly realized in terms of being discounted by the stock price if you catch my meaning in other words if apple computer is yeah go ahead and understand the question and the answer is in

york city studio to talk about the innovation economy and it's the end of the week which means it's viewer feedback day here on boom bust edward harrison and i are addressing your questions coming to cern to live on the. so i want to miss a moment and it all starts right now. we have a great show in store for you today but first we want to get a little of the heavier news out of the way so here we go consumer spending in the u.s. surprisingly fell zero point one percent in the month of april it was the first monthly drop in a year's time and comes as a potentially worse some sign for an economic recovery the commerce department said spending consumer spending was down eight point one billion dollars last month the

decrease came after a strong spending month in march now time for the fun stuff it's upon us now happy friday eve or microsoft c.e.o. steve ballmer will buy the los angeles clippers for a reported two billion dollars the team's co-owners shelly sterling sent out a media release thursday night stating that the struggling family trust had agreed to sell the team to the former microsoft chief executive bulmer outbid the likes of oprah winfrey and david geffen for the l.a. based basketball team however the deal must still be cleared by donald sterling who had controlled the team for more than three decades before he was caught on tape insulting african-americans shelly sterling who owns the clippers with her husband through a trust so that she was delighted with the deal yet mr sterling's lawyer bobby samee argues that as a cohen or of the team he has to consent to the clippers sale and his wrist refusing to back the deal now so mean he said quote that's his position he's not

going to sell n.b.a. owners are due to meet in new york on tuesday to consider mr sterling's remarks the latest development could preemptive move by the n.b.a. to force mr sterling. to sell his interest in the team the deal will also need the blessing of the twenty nine other and be a owners who are expected to approve it as long as baltimore pledge is again to keep the team in los angeles and not move them to seattle or bombers based on mr ballmer said in a statement that he was honored to have his name put forward to the n.b.a. for approval and he thanked the league for working collaboratively with him throughout the sale for sale of the l.a. clippers requires the approval of three quarters of the thirty team owners in the n.b.a. mr ballmer retired from microsoft in february but he still owns shares in the company so it's unclear how barmore will actually pay for the acquisition but our next guest may be able to shed some light on that very subject and much more on the economy of sports as a whole fitter mouth's it is a professor of economics at the college of the holy cross specializing in sports

economy and a perfect perfect guest to elaborate on today's events with the clippers now i spoke with him earlier and i started off by asking him to give us his take on this whole big deal take a look. first of all i think everyone thought that the clippers were going to sell for a lot of money last year forbes rated the clippers in their annual wage and at five hundred seventy five million dollars and most economists said that's that's way low especially since last month we saw the lowly milwaukee bucks in a much smaller market with a much worse team sold for five hundred fifty million dollars i think everyone thought that the clippers were going to sell for a lot of money i said look nine hundred million maybe a billion dollars and then today we get an announcement that the clippers win is for two billion that's a lot of money and i think that's a lot more than most that thomas and most other observers thought we thought was going to be a big number but that's a really big number major league baseball's dodgers that team just sold for two

point fifteen million two years ago so here's my question how does one price out a major sports franchise i think there's two real issues going on here so first of all is you need to look at the revenue streams that places are likely to generate the clippers are in a you know the nation's second largest media market it's a market that has shown that it's willing to pay top dollar for basketball obviously the lakers have probably been the biggest draw in town for the last couple decades so one thing you do is you look at the streams of revenue and there's no doubt that the n.b.a. looks very healthy healthy going forward there was some question about you know maybe a decade ago would be n.b.a. be able to replace its restored retiring superstars like larry bird and magic johnson and michael jordan and i think with the error of their rent and bron james clearly we've got a new generation of superstar talent that's highly charismatic these are great

players that the fans like and so the revenues at least going forward look pretty good for the n.b.a. and for an n.b.a. owner in l.a. . now you wrote a paper. or on sports franchises events and city livability two years ago and this is a big issue economically and legally now in two thousand and five the us supreme court ruled in kelo vs the city of new london connecticut that a city could they could invoke eminent domain under the fifth amendment of the us constitution and this is if a community would enjoy general benefits from economic growth from private redevelopment plan so i want to ask you what do you make of sports arenas like barclays center out atlantic yards in brooklyn displacing residents under eminent domain like this. well my personal feeling of that is that's a that's a pretty awful thing to do and to local residents is to clear them out just so a private n.b.a. owner a private arena owner can own a can own

a bigger nicer stadium what we are seeing in the last five years or so is a lot more privately financed stadiums but publicly owned so you have an odd situation where a private owner decides to pay for the stadium but they want the local municipality to actually own it that gives them all sorts of tax advantages and also makes way for the local government to be able to use eminent domain to. get rid of any roadblocks that might be in the way of creating these statements i want to ask you is the first amendment right is the fifth amendment the right not to incriminate oneself is this how did they how are they able to employ not an awning on then. well there are the real key is you there is a real public reason to want to the government to have some towers of eminent domain so for example if you got a major interstate that kind of connected boston and new york or l.a. and san francisco and there's one person with one old house in the middle of where

that's going to go and they refuse to sell no matter how much the government gets you know for the public good you say look we need this we need this road and there's one person standing in the way there is a sense that look the needs of the many outweigh the needs of that one person and we we as the government compensate them adequately but then also make the move that's a whole lot different though than a private business being able to force someone to move because they want a more profitable real estate development or a more profitable commercial development and i think you're really on the edge of things where you say look we're going to we're going to be. use the government to try to increase economic activity for private actors and that's real question of course the new london decision has had huge there's there was a huge outrage against that and you've seen many legislative actions being taken to

try to undo exactly what the court did in that case now you wrote a paper on the employment effects of the two thousand and two winter olympics in salt lake city utah and this was an event that was overseen by former us presidential candidate mitt romney now did you find that the olympics were an economic boon to salt lake city area and if so in what way is so with most mega vets and most most sporting events and sporting franchises these things actually all are good for the economy but they're the amount of economic impact they have is a fraction of what is usually claimed by boosters so for example in the salt lake city case we did in fact find that salt lake city had a market increase in the employment during two thousand and two that employment dissipated after a year and we found that in fact the olympics created about seventy thousand jobs and that's great unfortunately the winter olympic committee in salt lake city had

predicted it was going to produce thirty five thousand new jobs so what we found was a positive effect of the olympics but about one fifth of what the organizers claimed and we see this again and again in all sorts of activities from the super bowl the world series to stadiums and so again sports are a nice thing there are good for your economy but they're almost certainly good at a fraction of what the sports with your say. that was victor maltzahn professor of economics at because of the holy cross. time now for a very quick break but stick around because when we return we have bill janeway live on the show janeway is joining us via art and why is the studio to discuss the innovation economy plus edward harrison and i are tackling your viewer feedback in our weekly accrued interest segment but before we go here are a look at some your closing numbers of the bell the graph.

financial crisis period an opportunity for economic revolution well dr bill janeway is a venture capitalist a trained economist and an expert in understanding the innovation economy and he's joining us live from our new york city studio welcome to the show dr janeway now i want to start off by asking you right away you wrote a book called doing capitalism in the innovation economy in which you talk about the state as a principal actor in economic innovation so what is the key concept in the book. there are two the the central focus is that investing at the front here at the technological front here investing requires funding projects which are likely to fail progress is made by trial and error and error and they have the historically not just in the united states been two sources of capital to fund innovation at the front here the first has been

a mission driven politically the judgment state which has been able to mobilize resources most visibly to all of us alive today on the one hand through the u.s. defense department and laying the foundations for the digital economy from silicon to software and including the internet and on the other the national institutes of health creating the scientific base for the biotechnology revolution. those are two examples but at a certain point when the technology has reached a stage where it's ready for commercial primetime then the funding historically and today has come from financial speculators from investors who are prepared to commit funds on the long term that first that it just might turn out to be google or facebook if you like once upon

a time microsoft or apple but also are playing in liquid financial markets these are absolutely crucial acts access to the public stock market for ventures to be able to raise money at scale in order to be able to mobilize capital where the investor actually can make a profit can win even over the long term the project does not turn out to be economically viable again it's trial and error and error we saw this in the nineteenth century the railroads were funded in the united states and the united kingdom the pioneers of the railroad age were funded by speculators in the public capital market right the railroads were built the tracks were laid the companies that built them and that sold their stock off and went bust those are the examples of if you like positive bubbles positive speculative waves that fund technology

at a scale that would never be accomplished by the rational prudent investor of the economic textbook of course those aren't the only kinds of bubbles bubbles also fun beach houses in the nevada desert tulip bulbs gold mines all sorts of waste when they infect the banking system as they did in two thousand and eight. then then the bubbles are on a quickly negative and their consequences can be disastrous so this is not a simple statement bubbles are good go for speculation it's that the focus of speculation and whether it's limited to the stock market or whether it is leverage to the massive leverage that takes place in the banking system and affects the whole economy that is a crucial difference one that has been difficult for people to grasp when they

realize that we've had this tremendous destruction since two thousand and eight but on the other hand in the late one nine hundred ninety s. the dotcom telepaths com bubble but it buzz produced very little damage at all to the broader economy either in the united states or around the world dr singh way i want to ask you if you economic questions now innovation and uncertainty are closely intertwined yet today neoclassical economics seems to adhere to the idea of rational expectations so what impact does uncertainty have on technology innovation and the economy. rational expectations is in the process of fading away it was a dream it was i how papa says it was always called the rational expectations i papa says it was a fantasy that blew up in two thousand and eight for economics for the disciplines of economics and finance i like to say that two thousand and eight is the gift that

keeps on giving because it has forced economists and financial theorists to reckon with the actual context in which economic and financial decisions are made it is pushed economists back to rediscovering the great works not just of paid or who actually on the subject was not terribly insightful but of keynes of the great high minsky forgotten now remembered as the the author of the minsky moment yes and i want to talk to them about that i want to know about nancy is right now you're associated with the teachings of hyman minsky who is an economist who has received a lot of press since the great financial crisis so what is your work with minsky tell you about the period we're going through we're getting venture capital technology investing and about the economy more generally. well meant that minsky was really concerned with the banking system with the credit system and he certainly got right the idea that when stability breeds instability

when bankers lend money and people pay it back routinely they lend more money and the credit system moves through this kind of almost it seems fated path from a very conservative hedged situation where the borrowers are paying back the money they borrow out of their operating cash flow to what he called the speculative phase when they're paying their interest but they have to refinance the principal of the debt to where we get to what he called the ponzi level where the lenders are actually the lending the borrowers the interest which they then pay back when you reach that stage which we did in two thousand and seven they the game is the game is up pretty quickly it's interesting today this morning that gillian tett who's work in the financial times i admire enormously had an article about maybe things are getting too stable maybe volatility has declined so much that

we're going to see a rise of speculative valuations of assets that could be destructive again i think we're seeing that but it's very isolated house prices in london the occasional social media want to be a challenger to facebook but it's not infecting the markets as a whole i think the problem what we're really living through now is the long term extended process of paying down the debt in the private sector it was the enormous accumulation of debt by households and by corporations that got us into this trouble and by banks it's certainly not the leveraging is continuing and it's why i expect we will have disappointing and frustrating least slow growth not just in the us. but in europe as well dr jane i wish i had more time to talk to you have great answers here but sadly we're out of time so you have to promise to come back on the

what's already had to slow recovery so you know within that when they're within a point half a point of full employment then i'd really start thinking about beginning to raise interest rates if there's any sign of inflation then i think they have to consider raising interest rates but right now there's just no signs of inflation anywhere on the rise and so that's not a worry. now in response to that you viewer brian anderson said quote this professor mark thomas is ridiculous no inflation question mark look at food costs fuel medical housing the stock market education rising prices are rampant everywhere in the ivory tower of banking government and academia so edward is china being wacky or is his analysis solid what do you think well you know the thing the more concerned is that stock market thing that was talked about goes back to what bill janeway had to say janeway was talking about what gillian tett. and i used to be a credit market and actually even more concerned about the credit markets because when

jane we was talking about two thousand and eight and its destruction he was really talking about the fact that in the one nine hundred ninety s. we had a stock market bubble that was massive but it wasn't associated with the credit markets as a result didn't have as deleterious effect is when you infect the credit markets and then you have the potential for debt deflation as after you have the inflation not only of asset prices but of of the debt that is underlying those asset prices that's when bad things happen and that's what we're seeing right now is an increase in debt in a very negative and frothy almost bubble is just kind of we're always. going to move right on and we're moving on to europe and the problems from the euro zone now here's a clip from our interview with marshall are about your day don't. hear this one trillion is a real problem the bigger problem that you have the banks in europe is that they're massively overcapitalized relative to g.d.p. and so the question becomes how do you guarantee the deposits in

a credible way and i don't think that's been resolved i mean ireland for example that really was the camel of the straw that broke the camel's back in the sense that you had the irish government that said several years ago we're going to guarantee all of the pause in the of the irish banks and the markets began to say well hold on irish banks as a percentage of to. about five or six times g.d.p. how can the irish government which doesn't issue the euro credibly back those deposits and that's the same problem you have across europe even in place have your good o'kane now or here thought that was pretty good and he wrote to say quote as mr r. back pointed out the monetary and fiscal architecture of europe is cultivating imbalance in the union since the introduction the progression of this imbalance has been like watching a slow car crash however the origins of this architecture are rarely allies edward do you make what do you make of the euro zone's flawed monetary and fiscal architecture when you think you know what marc marsh was talking about it's even.

g.d.p. of arlon the banks it's a symptom of these imbalances that we saw so you had german capital flow into ireland as a result of the suppression of wages in germany the so-called internal devaluation . there was a huge asset price bubble in places like ireland and spain as a result of the irish and spanish banks levered. they became unsustainable in their size as well as the asset bubble when things collapse the question was who's going to pick up the pieces because these are individual countries it's not the regulatory issue and that creates a massive problem that we see with the juxtaposition between the national and the supernational in the e.u. and that's what we're seeing play out throughout europe and it's not over we think that it's over now because of compressing but i think that the problem's going to come. in the next cyclical downturn and we're running out of time but i quickly

want to move on to julie sandals and she was on the show to talk about net neutrality and we're not going play the bass but she was talking about latency which is another word for delay and how that affects the company's business so in response that segment michael g. argue this as the saying goes the cure for high prices is high prices if there is a free market in the internet. a company driving up prices won by the competition and their capital potential profit margins rise and word is the cure for high prices just higher prices we have thirty seconds for them to get take over because you have to look at the market structure over the period of time before those higher prices invite competition when you're in an industry that is highly capital intensive then you would have high prices for a long time before you're actually in competition and that's going to be a huge problem in telecom we're talking about five ten fifteen years down the. solution what i do think you're so much that's all for now but you can see all

news and comment live from moscow this is our senior national with me. and our very well welcome to the program. there's been a fresh spike of violence in the eastern ukrainian city of slovyansk where receiving reports of army helicopters opening fire on the city earlier local self-defense forces said two people were killed and four injured with civilians among them as ukrainian forces at times overnight sitting around hundred thousand people is one of the main targets of kiev's military operation in the region it's residential areas have come under fire several times this week was shelled houses and even a school and into gas and many locals are leaving the city or at least seeking to send away their children hundreds were evacuated to crimea and will be housed there in some accounts paula ca's following the situation in the region for its.

in the last two days more and more civilians have found themselves in the line of fire there was a children's hospital that was shelled a number of residential buildings have been attacked at the same time there was a school and a kindergarten that came under fire locals tell us on friday they was allowed in fighting presumably this was to coincide with the fact that it was the last day of school but what people on the ground are telling us is that overnight shelling in the eastern ukrainian town of slovyansk resumed now at least two hundred children have been evacuated from the town to the resort of crimea this was a journey that was not without its hic cups but what we do understand is that the children are now safely in crimea of course they had to face the hardiest journey of unsafe roads this was not the only problem there was also the question of alerting the ukrainian authorities that there were buses with children making their way through this territory we did manage to catch up with a few of the children and this is what they told us. the city often comes under

mortar shelling people get hurt as a result of mourners going to the signs on your wall that hit my grandfather's leg even pierced the boat it went a little deeper it could hit an artery and that would be it. is that it was the last what you just saw unusually calm and quiet here no explosions going off as compared to what we left in five hours it was scary nobody expected the things like that start happening in our small town but it was never famous for anything what it is that ash not just i was very scared there were explosions any of my dead just celebrated his birthday and he was ruined by the sound of shelling that day i'm really glad i'm here now it's coming and to protect it as the violence seemingly spirals out of control more and more innocent people are being hurt and even killed so many people here on the ground expect that the violence we've witnessed over the past few days is just a taste of what's to come. and there are also reports that another group of around

three hundred children may be evacuated from slovyansk to other safer towns in the region the situation where youngsters are at constant risk of being caught in the crossfire has triggered an online campaign and as you can see here on this video all the hashtag save donbass children is spreading on social media now with many joining the online action calling for a stop to military operation in eastern ukraine however ukrainian news outlets are accusing the local militia of using children as human shields and staging provocations foreign affairs expert in the bush in mileage believes the claims are illogical. it's propaganda it strikes me as very ham fisted and frankly absurd if the people in slovyansk want to really make a propaganda bit out of it dean would have tried to keep the civilians you know them to sides are suffering to the world media it's more much more likely that they're just trying to get the children away so that they don't fall victim to the

indiscriminate shelling by the government forces if you look at the record of the of these people and how they essentially defied. the oligarch armed forces with their bare hands in the peaceful until they had no other option but to fight i seriously think this is the first per your sister or celebration. meanwhile a thousand strong crowd has rallied in donetsk the hubble pro autonomy sentiment towards the authorities first houses were venting that period key appalls waging a military crime down on the return of the also demanded peace there says he is also one of the main targets of the military operation and earlier today they were called so when you'd find sing a big international airport on the training ground of a local football club. authorities in donetsk are warning locals against approaching the area surrounding the airport because of the frequent gun fights happening that have to ask dot com to follow a minute by minute updates on the developing situation in the country. the.
