that's because of what was going on with the truck accident yesterday on the new jersey turnpike which has completely been cleared away. now, we are looking at the b.q.e. up the northbound side. this is your delay coming up to the brooklyn bridge. we do have our street cleaning rules in effect today. ken, back to you. >> heather, thank you. happening now, thousands of families on long island are waking up in the dark after hard hitting storms roared through. it will take a while before they see the light, maybe until friday. the towns of brookhaven, smithtown and the village of see take you ket. that's where kala rama picks up the story. kala? >> reporter: ken, you know, all of this looks like a lot of progress. you can see behind me a lot of trees piled up from the cleanup overnight. 16,000 customers are without power. they may not get it back until friday big midday. let me show you the problem.

there are trees toppled over homes and trunks acting as barricades in the roadway. thousands of trees tangled in power lines that look like they are just about ready to snap. the people in this area are complaining there is not enough utility crews working on getting the power back. the storm hit around 5:00 yesterday morning with straight line winds of about 80 miles per hour. since then pse&g long island had about 500 to 600 crews on the roads. today they have help from con ed crews. 16,000 customers in the dark want to see action now. >> pse&g has to get the stuff off the lines. we don't want to cause more damage to the electrical infrastructure and i don't want to put my employees in jeopardy. at this point we are waiting for additional crews from pse&g to remove the trees that are involved with the lines and then we will continue cutting our way back to these neighborhoods.

if you identify the men, give police a call. in queens, police want your help in finding this man in connection with an attack on a woman in elmhurst. the suspect put a sharp object to a woman's neck as she tried to get in her home. she ran off when the woman screamed. she was treated for a cut to the neck. as you heard from heather, the new jersey turnpike is open following a fiery and deadly crash. all lanes reopened around 10:00 last night, nearly 12 hours after a dump truck hit an overpass and burst into flames. the fire backed up traffic in both directions well into the night. crews worked through the night to repair a giant sinkhole that swallowed a street in brooklyn. the hole wormed yesterday after a huge water main broke at 5th avenue and 64th street and sunset park. the sinkhole is massive. about 20 by 20 feet to put the size of that into perspective, it's big enough to hold three

mid-size cars with plenty of room to spare. mayor de blasio says the deadly legionnaires outbreak has peaked in new york city. health officials passed out fliers in the south bronx with tips about how to avoid the disease. for some it's too late. a 67-year-old died sunday. his stepdaughter talked to jim dolan. >> reporter: she was with her husband 43 years. now she and her family sit in a darkened bronx apartment wondering what happened. suddenly on thursday, carmelo was too weak to answer the door of his home. >> at the door maybe 7 minutes when i told my brother he had to go downstairs and get someone to open the door for us. when they finally came up, he was on the floor. >> reporter: he was taken to montefiore medical center where he died. he had a number of preexisting conditions like asthma and diabetes. the ideal host for the disease to rage unchecked.

but the family blames the city. >> in a way they were negligent because the first time that they found out about it, they could have done something bit before letting it spread throughout the bronx. >> this is not the time to let an older member of your family say i don't want to go to the doctor. these the time that we have to really encourage people to seek care. >> the city made real progress combating the spread of the disease which is spread by a mist that comes from cooling towers like one at the opera house hotel near where he lived and one at lincoln hospital, towers contaminated with the legionella bacteria. >> we identified the only sites that are causing this outbreak. they have all been cleaned. >> we should see beginning in about a week's time declining number of cases. >> reporter: dr. bassett believes the city is ahead of this thing and that the worst is over.

weather alert app. go to the itunes or google play store and search wabc or accutrack. the search is on for a burglar targeting apartments around midtown. he hit six times since february. rob nelson is live in hell's kitchen with the video they want you to see. >> reporter: good morning, ken. fire escapes in the city are designed to give people a way to get out of a building. for one guy out on the loose, his way to get in the building. take a look at this video. this is what police want to you see this morning. this is the suspect in action a few days ago on july 25th. he is on the fire escape of this building near 10th and 57th street looking for away in about 7:00 a.m. the would be victim, a 24-year- old woman inside heard noise outside of her window and saw the man. that's when he got scared and fled. not before looking right in to the security camera which

captured a crystal clear image of his face. police believe the same man struck five other locations in midtown since february. sometimes escaping with credit cards, jewelry, electronics and even clothing. now, back here live, you can see fire escapes here facing 10th avenue. these are on the front of a different building, though. the fire escapes that the suspect used in the case was around the corner in back of the buildings. he was able to get up there and in the apartment. again, six incidents since february until july 25, the same kind of operation to use the fire escape to get in the building. three incidents on 10th avenue. police say if you recognize the guy in the clear surveillance video, call crimestoppers and give them a tip. reporting live in hell's kitchen, rob nelson, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, rob. new this morning, there is very clear video just out from police of a man wanted for attempted rape in the south bronx. detectives say the man appeared to be browsing last saturday in

a clothing store but he then attacked the 41-year-old clerk working alone. she managed to fight him off and fled the store -- he fled the store at that point. he is there on the video. police are hoping somebody else can help identify him. new this morning, police are looking for the suspect in a violent attack on a woman in chinatown. take a look at these pictures. the attack happened a little more than 24 hours ago. investigators say this man walked up to a 55-year-old woman and hit her in the back while she was standing at mott and grand streets. she was treated for a cut at the hospital. happening today, the mayor of mount vernon holding a noon news conference to address the jail cell death of raynette take turner. she was arrested for shopping lifting and two days after that arrest she was found dead in her cell. an autopsy did not solve the mystery of why she died. an investigation has been launched by state attorney general eric schneider.

>> in the middle of the street. i didn't want to hit him and he shot my car three times. >> the shooting happened in sparta last month after the teens mistakenly knocked on the trooper's door. the teens ran when the trooper came out with a gun. the trooper fired three shots as the teens drove away. in a 911 call the trooper's wife says they tried to run him down. >> my husband is a state trooper, he went outside and fired three shots and almost hit them. now he is in his car pursuing them. >> the teenage driver claims he swerved to avoid the trooper standing in the street. nobody was hurt in the shooting. so far no charges have been filed. thousands of northern california residents remain in shelters because of more than 100 square mile wildfire. the fire has been pushed and revived at times by erratic winds that forced firefighters

>> i didn't cause it. let's go to the maps. you can experience delays on the downtown side to dekalb avenue with mechanical problems. all of our mass transit systems are on or close to schedule otherwise. l.i.e. eastbound near exit 19, that is an accident being cleared away. then, of course, as you head to the b.q.e. northeast that ramp to the brooklyn bridge, that is closed down then the brooklyn bridge is closed into manhattan with overnight construction. sawmill river parkway south exits 20 into 17 you have only one lane open and that, of course, is because of that ongoing construction. only one lane open at this point. again, brooklyn bridge is closed into manhattan. other east river crossings aren't doing badly. hudson river crossings are doing okay. a webcam, staten island expressway, the eastbound side into the area of richmond avenue, out into south avenue, you have the earlier construction picked up. it looks like traffic is doing just fine through this spot. we have alternate side of the street parking rules in effect today.

ken, over to you. >> heather, thank you. crews are hard at work trying to restore power to people in suffolk county. eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live in where reinforcements arrived overnight. good morning, kala. >> reporter: good morning, ken. we are making progress. last check, we have just under 14,000 customers in the dark. let me show you what is going on. the trucks have been coming around the clock dumping off the limbs adding to the pile that has been her overnight. some think they don't have the power back until afternoon. there are trees toppled over homes and trunks acting like barricades in the roadways. thousands of trees tangled in power lines and some of them resting on the power lines that look like they are about to snap. the people in this area are complaining that there is not enough utility crews working on getting the power back. that storm hit around 5:00

yesterday morning with straight line winds reported up to 80 miles per hour. since then, pse&g long island said they had about 3500 to 600 crews on the roads. today they are getting extra help. 50 con ed crews have come in and started work. there are 14,000 customers in the dark that want to see more action. >> pse&g has to get that stuff off the line. we don't want to cause more damage to the electrical infrastructure and i don't want to put my employees in jeopardy. so, as this point, we are waiting for additional crews from pse&g to remove the trees involved with the lines and then we will continue cutting our way back into these neighborhoods. like this one behind me that is completely inaccessible. >> reporter: from dronecam 7 you can see it from a different angle. limbs are down in every direction.

sparked by a dispute between two housing projects. investigators say the suspects shot the wrong people. new video from police this morning. three suspects wanted for a home invasion robbery in the bronx. the men were recorded by a lobby surveillance camera in riverdale. they were on their way up the apartment of a woman. the men beat the older woman and forced her to open a safe containing $50,000. if you can identify these men, give police a call. this morning we know who is in and who is out. the stage is set for the first republican presidential debate with room for only ten candidates and new jersey governor chris christie made the list. the announcement comes as one of those can dads, jeb bush gets in a twitter battle with hillary clinton. bazi kanani joins us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, ken. a relief for some and major disappointment for seven others
