[ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] so congratulations to everyone. congratulations to you, sir, and you, ma'am. some huge tv news here. it's rumored that jennifer lopez is getting $12 million and steven tyler is getting $18 million to be judges on "american idol." wow! while randy jackson is getting to sit next to steven tyler and jennifer lopez. you hear about this? katy perry is making headlines for wear a low-cut dress on an upcoming episode of "sesame street," during a duet with elmo. [ light laughter ] in fact, the dress was so skimpy, elmo started tickling himself. [ laughter ] i don't even know what to make of this. an inmate in north carolina tried to smuggle a cell phone into jail by hiding it inside his rectum. [ audience groans ] when they caught him, the guy was like "i've got to call you back."

[ laughter ] "what do you got? a watch? okay." scientists in utah have discovered a new species of dinosaur believed to have the most horns of any dinosaur in history. experts call it the horniest dinosaur ever -- and then -- [ laughter ] wait for it, wait for it, wait for it. and then larry king said, "well, i had a good run. but what are you going to do?" a school bus driver in florida is facing suspension after she was caught on camera texting while driving a bus full of students. when asked if they were scared, the students were like "scared of what? scared of what?" [ laughter ] and finally, justin bieber made his acting debut tonight on the season premiere of "csi." that's right, "csi." in the episode, justin is forced to investigate a very suspicious arrival -- pubes. [ band plays "parents just don't understand" by dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince ] ♪ ♪ okay, here's the situation my parents went away on weeks vacation ♪ and they left the keys to the brand-new porsche would they mind? ♪ ♪ mm-mm, well of course not i'll just take it ♪ ♪ for a little spin and maybe it off to a couple of friends ♪ ♪ i'll just cruise it around the neighborhood well, maybe i shouldn't ♪ ♪ yes, of course i should ♪ [ cheers and applause ]

'cause i broke my little toe. and i hit my toe on the end of the table, and i immediately leaned in, and was like, "hey, you guys, i broke my toe." [ laughter ] and it was like 4:00 a.m. >> jimmy: you broke your toe. >> and so i -- [ laughter ] so i had to go to the airport the next day to fly back to my children. and i was walking like -- i had a baseball hat on. and i was walking in the airport like this -- like all -- whatever, it was -- i mean, that's how i roll. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: oh, my gosh. [ cheers and applause ] unbelievable. >> it's not a party unless you break something. >> jimmy: including a toe. >> yeah. >> jimmy: congrats. little baby -- >> baby abel. >> jimmy: abel. >> yeah, abel. >> jimmy: oh my gosh, that's so cute. >> yeah, thanks. >> jimmy: that's great and, yeah, i know archie. he was here. >> yeah, archie's two and abel's six weeks. >> jimmy: oh, my gosh. >> yeah. >> jimmy: is it awesome? how's archie doing with abel? >> he loves him -- well, he -- he just kind of laughs at him. he thinks he's kind of funny. like, he thinks he's like a funny prop. [ laughter ] they were like, "oh my god!" >> "oh my god!" >> jimmy: "put your bags in the air!" everyone's like waving bags of chips. >> yeah, 'cause that was their thing and then, they would put the bags on their head. they'd be like, "i can't see" -- >> jimmy: i thought you were gonna say, "i broke my toe! call back!" >> oh! [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: i want to talk about it quickly. one of the cooler things you do. you do so many cool things. i'm the biggest fan of amy poehler but -- smart girls at the party. >> yeah, it's a website i do, and i do little webisodes, and it's like a charlie rose interview show for girls and -- >> jimmy: little girls, young girls.

>> young girls, yeah. between the ages of like 8 and 13. and we just kind of ask them about what they're interested in and then it ends with a dance party. >> jimmy: so, you'll do like a whole show on like cookies? >> yes, a whole show on like reading or -- you know -- >> jimmy: one girl likes robots. >> yeah. >> jimmy: and she like talks about how she likes -- why she likes robots. it is so cool. >> thanks. >> jimmy: amy miles, who does a lot of the songs for our show over here -- >> yes, she's -- >> jimmy: she's so talented -- >> and meredith walker. >> jimmy: and meredith walker. >> yeah, it's "smart girls at the party.com." and we're gonna be doing more stuff and putting more stuff up there and -- >> jimmy: it ends with a dance party? >> every episode ends with a dance party because we -- we kind of -- you how you want to encourage girls that age to be okay with looking silly 'cause very early they're gonna be told to worry about how they look? and we always say that, like, you can't look stupid if you're having fun. so, it's -- it's encouraging people to just dance like idiots. >> jimmy: i like that. >> yeah, i know, i know. >> jimmy: let's do a dance party now. >> all right, are we ready? let's end it.

and we shot six episodes before the season was over last time. so they're all ready to go, and that was when i was like pregnant. so, like, we had to get them in before i got too big. so by the end of like the sixth episode, like, there's this show where leslie is burying a time capsule, and i'm standing behind the time capsule the whole time. these people try to sue -- everyone tries to sue him. >> yeah, yeah. >> jimmy: he's got, like, lawsuits everywhere. >> everywhere. >> jimmy: and you play a lawyer? >> i play a legal associate. >> jimmy: legal associate. >> yes, i'm on my way to being a lawyer. >> jimmy: yeah, but you're kind of -- i think you're like the pov of us. like, you're kind of -- because you're watching him and then it's almost like the camera kind of cuts in to your thinking, and then you see what actually happens? >> yeah, yeah. i feel like the movie, it's relentless in a good way. it's so smart, and there's so much dialogue, and so much happens, and i'm sort of, like, kind of outside -- you know, i'm the witness to all of it. i just sit and listen to all these details about how it went down and everybody's point of view, and then i kind of offer my assessment of that. >> jimmy: yeah, and you have a great last scene -- it's the last scene in the movie. >> yeah, don't ruin it. you guys are going to see it, right? >> jimmy: yeah, yeah. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: that's more than i've sold, that's amazing. that's, like, the greatest. that's so hard to do that. >> it's hard, writing is, but it's fun. >> jimmy: and then, look at this guy, you have a comic book? >> i have a comic book. i do. >> jimmy: "frenemy of the state." >> yeah, i have a comic book. >> jimmy: and, it's kind of a cool story. what'd you base this story off of, "fremeny of the state"? >> i based it -- it's about a socialite who is recruited to become a spy, and it was kind of like i had this wish, this fantasy that maybe like paris hilton or kim kardashian, that one of these girls had like this great, secret life. like, they were, like, geniuses and they were, like, plotting and planning. [ laughter ] you know, like they didn't just put on makeup and look pretty, and go out to parties, that they were doing, like, cool things and saving our world. >> jimmy: spy stuff.

but it's taking off, that's good. you have -- >> yeah, it's doing well. people seem to like it. >> jimmy: you've got one -- you've got two of them? >> i'm new -- >> jimmy: you're going to comic book shows? you're signing -- >> i'm doing signings. i'm very new to this. so, i'm like -- i have a lot of respect for people who do this and love this art form, and so i'm trying to learn, but they've been very nice to me so far. >> jimmy: and when does "the social network" come out? comes out in two weeks, yes? >> yes. >> jimmy: this is going to be a big, big movie. >> yeah, i think everybody's going to like it. >> jimmy: and as a person that went to harvard, was it accurate? >> it was, but they make it like -- there's like -- i hung out at the final clubs that, you know, are kind of like our versions of fraternities. they're old, old, old versions of fraternities. >> jimmy: yeah, in this movie they're like, throwing dice, and there's strippers making out with each other. >> yeah. i mean, it's a little. it's not that sexy. it's harvard. come on. >> jimmy: what are they doing in these -- >> there's definitely drinking, you know, and playing pool and beer pong, which is -- it's basically like a fraternity in a really, really, really nice building. >> jimmy: yeah, but they -- >> that's it. >> jimmy: but they do portray it really pretty besides that? >> yeah, besides the fact that it's sexier and everybody is a tiny bit better-looking, yeah, it's very accurate.

[ band plays "road to nowhere" by the talking heads ] ♪ ♪ we're on a road to nowhere, hey we're on a road to nowhere ♪ [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: very, very good. nice to meet you. congratulations on "kick ass." >> thank you very much. >> jimmy: i love that movie so much. in that movie, i think in my head you're like 14 years old or something. >> yeah, i guess so. >> jimmy: you look very young, yeah, in that movie. and i didn't even know you were british, either, so it was a double whammy. you're a very good actor. [ laughter ] >> thank you. >> jimmy: but, i love that movie. it was great. was that your first movie, no? >> no, no. i did a couple things before when i was younger. in fact, i started when i was six. and i did stuff in the theater in the west end. >> jimmy: the west end is like our broadway in london. >> yeah, yeah. >> jimmy: must be intimidating? >> yeah, it was pretty intimidating. one of the things, i was 8, and i did "macbeth." i played son of macduff, not

"macbeth." and i -- >> jimmy: it was the kids version of "macbeth." >> yeah, right. and one of the scenes is a quite a sweet scene with his mother, and then these villains come in and kill macduff and his mother, and they drown me. the scene just before, i'm in this bath, and i had to come on the stage completely naked when i was 8 years old. >> jimmy: oh, boy. >> which obviously couldn't happen like, nowadays, but -- >> jimmy: yeah, they probably wouldn't -- legally, let that happen. >> i remember thinking it was pretty odd, and why i wasn't wearing, like, a nude speedo or something. >> jimmy: yeah, but, well, you don't have to worry about it -- >> but it was in shakespeare, you know, so i thought i was a real actor. >> jimmy: that's very good. >> so i just go on naked. >> jimmy: your buddies aren't going to be there. your 8-year-old friends aren't going to be at the west end theater at 8 years old. >> right. no, they won't know. no, they're in bed. they're in bed. >> jimmy: no one's going to make fun of you, yeah. as long as there's no videotape of that, you're all set. >> no, they didn't have iphones then. >> jimmy: they didn't -- exactly. well, now you have the even crazier role playing john lennon. it must have been intimidating. >> i mean, i guess it kind of was.

to begin with, it kind of forced me to do as much research on him as possible, so i kind of knew the boundaries. and playing guitar was fantastic -- >> jimmy: do you sing and play guitar? >> yeah, i didn't, but for the film, i perform and sing, and -- yeah. >> jimmy: oh, so you were learning. >> i was doing "kick ass" at the time, yeah. and i needed to play guitar for the role when i was casting, and jane goldman, actually, she's the writer of "kick ass." she lent me her guitar, and i've never given it back. but -- [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: what was the first song you learned. do you remember that? >> it was probably "that will be the day," buddy holly. i remember that, i guess. >> jimmy: how did you get -- you've got the accent down perfect. again, with the accent with you. you're amazing. yeah, you got the accent. it was like -- [ as john lennon ] "you were talking like john lennon." >> that's all there, yeah. >> jimmy: if i did that, i'd be fired the second day. >> no, that wasn't all bad. not at all. >> jimmy: but you had that liverpudlian accent. >> yeah, i mean, they've all got specific accents. >> jimmy: yeah, john was like,

"quick, talking like this all the time, very fast." and "paul, you know, was very quiet like that, you know." [ laughter ] and "ringo's very deep and peace and love, you know, and very deep, and like that." yeah, so i mean -- i could do ringo or paul, but i probably couldn't do john. but you nailed it. >> well, thank you. >> jimmy: it was fantastic. i mean, and then, did you actually -- was that your voice on the soundtrack when you watch that? or is that some professional singer that you're lip-synching to? >> oh, no, no, no. no, i -- yeah, i had to sing -- >> jimmy: that was you? >> yeah, yeah. i can do, like, john lennon like 60%, you know, like, all right, i just want do the singing or play the guitar. >> jimmy: you did all of it? >> yeah. >> jimmy: god, that's so cool. any beatles fan would love this movie just to see what john's childhood -- if you read about it, it was just -- his childhood, it's tragic, kind of, really. >> yeah, no, it's an emotional journey that we go on. it really shows the story of him as a boy becoming a man and discovering his art form and finding love. and he was torn between his auntie and his mother, and, you know, it's quite a devastating

story. but, you know, it's an insight to him as an artist, you know, that's what -- >> jimmy: yeah, to see how he turned out to be. has paul or ringo seen this? >> yeah, yeah. paul's seen it. i haven't spoken to ringo, but i met paul once. >> jimmy: you can do it right now if you want to. >> you can do -- we can -- [ imitates ringo ] >> jimmy: "i really loved it, it was fantastic. peace and love." >> oh, great man. really. [ imitates ringo ] >> jimmy: "i love the part about peace, and then i really love the part about love." [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] but you talked to paul mccartney? >> yeah, yeah. well, i met paul, and you know, he thought it was great. and he was -- there's only one thing that he said. and he said he couldn't ever i remember john ever punching him in the face. but i mean, that's something you could easily forget. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: i guess so. >> your bandmate punching you in the face. >> jimmy: you don't want to remember anyone punching you in the face, no. >> but, i mean, if that's the only thing and he didn't pick up on anything else that was you know, that severe, and that's where he grew up, and that was the people around -- >> jimmy: it's the ultimate
