we'll do one more here -- the old suggestion box. this last one says, "jimmy, i read a news story this week saying that because of hurricane isaac, a bunch of old tar balls from the bp oil spill are washing up in the gulf coast again. can you sing that protest song you wrong a couple summers ago? sincerely, tracy garner." it's true, back in the summer of 2010, i actually wrong a protest song about the oil spill and all these tar balls that were washing up on the shore. but, you guys probably wouldn't want to hear it, right? i mean -- [ cheers and applause ] you think bp didn't get the message yet? >> i don't think they did. >> jimmy: -- guitar here. so that was a big adventure for me. >> jimmy: taking the bus? >> taking the bus. taking a subway. so we did a lot of bus and subway. >> jimmy: that's what she wanted to do? >> she was happy doing just about anything, really. she likes the carousel in central park. >> jimmy: i know, i saw that photo of her on there. me too, i get a little sick. but i do like doing it, too. but do you take any other mass transportation? a little cab ride? >> we did some cab rides. >> jimmy: that's fun for the babies. >> we don't -- no, 'cause the car seats take so long to go, yeah, not even close. and it takes the car seats in and out. and then the taxi drivers, for the most part, everyone's good. but i had this taxi driver be very threatening. some friends that were gonna drop me off and then drop them off in queens. and he's like, "get out of the car. i don't go to queens." >> jimmy: what? >> and i said, "you can't kick us out of the car." apparently it's against -- >> jimmy: that is illegal. >> illegal. so i call the taxi commission, right? i get his number. >> jimmy: you did? >> i did. >> jimmy: i didn't even know if that number was real. [ laughter ] >> well, it doesn't do much good. so, if anyone from the taxi commission is here. i call -- >> jimmy: yeah, they all watch the show. [ laughter ] he was like, "get out. you're not gonna ever -- no one's ever gonna hear about this, princess." >> jimmy: get lost. i'm not going to queens. >> yes. >> jimmy: you're not allowed to legally do that, though. >> they're not. that's what i told him. >> jimmy: that makes me mad. >> he was unimpressed with my knowledge of the law. and we're trying to help him. >> jimmy: and this is like a serious -- it's almost like starting a religion? you don't actually say that it is, kind of, right? >> yeah. a philosophy, religion, that kind of thing. >> jimmy: yeah. and who do you play? >> i play philip seymour hoffman's wife. so happy. >> jimmy: yeah. >> my fiancee's watching this, he knows i'm obsessed. >> jimmy: he's the raddest. i mean, he's such a good actor. >> i just like to stand behind him and like smell in his essence. you're protected. you feel like you can do anything. >> jimmy: yeah, sure, sure. yeah, that's one way to describe it. yeah, yeah, yeah. it was a close game, though. and i'm so sorry you lost. >> well, i mean, you had a little home court advantage, there. >> jimmy: the elevator bank? >> well, colbert was kind of confusing me. he wanted to know what was coming up on the show and you know. >> jimmy: yeah. well, thank you for coming back. we have -- let's talk about "meet the press." this last sunday was all over the world. it was like crazy quotes because mitt romney misspoke -- should i say? >> well, i mean, i don't know if he misspoke or not. he certainly did make a lot of news. we asked him a lot of detailed questions. we've been trying to get him on the program for a long time. one of the things that came up is, you know, that he wouldn't completely throw obamacare out the window, which is what he's been preparing to do. >> jimmy: he has. >> honest thing to do, so that was -- >> jimmy: it was weird. >> raise a lot of eyebrows, yeah. >> jimmy: he's like -- yeah, he's like, "well, i won't throw all of it away. i like some of the things and" and i was like -- >> i mean, think -- i do think part of it was that he -- he wanted to appeal to be a more middle-of-the-road candidate. i think he's gotten over a lot of pressure right now.

he's still trying to deal with the base but also realizing there's a small band of swing voters who are gonna make up their minds. and they're really hungry for people who are gonna make washington work a little bit better. >> jimmy: and what -- [ applause ] yeah, i mean, sure. >> i mean, you don't have to go far to get that reaction is the reality. >> jimmy: no. but you -- it feels like the gop, for me, like, i don't know if they are really embracing mitt. they're like, "oh, he's our right choice. he's the --" >> you know, there's still a feeling -- after the convention, i talked to a republican who said, "you know, i feel like the republicans are really starting to warm up to romney." and the problem with -- >> jimmy: at this point. >> right, i mean. >> jimmy: you've got to be warm, man. you gotta be hot. >> right. exactly. and i think this is the problem. you know, this was a massachusetts moderate who championed abortion rights until he changed his mind and universal healthcare and then he campaigned as a severe conservative. so, he's still sort of a little bit at a war with himself about how he manages what i think is a much more pragmatic streak as somebody that's -- how he would govern with, you know, all the demands from the republican party. >> jimmy: and he's a good businessman, right? mitt romney.

>> well, there's no question. and people certainly give him high marks on having good ideas about the economy. and a lot of business leaders i talked to say that, as good as the economy may be -- we know it's not good. we know unemployment is high but that the underpinnings of the economy are strong. that, you know, in many ways, a lot of corporate america is waiting for romney to get elected rather than another term of obama. that that may unleash a little bit more progress. that's the view of some. >> jimmy: interesting. that's very good. >> jimmy: i was wondering is how come bill clinton came out for obama and just destroyed and he got rave reviews from both -- from everybody. everyone said, "yeah, you can't really complain." except for that he was long. he just -- [ as clinton ] "just kept on talking." [ laughter ] but then -- where's my man george w. bush? >> president bush has decided that, you know, eight years was enough and he's -- >> jimmy: he's hidin' out? >> no, i mean, he's done. he's done. and i -- you know, i was at a dinner recently with presidents clinton and bush. and i'd covered bush for eight years. and i saw him and we were at dinner there. and he looked over at me and he said -- [ as george w. bush ] "gregory --" he said, "i don't watch you." [ laughter ]

and i said -- >> jimmy: that's a great impression. >> so i said -- i said, "what do you mean?" >> jimmy: [ as george w. bush ] "i don't watch you." >> no, no, no. he said -- [ as george w. bush ] "i never watch you." and i said, "mr. president, weren't you concerned at all about how i was progressing?" he said, "no, no, i wasn't worried about whether you were gonna progress." >> jimmy: really? is that what he said? >> yeah. >> jimmy: [ as george w. bush ] "yeah, i know you gonna do good." >> so i felt a little wounded, frankly. >> jimmy: no, no. you've known him for a long time. >> i did. i covered him for eight years. and, look, i mean, he -- when he was out of the spotlight, he's out of the spotlight. even some of his closest advisers have pushed him a little bit to get back into the fray on issues that he cares about, like education or immigration. but he really hasn't done that. remember, the only way he really endorsed mitt romney was when an elevator was closing and he said -- [ as george w. bush ] "yeah, i'm for romney." >> jimmy: yeah. [ laughter ] [ talking over each other ] >> president clinton is still talking about why -- >> jimmy: the elevator has gone up and down -- he's like -- [ as clinton ] "i think obama's great." [ laughter ] >> but you know clinton -- you know that he's got like a 70% personal approval rating and i -- but i asked romney about this in the interview. do you think he could get

elected? and -- >> jimmy: i mean, really, he's like superman. you feel that way. i mean, he could talk about anything for 30 hours and make you kind of interested. >> kind of, yeah. >> jimmy: he's like -- [ as clinton ] "sitting -- sitting down is great. [ laughter ] i love to sit down but sometimes we need to stand up." and you're like, "yeah!"
