because she was limping. the parents of five other students picked their children up from the accident scene. >> i heard some of the children went to school and some went home. >> how and why this happened remains under investigation. >> police have not had the opportunity to talk with the bus driver. these scarks do lead to the where the bus landed. the bus is equipped with at least one onboard camera which if operating could help explain things. they say getting the vehicle out of the mix of trees and shrubs was a miracle and it was toed to a garage to be thoroughly inspected. the bus driver was in the middle of her route at the time and the students all attend

middle school. school officials sent an alert to all parents. who had the ones children on the bus. >> you're terrified. you're praying your child is ok. >> school officials provided a counselor. wbal-tv 11 news. >> a howard county man is behind bars charged with running a marijuana growing operation out of his home that's also a licensed child care center. >> they say according to detectives this included an elaborate high-intensity lighting and ventilation system to help mask the odor. a grand jury has indicted an attorney on drug-related

charges. one along with 12 others were charged with conspiracy with intent to distribute. confirming prescription pills and heroine and cocaine and guns and other substances were part of this investigating and her 21-year-old son faces the same charges as his mother. >> and a string of commercial armed robberies is being investigated. police say these are responsible for several royal information es and leading to their arrest could receive a reward. >> more chaos in d.c. this morning as fire officials say a man doused himself in gasoline and set himself on fire in a

national mall. bistanders rushed over and used their shirts to put out the flames. he was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. > police say a woman who was was 34. the car chase >> somebody rushed forward and we were told to crouch behind cars and then sent back into the building. >> behind the wheel 34-year-old miriam cary of stamford, connecticut shot and killed by police after crashing into a barricade. her 1-year-old daughter unharmed in the car. >> the white house said president obama was never in any danger.

law enforcement sources say miriam made delusional statements about the president and said he was communicating with her. her mother says she was suffering from post partum depression and neighbors say she seemed ok. >> just snapped. >> back at the capitol they say they praised the police response including one of the injured officers. >> he is expected to make a full recovery. >> according to majority leader reid the police officer is a 23-year veteran of the force and the other is a secret service officer and we're told he is fine. wbal-tv 11 news. >> meanwhile the victim's two

the rain chance will be better up to the north where that main force is. for us just a stray chance we could see showers into the region. let's take a look at 4 it right now. you can see we have those showers trying to push into westminster right now. most of it is to the north of us only seeing a few clouds but there's a lot going on in the atmosphere just out in the west a low pressure system dumping snow into the city. and a nice little rain/snow line. here's the front that is associated with it and that will be pushing into our direction monday and monday afternoon. at the same time watching out for the remnants of tropical storm karen and we will see our rain chances increase monday into tuesday. temperatures 39 degrees and ahead of it ewe will still be considered the warm part of the

storm because we have temperatures around 70 in atlanta and in parts of virginia at this hour as well. so 68 at the airport this morning and 73 in downtown baltimore. and the temperature is now 64 in the parkton area. winds right now coming from the north and west and we have calm winds at ocean city at this hour. 85 the day expect highs 84- and winds around five miles an hour. here's your day planner. 87 by 4:00 p.m. this afternoon with partly sunny skies and on the bay you will find the winds coming from the west about five norths. 7:58 p.m. will be high tide. let's talk about tropical storm

karen barely holding on to the tropical storm status. 2340eur tracking 40 mile-per-hour winds. the winds have not been favorable in the atmosphere for her to grow. she has weakened substantially. let's look at our rain chances. we can see this is 6:00 p.m. in the afternoon and some stray showers look like they could head our way. but to the north of us they will have the better chance. and we don't really get lammed until monday or tuesday when the front makes it in and the remnants of karen pushing their way through as well. this is what will be heading in our direction. moderate to heavy rain will be possible until this system and to see the rain amount to one inch possible between monday and tuesday as we will have our main rain event out there. so we'll get you temperatures in your seven-day forecast and looking like we'll see temperatures in the 70's over the next several days and 80's

around the 89-degree mark for some regions. >> well, maryland's new traffic laws went into effect four days ago and officers set up check points while enforcing the new seatbelt laws. you cannot use hand held devices at all and passengers and vehicles must use seatbelts. >> where as before it was not a primary offense basically when an officer made a car stop and now when an officer sees an individual either not wearing their seatbelt or utilizing a hands-free device they can be stopped based on that. >> drivers will be fined $75 for the first offense and $175 for each offense after the second. and anyone without a seatbelt

already dealing with more than 10 inches of snow. as you might expect there are many power outages as you might expect and winter has also come arlingly south dakota. three feet of snow fallen in parts of south dakota and thousands have lost power. >> good morning. so glad to have you with us. we are starting off with some clouds out there this morning. we've got the clouds pushing in from the north as we have a little stationary front draped just to the north out there. some of those are trying to to make their way into the westminster area. for the most part just a few clouds. all of the action is out west. we have this strong low pressure system associated with the cold front and look at it

just dumping snow along rapid city and seeing snow out there. they are dealing with some cold parts of the storm. temperatures around, 35. ahead of it, we're still in a warm sector. temperatures around the 70's in atlanta and other states along the earn sea board there. 73 in downtown baltimore and temperatures are right around 61 degrees out in ocean city. for today, brace yourself for another hot one with temperatures between 84 and 89 degrees. a little bit of fog is possible this morning but otherwise we'll see partly sunny skies and stray shower. we're up to 76 by 10:00 a.m. and 87 degrees by 4:00 p.m. this weevepk partly sunny skies in place. waves will be at one foot or less and west winds at five norths and we could really use

some raindrops, but didn't squeeze out anything officially yesterday for october we'll get a big fat zero there as well. look at how far below we are from precipitation. five inches below where we should be, so any little drops around here would certainly help out a lot. 5.11 to be exact, but you get the idea. here's tropical storm karen barely holding on to tropical storm status. she is packing 40 mile-per-hour winds and the wind environment sheer, going in different directions not conducive to get that hurricane going so she is really struggling right now as she makes her way near the gulf coast moving north and northwest. you can see at 58 p.m. there's a potential for stray showers, maybe one popping up here. and the same scenario tomorrow but monday and attitudes will

be a better chance to see the rain and remnants of karen could move into the region along with this front we see moving in from the west. that will see the rain chances increasing for us as well. we will have the temperatures that will be staying right in the mid to upper 80's for today and tomorrow and then monday we'll see temperatures around the mid 70's. tuesday we will have temperatures in the lower 70's with the temperatures in the low to mid 70's for the rest of the week. >> thank you, mary, well, it'sal october. if u ready to get a little bit spooked, you don't have to look very far. the edgar alan poe house has already been re-opened. the national historic landmark closed to the public last year because of different issues with the city but now it's under new leadership and the non-profit poe baltimore has taken over the reigns now run the house through volunteers

we worked with him for 23 years. larry passed away suddenly last thursdays but not before his mission to fight hunger raised money and food help feed needy families in maryland. while some see maryland as one of the richest states in the nation larry saw many going hungry and ran non-profits to help fill the shelves of the maryland food bank and those in the surrounding counties. stuentsd in 300 schools across the state. aarp most recently joined the fight and awarded larry their highest community service award. all came together as we remember larry adams as a father and husband and grandfather and friend we will all miss dearly.

86 along the eastern shore and 8 in southern maryland. we'll talk about when our next cold front will come through and closer look at tropical storm karen in your insta-weather plus forecast. >> our story is a follow-up to that deadly fiery crash that killed three you know what i mean baltimore city and this morning the family of one of those killed is upset with the police commissioner and the mayor. george lettis explains. > angle chiwengo will be tried rest saturday but her family can't find out rest what they claim is a lack of communication between they and city hall after a police chase that may or may not have been active killed at the time. >> he could have reached out and showed some type of sympathy and humanity and compassion to the innocent

victims. >> chiwengo's brother-in-law said they had arranged for the secretary to have the police commissioner come by and speak with the family. >> we wanted to know how he felt about it without cameras or anything. so we didn't contact anyone but him. he didn't show up. >> chiwengo's family also hoped the hear from mayor stephanie rawlings-blake. they didn't. when we told the mayor we were doing this story, she emailed us this statement. my heart anxious as they say goodbye tomorrow. i can imagine their frustration in wanting answers they have regarding the details of this devastating accident. the police department is working closely with the state's the office determine exact my what happened that night. as i have said previously this is a top priority for the

commissioner and myself but we must allow the investigation to run its course. >> here's his reaction after we showed him email. >> we would haval appreciate or could have appreciated something like that. >> angel's sister said she spoke to the lone survivor of the crash, andrew baker. he has been released from the hospital and he told her he remembers very little about the crash. >> at police headquarters, george lettis, wbal-tv 11 news. >> a 73-year-old woman is dead after a two-vehicle crash in gap bills -- in gambrills. they say cell lest lockton was exiting a ramp when she crossed into the path of an s.u.v. the driver of the successful as you and her passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. >> well, the school day got off to a frightening start when 10

temperatures right around 6 is degrees in ocean city. so cooler there. brace yourselves for another unseasonably warm day with temperatures between 84 and 8t degrees. temperatures at 8 miles an hour. day planner showing 76 by 10:00 a.m. and 87 degrees by 4:00 p.m. with partly sunny skies continuing for us. today we are well above average. we should be at 70. temperatures up to 87 and that's about 17 degrees above where we should be. but if you don't like this warm weather a cold front is on the way and on the base day, winds about five norths. high tide at 7:08 and 7:58 p.m. as well. the ravens taking on the dolphins tomorrow. they will find 35% chance of showers with temperatures between 3-86 degrees.

>> welcome back. it's time for 11 fitness and here from the maryland athletic club, good morning. >> thank you for having me. >> you're going to talk about how to get the most out of your strength training workout. >> three things you need to remember when coming up with your resistance training workout is muscles is what burns calories so a lot of

people think they have to start with cardio but they are not maintaining muscles which burn calories. >> how many days a week should you lift? >> in the beginning two times a week is plenty then the split is important. so what are you doing those two days? a lot of people think upper body one day and lower body the next. in reality you end to lose muscle after 72 hours of training so if you're just hitting the muscle twice a week you're not maximizing. so the best is to do a full body resistance training workout both days until you're ready for the third day a week to throw that in there. >> these are things you can do in the gym or at home. >> exactly. so all you really need is a chair and some lighter dumbbells to get started. this is a very beginner workout. first we have eight-pound

dumbbells. start with three-pound or five-pound dumbbells. if eight is intimidating, start out with three or five but it's important to increase your weight. so a full-body. going to be a squat and press. you're using all the muscles of the body. into straight down. come up and press. come straight down. up and press. >> how many should you do? >> start with 12-15 and if last three to four repetitions should be difficult. if you made it through 12-15, and it was easy, you need to increase your weight a little bit. >> and at that pace? >> yes. this looks easy then when you go to do it, it's a lot more difficult. >> make sure you're not using a chair that rolls. this is a single-leg squat.

start with four feet hip-length apart. start with the seated position and stand up with one. ly start with my left. >> if you need help, you can put that right toe on the ground. you don't want to use the other leg or swing around. so if you can, don't use it at all. just stand up and sit down and you're not throwing yourself back in the schaefer. back in the chair. >> 15 in a row. you can do this in your office. that's one-leg. >> glutes, quads, a lot of balance and core. >> that's going to hit your lower body. >> our next. pushup. quite a few options. i would have everybody start from the knees, hands directly below the shoulders, elbows pointing back as low as you can go comfortable. we don't want to see this.

and the aarp awarded larry their highest community service award. we will always remember larry not only as a husband, father and grandfather but a wonderful man that we will all miss dearly.

fiery crash that killed three people. that may have involved a police pursuit. >> today the victims family is upset. george lettis explains why. >> angel chiwengo will be laid to rest saturday but their family cannot put to the rest lack of communication between the police and city hall after two weeks after a fiery crash killed chiwengo that police may or may not have been chasing at the time. >> even if the police department is or is not responsible he could have reached out and shown some type of humanity. >> the family arranged police w the police commissioner's secretary to have him come by the house and speak with the family. >> we wanted to know how he felt about it without cameras or anything. so i didn't contact anyone.

he didn't show up or call. no one from his office called or showed up. >> chiwengo's family also hoped the hear from marianne banister mayor. they never did. when we told the mayor's office we were doing this story, they emailed us this on her behalf. >> this is a tragic loss of life and my heart anxious as they say goodbye tomorrow. i can imagine their frustration n wanting answers to questions regarding this devastating accident. the police department is working closely with tulle determine what happened. as i said, that is top priority for commissioner batch and myself. we must athrow investigatory process to run its course. here's his reaction after we showed him the email. >> we would have have and could have appreciated something like that. >> angel's sister tells us she

spoke to the lone survivor of the crash, andrew baker. he has been released from the hospital and he told her he remembers very little about the crash. at police headquarters, george lettis, wbal-tv 11 news. >> a 73-year-old woman is dead after a two-vehicle crash in gambrills. it happened friday afternoon southbound route 3 south of the route 32 overpass. they say celeste lofton was exiting a ramp when she crossed into the path of an s.u.v. the driver of the s.u.v. and her passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. >> and a school bus with 10 students onboard ran off greenspring avenue and rolled into a ditch. david collins with more on what happened. >> this is part of the crash debris. the crash looks horrific. frightening. thankfully in this case, looks

are deceiving. emergency sirens screamed mass casualties. a baltimore county school bus with 10 children onboard swerved off greenspring avenue landing in a ditch on its side. according to sources familiar with the crash scene, the driver, a woman said to be 50 irv got all the kids out safely through an emergency escape hatch in the roof. >> we basically had some students that were shaken up essentially. had a few minor injuries, abrasions, cuts, bruises, that type of thing. >> sorlses familiar with the crash scene believe she injured her right leg because she was limping. they transported her to the sinai trauma center. the parents of five students picked their their kids up from the accident scene. >> i heard a couple kids did go to school and some of the children went home. >> how and why this happened remains under investigation.

police have not had an opportunity to talk with the bus driver. whether these skid marks are part of the accident is not determined but they do lead to the spot where the bus went off the road. also a mystery is how the bus ended up 180 degrees facing the opposite direction it was going. and they say getting the vehicle out of the mix of trees and shrubs was short of a miracle and the bus was toed to a garage to be thoroughly inspected. the bus driver was in the middle of her route at the time of the accident. the students ages 11-14 all attend pikesville middle school. school officials sent out an alert to all parents. webbedy says receiving even that was frightening. >> your heart is in your throat. you're terrified and praying your child is ok.

>> good morning. we're starting off with a few high clouds out there. we will see them throughout day a nice little mix of sun and clouds and we also had some stray showers pop up around westminster. some of them tried to move into belair as well. we have a stationary front with a mix of warmer and cooler air around the pennsylvania area. that will kick a few showers in our direction. most of us should stay dry but our neighbors out west are being hit with early winter. low pressure just working

around the region and packing some really cold air. look at the temperatures behind that front. 31 in parts of colorado. 44 as far down south as new mexico. 37 up north but ahead of that we are in what's considered the warm sector. ahead of the cooler air before it makes its way in so right now closer to the region. 67 at the airport and around ocean city temperatures at 63 degrees at this time. here's what we are expecting today. temperatures between 84 and 89, partly sunny with a stray shower possible. winds coming in at about 8 miles per hour. your game planner 76. 87 degrees by 4:00 p.m. this evening with partly sunny skies. we are well above average, people. 70 degrees are our average. 7 is our forecasted high. 17 degrees above where we should be out there.

on the bay today, west winds at about five norths. high tide will be 7:58 p.m. the ravens taking on the dolphins in miami. partly cloudy skies with temperatures between 83-86 degrees. thundershowers in miami are expected but hopefully it will trail off before the game. >> now tropical storm karen barely holding on to her tropical storm stath us the. some of the problems with karen are 2007 center of low pressure here but the stronger thunderstorms are about 80 miles away from her. you kind of need those to come together to get things going for that hurricane. also, she is not in a great wind environment. the winds are what we call sheer, so they are going in different directions. that doesn't help her as well but when she is done with the gulf she is expected to move

her remnants in our direction which could grease our rain chances in the coming days. we have showers here associated with a cold front that will be coming in 9:00 a.m. sunday and this is going to be the remnants of karen. you will notice she will be around the atlantic area and moving our direction in the coming days. so a quick look at the seven-day. 86 tomorrow with slight rain chances. >> well, you've witnessed him sprint towards the finish line in the preakness and the belmont. >> but after achieving that victory for many horses involved their future is pretty questionable. how some are making use in al second career is stuart pittman. how are things going on at pimlico? >> they are going to show us what else they can do besides racing. >> what exercises will they be show casing today? >> we have horses playing polo

of confidence is typically a big sign. >> so signs your child needs tutoring help, the teacher expresses some concern. >> the teacher is the one with your child day in and day out, you want to pay attention. they will see behavioral changes and frustrations and drops in grades. >> you mentioned loss of confidence. is that expressed in, well, i can't do this. >> that's typically what you see, i don't want to. i can't attitude coming into play. they start negative self talk getting down on themselves. those are big flags. >> how about if they are there for hours and hours trying to do something. >> that's what we hear is homework is turning into a three-hour or four-hour or five-hour eventual every night. it could mean the work is too difficult for them and you may

need to look at getting outside help. >> many will also tell you homework should take this amount of time. 70 minutes a night or 10 minutes, so you should be able to get an idea from the teacher. >> absolutely. >> changes in attitudes and behaviors? >> a lot of times you will see that they are distracted and unfocused and they get that unwillingness to try. we have to pay attention to behaviors as symptoms and not the cause of the bigger issue. >> and family stress, how does that contribute? >> when you're spending four-five hours a night it leads to more frustration for the parntsde then the child and it's a cycle. sometimes you need to take a step back and get some outside help. >> and i think there's always one parent that's better at it. >> and i think there's always i was not the patient one. you have to figure out which

parent is best for helping out with the homework. >> yes, family dynamic plays a part but at the end of the day they are still mom and dad so sometimes you need to take a step back. >> and huntington learning center is a great place to look for that outside help. >> yes. >> dr. kim hammond when we come back, with your pet questions. but first here's a look at what's going on around town.

pincher and every time she poops, she turns around and eats it. i try giving her fecal medicine. what causes a dog to eat her sneeshes and my sister's dog does the same thing. >> first of all, let me address the discussion about if she is giving a product that doesn't work. >> if you read the directions on that product it's really just msg believe it or not. you have to give it each time the dog eats so if you give a treat or snack you've got have that product and it's got to be a full dose. the idea that it tastes pretty good coming in but doesn't afterwards so -- >> so it gives them a bad taste association? >> yes. >> you would think it would be bad tasting enough but why do they do it? >> but the point is she may have the right product but not using it properly. so the other thing is this -- one thing about this.

suppose the dog has worms and is eating its own poop. the short answer to a short question is, physically, prevent your dog from eating its poop. you see it pooping. take it away. because dogs do that. >> yes, you have to do that. >> but it is a real serious problem. >> ok. i just got a new puppy and my guests -- my friend suggested i micro chip it. >> if you have a new animal, this may be the single most important thing you do besides vaccination. >> we have a lot of animals that have gotten lost. mike chipping is a small tchape goes under skin and over the back and any dog or cat that runs away, wherever it goes, the pound or spca, they come home. if you don't have your animal mike chipped, get it mike rowe chipped. >> and it's not very expensive?

>> yes, but losing your dog? >> it's like $20-$40. >> i would get my dog micro chipped before i did anything else. it gags is healthy and and throws up after it eats. >> first make sure your animal is is not sick. go to your veterinarian and get blod work, x-ray, physical exam but then eliminate vary i can't believes and sometimes the reats are bad so go on hills or science diet generally they will be fine. >> stay with us. you're watching 11 news saturday morning.

employees. the number of workers affected increase each week. if a shutdown continues. lockheed-martin is based in bethesda and has facilities around. >> the national aquarium despite the name "national" is open for business, because it receives no federal funding. the re-booking of field trips because of closures in d.c., and phones ringing off the hook at the zoo in maryland for the same reason. you can see a list of the freebies being offered to furloughed government workers by businesses and restaurants in the area and you can click the link at the top of our homepage at www.wbaltv.com to see who still gets paid while the government is shut down.

>> in montana it's starting to look like christmas. in western montana they are already dealing with more than 10 inches of snow. as you might expect at least here are many power outages. in colorado even though the leaves have not fallen off trees, the wintry weather has arrived. as much as three feet of snow has fall engine south dakota and downed and snapped power lines has also caused power outages. >> and the remnants of tropical storm karen could beal affecting parts of louisiana today. >> good morning. a beautiful sunrise with a few high clouds out there. we will see a nice of sun and

clouds. we can see that men fasting on satellite radar. thanks to disturbance to our north area as well. that is moving into the region. we see the warm and cooler air draped spilling a few clouds in our direction and it's eastbound sparked a few showers out there. westminster saw a brief shower pass through and belair looks like they have maybe some drizzle moving through the area. the rest of us are pretty dry and we will only have a chance for stray showers. when looking at a strong low pressure system with really cold air associated with a look at behind in the low 30's. we are in the warm section of this system. so we have our temperatures that will be above average, temperatures in the 60's ahead of that front. it is 67 at the airport right now and 74 in downtown baltimore.

17 degrees above average. we should be at 70, instead we will be between 84-89. southwest winds eight to 10 miles an hour. 83 by noon and 87 degrees by 4:00 p.m. this evening. winds on the bay from five norths. 1-foot waves are possible. ravens taking on the 2k068 ince in miami tomorrow. partly cloudy skies with temperatures between 83 and 86 degrees. there will be a 30% chance for showers. now we turn our attention to tropical storm karen. moving to the north at about 10 miles an hour and the remnants for cary could come in our direction and give us a higher chance for showers. this will be the remnants of karen moving her way around the atlanta area. let's keep our eyed on it as it

moves to the north and gives us increased rain chances. looks like we will get a nice soaking there tuse into 7:00 a.m. looks like we will still have the showers going. as you look at the seven-day forecast, temperatures around 87 today, 86 sunday. a stray shower possible. for the most part staying dry. we're 73 tuesday with another 60% chance for showers and few isolated thunderstorms. >> have you ever heard of a spinal compression fracture? they are fairly common especially as people get older. most of the time they can heal without the need for surgery. >> judith gunnery was trying to corral her dog when she fell. >> i went flat on my back and i never knew such pain.

i went to the emergency room and they told me i had a compression fracture of l-1. >> this is an image of what a typical l-1 fracture looks like. at first she was given pain medication and advised to rest but when her spine wouldn't heal she decided to try surgery. the doctor performed percu taniuos surgery. >> it's cement that stabilizes the fracture so there's no more micro movement of the bone. the doctor says in most cases surgery is not necessary. >> we can manage patients who suffer with conservative care but when conservative care fails and pain is overwhelming and debilitating to the patient, then this can be a good option assuming all the puzzle pieces fit and it's the

right clinical choice. >> the surgery was quick and she felt better right away. >> i could feel relief from it. it was probably instant really ,if i could say, because the bone was strong again. >> that's one of the most graphing things with this procedure is often as soon as they emerge from anesthesia their back pain can be gone if not significantly improved. >> and dr. maine joins us now with more information. good morning. >> good morning. >> who typically has these kinds of fractures? >> the most common presentation is an elderly woman as you get older if you develop osteoporosis, the incidents can be quite common. >> sometimes they are completely a-symptom atic. sometimes they result in

hospital admissions and sometimes heamp breathing. >> so what can we do to prevent this? >> i think general maintenance of your health care, seeing your doctor, being educated on he causes of osteoporosis. >> we were talking about building bone early on. that's why it's so important for young girls to do exercise because it helps early on? >> lightweights, all that is important for bone over the and to try decrease the zone of osteoporosis. >> but this is an option that people do have. >> it's an option for treatment. it's all about selecting the right patient and if they have severe pain and the x rays all meet up, you can often help them tremendously and it can be quite instainous. >> thank you. >> you can call 1-800-md mercy
