why gl and welcome back a live look this morning down at hampden on 34th street. the festival of lights the one block all lit up for the holidays. go down check that out. and we will have live reports trout throughout the course of the morning. news time 6:13 and winter storm that blasted across the western u.s. now moving east. just in time for the holiday travel rush. abc's paul has the latest from new york. >> reporter: winter doesn't officially begin until tomorrow. but this morning, across the great plains and southwest, people are digging out. after a blizzard blanketed the region with up to two feet of snow. parts of kansas got half their annual snowfall in just one storm. fierce winds and icy roads made

driving dangerous. whiteout conditions shutting down interstates leaving people stranded for hours. >> it went from rain to sleet to snow and by the time we hit kansas, it was really crazy i slid up off the immediatean and was there for hours. took me three hours to get 30miles. >> reporter: even the contacti were covered where more than two feet piled up in new mexico. all the state he's major highways were closed after an accident left four people dead. in texas and colorado, the national guard was called in to make rescues as 911 was swamped with calls. but one call brought happy news. a police officer in new mexico reports a baby born on the road. >> there's a motorists stuck in my location and female passenger delivered a baby. >> reporter: the system is moving east dumping heavy rain from texas to new england. and up to a foot more snow in the rockies. later in the week, another storm could mean a white christmas for parts of the

easton and ocean city. southern maryland pax weather at 55. warm air from the south and it's going reach us. so we start mid-40s this morning. most of us try. there are showers out there, but i wanted to highlight the majority of the area where i think it moves in later this morning so by lunchtime if you have plans outside, you might need the rain gear carry it with you. but better chance of rain this afternoon and thunderstorms could mix in towards evening and notice temperatures reached the peak at 60. here's general setup. we have a very active flow here. and it's been this conveyor belt of moisture similar to the last storm pattern two weeks ago where the storm track passes north and west. and we stay on the warmer side with the moisture with the warm air and we will get that funneling out of the gulf of mexico reaching not carolina and charlotte and that heads in the direction with a band of rain stretching through virginia. no doubt it's going to get wet. but middle waves low pressure propagate along the front as the front slides to the east. we will get the passage of the

cold front but the main general pattern still to our west, still energy northern mexico and a lot of cold air back here across the northern plains. and just waiting to dive out of central canada. the pattern is set up to give us something. computer models seem to have lost the identity of the storm developing over the holiday weekend. but it's just starting to come back. we will get to that in a moment. this initial storm brings us heavier rain this afternoon and thunder mixed in and heading in through thursday and friday, another round of rain. two days near 60. the bottom is going to fall out. we will reach 54 on friday when the rain comes to evened in the morning. saturday right now an about face but looks good for the ravens game 45. and we develop the southern storm with the cold air in place and it does appear at least a higher chance tee wee get some snow as we head in through christmas day and snow showers and colder temperatures into early next week. so there is hope out there. 6:17 let's remind you that you can get the abc 2 weather app go online or go through your

ipad or your iphone or the interactive radar and, of course, you can get our streaming video as well. here angela with traffic>> reporter: on the roadways right now, not a lot to complicate the morning drive. pretty good driving conditions for the most part. some usual delays. let's check your drive on i-95. we are seeing sluggish traffic making the way through the columbia region southbound. also northbound on 95 as you head into baltimore, a bit heavy around 695 and look at 95 and 395, all your interchanges are clear of incidents and flowing freely but minor delays and your drive times. sluggish to the top side of the beltway on southbound 59 about 7 minutes now from white marsh boulevard. charley, over to you. health news it's estimated by the year 2050, 1/3 of americans will have diabetes. according to the national institutes of health it affects more than 25 million people vairying a ages and many -- varying ages and many americans

know little about it. first off only heavy people have diabetes is not true. >> people that are thin or just a little bit overweight can have diabetes. >> and another myth is a bad diee is the major cause of the disease. that's he not necessarily true. lack of exercise and family history can also play a part. a new study finds a surprising number of police officers are not getting a good night's sleep. researchers screened 5,000 police officers for the study and found that nearly 40% had some form of a sleep disorder. the most common is obstructive sleep apnea affecting 1 out of 3 officers and that study's author says threap sleep disorders put them at a greater ris to beingmake his takes when on job. >> they show symptoms consistent with one sleep disorder were at high risk for depression, anxiety disorders, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and a number of other adverse conditions. >> the author of the study says

vote. that's the big question. things are at a standstill. again, no compromise and no word if a vote will happen before the end of the year. come january 1st, if lawmakers can't work out a deal, you will see less money in your paycheck. if you may $50,000 a year, you will lose a thousand dollars from your paycheck. if you make 35,000 a year, you will see a 700 dollar tax increase. house republicans are at a stand off with leaders in the democratic controlled senate. they refuse to vote on the senate's version to extend the payroll tax cut for two months. house law makeers were sent home for the holiday break while the stalemate continues. >> enough is enough. the arrogance of this place is outstanding and unbelievable. you have to look at what we are talking about from the eyes of our constituents and the people back home two months of centery for people when it -- centery

accurate by weatherate. we have a 50 spot in arnold and upper 40s from ellicott city to sparrows point. we have eastern shore warm air surging on the other side of the chesapeake with 55 in centerville. rain extreme lower portion of the eastern shore. this is south of cambridge heading on 50 through salisbury and bands of rain showers mainly in the north side. we have the heavier stuff up north of joshing and pennsylvania. while we watch the regional perspective we are considering this area of low pressure riding to the north and pulling in the tropical moisture and this will fill in a little more throughout the day. the air will stabilize a little bit and pumping up the warm moist air we could develop rumbles of thunder but it's the matter that we should probably have some steadier rains not the showers that burst for half- hour at a time. but hours on end of rain expected developing heading into the afternoon and we will deal with that boundary that tries to push through during the evening itself. overall we could expect rumble of thunder when the heavy stuff

comes through. late afternoon and through the evening, tapering down overnight a dry day tomorrow and neck round of rain thursday night through early friday morning. that's a 3 a.m. time stamp so by daybreak that next push could be gone. and then we start taking down the temperatures, and then we could have one final wave riding up the coast and that storm on christmas day could have snow with it. 60 today. we will push that warm temperature. late in the afternoon to the evening. and when the heaviest of the rain should occur and it will likely be be rumble of thunder that tapered down overnight and look for 48. temperatures back to knee 60 tomorrow pushing into the 50s on friday. again that rain ends in the morning. and saturday ravens game dry look for the chance of snow on christmas.
