the man accused in the navy yard shooting lied when applying for security clearance. according to cnn, government background checkers knew this... but did not tell the navy. when aaron alexis enlisted in 2007, he answered "no" to questions about whether he was ever arrested.

that was a lie... three years earlier he was arrested and charged for shooting out tires on a construction worker's vehicle... he called that incident an anger-fueled blackout. the report given to the navy simply stated alexis deflated the tires, and no gun was involved. alexis is accused of killing 12 people at the washington navy yard last week. one week after 13 people die during the navy yard shooting in washington d.c. one survivor is speaking to us about his grief and his guilt. last monday navy commander tim jirus evacuated building 197 when shots rang out. the man standing next to him dropped to the ground dead. that victim was kenneth proctor a mantainence man at the base. "its just rough, again i have a little bit of guilt about this situation and what went down.. so i live with that.. i try not to let it cloud my judgements every day and drive the way i feel every day.. i still have a job to do" building 197 remains part of the federal

democratic hopeful for governor is kicking off his bus tour today. attorney general doug gansler is launching a 17- stop tour in his campaign. starting this morning in rockville the tour will go through ellicott city before ending the first day in baltimore. gansler is challenging lt. governor anthony brown and heather mizeur for the nomination.

all three democratic candidates for maryland governor come out swinging... trying to convince a crowd they are the right person for the job. the three spoke in front of the maryland state and washington d-c building and construction trades council. they focused on what they've accomplished for the state so far... and talked about what they want to do in the future. on the other side of the ticket... republican candidates include harford county executive david craig... state delegate ron george... former chairman of the charles county republican central committee, charles loller... and businessman, brian vaeth. lieutenant governor anthony brown picks up another endorsement. representative john sarbanes is backing brown for governor. he's the fourth of maryland's eight representatives to announce his support for brown.

sarbanes' district includes parts of anne arundel, baltimore, howard and montgomery counties... and baltimore city. a spooky statistic for retailers... the national retail federation says americans will spend less on halloween this year. the survey shows that people who celebrate the holiday are expected to spend 75 dollars on costumes, decorations and candy. that's down from the approximately 80 bucks the average american spent last year. still... the survey shows more than seven in ten halloween participants will hand out candy, which will bring in more than two billion dollars in sales. one new jersey town... is spooking little ids everywhere... by canceling halloween! in gloucester township... the council approved a resolution asking parents to restrict halloween activities to private parties.. and not to allow children to trick or treat. and if they do go door to door they ask the kids to be home by 7 p-m. nat sound: "it's for the safety of the community not only for the children but for the adults, the houses." nat sound: "when

we are following breaking news out of northeast baltimore. three people are dead and another is in critical condition after a car crash at york road and northern parkway. it happened just before 12-30 this morning... as police were attempting to make a traffic stop. officer say the driver of a honda speed

off... sparking a chase. the car eventually hit a jeep... headed east on northern parkway. in: as a result 2 individuals out: local hospital the names of the victims haven't been released a few hours earlier... there was another deadly crash... this time in southeast baltimore. this photo is from the scene... underneath the o'donnell street overpass at south haven street. police were called to the area around 7 o'clock last night. they say the 51- year-old driver of a toyota s-u- v... crashed into the bridge abutment. he later died at the hospital. the cause of remains under

investigation. a virginia beach child isn't going to school today... because of something he did at home. 12-year-old khalid caraballo's school district suspended him... and may even expel him for a year... for shooting an airsoft gun on his family's private property. a neighbor saw him and his friends using the pellet guns in an "airsoft gun" war... they shot at each other, but no one was hurt. his school district said the investigation found khalid and his friends were firing near the bus stop... which is against the law. the pre-teen says that wasn't the case... and explained why his suspension is unfair. "because we were in our yard this had nothing to do with school. i didn't have anything of this at school. anytime." "he disobeyed me and that is a home issue its not a home issue because he won't be doing it again and like he said he will never do this ever again." the part of the

law khalid definitely broke was getting his motr's permission to use the gun. the school district has a hearing scheduled to discuss whether khalid and his friend should be expelled. bank of america is ordered to pay almost two point two million dollars for racial discrimination. the case involved more than eleven hundred african-american job seekers at the bank's facility in charlotte, north carolina. the judge ordered the bank to pay back wages and interest for race-based hiring discrimination. the ruling awards more than 960- thousand dollars to just over a thousand applicants in 1993 and more than one-point-two million dollars to 113 people rejected between 2002 and 2005. 19 new york businesses are fined... for posting fake online reviews. the attorney general's office just completed a year-long investigation into the companies. they're accused of using made-up profiles... or paying others to post deceptive ratings on sites like "yelp" and "city search" to

boost sales. doctors and dentists and clinics that deal with health issues like weight loss, this can be very dangerous, this is not just a matter of fraud this is a matter of public safety. the companies were all fined between 25- hundred and 100-hundred thousand dollars. more hostess- brand favorites are back on store shelves. drake's cakes made their sweet comback yesterday. this means ring dings... devil dogs... yodels... and coffee cakes are now available once again. the treats disappeared from grocery stores last year when hostess went out of business. mc-kee foods, which makes little debbie cakes, bought the drake's cakes brand. an oregon man finds a sweet surprise inside a box of cookies... beyond the treats themselves. when he opened the box... the man discovered a 100-dollar bill stuffed inside. at first... he thought it was some kind of mistake... so he went back to the walmart where he bought it... and grabbed another box.

baltimore raven... jacoby jones... is recovering from a bloody head injury. according to t- m-z... jones was hurt outside a d-c night club... by a stripper. coach john harbaugh says jacoby jones is doing quote... fine... after being hit in the hit head with a champagn bottle by a stripper named sweet pea. according to tmz... jones was hurt during a birthday celebration for ravens teammate... bryant mckinnie. it happened just before 3 o'clock monday morning... when they all boarded a party bus... and the celebration turned into a brawl. that's when sweet pea reportedly hit jones in the head with the bottle. all of this in redskins territory... but football fans pretty much everywhere are talking about the ravens' pro bowl player. incue: a can't believe outcue: quite interesting incue: well i think's interesting outcue: strippers and such we are told

jones did show up at practice yesterday. he's actually rehabbing an injury from the first game. orioles third baseman manny machado is expected to undergo an m-r-i today... after being seriously injured in the 7th inning of monday's game against the tampa bay rays. machado's leg appeared to buckle as he ran to first... and he went down screaming in pain. he was carted off the field and taken to a hospital in st. petersburg. at minimum... he's out for the rest of the season. researchers in london believe they've created a "blueprint" for a universal flu vaccine. investigators collected blood samples from more than 300 people during the 2009 h1-n1 flu pandemic. they found those who had a

type of t-cell called c-d-8 were more likely to avoid serious illness. scientists say this means a vaccine designed to increase those t-cell levels may be more effective at preventing the flu virus than conventional methods. the vaccine should be available in five years. and here's an and here's an incentive to get hitched... it could improve your chances of surviving if you ever get cancer. research published in the journal of clinical oncology looked at more than 700- thousand people diagnosed with the most deadly cancers. researchers found patients who were married were more likely to detect the disease early... receive treatments that could potentially cure them... and live longer. patients with a partner were 20-percent less likely to die when compared to unmarried patients. scientists believe social support led to better survival rates. a serviceman -- killed in action during world war two -- wrote a letter to a daughter he never got to meet. now... nearly 70 years later.... she is opening them for the first time.
