philadelphia. so chester county, parts of berks county, now lancaster county, up in the poconos we've seen it for a while. this is where we see the snow. so i'm going to zoom in here to parts of chester, berks and lancaster kthscounties. blue around west caln is light snow falling. pink, rain/snow mix. the green, light rain. across 76 through parts of chester county and into parts of lancaster county, that is where we're seeing snow falling here. this is mostly on the lighter side. in this area of chester county, higher elevation have been seeing the snow falling pretty steadily for a while. 0.04 an inch, precip rate per hour. we will continue to watch this as with go through the next few hours. this area of moisture extends and continues to get colder. as we go into parts of berks county. right near robson, 0. 04 inch per hour. it's still falling at a fairly light pace. but it is still continuing to sit in the same area. so grassy accumulations are expected in some parts of 0.04

still around reading. we're continuing to see the light rain, or light snow i should say falling there. light rain not too far away, though, on the outskirts of where you see the snow. rain/snow mix through part of the area as well. through the allentown area, we have reports of light snow falling but it's really the poconos we have also been watching for quite a while. the higher elevations here have seen pretty steady snowfall for quite a while. so in the poconos, still some light snow falling, but, again, pretty steady for quite a while, so we could see an inch or so accumulating in the poconos. again, those areas north and west as temperatures drop will continue to see some of the rain changes over to snowfall. around the philadelphia area, this is where we just see some very cold rain falling. so as we go through the rest of tonight, the areas seeing the snow since temperatures are dropping off couldz:$ñ be seein some light accumulation on grassy surfaces. the temperatures, those are definitely something we're watching right now. as far as the timing is concerned, too. standing by is chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz with a lock at that. glenn? >> yeah, sheena, we look at

different things in the wintertime than we do the rest of the year as far as telling how heavy snow is, for example. we have to look at the visibility. that tells us how heavy the snow is falling. the lower the visibility, the heavier the snow. if it's less than a mile, it's coming down at a pretty good clip. enough to accumulate. it is not less than a mile now. it's actually gone up in mt. poconos. so the snow is actually lighter now than it was 15 minutes ago. reading, and coatesville, just a little bit over a mile. that's still a steady snow. if it would do this for hours, it would accumulate. quakertown, 2 1/2 miles. other places like allentown, five-mile visibility, this snow is no factor at all. and, of course, it's not even snowing in the i-95 corridor. so that's why the visibilities are fine. but these are the things that we watch. not only hour by hour, but almost minute by minute because things can change pretty quickly. along with the temperatures, of course. we were 70 degrees yesterday. we were in the upper 40s today.

the roads are warm. even though it's not nightfall now. if the snowfall is heavy enough, it can still stick on the roads. so we have to watch this, again. 34 in reading. pottstown, quakertown. is the temperature dropping? not much. in those areas. it's already dropped. now, it's going to drop in the philadelphia area if snow would ever fall, but those places north and west, those are the higher elevations. the snow is falling down and as it gets to the lower elevations, it melts into rain. that's why it snows more in the mountains than in the city. and it's the same kind of issue that we have tonight. so we're not necessarily going to see that snow from western chester county come all the way through the area and everybody seeing snow tonight. here's one of the future weather computers. now, again, we've been telling you that this has been underestimating the threat of snow, but just to give you a general idea of the timing that

things are moving. will be moving. during the night, this whole system moving to the east. so it's not going to be doing this all night. and that, of course, has an impact on what to expect for the morning. so, north and west, where the stuff is happening now, through 7:00 p.m. we have rain and snow. perhaps an inch of snow on some of the grassy surfaces. the snow tapers off between 7:00 and 9:00. the roads basically wet. but the snow is ending as the night goes on, and drying begins not just with the lack of snow falling, but also the wind is likely to pick up and that will help dry things out by the morning. the snow is long over with by the time we get into the morning rush. we'll talk more about this, sheena will show you some more radars. again, things change minute to minute in situations like this.

and also see how cold it's going to get. this is nothing compared to what it's going to be. that's with the seven day in a few minutes. >> all right, see you shortly, glenn. let's continue our team coverage, head out to our reporters out in the field out in this changing weather. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal live in allentown. >> all right, randy, i guess you're starting to see a mix of snow and rain out there? >> reporter: yeah, changing is the key word out here. we're really right on the fence between rain everyoand snow. i'm going to call it snow. i can see it in the air floating down real slow. we have seen significant flurries a bit earlier when it was a bit colder i guess. right now i'm going to call this slow, maybe sleet. it's coming down. it's very wet. it's not going to stick to the ground. the ground is soaking wet from rain. this is a very stubborn system in allentown. we're right on the fence between freezing and not freezing, so it's a lot of slush, lot of sleet. it's snowing. we'll call it snow. it's been like this for about an hour now. as the system continues to come east toward us, we will see if it actually turns into

significant snowfall. that accumulates on the ground. right now it's just wet. the roads are wet and the snow is wet. but it is snowing here in allentown. live in the lehigh valley, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> randy needs a hat. all right. let's go now from allentown to plymouth township, montgomery county, where we find doug shimell. >> what's that behind you, doug? big salt pile? i hope not snow. >> reporter: that is plymouth township's big surplus of road salt. when you have the sort of rain with a slight changeover to snow conditions, and we're barely even at mid-november, it starts to make the stockpiling of this extra road salt like they're doing in plymouth township and other townships a pretty good bet. >> when we couldn't get salt, that's when i know we were in a world of hurt. >> reporter: they have a new $100,000 plow and salt truck that plymouth township is adding to the road salt they're trying to stockpile.

>> they reserve storage of 200 to 300 ton in the event we need it. last year trying to scrounge around and ask anyone, does anyone have leftover salt, was difficult and stressful. >> reporter: in small towns last winter, the salt ran out. snow plow overtime soared. and plow equipment wore out. and budgets went way over. in upper hanover township, they've cleaned out the last of the leaves and stored the mowers and added money to the budget. >> as long as we can get salt, we'll be fine. that's about our -- like you said. with the equipment, holding up the blades, and salt. >> reporter: plymouth township's new truck can only do so much without the salt, but all that surplus is costing them $11 more a ton this year. >> every order that we make, you know, normally we order 200 to 300 at a time, we're looking at a $2,000, $3,000 cost difference from last year per load. >> reporter: it also means the worst-case scenario they used to base their budgets on is out the

window. >> what we typically do is budget for the worst winter we had in the last ten years, so coming into next year, of course, we have a new worst year, which was just the past season. >> reporter: and of course, as we watch rain and every so often a large, wet, what looks to be a snowflake, fall down, i guess if a public works director goes before their governing body and asks for more money for snow removal and road salt, they will probably get their wish. live in plymouth township, doug shimell, nbc 10 munews. >> thank you, doug. speaking of snowflakes, look what's behind us. that's camelback mountain over our shoulden. snow is coming down there. nothing you can ski on yet. >> nope. that is camelback. not philadelphia. >> exactly. let's head out to nbc 10's brittney shipp live for us in ardmore with stormforce 10 as well. >> reporter: that's right. here's stormforce 10. one thing we've been keeping a close eye on are the conditions. with stormforce 10 we have a

weather station that is attached to stormforce 10. the temperature right now 38.9 degrees. we continue to monitor it. in the last 20 minutes or so, it has continued to drop. about 2 degrees every 20 minutes. so it's definitely chilly here. we are also dealing with the rainfall. so this is the cold rain that continues to come down. it even tells us the rainfall rate at .06 an inch per hour. that's light rainfall. it's definitely been steady. again, our temperatures today mainly stayed in the 40s. now they're dropping down into the 30s. we already showed you snowfall in the poconos. right here in suburban square, we're mainly just dealing with the rainfall for this evening. as we head into tonight, temperatures are expected to drop down into the low 30s. i'll keep you updated on the situation from ardmore. reporting live, i'm first alert meteorologist brittney shipp. we will send it back to you guys in the studio. and a reminder, you can get important weather information delivered right to your smartphone, or to your tablet with the nbc 10 weather app. it's a free download you can get

and this camera right here from camelback mountain resort is captivating us because look at the snow coming down right now. live pictures coming to us. and glenn is telling us this could continue for a little while longer. we don't know exactly how long, but we're keeping an eye on that for sure. let's check in now with our lu ann cahn who is in east caln township chester county. >> reporter: all right. we are experiencing a wintery mix. it's interesting, about a half hour ago when we got here, it was mostly rain with just a little bit of snow. couple minutes ago, it switched over. we were getting some big healthy flakes. and now it looks like it's going back a little mix of rain and some snow, but no accumulation at all. you look at the grass, no accumulation there. on the roads, just wet.

no accumulation. but someone just stopped to talk to me. she lives in guthriesville not far from here. it's just a higher elevation over the ridge. and she says it's definitely accumulating there. they've got a coating. so we're going to move on and follow the snow and see what we see. live in chester county, lu ann cahn, nbc 10 news. >> all right, lu ann, thanks. we continue our live team coverage. nbc 10 first alert weather team tracking the snow. >> let's begin with nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen. where's the show right now? >> the snow like lu ann showed us, chester county, lancaster county, berks county and of course the higher elevation up in the poconos. here's what it looks like. the big picture. south jersey, delaware, nothing really, maybe a little light rain. same thing around the philadelphia area. now we zoom in to parts of chester county. this is where we've been seeing pretty steady snowfall. pa parkesburg seeing light snow. the precip rate 0.04 an inch per hour. it's falling on the lighter side. however, we've been seeing it for a while.

fairly light snow around west caln, too. higher elevations. parts of chester county lu ann was telling her about that the woman told her she saw more snow accumulating on grassy surfaces which we do expect. lancaster county, snow blanketing the county in this case, mostly on the lighter side. grassy accumulations. robson, parts of the allentown or reading area i should say. 0.04 of snow or precip per hour. robeson seeing the light rain. continues around the reading area. we're continuing to see the light rare in areas surrounding reading we could be seeing close to a tenth of an inch per hour. so, again, it is on the lighter side. however, it is pretty steady. higher elevations up in the poconos are seeing the light snow as well. this has been continuing for quite a while. we've been seeing it falling and in parts of the poconos we could see about an inch of accumulation or so. but again, those areas north and westkháñb that we've been seein light rain changing over to light snow, we could certainly see some accumulation on grassy surfaces.

so, again, this will continue as we go through the rest of the evening and the light precip north and west of philadelphia as those temperatures drop. still do have the chances of it changing over to some light snow across the area. standing by is chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz with a look at the temperatures and the timing for the rest of tonight. glenn? >> yeah, sheena, as you poconos, and it's sticking, at least on the grassy surfaces. now, it might seem that the snow is heavy, but it's not as heavy as it was a half hour ago, and the way that we can show you that is with the visibility. it was well down below a mile. now it's up to a mile. it is not heavy snow when it's one mile visibility. we have not seen a significant change in reading and coatesville in the last few minutes or in quakertown or in allentown or pottstown. the snow visibility has to go down below a mile for really significant snow to be falling.

obviously it's not happening in the i-95 corridor because it's still raining. and the temperature is not dropping. okay? that's good news for the roads. had been warm. still above freezing. all the traffic on the roads helps keep it warm. 34 in kennett square. got to watch it. hour by hour. because if the snow starts coming down heavily, it can drop the temperatures significantly. 38 degrees in trenton. here's the future cast. you see the area of snow, especially in western chester county. generally moving to the east. the whole trend is for that to happen. so it's not going to be doing this all night. and you'll also notice that we're not expecting it to change over to snow throughout the area. it's not quite cold enough for that to happen. these are very low elevations. back in western chester county,

the poconos, that's high up. so if there were mountains right along the delaware river, it would be snowing tonight. no doubt about it. but we don't have mountains. so that is a different story. and you an see the drier air coming in as we head toward sunrise. we may even see sunshine first thing in the day. so in the philadelphia i-95 corridor, it's mainly rain. maybe some brief wet snow in parts of the area. but it's pretty much rain. with wet roads tonight. the rain ending well before daybreak. and then it starts drying out. the roads start drying out as well. and north and west, that's where we have the mix of rain and snow. more snow in the higher elevations. it's not necessarily east and west. if you're in the valley, you're going to get less than at the top of the hill with situations like this. the snow tapering off between

7:00 and 9:00. again, generally wet roads. the snow ends toward midnight. and then we start drying out. so, it's going to all be over with by tomorrow morning. again, we're going to start thinking about the eagles again. and on sunday, green bay, it's going to be freezing cold. it's going to be 19 by the fourth quarter with a windchill of 5 degrees. now the cold air that has come in today is going to stay with us. the worst of the arctic air is going to stay back to the west. we're going to get a little bit of mild air on monday, so when the next storm comes, that's warm enough for rain and then the arngtic actic air comes in,s going to be colder next tuesday and wednesday than it will be tomorrow and saturday. so for the rest of the night, we have periods of rain. some snow in the mix north and rest. down to 33 in philadelphia. 28 in the suburbs. the 28 happens after everything is over and we start to clear out. sunny, breezy, colder tomorrow.

highs in the low to mid 40s. the wind is going to make it feel like it's in the 30s. the seven-day forecast, very cold saturday morning. everybody's in the 20s. only 42 for the high. look, the average high is 57. we're not going to be near it for quite a while. sunday is cloudy and cold. but we warm up in time for rain on monday and then the arctic blast comes after that. and some really, really cold temps. all right. be prepared for the snow this winter season. sign up for school closings on nbc10.com. we will, of course, alert you via text or e-mail if your school decides to shut down. we'll be right back.

you know what, let me close this picture. you know what, bypass this right now. let's go live, though, to the mellon camera in philadelphia. this is a really important shot. on the left side, you see that long winding path of lights. that's the schuylkill expressway. traffic is backed up heading into the city. that traffic, of course, become of the wet conditions. the rain mix there making the roads slick. of course, backing up traffic. you can't see the art museum in the center of the picture, but clearly from the rain on the lens there, you see that they're dealing with the conditions around philadelphia. stay with nbc 10. weather is a priority here. we'll be right bang. ♪

on the paved surfaces. so it is only sticking on the grassy surfaces. that means it's not going to accumulate there. we're not expecting this to last in the poconos much longer. right, glenn? >> yeah, it's not as heavy as it was a half hour ago, and a half hour ago it was as heavy as it was a half hour before that. so the general trend is for weakening. we have drier air coming in. we have a large area of rain, but only a small area of snow. and this swrerl generally in thr elevati elevations, western chester county, lancaster county, berks county, and the lehigh valley. the higher elevations of the lehigh valley. even upper montgomery and upper bucks. of course, poconos, high elevations everywhere, it's snowing everywhere. the back edge of that snow is moving to the east. so it's not going to last that much longer. maybe another couple of hours. there's the back edge coming past harrisburg. so the trend is there, but the
