"nbc 10 news" starts now. >> while you've been sleeping, runners have been pushing through the miles in the philadelphia marathon. these are the half marathon runners who are making their way across the finish line. we'll have a live report from the race route. the runners aren't the only athletes in philly with a big day ahead of them. the eagles will take on the titans this afternoon here at the link. the weather is certainly cooperating today for all the events outside. here is a live look down the shore at cape may, new jersey, where the temperatures are getting back to normal. we're going to be warmer today than normal. i'm rosemary conners. it's 9:00 on this sunday. michelle grossman is tracking the dry conditions right now,

but a big change is coming tonight, right, michelle? >> yeah, we have a lot of big changes. tonight we're going to see rain coming in overnight. it could be heavy at times. and then we have a big warm-up on monday. we're seeing milder temperatures this morning, even into this afternoon as well. we're waking up and walking out to some clouds this morning. temperatures not bad this morning. we're into the 30s, the 40s. we are 14 degrees warmer than this time yesterday in philadelphia. up to 19 degrees warmer in mount pocono, so you will definitely feel that as you step out this morning. temperatures mainly in the upper 30s, the low 40s across the area, as opposed to the 20s and 30s we were seeing yesterday at this time. 45 right now in philadelphia. 42 in allentown. 45 is higher than the high we saw yesterday. 45 in atlantic city and 48 in wildwood. so for today, plan on a day that is close to average. we haven't seen that in a while. 53 is normal for this time of year. i think we'll top out right around 54. by 3:00, we'll see that 54 degrees. we'll talk more about the mild weather today, and then a warm day on monday.

could break some records. we'll talk about that coming up. right now, tens of thousands of runners are push eight head toward the finish line of the philadelphia marathon. nbc 10's matt delucia is right there at the finish line. you've been checking in with runners all morning who are out there on the race route right now. >> reporter: michelle just talked about breaking a record with the weather, but a lot of runners out here are trying to break a record in terms of their speed and their time. the record here for the philadelphia marathon, or i should say last year, the first place finisher got in at two hours, 17 minutes, and 35 seconds. that is not the record, but a lot of these folks are trying for that. the clock, though, it is ticking. you see them right now, we just crossed over to two hours, so we are expecting the first-place finisher within the next 15 to 20 minutes. and just over here to the left, you can see the half marathon participants. they are finishing as we speak.

that finish line, that is the goal for 30,000 people this morning. [ horn ] at 7:00, the race was on. >> that's awesome, man. like running in a big herd and everybody's got good vibes. it's fun. >> and they come from all over. ben came all the way from texas, and tim flew in from france to run with his friend. >> just take one mile at a time. and also some really great views. it's a really good course. >> reporter: the 26.2-mile course runs through center city, old city, fair mount park. some are going all the way while others are taking it one step at a time. >> this is our first half marathon. we're definitely going for the marathon next year. and, you know, we're just happy to be here. we're definitely both enthusiastic about being healthy and, you know, all that other good stuff. so, you know, we had to do it. >> reporter: for themselves, or to inspire others. >> i'm a teacher. it's a great way to be able to balance the workload with being

the brown family lawyer to residents there remain on edge about what could happen after the grand jury announcement. >> the jury is deliberating. they're going to do their job. when they finish their job, we all will know. >> not knowing when the verdict is coming. not knowing what's going to happen after the verdict comes. it's just a scary situation. >> ferguson has been the scene of violent protests and street demonstrations since the deadly shooting happened in august. be sure to stay with nbc 10 and nbc10.com for complete coverage of the grand jury decision in ferguson. new from overnight in our area, philadelphia police are investigating a shooting in the city's frankfurt neighborhood. nbc 10 was on the scene on penn state when the shooting happened around 1:00. according to detectives, a bullet grazed a man's leg. the victim went to the hot. right now, police are not saying what led to the shooting and

have not made any arrests in case. another victim went to the hospital after a car flipped over. this happened overnight. a crew arrived to check out a broken utility pole that came down during the crash. police have not released the victim's condition and have not said what caused this accident. in mercer county, authorities have released new information about a hunting accident that left one man dead. west windsor township police now say that the 45-year-old victim accidentally shot himself while hunting canada geese with his father yesterday afternoon. the two men were in a wooded area near their farm on old trenton road. police initially told us that they believe the father accidentally shot the son, but late last night, they determined that was not the case. their investigation is ongoing. today funeral services will be held for an army veteran killed in a deadly pile-up in burkes county.

jeremy augustine died in this accident on allentown pike near reading on wednesday. a nurse from the area was also killed. police say a tractor-trailer smashed into one car, and that caused a chain reaction with several other vehicles. nine other people were injured in this crash. according to police, the truck driver steven bernier was asleep at the wheel and speeding. he is facing a list of charges, including homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter. bernier is now being held on half a million dollars bail. in philadelphia, police are accusing convicted tire slasher david toledo of going back to his old ways. officers arrested him yesterday after some cars were vandalized near his house. toledo is on probation for slashing tires in the mayfair section of philadelphia in 2012. you may remember, he was outspoken at the time, wanting to catch the vandal, but police say toledo was the one responsible all along. his latest arrest comes after several cars were damaged on

creston street in oxford circle. witnesses saw a man placing an object near the tire of the vehicle. turns out the object was a mouse trap with nails attached to it. police say the investigation led them to toledo. now to the atlantic city casino crisis. the trump taj mahal has offered a deal to its workers as part of a last-ditch effort to keep the casino open. the company says the deal would restore health insurance to the workers for at least two years. in return, the casino wants the union to drop its appeal of a court order that cancelled the health insurance and pension plans. the union president has declined to comment. at this point, the taj is still scheduled to close on december 12th. new jersey's division of gaming enforcement says that online gambling started slower than expected. governor chris christie's administration had predicted that online betting would bring in $1 billion in its first year,

but it's only earned a tenth of that just over $111 million. according to the division of gaming enforcement, the goal for the second year is to increase player pools in online games like poker. for those of you who play fantasy football, this one's for you. monmouth park racetrack in ocean port says that it will soon offer fantasy sports betting. they announced those plans yesterday, just one day after a judge ruled that the state cannot lift the ban on pro sports gambling. track officials have not yet set a date for the fantasy sports betting. they would only say that it would happen in the near future. today is game day at the link. the 7-3 eagles will host the 2-8 tennessee titans. quarterback mark sanchez and the eagles will try to bounce back from last week's blowout loss in green bay. one big step that's working for the birds, they've won nine straight regular season games at home. the eagles and the titans will kick off at the link this afternoon at 1:00. a sheriff's deputy lured to

at camelback mountain resort, you can see it's a little bit cloudy out there, but it's going to be dry today. that is until the overnight hours, we are expecting some rain coming into the region. by the way, camelback mountain resort will open their slopes on friday.

this morning, police in cleveland are explaining why an officer shot a 12-year-old boy. it happened at a rec center where people thought the child had a handgun. it turned out to be a fake. the officer saw the boy pull the replica gun from his waistband. the officer then fired two shots, hitting the boy in stomach. the boy is in serious condition following surgery and police are continuing to investigate. also in cleveland, police are still looking for a motive in the shooting deaths of four people, including a pregnant woman. this happened friday at the woman's home. her 9-year-old daughter is among the wounded victims. police say they're looking for a masked gunman who broke into the house. a florida sheriff's deputy is dead this morning after a man set his own house on fire and ambushed the deputy who responded. police say the gunman shot and killed one deputy and took his gun. he then shot another deputy, wounding him. an off duty officer who lived nearby heard the gunshots, ran outside, and killed the gunman.

investigators say the gunman made previous threats against police. a new york city dad could be facing charges for accidentally shooting his 9-month-old daughter. police say the man was cleaning his illegal gun when it went off. the infant was shot in the hip. she is in stable condition. the dad is in police custody, but has not yet been charged. this morning, marion barry, the former mayor of washington, d.c., is dead at the age of 78. barry passed away just after midnight at a hospital in washington. over the last year, barry had appeared frail. beginning in 1979, voters elected him mayor four times. barry's 1990 arrest, though, in which he was caught on surveillance video smoking crack cocaine overshadowed his political career, but barry made a comeback in the last decade winning three terms as a d.c. councilman. at the university of virginia, all fraternity activities are suspended after a student claims she was sexually

assaulted by several fraternity members. >> not one more! >> police arrested four people yesterday outside of a fraternity house at the university of virginia. this happened during a protest against sexual abuse of women. the demonstrators were responding to the allegations that seven frat brothers attacked a student here in 2012. now to a bizarre incident out of boston. a naked man whom police say went on a rampage in a restroom at logan airport is under arrest. this happened yesterday. police say the man stripped naked inside of the stall of a women's bathroom. he then climbed into the ceiling through a tile. moments later, he came crashing down to the floor. he scared some of the women in the restroom. then police say the man ran out of the bathroom only to attack an elderly man. he bit him. he tried to choke him with his own cane. state troopers ended up wrestling the man to the ground and they did arrest him. the elderly gentleman is doing okay. air travelers said that the

whole thing just was a big mess. >> for a male to even be in the women's bathroom is out of control in the first place. >> i think that's nasty, strange, and weird. >> it would absolutely make me a little bit more nervous of public restrooms. be aware of my surroundings. >> the 26-year-old suspect is now facing a number of criminal charges. the problems just keep coming for the folks who live up in buffalo. with a lot of snow already on the ground, warmer weather and rain on the way could make matters worse. we'll talk about it after the break. locally, we are pretty quiet around here, although we do have warmer weather on the way as well as some rain. tonight, though, here's a live look outside. looking good for the game today. we have a little bit more cloud cover than what we had yesterday and it is warmer. we'll talk more about the numbers. also when that rain will arrive, it's all after the break.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> a good sunday morning. i'm meteorologist michelle grossman. hope you're enjoying your morning so far. it is milder outside. temperatures into the 40s at this point in a lot of spots. we're going to be near normal as we head through the afternoon. normal, typical this time of year is 53 degrees. that is or first weather headline on this sunday morning. back to normal. finally we had that stretch of 30s, 40s. yesterday we were in the 40s. today back to the 50s and warmer on monday. we're tracking rain overnight. could be heavy at times and we'll see that into the early part of monday. warmer on monday, also windy. temperatures into the 70s. we could break records. the record in philadelphia is 71

degrees. could be a little bit higher than that. we'll call it clouds and sun as we head throughout the day. a live look outside. temperatures not bad. 45 right now in philadelphia. winds out of the southwest at 9 miles per hour. that is 14 degrees warmer than where we were yesterday. temperatures mainly in the 40s for everybody at this point. even mount pocono. 43 degrees in reading. the atlantic city airport, 45. 44 in millville. 44 in wilmington. so it will be cool today, but it's supposed to be cool for this time of year. as we go throughout time here, tracking our temperatures by later on this afternoon, i do think we'll top out right around 54 degrees. so by 3:00, you see 50s, mainly to the north and west. same story in millville. 52. 49 at the atlantic city airport later on this afternoon. cool weather today, but warmer than we have been, so i think we're going to take it. and then mild air comes into play on monday. it lasts for one day. doesn't hang around long. cool air comes back on tuesday,

back into the 50s. and then we're looking at cold air. wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday. and kind of hangs around for a little while. we're talking 40s, low 40s in some points. radar showing us that we are dry. we are dry for now. but that will change overnight. so as we go throughout time here, clouds and sun throughout the day. a quiet day. a milder day. and then notice by 11:00 tonight, we're getting tucked into bed, we see some rain showing up on radar. it could be heavy at times overnight. notice the darker colors, the yellows to oranges by 4:00 a.m. you'll hear this on your roof. the heavier rainfall. by 8:00, still seeing some lingering stuff. and then it should be out of here by later on in the day. the big weather story on monday becomes the warmer weather, also the wind. so anyone could pick up anywhere from a half-inch up to an inch of rain as we go throughout the overnight hours. mount pocono looking to get the most. nearly an inch and a quarter. today, sun and clouds, milder. 53 to 55. then for tonight, we're going to keep it mild once again.

this is "nbc 10 news." >> i'll tell you, the folks in buffalo, new york, really can't catch a break. this morning, rising temperatures and the melting snow, that's creating some problems. the threat of flooding is in store for folks there today. remember, they had several feet of snowfall earlier this week. new york's governor says that officials are preparing for the worst, but they are hoping for the best. the state is sending in pumps, boats, helicopters, and high axle vehicles that can operate in four to five feet of water. meanwhile, neighbors are helping residents who are still snowed in. hundreds of volunteers have been forming what they're calling shovel brigades to help dig people out. the time right now 9:27. a little bit more than two hours in, the first place runner has crossed the finish line of the philadelphia marathon.

"nbc 10 news" starts now. >> we have a winner. within the past 15 minutes, the first place runner of the philadelphia marathon crossed the finish line. we're live with an update from the ben franklin parkway. a few miles away from the race route, football fans are getting ready for some action in south philly. the eagles will take on the titans this afternoon. we have had some frigid weather the past few days. we're finally warming up a bit. here is a live look over center city. i hate to tell you this, but you know the deal. don't get used to it, because the cold weather, it's going to be back. good morning. i'm rosemary conners. it's just after 9:30 on this sunday. this is "nbc 10 news today."

let's get right to the forecast with meteorologist michelle grossman. it seems like we're going to be on a little bit of a roller coaster when it comes to the forecast the next couple days. >> yeah, we're going to call it the ping-pong weather forecast. we're going to warm up, but it's going to be brief. one day and then it's right back to the 40s. we are milder this morning. here's a nice shot. we are looking at temperatures not too bad. it's actually really great weather for a marathon. not too cold, not too hot. the cloud cover is perfect, too. we're looking at temperatures mainly in the 40s. yesterday was so cold. today we're looking at temperatures, chilly but still around 45 in philadelphia. 42 in allentown. 38 degrees in lancaster. we're seeing that southwesterly flow. that's helping to bump up the temperatures. we will see some rain as we go throughout the overnight hours. we'll continue to see these temperatures rise throughout the afternoon. winds on the light side right now out of the southwest. but they will pick up tonight into monday. by 11:00, 46 degrees, 51 by

1:00, and by 3:00 p.m., we are looking at 54 degrees, which is right around normal for this time of year. milder today, even milder on monday. we can break some records. we'll talk more about that. plus we'll time out that rain for you too in just a few minutes. right now, we are keeping track of all the action at the philadelphia marathon. tens of thousands of runners are trying for their best times on the 26.2-mile course. nbc 10's matt delucia has been at the finish line. matt, tell us about the first place winner to cross not too long ago. >> reporter: that runner crossed at two hours, 17 minutes and 28 seconds. that is the unofficial time. it still has to be certified. take a look live right now at some of the other marathon finishers crossing right now. we're at about two hours and 31 minutes. we're also waiting for the first-place female finisher. let's show you video of what it looked like when that first place winner crossed.

and that man is dan vesalo. he's joining me right now. congratulations on the win. 26.2 miles. how did you do it? >> i mean, i just kind of stuck to my plan the entire time. i wanted to run about 5.15 per mile, fast enough to get me to the u.s. olympic trials. it was really tough the last couple miles, but it was really nice to have a field with me there that i could either stay ahead of or chase down. it was fantastic. >> and you're from massachusetts, you came here to philadelphia for this marathon. >> yep. >> reporter: how exciting is it to win this? >> it's really exciting. i won this back in 2010, so philadelphia has always had a special place in my heart. and also as a sports fan in general, this is probably the best sports town in america. i really feel that way. you guys are accountable. you guys hold your athletes accountable. it's pretty amazing the way that

the fans in philadelphia are. out there on the course, it's the same kind of thing. it's fun to be out here. >> reporter: most of the runners say this is perfect weather for a marathon. >> yeah, absolutely. i mean, don't have to worry about it. i think i was checking the long-range weather forecast probably somewhere starting around, you know, february 7th or so -- no, i'm sorry. november 7th. i don't even remember what month it is. i started checking the weather, the really long-range stuff. i saw some snow out there. i saw some wind out there. i was a little scared. but it ended up being a really nice day. >> you got lucky. >> reporter: congratulations, dan. two-time winner here at the philadelphia marathon. we're waiting for the first female winner. that should be happening. i think that is happening right now, as i look out in the distance. i don't know -- it's way out there. we heard that the female winner is about a mile out, but that was a couple minutes ago.

including homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter. he's now being held on half a million dollars bail. this morning, philadelphia police are looking for two men. one of them is responsible for a shooting. the other is wanted for hitting a police officer with his car. that injured officer suffered scrapes and bruises, but should be okay. the chain of events began late yesterday in north philadelphia. investigators tell us the officer was responding to reports of gunshots on north fair hill street. right now that victim is in critical condition. then right after the shooting, the victim's friend committed a different crime. >> a friend of this male allegedly was going after the shooter, and a police officer tried to stop the car, and this person struck the officer with the car. >> the man who drove the car into the officer is now facing aggravated assault charges.

police recovered this gun they say was used in the shooting. again, in addition to the driver, they're looking for the person who pulled the trigger. this morning, police in ocean county need your help. they hope that this surveillance video will help them track down a bank robber. investigators say this masked man went into a bank in manchester township yesterday morning and handed a teller a note demanding cash. the teller then handed over an undisclosed amount of money and the man got away. if you recognize him, police would like to hear from you. new this morning, police in north hatch on the county are also asking for your help. they need to find a missing woman. jessica padgett, seen here, was last seen leaving her daycare job in north hampton on friday afternoon. police found her white subaru outback at a dollar general store just about a mile away, but no trace of padgett. she is 34 years old, 5'4", and has a tattoo of a footprint on her shoulder. if you have any information as

thanksgiving meal this year, but not by much. according to the american farm bureau federation, a thanksgiving meal for ten people will set you back about $49.41. that's 37 cents higher than last year. you can blame the increase in part on a jump in the price of the milk that you may use to make those mashed potatoes. most of your money, of course, will be spent on the bird itself. the federation estimates that a 16-pound conventional turkey will cost you about $22. the food bank of south jersey needs turkeys. volunteers hosted a turkey drop yesterday, and packed up other goods, so that those who are less fortunate can enjoy a holiday meal. you can still help. the food bank is always willing to take donations, especially this time of year. the flyers battled it out on the ice to try to end their four-game losing streak. could they do it? we'll have the highlights in sports. we are dry for now, but we

now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> i'm meteorologist michelle grossman. we are walking out the door to some clouds. also seeing milder temperatures. still chilly this morning, just not as cold as yesterday. today is going to end up being a really nice day. taking a look outdoors, you can see more cloud cover with all that warm air working in. the clouds kind of kept us warm overnight. we'll be milder as we head throughout the afternoon. 45 right now under mostly cloudy skies in philadelphia. winds out of the southwest at 9 miles per hour. we're looking at temperatures across the region mainly in the 40s. 42 in reading. 45 in philadelphia. 45 in atlantic city. same story everywhere else.
