"nbc 10 news" starts now. >> it's been more than three days and still no sign of a student from westchester university who went missing after a night out with friends in manayunk. why his family is asking search volunteers to stay home today. he says he doesn't want to put other officers at risk. ferguson police officer darren wilson is walking away from his job. we'll have more on his decision to leave the force. let's take a live look outside right now, down the shore in cape may, new jersey, where it's chilly out there this morning, but it's already warmer than it's been the last few days. good morning. welcome back to "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary conners. it's 6:00 on this sunday. let's get right to the weather with first alert meteorologist brittney shipp. a lot of ups and downs in the forecast. >> that's right. our temperatures yesterday stay

in the mid 40s and now today we'll head above average into the mid 50s. we even continue to warm up as we head into tomorrow. here's a live look outside right now. we can see the flags are blowing, so breezy conditions expected throughout most of the day, as a warm front drags warmer air up from the south. right now, our temperatures in the poconos at freezing. 29 degrees in allentown. 33 in pottstown. 43 degrees. in the mid 40s for wildwood. as we push into the rest of your sunday, expect temperatures to range between 51 and 55 degrees. your seven-day forecast coming up. new from overnight, philadelphia police are investigating a deadly shooting in the strawberry mansion section of the city. nbc 10 was on the scene outside of the house on edgily street. that's where a man was shot to death after leaving a party around 2:30 this morning. there were at least two dozen people inside the house at the time of the shooting. the victim was 35 years old.

police are now talking to witnesses at the party who may also new from overnight, philadelphia police are looking calling a suspicious death. nbc 10 was at the scene on locust street in west philadelphia, just after 11:15 last night, where detectives say a 49-year-old woman was found face down in a bedroom inside the house. police have not said how the woman may have died. a man is hurt this morning after a crash in the germantown neighborhood of philadelphia. this happened along wayne avenue and west walnut lane overnight. the 29-year-old passenger in the -- the 29-year-old victim was a passenger in the sedan that crashed. it's unclear what caused the wreck. this morning, the search will continue for a westchester university student who went missing after a night out on thanksgiving eve. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in manayunk, the last place anybody saw 21-year-old shane montgomery. fill us in what's happening there today.

>> reporter: philadelphia police and the marine unit will be out where we are is right across the street from the last place that shane montgomery was seen. last night here in this very spot, several hundred family members, friends, and neighbors came out for a candlelight vigil. a priest led the group in prayer as shane montgomery's family wrapped up yet another day of an exhaustive search that turned up nothing. the 21-year-old westchester senior was out with friends wednesday night into early thursday morning here on main street, and once shane left, no one heard from him. some of the supporters are shane's former high school classmates and friends. they've been spending their holiday weekend looking for shane. >> went all the way down there. we were up at conti at one point. we've been all around.

still looking, though. >> it's good with the turnout, that everyone's pulling to for shane. just hope we find him. offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to shane's whereabouts. what you're seeing now is the search as it happened yesterday afternoon. i was there as they all gathered together just beforehand at the church. i'd say easily a few hundred people in attendance. the family thanked members of the search party last night, saying that this really is what keeps them going through all of this. but now they are asking that volunteers stay home today and let the police handle the search. and let them focus without any interference. again, the marine unit is expected out here along the manayunk canal. i'm matt delucia, nbc 10 news. this morning, pennsylvania state police and the chester county fire martial's office will resume their work to try to determine what caused a deadly house fire. the flames broke out around 1:30 yesterday morning on

harmoniville road in warwick township. police say a man and woman died in the fire. their identities have not been released. investigators tell us they do not consider the fire to be suspicious. philadelphia police say the city's murder rate is up from last year, but they say it's still better than other recent years. police count 228 homicides so far this year. that's nine more than this point in 2013, but it's less than both 2012 and 2011 when there were 301 homicides by november 29th. you may remember, philadelphia was in the national spotlight last year when the number of murders dropped to its lowest level in nearly half a century. today officials in ferguson, missouri, will issue a statement on the resignation of police officer darren wilson. he's the officer who shot and killed michael brown, the unarmed teenager. wilson was on administrative leave since the shooting in august. last monday, a grand jury in

ferguson decided not to indict wilson for killing the 18-year-old during a confrontation. both the shooting and the decision have fueled protests in ferguson and across the country. wilson's lawyer says that the officer stepped down for the good of the community and his fellow officers. >> he's simply walking away because he believes that his continued employment would put others at risk. certainly there's no wrong doing on his part. to resign might have suggested he did something wrong. >> he needs to be behind bar. >> he didn't have no choice, really. >> that's just some of the reaction to wilson's resignation, which has taken effect immediately. a new style of protesting in ferguson is under way. it happened yesterday. demonstrators set out on a week-long 120-mile march from ferguson to the governor's mansion in jefferson city, missouri. the naacp organized the march and says that they want police reform in ferguson and across

the nation. in st. louis today, reverend al sharpton will be a guest preacher at the church where michael brown's funeral was held. brown's parents are expected to attend the sunday service that will offer prayers for the late teenager. some penn state university trustees are asking to review documents used to investigate child sex abuse complaints in the jerry sandusky scandal. those do you means were used to create the 2012 report issued by former fbi director louis freeh. several trustees are asking their chairman to share the information. they say they want to verify sources in the freeh report that accuse school leaders of hiding complaints that sandusky was abusing children. the former assistant football coach is serving a 30 to 60-year prison term for molesting ten boys. today, people all across our area will be taking to the roads, the rails and the air to return home from the thanksgiving holiday. philadelphia international airport tells us that this is

their busiest day of the year. the airport recommends that travelers arrive about two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights. that way you have plenty of time to go through check-in and security. amtrak also advises train riders to get to 30th street station early today. this year there are extra holiday trains and more seats on amtrak's northeast corridor. but still expect large crowds. we have been through black friday, small business saturday, and next up, it's cyber monday. millions of people will be looking for deals online tomorrow. last year, shoppers spent more than $1.7 billion on cyber monday. according to consumer experts, to get the most savings, sign up for e-mail and coupon alerts from your favorite stores. and check the retailer's facebook and twitter pages. this weekend, local mom and pop shops started off the holiday season with small business saturday. as i mentioned, that happened yesterday. this was the seen in haddenfield, camden county,

where people were taking advantage of the deals. small business saturday was created four years ago to encourage people to shop at independently owned businesses. many of those sales will continue through today. retailers saw a boost in sales on thanksgiving day. spending on the holiday jumped 24% to more than $3 billion year over year. meanwhile, black friday sales dropped 7% to just more than $9 billion. studies show that more people are staying home to shop. online black friday sales climbed 9.5%. according to the experts, one out of every four sales comes from a smart phone or a tablet. this week, wmmr's preston and steve will brave cold overnight temperatures, all for a good cause. it's their annual campout for hunger. starting tomorrow, the morning show hosts will broadcast live from the parking lot of xfinity live in south philly. they'll be collecting nonperishable food all week long. those donations will be passed

>> at 6:12 this morning, let's go back down the shore to cape may where we get another live look. temperatures much warmer than they were yesterday, and we're going to warm into the mid 50s by this afternoon. meteorologist brittney shipp will have the details coming up. now to some new information about that deadly mall shooting in chicago. police say a woman who was shot by her boyfriend inside the nordstrom department store died at the hospital last night. the gunman killed himself at the scene. the woman was a nordstrom season employee. nobody else inside the store was hurt. court records show that the victim's family tried to get a restraining order against the boyfriend last spring. now to some news in georgia. a boy found behind a fake wall inside of a house has been reunited with his mother four years after he was first reported missing. he cried as he hugged his mother yesterday. the boy was visiting his father in 2010, and the father refused

to return him to his mother. officers found him hidden behind the false wall yesterday morning. the teen was able to call his mom while the officers were inside the house. she relayed vital information to the police which led to the discovery. the boy's father and stepmother are now under arrest and accused of false imprisonment and cruelty to children. three other kids inside the house were also arrested. it's unclear who has custody of the boy, although he was reunited with his mother yesterday, he'll likely stay in the custody of children's services for now. in texas, a houston man is in the hospital after his truck plunged more than 20 feet down a ditch at a construction site. police say the man ran several red lights, sideswiped a car, and then crashed through a fence before ending up inside this hole. witnesses climbed down to rescue him. investigators believe that alcohol may have played a role in this wreck. there have been many violent scenes from protests over the

grand jury decision in ferguson, missouri. but this heartwarming photo is a welcome change and is now drawing heavy attention on social media. it's a portland police officer hugging a young boy during one of those protests across the country. a freelance photographer captured the picture on tuesday. it shows sergeant brett barnum embracing the 12-year-old. his name is devante hart. it was during a ferguson demonstration. the boy was crying a wearing and sign that read "free hugs." barnum says he took hart up on the offer and the two talked about the protest and life in general. must-have toys for the holidays are right out of hollywood. we'll let you know what items will likely be flying off the store shelves. and temperatures are finally warming up. we'll head into the mid 50s today, even warmer by tomorrow. what to expect is coming up in your first alert seven-day forecast.

feels more like 39 degrees, but our 24-hour temperature change map really tells the picture. we're up 17 degrees in philadelphia. up 21 degrees in northeast philly. 22 in mount holly. 24 in atlantic city. you can see the clouds moving in. we'll continue to see our wind speeds moving up from the south. a warm front is going to cross our area. throughout the rest of the nation, it is relatively quiet. we're just checking out a band of moisture moving into south dakota. also, scattered showers to the north of san francisco. wind speeds the rest of the morning will pick up, up to about 26 miles per hour in philadelphia. staying breezy throughout most of the afternoon, and heading into the evening, our wind speeds will pick up once again. more mild air is on the way from the south which is good if you like things a little bit warmer. 51 is our average for this time of year. 55 will be the high today.

new from overnight, philadelphia police are investigating a deadly shooting in the strawberry mansion section of the city. nbc 10 was on the scene on edgeley street where a man was shot in the head and killed after leaving a house party here around 2:30 this morning. at least two dozen people were inside the house at the time of the shooting. the victim was 35 years old. police are now talking to witnesses at the party who may have seen what happened. also new from overnight, police are investigating a suspicious death in west philadelphia. nbc 10 was on this scene on locust street just after 11:15 last night, where detectives say a 49-year-old woman was found face-down in a bedroom inside the house. again, police are calling this death suspicious, but they have not said how the woman may have died. police are busy this morning, they're also investigating this crash in germantown that sent one person to the hospital. a sedan slammed into a parked car along wayne avenue. the 29-year-old victim was a passenger in the sedan.

21-year-old shane montgomery was out with friends wednesday night into early thursday morning. he was last seen at kildare's here on main street. his mother and father emotionally thanked the crowd of several hundred people. >> they were down here this morning when we got here. we did a little search, but when we got here, there was 300-some people down here waiting to search. so what keeps you going, that's what keeps you going. >> reporter: a hard couple of days indeed. this family are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to shane's whereabouts. with a you're seeing now is the search as it happened yesterday afternoon. i was there as they gathered together at a local church. a very large group indeed, including members of greater philadelphia search and rescue. the search continues. that will happen later this morning along the manayunk canal. that's when the marine unit is expected to come back out here. they've already performed searches over the past couple of

days, but they are coming back to search again. shane's family, they're getting desperate for answers but are asking that volunteers stay home today, so as not to interfere with the police efforts. live in manayunk this morning, i'm matt delucia, nbc 10 news. this morning, a man remains in stable condition after philadelphia police shot him in the germantown section of the city. this happened last night. the man is being treated for a gunshot wound to his neck. police tell us they recovered a weapon at the scene. no officers were hurt. we're working to find out exactly why police opened fire on the man. today in ferguson, missouri, officials will make a statement on the resignation of darren wilson. he's the ferguson police officer who shot and killed michael brown, the unarmed teenager. wilson turned in his resignation yesterday, effective immediately. he was on paid leave since shooting brown in august. last monday, a grand jury in ferguson decided not to indict wilson for killing the

number. tomorrow we will get a look at the cyber monday operations at one of the biggest online retailers amazon. the company will give us a tour of its order fulfillment center. amazon customers ordered more than 36 million items last year on cyber mondays. local mom and pop shops kicked the holiday shopping into high gear this weekend with small business saturday. down the shore, some folks skipped the malls to shop small yesterday. this was the scene in cape may. small business saturday started four years ago as a way to encourage people to shop at independently owned businesses. it was also a hit in camden county. shoppers took advantage of the holiday deals. and many of those sales there will continue through today, etch though it's one day past small business saturday. president obama did his part to support the mom and pop shops. he took his daughter sasha and malia to a locally owned bookstore in washington. the first family bought two bags of books.

savings really couldn't come at a better time. gas prices are dropping every week. last week, it went down four cents a gallon. aaa says the national average price is now about 2.78 and prices are expected to keep falling, especially because opec failed to agree to cut back on oil production. shoppers tell us that they appreciate the savings. >> it makes me not feel so bad about driving further out to shop. >> every penny dropped in gas prices leads to a billion dollars pumped back into the economy in terms of discretionary income. >> some experts believe we could see these lower prices at the pump until at least the middle of next year. now let's check in with tyler matheson, who has a preview of what we can expect during the week ahead on wall street.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. as we head into the rest of your sunday to end your weekend, we are going to see warmer conditions both today and tomorrow. dry for us as well on this sunday, and then a chance of showers. as we head into next week. but a live look right now at the comcast center, we are going to see mostly cloudy skies today. 43 degrees if philadelphia. wind speeds out of the south at 9 miles per hour. 38 degrees in trenton. we're below freezing in allentown. 32 degrees in mount pocono. 44 in atlantic city. and 47 degrees in stone harbor. so it is a mild start to your morning. we are going to see mild conditions as we head into the rest of today as well. but your feels like temperature, it only feels like 38 degrees in philadelphia. feeling like 38 in atlantic city. and our 24-hour temperature change map shows we are much warmer this morning than yesterday morning. up 24 degrees in the poconos.

right now on "nbc 10 news," it is day four in the search for a missing college sfutudent who disappeared after leaving a philadelphia pub. we'll explain why police are calling in special crews today. it is one of the busiest travel days of the year as thousands will head home after the thanksgiving holiday. a chilly start to our morning as we take a live look at center city, but it will warm up here by the afternoon. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary conners. it's just before 7:00 on this sunday. meteorologist brittney shipp is tracking the conditions outside, and still some lingering clouds out there, but no rain to worry about, right, brittney? >> we're going to see a dry sunday, but the interesting thing is temperatures are anywhere from about ten to 25 degrees warmer this morning than what we saw yesterday. already in the 40s throughout parts of our area. that's a beautiful shot of cape may. our temperatures at 42 in philadelphia. low 40s in millville. 31 in allentown.
