"nbc 10 news" starts now. >> the search for shane montgomery comes to an end. more than a month after his disappearance. you'll hear from his parents who were there when divers discovered his body. a show of support from philadelphia's men and women in blue. this morning dozens of officer will be on their way to new york to pay their final respects to fallen nypd officer wenjian liu. a live report is. cog out. fog throughout much of the area. temperatures will make it feel anything like winter. how long will the warm-up last? the details are ahead in the nbc 10 first alert forecast. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today."
meteorologist michelle grossman is tracking the damp and mild conditions today. as i was driving into work, a little bit difficult to see in some spots. >> we have fog all across the area. we have visibilities down to a half mile in many many spots. you're waking up to a gray day, the fog, some rain across the area. you could see some fog behind that sign there. you're going to encounter that as you're on the roadway today. some visibility is reduced down to a half mile. taking a look at radar, we are damp this morning. seeing it moving through, especially in the western part of our viewing area. we'll see that over the next several hours. so rain this morning and a chance for showers throughout the rest of today. temperatures, they are very mild this morning compared to yesterday, 43. in philadelphia we're in the 30 toss the north and west. 35 in allentown. look to the south and east. we're into the 50s. 50 in atlantic city. 52 in wildwood. these numbers will continue to go up. it's beginning to be a very mild
day, into the low 60s. probably not record-breaking. the record for today is 68 degrees in philadelphia but it will be a warm one. by 8:00 47. by 10:00, 50 degrees. by lunchtime, we are looking at 55 degrees. normal this time of year is 41 so we're going to be well above that with a daytime high of 62 degrees. we'll see clouds throughout the day. also some showers. maybe even a thunderstorm later this afternoon. we'll talk more about that coming up. you can track the weather changes headed our way this week with your smart phone or tablet. you can get realtime information alerts and advisories by downloading our new app for the iphone. it's a free download on our website, nbc10.com. tomorrow the medical examiner is expected to officially identify the body of shane montgomery. the montgomery family says divers recovered shane's remains yesterday afternoon. crews found the body at the bottom of the schuylkill river in manayunk behind the manayunk brewery at main street.
shane disappeared in the early morning hours of thanksgiving day after a night out with friends at a nearby pub. the family tells us the discovery means shane has come home after the long search. >> it was that moment that you kind of hoped it wasn't shane and that it was something else. but at the same time he's in god's hands. >> police say they do not suspect foul play in shane's death. the family has not released funeral arrangements yet. they are asking for privacy. if you would like to read more about the shane montgomery case the statement from the family and the timeline of the search you can do it right now on our website, nbc10.com. the second new york city police officer who was gunned down in cold blood last month will be laid to rest today and a group of philadelphia's men and women in blue will be there to show their support. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in northeast philadelphia. the officers did this last week and some of them are going back. talk to us about it.
>> reporter: it's a difficult trip to take especially doing it twice. some officers are pulling into the parking lot here as we speak. they're heading inside the lodge here. last saturday, a little over 100 members of the philadelphia police took the trip to new york to attend the funeral for officer rafael ramos. officers outside the city also went including camden county police upper derby, just to name a few. today i'm told about 80 philly officers are planning to go for officer wenjian liu's memorial service. last week, so many people went from around the country, the philly officers couldn't get into the church itself, so they lined the procession route from the church to the cemetery. they plan to do the same today. you see some officers pulling in as they get ready to board the buses. i'm going to bring in officer bernard turner and you're organizing this whole thing. tell me why it's so important to go up to new york now for a second time? >> just to show the unity of our fallen officer, officers in the
line of duty. it was very important to the officers of philadelphia. he asked me would i with kind enough to just oversee the buses as we go down. he'll be joining us today. but it's just a great honor to honor an officer that was just so viciously killed in the line of duty. so that's why we're going today. we're very honored. these officers that are attending today are volunteering time off, no pay. just going down, off duty out of respect for the officers. >> reporter: and you did this last week. tell me about the mood and just the experience of being up there for that? >> just a very somber mood. just 25,000 officers from around the country. i've been doing this for approximately 30 years. police officers and firefighters. by far the biggest funeral i've ever attended. just a very gratifying moment for the procession to pass by us. we were aligned in the streets for about five ranks just for
miles. it was very somber, but reward rewarding. >> reporter: thank you officer turner. i know you have a lot of work to do as you're getting everybody ready to go on the buses. they're planning to leave about 30 minutes from now. so we'll be staying out here and giving you an update as that happens. matt delucia nbc 10 news. yesterday in brooklyn bill de blasio and bratton urged together. he urged officers to refrain from making any political statements. nypd officers turned their backs on mayo deblast owe during their funeral. some officers have criticized the mayor for sympathizing with police protesters angered by the deaths of eric garner and michael brown. tomorrow the man accused of killing a state trooper and injuring another during an ambush is scheduled for a preliminary hearing.
eric frein is charged with the deadly shooting in september. frein was on the run for about seven weeks before investigators captured him. new from overnight, philadelphia police are looking into a shooting death that led to a three-car accident. take a look. nbc 10 was on the scene of this crash along deli street in north philadelphia. police say a man in his 30s was shot in the chest while driving his minivan. the vehicle crashed into two parked cars. we are in touch with police to get more details on this story. as soon as we have an update we'll pass it along. also new from overnight, police in camden county are trying to figure out who put explosives in a mailbox. neighbors called police to report loud noises in the area right around midnight. officers tell us one cast iron mailbox exploded. nobody was hurt. this morning, philadelphia police are looking for the gunman wanted for murdering a limo driver who had only been on the job for a week.
the owner tells us a passenger taken to de lancey street shot his driver last night. the gunman stole a cell phone and about $100 in cash. this by the way, is the third murder in philadelphia so far in 2015. neighbors near the scene tell us they're disturbed by this kind of violence so early in the new year. >> we've had some issues on the 5400 block of de lancy street for years, but we were able to clean it up with the help of the 18th police district and some community activism and it has gotten much better so kind of sad to see this occur on this block since it has turned around so greatly in the past. >> police tell us they are interviewing the victim's girlfriend, who was inside the car and witnessed the shooting but was not hurt. pennsylvania state police have captured one of two escaped
inmates. timothy hostetter is back behind bars. he was picked up in schuylkill county. right now, raymond martinez is still on the run. investigators say the men set off a fire alarm at the wernersville communeity center. they managed to escape and got away in a silver minivan. we have new information about a shooting in camden. nbc 10 has learned the name of the gunman who shot the woman and her father and then killed himself. marquez johnson slashed the tires of his ex-girlfriend's car in pennsauken early yesterday. she called her father to pick her up. investigators say johnson followed their car and opened fire hitting both of them. an officer then tried to pull johnson over after he sped through a red light, but johnson drove to the parking lot of cooper university hospital where he shot and killed himself. while the woman is critical her father is in stable condition.
happening now, drivers on the pennsylvania turnpike are paying more to be on the road. a 5% toll hike went into effect at midnight. the new rates apply to easy pass and cash customers. the most common toll for a passenger vehicle will increase from a dollar and four cents to a dollar and nine cents for easy pass customers. and from a dollar 60 to $1.70 for cash customers. this is the seventh time in ten years there has been a toll increase in pennsylvania. search crews in indonesia are zeroing in on the missing airasia plane in the java sea. the new clue found this morning that's bringing them closer to the wreckage and more victims. a miraculous story of survival. how one little girl managed to escape this plane crash and where she is this morning.
new this morning in the search for the missing airasia flight crews have found a fifth piece of debris believed to be part of the plane. divers had to cope with bad weather and low visibility yesterday, but they think they have found the fuselage of the jetliner. also another body has turned up. so far, 31 bodies have been recovered. that leaves 131 passengers and crew still missing. the flight disappeared one week ago on december 28th. it was leaving indonesia, but did not make it across the java sea. meanwhile, in indonesia this morning, americans in surabaya are on alert. the u.s. embassy has issued a warning about a potential threat against banks and hotels associated with the u.s. officials say there is no connection linking the missing airasia plane and the threat. we could learn more about this plane crash in kentucky that killed everybody onboard, except a young girl.
the ntsb is expected to arrive at the crash site today. 7-year-old sailor gutzler walked nearly a mile in the dark and cold with no shoes through the woods to find help at the first house she reached. >> the little girl 7 or 8 years old, standing there bleeding. legs and all scratched up. arms scratched up. and she said her mom and dad were dead. and that she had been in a plane crash. >> again we are expecting to get some more information today. what we do know at this point is that the pilot reported engine trouble, and then air traffic controllers lost contact. about 40 minutes later, sailor made it to larry wilkins' home. her parents, sister and cousin all died in the crash. jury selection is set to begin tomorrow in the boston marathon bombing trial. the explosions left three people
dead and more than 260 injured. on friday, a federal judge denied a defense request to delay the trial, so the attorneys could have more time to prepare. if convicted, he could face the death penalty. it's a mission that can be both dangerous and rewarding. this week a doctor from the hospital of the university of pennsylvania will return to west africa to treat ebola patients. nbc 10 was there at the airport in october when dr. trish henwood left for liberia. when she came home in late november, she underwent a 21-damon or the21-day 21-day monitoring period to confirm she did not have the virus. >> when i came back to the u.s. i coordinated with the public health department in philadelphia so they were aware when he was returning and came to my house and we did direct active monitoring where i would check my temperature twice a day with them. >> her family now lives in

keep the umbrella handy. temperatures into the 60s later on this afternoon. down to a mile in atlantic city. half mile in lancaster. take it a little slower if you're flying out this morning. foggy. that warm air that worked in. 42 right now in philadelphia. we are ten degrees warmer than this time yesterday. and we're seeing winds out of the southwest at 10 miles per hour. it's that wind direction that's really going to help to warm us up as we head throughout the afternoon. right now we're into the 30s. 36 in allentown to the north and west. 41 in blue bell. to the south and east we're looking at temperatures mainly in the 50s along the coast. in philadelphia, 42. 43 in washington township. 45 as we look toward northeast philly. and the warmer spots along the
coast, into the 50s. 50 at the atlantic city airport. so this morning we are tracking some rain. we're seeing pockets of steadier rain where you see the yellows, the oranges through parts of lancaster county chester county and northern delaware. don't be surprised if you hear that on your route this morning. we are tracking rain this morning. we are tracking clouds all day long. and we are tracking the chance for showers. a cold front moves through later on this afternoon. you can clearly see where it is by this afternoon. we may be seeing some showers in our northern suburbs. even at the shore of parts of delaware. so bring the umbrella. we may even see a thunderstorm as we head throughout the afternoon hours. then we're going to see that clearing line. so grj wall clearing tonight is going to take a little while and then we're going to wake up to sunny skies on monday. today's showers likely much warmer well above normal for this time of year. tonight we're looking at temperatures dropping back into the 30s. looking at gradual clearing. so showers in the evening.

this is "nbc 10 news." almost five minutes until 6:00. you can barely see it. this is the aramark building in center city. we're dealing with quite a bit of fog this morning. temperatures a lot warmer than they've been the past few days. right now we're in the 40s. they will rise to the 60s. if you're going to be out on the roads this morning, just be aware of this fog. keep in mind that visibility is low. hey, i'm john clark. at the end of november the eagles were 9-3. the carolina panthers had just three wins and yet they're moving on to the second round of the playoffs. it's unbelievable. panthers toying with arizona. cam newton a 39-yard touchdown pass. the cardinals with a third string quarterback, just 78 yards, fewest ever in a playoff game. panthers win 27-16. cam newton gets his first playoff win, first one for the panthers in ten years. the ravens all they do is win road playoff games.
joe flacco a record seven playoff road wins now, connecting with gilmore for the touchdown. ravens beat the steelers in pittsburgh 30-17. they're going on to new england next week. chip kelly has all the football power with the eagles now, and he's searching for a new director of player personnel. pro football talk reports the current assistant director will interview for the job. only a few coaches have this power, like bill belichick and pete carroll, they both won a super bowl. ruben frank thinks kelly can do it. >> you don't win the games he's won without really having a very good understanding of personnel. you know he lost six games at oregon. three the last three years. he's gone 20-12 here. he knows players and personnel. you don't want to go to war with somebody else's soldiers. i think that's how chip feels. on to the flyers. they finished off their longest
