"nbc 10 news" starts now. >> right now on "nbc 10 news today," dozens of philadelphia police officers are in new york city to honor a brother in blue killed in last month's ambush in brooklyn. after weeks of searching for their loved ones there are answers this morning for the family of shane montgomery. tomorrow may provide them with even more closure. we'll explain. you may not need the heavy coat today. a mild sunday is in store for us, as we take a live look down the shore in cape may, where it is definitely foggy outside. don't worry, though. in terms of the temperatures warming up it will feel like winter later this week. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary conners. it's 9:00 on this sunday.

there's a lot of fog across our region. we saw it down in cape may. philadelphia international airport tells us they're dealing with the fog and they are averaging delays of over an hour right now, so keep that in mind. if you are headed out to the airport or picking somebody up. let's check in now with meteorologist michelle grossman to find out when that fog is beginning to be clearing. it's been with us all morning long. >> it sure has. we drove in with it this morning and we're going to see it over the next couple of hours. we're seeing fog we're also seeing some rain. we are seeing some fog this morning all across the area from the south to north. we are looking at center city. visibilities are reduced down to a half mile in wilmington. down to a mile and a quarter in millville. even to the north and west we're seeing a half mile visibility in lancaster. so take it slower out there. we had the fog in place. we also have the wet roadways. very mild air in place as well. 44 in mount pocono. 38 degrees in lancaster. look at the coast. we are looking at temperatures

in the 50s. 50 in atlantic city. 52 already in wildwood. these are well past what's normal for the highs on the day. we're seeing rain still moving through. it will take another couple hours before it makes its way through. spotty showers before a cold front comes through later on this evening. by 11:00, 54. by 1:00 57. by 3:00 p.m. a mild 60 degrees. mild today. but very cold during workweek. i'll have those numbers straight ahead. new from overnight, philadelphia police are looking into a shooting death that led to a three-car accident. nbc 10 was on the scene of the crash in north philadelphia. a man in his 30s was shot in the chest while driving his minivan. the vehicle crashed into two parked cars. we've been checking but police have not released any further information. in camden county a man crashed his car into a creek this morning, but he's doing okay. police say when they arrived on the scene at route 38 and mill

road in cherry hill the driver had already gotten out of the water and was sitting on top of the car. this happened just before 7:00 this morning. police are now looking into what may have led up to this accident. also this morning in camden county, police are investigating an incident involving an exploding mailbox. nbc 10 was on secoya road in cherry hill where neighbors called police to report loud noises in the area around midnight. officers tell us one cast iron mailbox exploded. nobody was hurt. so far, police have not made any arrests in this case. it has been a tough week for the new york city police department. they're now getting ready to say a final farewell to the second officer who was killed in the line of duty during an ambush in brooklyn. this is a live picture outside of the funeral home where the memorial service will be held for officer wenjian liu. a gunman killed officers liu and his partner rafael ramos last month while they were sitting in their patrol car. dozens of officers from the

philadelphia police department are in new york right now to show their support. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in northeast philadelphia where the officers boarded buses not too long ago. matt? >> reporter: about 80 members of the department left here a little after 6:00 this morning and some of them are making their second trip in just over a week. >> we want to show our respects. >> reporter: boarding buses bound for new york philadelphia officer christopher muldrich said his presence at officer wenjian liu's memorial today is more than a choice it's a personal obligation. >> there's a lot of sorrow but there's also a lot of pride in the police community, so we like to go up and support our brothers and sisters. >> reporter: the display this morning reads pray for nypd officer liu as he is laid to rest sunday. last week, more than 100 officers from philadelphia and neighboring departments attended the funeral for officer rafael ramos. >> it was very surreal. it was very strong. very moving.

>> reporter: philly sergeant jason somerville was one of about 25,000 from around the country in attendance last saturday and he's back again, off duty, no pay to respect and reflect. >> every single officer in attendance for officer ramos's funeral, in the back of their minds, i'm sure they were thinking this can be them. every time we get dressed, we put on this uniform and our shield to go out there and serve our community, within one day, you may be able to save a life deliver a life or even give our own life within eight hours. >> reporter: and that memorial for officer liu is scheduled to begin less than an hour from now. the officers from our area say they will be lining up along the procession route and return back here later this afternoon. i'm matt delucia nbc 10 news. tomorrow in pike county pennsylvania, the man accused of killing a state trooper and injuring another during an ambush is scheduled for a preliminary hearing. eric frein is charged in the deadly shooting at the state

police barracks in blooming grove in september. police say frein was on the run for about seven weeks before investigators captured him. today we have done what we have promised. we have found and we have brought shane home. >> that was karen montgomery, mother of shane montgomery the 21-year-old westchester university student who went missing over thanksgiving. the family says dive crews recovered shane's body from the schuylkill river yesterday. tomorrow, the medical examiner is expected to officially identify the remains. crews found the body at the bottom of the schuylkill river. shane disappeared in the early morning hours of thanksgiving day after a night out with friends at nearby kildare's pub. the family tells us the discovery means shane has come home after this long search. >> in this community i don't

know that we can say thank you. i don't know if we can ever repay what this community did for our family. they were there every step of the way. >> police say they do not suspect foul play in shane's disappearance. the family has not released information yet about funeral arrangements. we will keep you posted. you can read more about the shane montgomery case, the statement from the family and the timeline of the search right now on our website, nbc10.com. this morning, philadelphia police are looking for the gunman wanted for murdering a limo driver who had only been on the job for a week. the owner of the car service tells us a passenger taken to delancey street in west philadelphia shot his driver last night. the owner of the limo company also says the gunman stole a cell phone and about $100 in cash. police say they're interviewing the victim's girlfriend. she was inside the car and witnessed the shooting, but was not hurt. this is the third murder in

philadelphia so far in 2015. pennsylvania state police have captured one of two escaped ip inmates who broke out of a burkes county prison. timothy hostetter is back in prison. raymond martinez is still on the run. according to investigators, the men set off a fire alarm at the correction center on friday. they managed to escape and got away in a silver minivan. we have some new information butt a shooting in camden. nbc 10 has learned the name of the gunman who shot the woman and her father and then killed himself. police tell us marquez johnson slashed the tires of his ex-girlfriend's car in pennsauken early yesterday. she called her father to pick her up. after they drove off, investigators say johnson followed their car and opened fire hitting both of them. an officer then tried to pull johnson over after he sped through a red light, but johnson drove to the parking lot of cooper university hospital where he shot and killed himself.

while the woman is critical her father is in stable condition. still ahead, crews are making more progress in their search for victims and debris from the crash of the airasia jet. we'll have an update on the recovery effort. >> deserves a lot of credit. and we are learning more about a 7-year-old sole survivor of this small plane crash and the obstacles she had to overcome to save her own life. life's running out of shaving stuff. and thankfully being able to find backups.

however, we aren't seeing that steady and sometimes heavy rain that we had yesterday. the fog is an issue, though. nearby here at philadelphia international, they're seeing delays of over an hour so keep that in mind if you are headed out today. new this morning north korea is slamming the new sanctions imposed by the u.s. in a state-run news report a north korean official accused america of stirring up hostilities for no reason. on friday, the white house announced new restrictions on a number of north korean officials and organizations. north korea is denying it was behind the cyber attack against sony entertainment and the terror threats against movie theaters set to show the comedy film "the interview." the movie is about the fictional assassination of north korean leader kim jong-un. this morning at the vatican, pope francis named 15 new cardinals, selecting them from 14 different countries. the vatican says the move reflects the diversity of the church and its growth in asia

and africa. also, in an address to a crowd at st. peter's square, the pontiff made a surprise announcement, that he'll lead a meeting of all cardinals in mid february to talk about church reforms. we have new information in the search for the missing airasia flight. crews have recovered three more bodies. they also found a fifth piece of debris they say is from the wreckage. searchers have zeroed in on what they think is the fuselage of the plane. so far, 34 bodies have been recovered. that leaves 128 passengers and crew still missing. the flight disappeared one week ago on december 28th. the plane was leaving from surabaya, indonesia but did not make it across the java sea. meanwhile, in indonesia this morning, americans in surabaya are on alert. that's because the u.s. embassy has issued a warning about a potential threat against banks and hotels there associated with the u.s. officials say there is no

connection linking the missing airasia plane and the threat. today, back here in the u.s., we could learn more about the plane crash in kentucky that killed everybody onboard except a young girl. the ntsb is expected to arrive at the crash site later on this morning. 7-year-old sailor gutzer walked nearly a mile through the woods in dark and cold conditions with no shoes to find help at the first house she reached. relatives say sailor used the plane's burning wing to light a branch so she could find her way through woods. >> the little girl 7, 8 years old, standing there bleeding legs and all scratched up, arms scratched up, and she said her mom and dad were dead, and that she had been in a plane crash. >> here's what investigators know at this point. the pilot reported engine trouble, and then air traffic controllers lost contact. about 40 minutes after that, sailor made it to larry wilkins'

now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> and a good sunday morning. we are walking out the door to some rain this morning. also some fog. very mild conditions compared to this time yesterday. we're going to be mild this afternoon, feeling a lot like spring before we see those temperatures crash during the workweek. fog this morning. we're seeing reduced visibilities all across the area and more showers. we're seeing the rain falling right now. additional showers on and off throughout the day. not a washout like yesterday, but still bring the umbrella. we'll be mild and then we'll be really cold by the end of the workweek with high temperatures in the 20s. visibility right now down to a mile in atlantic city. down to a mile and a half in dover. reduced visibilities in the north as well. lancaster, down to a mile in allentown. outdoors it tells the whole story. we are socked in with some fog. we'll be like this for at least a few more hours. 44 right now in philadelphia

with that rain falling. winds out of the south-southwest at 7 miles per hour and it is eight degrees warmer than this time yesterday. temperatures across the region well above freezing, which is good news because we're seeing wed roadways. seeing some rain falling as well. 37 in allentown. 39 in lancaster. 44 in philadelphia. and in the 50s to the south and east. 54 in wildwood. future temperatures will climb to near 62 in philadelphia later on this afternoon. about 21 degrees above what is typical this time of year. 55 in mount pocono. so every spot warm. then we'll drop it overnight into the 30s. waking up tomorrow morning right around the freezing mark. mild today, but that is short-lived because we have cold weather coming in on monday. and then arctic air by wednesday, and thursday. and still that cold air stays with us friday, saturday sunday. so we'll see temperatures in the 30s. also in the 20s as daytime highs during your workweek you might want to plan on that. we are looking at some wet weather moving through. some light stuff right now.

on friday federal prosecutors announced that they are planning to seek the death penalty against paul ciancia, who is a salem county native. prosecutors claim the killing was premeditated. ciancia is accused of murdering a tsa officer and wounding three other people at l.a.x. he has pleaded not guilty to murder and related charges. a judge wants the case to be tried this year but that death penalty decision could delay it. jury selection is set to begin tomorrow in the boston marathon bombing trial. dzhokhar tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to setting off two bombs at the finish line of the 2013 marathon. the explosions left three people dead and more than 260 injured. tsarnaev is also charged with killing an m.i.t. police officer in the days following the attack. on friday a federal judge denied a defense request to delay the trial so that the defense attorneys could have more time to prepare. if convicted, tsarnaev could face the death penalty. the time right now is 9:26.

up along the procession route from the church to the cemetery. the police had turned their backs on the mayor. i talked with the officers here about that. they said they did not follow along with that and they tell me it's an unfortunate situation, but they don't feel that discord here in philadelphia. or our mayor michael nutter our police commissioner as well as our police department we work well in unison. the only thing we can do is hope and pray and wish the best for nypd as well as mayor de blasio. >> reporter: as we look here at gloucester township police tweeted out this photo a few minutes ago of various departments arriving in new york for officer wenjian liu's funeral, and that memorial service is scheduled to begin a little less than a half-hour from now. i'm matt delucia nbc 10 news. this morning, philadelphia police are looking for the

gunman wanted for murdering a limo driver. the owner of the car service tells us that a passenger taken to delancey street in west philadelphia shot his driver last night. the owner of the limo company also says the gunman stole a cell phone and about $100 in cash. this is the third murder in philadelphia so far in 2015. neighbors near the scene tell us they're disturbed by this kind of violence so early in the new year. >> we've had some issues on this 5400 block of de lance write for some years, but we were able to clean it up and it has gotten much better, much better.lancey for some years, but we were able to clean it up, and it has gotten much better, much better. kind of sad to see it occur on this block since it has turned around so greatly in the past. >> police say they are interviewing the victim's girlfriend right now. she was inside the car and witnessed the shooting but was not hurt.

barracks in blooming grove in september. police say frein was then on the run for about seven weeks until investigators captured him. trial is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning in philadelphia for a former iron worker's boss accused of racketeering. 73-year-old joseph dockerty is the last defendant in a group of 12 members of iron workers local 401. they've been charged by federal prosecutors. prosecutors say the members used violence and even arson, like a fire at the site of a quaker meeting house, to intimidate builders into using their union's labor on construction projects. the other 11 members in this group have all pleaded guilty. a u.s. medical worker exposed to ebola in west africa is headed to omaha, nebraska, for observation. the nebraska medicine center says the unidentified patient is not ill and not contagious but the health worker was exposed to the deadly virus while working in sierra leone, so this is a precaution. the center has treated three patients so far with ebola.

there have been many stories of survival in the ebola outbreak the spread of the deadly disease is not under control. that's why one doctor from philadelphia is heading back to west africa this week. nbc 10 was there when dr. trish henwood with the hospital of the university of pennsylvania left for liberia in october. she has since returned but will go back again to treat ebola patients. dr. henwood tells me her work this time around will be focused on a rapid response team that will seek out the victims who can't get to the medical facilities. >> the idea that the outbreak in certain areas is improving, but then there are these remote places in different villages that are more isolated. very difficult to get to them. you know maybe several hours. walk or hike through the jungle. >> dr. henwood will be in liberia through early february. she is spending time with her family, who now lives in chester county. still ahead, the clock is

at 9:42, happening now, drivers are paying more to be on the road. a 5% toll hike went into effect at midnight. the new rates apply to easy pass and cash customers. the most common toll for a passenger vehicle will increase from $1.04 to $1.09, that's for easy pay customers. this by the way, is the seventh time in seven years there has been a toll increase in pennsylvania. tomorrow, real housewives of new jersey star teresa guidice will begin serving her prison

sentence. last spring guidice pleaded guilty to hideing assets from bankruptcy creditors. her sentence is 15 months. she'll serve her time at a federal prison in connecticut. guidice's husband joe is also facing jail time for related charges. his sentence will not start until teresa is out. schilchill. that's part of sarah palin's response to peta. take a look at the photo. it shows palin's 6-year-old son trig stepping on the family dog to reach the kitchen sink. trig has down syndrome. the picture was accompanied with a caption that said may 2015 see every stumbling block turned into a steppingstone on the path forward. the dog's name by the way, is jill. peta said palin had no apparent sympathy for the dog and called
