right now at 6:00 caught in the middle of a deadly pileup. >> i'm spinning around four or five times. other cars are hitting that car and hitting me as well. >> first, accident after accident. now the cleanup, and flooding concerns. plus the threat of a refreeze. nbc 10 first alert coverage starts now. and these are the pictures many of us woke up to this morning on nblz 10 news today and on the nbc 10 news app. a 56-vehicle pileup. crews reopened the schuylkill of expressway at the gulf mills exit this afternoon after drivers were stuck there for more than seven hours.
but now that the freezing rain has moved out the first alert team is tracking two more weather threats. our meteorologists are all over this evening. glen, tells us what's out there right now. >> the last of the showers. the heaviest of the rain has moved past. the icing is long gone at least for the beginning part of this storm. you can see the yellows and reds. that's the heavy rain that fell this afternoon. and there it is this morning. that pink is the freezing rain. and within minutes of it starting, that's when we had that accident down on the expressway. you can see the last of the showers moving through now. there is a flood warning for much of the area until 2:00 a.m. there are some creeks that are out of their banks. there's localized flooding and pondsing from the rain. the heaviest rain fell along the
i-95 corridor. up to two inches of rain close to three in parts of newcastle county in dell aware. we continue to have the first alert because of the road and creek flooding. we have more showers this evening. and the refreeze threat for tomorrow morning. brittany ship has more on that. >> that's right. glen that's our next big concern is the refreeze threat. the temperature is going to be very important with that. we did warm into the 40s today. tonight closer to 9:00 p.m. we'll see temperatures getting close to the freezing mark at the lehigh valley. 33 in pottstown. still above freezing for philadelphia. we won't have to worry about areas near philadelphia freezing until after midnight. closer to 1:00 a.m. on monday. you can look at millville. right at 32 degrees. this is at 1:00 a.m. as we head into the early morning hours closer to 5 kamm. most of our area is below freezing. if we have any leftover moisture we could see it refreezing.
especially in the poconos where the temperatures drop into the low 20s. late morning hours on monday we will warm above freezing so the threat concern will go down. early morning tomorrow, if you are heading out for parades or errands or each going to work on mlk day, take it easy. tonighting 39 at 8:p.m. we'll have the full seven-day forecast coming up. >> back to the video. the icy conditions creating chaos here. two chain reaction accidents closed the roads for hours. this was the scene on 476 in broomal. two people died. a couple of cars crashed into a jack knifed tractor trailer. and people sat for hours while crews cleaned it up. >> three and a half hours. we're trying to go to florida.
>> several people were hurt. the road reopened at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon after being closed for six hours. here are the latest numbers from investigators. one person was killed on i-76 near gulf mills prompting the highway to be shut down in both directions for hours. 56 cars were involved and 30 people were injured. nbc 10's matt delushia live near the scene where it happened. you talked to people who were trying to avoid that crash. >> reporter: in some cases, jim, that was pretty tough especially because the side roads were just as lik slick and a lot more crowded. look here. i-76 at gulf mills. you can see a very different picture tonight, almost 12 hours after the crash. traffic is back to normal. but driver i have been talking to today are being more cautious after seeing what happened here this morning. >> it was dangerous. you had to really be careful. >> reporter: drivers recount the icy conditions while emergency workers spent more than seven
hours cleaning up this mess on web i-76. traffic on both sides of the highway was smut down as a 56 vehicles involved were pulled apart and taken away. >> people in general think they can drive faster and these conditions and shouldn't be doing that snoork. >> reporter: mark cutler found himself trying toy avoid 76 most of the day. drivers and passengers who were stuck could do nothing but wait and find another route. it took more than four hours just to reopen unlane. >> as we got up north, it got tougher. i don't know which way to go. might have to turn around. >> reporter: with so many injured police brought in a bus to take them to the hospital. as the day went on conditions improved but even off the highway drivers had little luck. greg washington slid his car into another. >> bad. reasonable bad. i wanted to get home. i was just going to the supermarket zmoor others waited for somewhat better weather.
>> marion called us this morning at 8:00 and woke us up and told us not toly. so we stayed home and relaxed. >> reporter: because there is that concern of a possible refreeze with all this rain that's out on the roadways right now, we did see businesses putting salt down in park pag lots and sidewalks. i've just called penn dot. i've been told upwards of 180 crews will be all the salting the major roads like i-76 overnight into the morning rush. live nbc 10 use news. >> randy gyllenhaal continues our coverage live in storm force 10 tracking road conditions in the lehigh valley. what are you seeing out there. >> we are driving along route 22 in allentown. this was the location of a tractor trailer rollover earlier this morning amid those dangerous ice conditions. right now you can see the
traffic is significantly better. roads are moving. you see the reflex on the surface of the pavement. it is stillity wet out here, still raining but nothing like the ice we hadderier this morning. penn dot in the lehigh valley is telling me icing could occur overnight especially over bridges and in higher elevations. they say the biggest threat will be in the poconos as it gets coldser. temperatures right now pretty warm in the lehigh valley. live in storm force. >> we just got video of a road closed because of flooding. this is beaver dam road in bristol bucks county that you can see behind me. crystal has been tracking the flooding around the county. denise, tell us what you are seeing. >> we have been looking for flooding in philadelphia and south jersey. conditions are improving but the folks here in this south jersey neighborhood are dealing with roads covered in flood water making them inpassable.
this area in hartford on unionville road is shut down on mount laurel. in philadelphia on mlk drive in fairmount park we found crews from the water department trying to unclog a storm drain where standing water was creating a hazardous condition for drivers. back live in burlington county light traffic and the fact that the rain has stopped for a couple of hours is helping the situation until that next concern, which is the possible refreeze. >> icy conditions forced septa to suspend bus service. they were dealing with delays on the rail system and trolley balls of high water conditions. transit in south jersey are

seriously. >> reporter: you saw this first on nbc 10, shots fired near the greenville property of vice president joe biden. newcastle county police say saturday night at about 8:30 secret service agents heard shots fired and saw a car fly by the gates at a high rate of spooet speed. look. the bidens were out at the time. a person was arrested. at this point, they are dooig trying to determine if this person is has nothing to do with the shots fired. the biden's actual home is behind the gate and set a couple hunl yards away from the road. the vice president is set to speak monday morning otth at a martd mart day event. we'll let you know if he mentioned anything about this story happening near his home. in greenville delaware, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> i'm tracking a possible

>> it's an nbc 10 first alert weather day. a live look at the south street bridge over the schuylkill river. traffic is moving, but a lot of flooding to want out for. it's been a dangerous day on the roads. three are dead. many others who were injured have been taken to hospitals. >> brin more hospital treated the bulk of the victims, 15 people from the expressway crash brought here. all tell a similar tale one second driving on pavement. and then next drive on a sheeft ice. >> i'm spinning around four or five times. and other cars that hit me and
hitting them as well. >> my wife slowed down and saw an accident in front of her. and she stopped and the can rar into the back of her. >> reporter: five people treated at lankin. a total of 11 were treated at pay oly hospital. none of the injuries are life threatening. >> things mainly related to neck whiplash and extremities. you know as they go to brace themselves when they are falling forward in their vehicle. >> reporter: officials here add another five people not from car accidents but from slips and falls on icy sidewalks and driveways around their homes. in brin mar, gary nbc 10 news nbc 10 had crews in juj, pennsylvania and delaware showing you the goings on. at one point in morning all bridges were shut down because of icy conditions. on the pennsylvania side of the walt whitman bridge 27 cars
crashed because of ice. no serious injuries. dell dot trucks were 3u9ing down salt after the rains went through. nbc 10 drooev drove through several areas of atlantic county where temperatures quickly warmed up. >> well with it was the worst timing of all possible events. we had the cold roads, we had the rain move in right at sun rise. there was no snow at the start of this storm. and that is what led to that disaster this morning. see all that pink? that is freezing rain. some of it was on the heavy side for a while. then the rain turned in and the temperatures got into the 40s. and we now have the last of the showers trying to move through the philadelphia areas and leftover in chester county. not much left to the west beyond that. the flood warning continues for
much of the area. i-95 corridor and surrounding counties until 2:00 a.m. as you saw earlier, there are still some areas that are flooded. local flooding on streets and rivers. and one of the reasons, all this rain over two inches in florence township new jersey. trend ton, almost two. williamstown, about an inch and a half. and delaware close to two inches and smyrna and dover. newcastle county airport, 1.6. in pennsylvania makefieldtownship close to two inches and kenneth square over one. we continue to have this first alert. there will be flooding during the evening hourls. you've got watch out if you are headed outside for any kinds of driving. and then the next issue we have to deal with is the potential for a refreeze in the morning. we're not going to see these roads dry out like we often do after a storm. meteorologist brittany ship has more on the temperatures. >> that is our next concern is
the refreezing. it's going to be at different times, that possibility, for different areas. so at least through 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. for the north and west areas, lehigh valley poconos, we won't see our temperatures dropping down below freezing until after mid night. closer to the i-95 corridor we are thinking closer to 2:00 a.m. through 9:00 a.m. if you are closer to the color, there is a more of a window that's confined from 3:00 a.m. to 6 a.m. to see the refreezing. leftover moisture could refreeze on sidewalks and roads. be careful whether you are walking or driving. right now temperatures hoping us out, well above freezing 37 in allentown, quakertown. coatsville and same thing in kenneth square. 43 in philadelphia. 38 in trend ton. closer to the shore here temperatures in the low 40s.
45 at louis. same thing in dover. as we head into the rest of tonight, refreezing is going on the a possibility. temperatures in the poconos dropping to 27. blooe freezing down to 29. redding down to 30. trend ton, 32 northeast philly mid 30s for atlantic city. cape may and dover, all those are within the freezing threshold. we'll be an to safe side and give you a heads up and say be careful tomorrow morning. 29 in wilmington. our next issue is going to be the possibility of snow on wednesday. so keep checking back with nbc 10. we're going to keep monitoring that for you. for tonight a few showers, and a refreeze possible for north and west late tonight. temperatures in philadelphia down to 30 degrees. same thing for the suburbs. early icy spots a possibility. temperatures will be similar to what we saw today for the dye daytime highs. tomorrow windsy with a high of

temperatures going to be key overnight, right. >> yeah, we are certainly not going to get a repeat of this morning. a totally different situation this morning. we had very low temperatures overnight, 24 degrees for the low. then the rain moved in because a couple thousand feet above the ground it was too warm for snow. you just started with the rain. it froze immediately. there is the 7:00 a.m. radar. you can see how much of the area was getting the freezing rain. now we watch for the temperature. it's not going to go down to 24 like it did last night. so it's not necessarily going to
be widespread icing in the morning. but there will be some refreezing, especially on untreated surfaces. your driveway, your sidewalk, bridges and overpasses. that's where you want to look out for, and if you can sleep later and wait to go out blater because it is a holiday, the temperature will warm up into the 40s and there won't be any more rain or snow. there is a chance of some snow as we go into the seven-day forecast. that comes tuesday night or into wednesday. it's not looking like a major storm. but we certainly haven't had much snow this winter. >> not yet. the nbc 10 morning team will be hard at work working to track the changingw situation. tune in starting at 4:00 a.m. for latest first alert forecast and of course traffic. for now, that's all for nbc 10.
