right now on nbc 10 news today, dangerously cold temperatures and whipping winds. here's a live look at 15th and jfk in center city where folks are bundled up and the blowing snow will be with us for most of the day. down the shore in cape may, not exactly the best beach day.

folks here are also experiencing extreme temperatures making it feel like it's well below zero. at least we didn't wake up to this it could be a lot worse. this is a live picture from boston, where a foot of snow is expected to fall today, on top of what fell last night. this is new england's fourth winter storm in less than a month. so all things considered we're doing okay ear in the philadelphia region. good morning. welcome back to nbc 10 news "today." i'm rosemary connors. it's just after 10:00 on this sunday. let's get right to our forecast with meteorologist michelle grossman. michelle, looks like we've got a long week ahead, considering what we're dealing with this morning. >> we sure do. it's so cold this morning, we had the winds, and we're going to keep the cold in place. most of the workweek we rebound just a little bit, that's about it. a few chances for some snow. let's take a look outdoors. looking at brightening skies this morning. it is so cold that's the big weather story today. and we had a first alert weather day, with us through monday because we'll keep that cold air locked in place. and we're talking cold.

we're talking temperatures in the single digits. talking windchills well below zero and winds whipping near 50 miles per hour at times. so could see additional power outages. we've already seen some. right now we're looking at temperatures right around 11 degrees in philadelphia, 10 in horsham, 6 degrees in kennett square. 11 degrees in wrightston. cooler, colder freezing to the north and west. zero in mt. pocono 8 in allentown, 6 degrees in oxford. to the south and east we are looking at temperatures right around 11 in woodbine 10 at the atlantic city airport and in the teens in the beach haven. factor in the winds, it feels a lot colder than that. feels like 11 below zero in philadelphia. feels like minus 16 in wilmington. as you walk out this morning in reading, 16 below zero is what it feels like and feels like minus 14 in atlantic city. so dangerous cold here. we're not going to stop dangerous cold bundle up if you head out, especially if you're taking the kids out for an extended period of time. by lunchtime, mostly sunny.

by 3:00 p.m. 16 degrees, probably where we'll top it out at and 6:00 12 degrees. another frigid night tonight. we're looking at record-breaking temperatures and we'll wake up cold. and then we have a chance for snow monday night and tuesday. we'll talk about that coming up. >> the wind is to blame for a tree snapping and falling right on top of an apartment complex in philadelphia. nbc 10's jesse gary is live in east falls to show us what's happening there. and jesse, i'm guessing a lot of residents at that apartment complex are getting up and finally getting outside to take a look at that damage. >> rosemary that's right. some of them will have to get up and move their vehicles. and i'll tell you why. that's a crew from suron environmental. they're here to start assessing the situation and then to try to remove this tree. they need to get into this area where a lot of the parked cars are. some of the residents will have to come out and move their cars. particularly the cars that are right over here. they'll have to move those cars. let's go ahead and take a look at our video. this is the scene a little while ago. new video shot during the

daylight. you can really see the damage from this tree falling around 3:15 this morning. the falls villages apartment complex, this is the empress building. it has about the five units on one side. this tree kind of snapped and the high winds overnight, and fell on to the roof. lni says there is moderate danl damage to the roof. there is a hole but the residents were able to say. we talked to the woman who lives right below that upper unit. she said she heard noises before the damage. >> i heard a really loud cracking noise and a big boom about 3:00 a.m. thought something fell to the roof and it was the whole to the roof. i am very fortunate. god really protected me last night. he sure did. it could have been worse than it was. >> reporter: and renee alexander came out and took a look earlier this morning to see how bad it was and how close it came to her

unit. lni also going to come back out and take a look just to make sure everything is safe. they say there is no danger of collapse, no structural problems. and that's why the people were allowed to stay in the apartment, but they're going to come back out this morning. but right now, the headline, environmental is here on scene, will have these cars removed and begin assessing the situation as to how they can get that tree off the roof. live in east falls this morning, jesse gary nbc 10 news. >> thank you, jesse. nobody was hurt here when this tree fell on to a house in newtown square delaware county. firefighters rescued one person who was trapped inside the house. this was on spruce road. this happened around 12:15 this morning. the tree did damage the family's minivan, though. pico shut off power to the house so crews could remove the branches safely. we have been checking with pico this morning. the latest update they tell us there are about 2,200 outages right now. >> this morning, we are seeing some cancellations at philadelphia international airport. most are for flights going to and from new england, which has

gotten about 1 to 2 feet of snow. they're expected to get some more. and actually i've been checking online to see what's going on at logan. and it looks like their operations really aren't going to pick up at the airport until 2:00 this afternoon. so again, they're dealing with those strong winds and dealing with that blowing snow. at philly international, there are some delays. they're about 15 minutes or less. so, again, if you're trying to fly in and out of -- trying to fly into new england or you're picking up somebody who's trying to fly out of new england, it's going to be tricky. but other flights may be okay. the best thing to do is to check the status of your flight by calling 1-800-phl-gate. it's like a never-ending cycle for those folk who is live in new england. here is that live picture of boston, where the flakes are falling, the roads are snow covered. they are trying to dig out. logan airport, as i mentioned, they've received about 7 inches of new snow since midnight and about a foot is expected with

this storm that's going pobto be pushing through today. the massachusetts governor says he has the feelings as a lot of people this morning. >> i certainly share, i think, the same frustration that other people feel with respect to the ongoing blizzards of 2015 but the most important thing we can all do at this point is to be cautious and careful and patient. >> everybody's just fed up. today's snowfall adds to the more than 6 feet of snow that areas are still trying to remove from previous storms. people will also have to deal with the bone-chilling temperatures and wind gusts there could reach 75 miles an hour. new from overnight in our area investigators are looking into the cause of this row home fire. this started just before 1:00 this morning on berkeley street in philadelphia's germantown neighborhood. crews had the flames under control within an hour. nobody was hurt but a family of 7 is now out of their house. they are getting some help from the american red cross. across town overflightnight, a

bar shooting in cobbs creek left one man wound. police were on scene where a gunman outside of the bar shot into the bar, striking the victim. the victim is in stable condition at the hospital. police are now searching for that shooter. investigators tell us that they've been talking to witnesses and they plan to look at surveillance video from inside the bar. the deadline is here to sign up for insurance this year under affordable care act. we'll let you know where you can get some help if you need to enroll before time is up. and the philly phanatic wants to wave good-bye to winter and say hello to spring -- training. we'll tell you what the phillies are up to today. that's all coming up after the break.

all right. a frigid frigid sunday. we're going to be cold today, we're going to be cold monday. we're going to be cold most of the workweek. right now, these are the actual

air temperatures. it is 6 degrees in pottstown, reading, also lancaster. zero in mt. pocono 11 in atlantic city. look at this northwesterly flow right from canada and it's a strong wind so we're feeling that cold air locked in all day long. up to 48 in wilmington. 48-mile-per-hour wind gust in atlantic city. and they're sustained pretty high as well. factor in the winds and also the air temperature and it feels a lot colder than that. we're feeling well below zero in many, many spots. the good news is we had the snow last night, the snow squalls, the whiteout conditions. that's out of here. right now we're seeing some blowing snow the wind picking up the snow that fell last night. otherwise, clearing skies and we'll see mostly sunny skies later on this afternoon. otherwise, not warming up at all. we'll see winds gusting near 55 miles per hour. temperatures will top out around 15 degrees. so staying put in the teens, but feeling like below zero in many spots. we'll talk more about that. then we're tracking

record-breaking temperatures overnight lows tonight into monday. we'll do that in just a few minutes. >> today is the deadline to sign up for health insurance this year under the affordable care act. there is a fine if you don't have insurance. if you need to enroll there is some last-minute help available. independence blue cross will have its mobile enrollment center in bala cynwyd today. licensed sale agents will be on hand to answer questions and to help you sign up for a health plan. also federal officials say a glitch yesterday on the signup website, healthcare.gov, is now fixed. the problem affected applicants trying to verify their income information. still ahead, a scare for golfers after a plane makes a crash landing on the green. we'll have that story when we come back.

this morning. we are following a developing story in denmark. police say they killed the gunman responsible for two deadly shootings in the country's capital city of copenhagen. danish authorities believe that the gunman was inspired by

islamic radicalism and officials have also identified one of the victims. this was the scene outside of the synagogue overnight. authorities say a man opened fire killing one person and injuring two police officers. according to investigators, the same gunman is behind a similar attack that happened just hours earlier. the scene of that shooting was a cafe which was hosting a free speech event, featuring a controversial swedish artist. the artist had recently been threatened because of his cartoons of the prophet muhammad and was also said to be on an al qaeda hit list. the investigators say the gunman used an automatic weapon to shoot through the windows of that cafe. a 55-year-old danish documentary filmmaker was killed and three police officers were hurt there. authorities have not identified the shooting suspect. the accusations are already flying that a cease-fire agreement between ukrainian forces and russian-backed rebels was violated less than an hour after it went into effect. fighting continued right up until that midnight deadline and officials in ukraine claim that

the cease-fire was breached 50 minutes after it went into effect. both sides are supposed to start pulling back heavy weaponry over the next two weeks. the fighting began almost a year ago when ukraine's president was driven from power after months of protests. more than 5,300 people have been killed in the ongoing violence. take a look at this. back here in the u.s. two men are recovering after they survived this plane crash that happened at a golf course in utah. the single engine plane went down at valley view golf course. this is in latent utah. this happened yesterday morning. workers there helped the passenger to safety. emergency crews took him in for some treatment. the pilot was amazingly okay and didn't even need to go to the hospital. this morning, federal authorities are investigating the crash. all right. a good sunday morning. i'm meteorologist michelle grossman. such a cold morning today. here's a live look outside.

this guy is doing it right. he has the coat on the gloves the hat. he could use a scarf. if you know him, you want to buy him that scarf. if you head out today, we're looking at a very frigid morning. looking at dangerous cold weather and looking at windchills well below zero. so here is a look at your first alert weather day. we have it today and also on monday. because of the dangerous cold weather and also those winds. so just plan on that today, plan on it monday and most of the workweek, we're look vrg cold. dangerously cold and windy today. windchills well below zero. some spots feeling like 25 below zero. a look outside, the roads moving okay, at least the major roads. some may have a little snow on it from the blowing snow. 11 right now if philadelphia. mostly cloudy skies. it is dry. winds out of the northwest at 29 miles per hour. we're looking at temperatures at single digits 6 right now in reading, 6 in pottstown, 11 in philadelphia, 0 in mt. pocono we will laugh about this come summertime. 10 right now in millville and 11 in atlantic city.

you factor in the winds, it feels a lot colder than that. the winds are gusting, you can see this northwesterly flow right from canada and we are getting some very cold air. 48-mile-per-hour wind gusts in wilmington. up to 31 in trenton. 48-mile-per-hour wind gusts in atlantic city. going right through you as you step outdoors. bundle up as you step out. it feels mt. pocono. it feels like 16 below zero in lancaster. as we go throughout time ear, you want to bundle up maybe stay indoors if you can, watch a movie, watch nbc. we'll feel like 0 at 1:00 and like 17 below zero in mt. pocono this afternoon. then those temperatures will plummet once again, we'll be so cold tonight. extra blanket on the bed. as you wake up tomorrow morning, it will be frigid. start that car early. future weather, bitter weather today. we're not looking at snow but dry conditions it will be dry tonight, but continued cold tonight and also into monday.

and then things get a little tricky monday into tuesday. we are tracking a storm system that will bring us some snow monday into tuesday. so tuesday morning's commute may be not so great. plan on that. for today, we're looking at temperatures in the teens, 13 to 16 not going very far today and well below zero as we head throughout the afternoon. the dangerous cold continues, so does the wind. the wind will be a little better this afternoon but still this morning, gusting near 55 to 60 miles per hour. that's pretty unheard of this time of year. monday, mostly sunny, 19 degrees, there's your overnight low. that would be a record if we hit 1 degree. and then by tuesday, that morning snow 28 degrees. wednesday oob wednesday, another chance for snow, right around the freezing mark. a little balmy, 20 mostly sunny. saturday chance for rain and snow. 34 degrees. >> as long as we don't get those blizzard-like conditions in new england, i think we'll be right back. in the meantime code purple is in effect at least through today in new castle county delaware. that means that community

centers are offering short-term shelter and hot food to the homeless. the executive director of friendship house in wilmington tells us that they generally see about 150 people on a code purple day. they've had 21 code purples so far this year. that system that brought the snow squalls to our area overnight and of course the wind, well it's caused some similar conditions in indiana. snows and high winds, snow and high winds led to dozens of accidents on highways the there this weekend. at least five cars collided in this crash, then at a separate scene, nearly two dozen cars crashed. some of them going right off the road. when traffic was moving, it was at a crawl because of the whiteout conditions. all things considered we really haven't had to break out the snow blowers and shovels too much this season. pittsburgh, they got a little bit of snow over the weekend and they're also dealing with the bone-chilling temperatures. this was the scene yesterday as drivers had a little bit of a tough time out on the roads. overnight, they had those

just a few hours ago. pitchers and catchers report to camp on wednesday. the games start up two weeks from today, march 1st. by the way today in clearwater just in case you're wondering, the high temperature is expected to push 70 degrees. >> i think it's 70 in the studio. >> it is. it's pretty cold outside. >> everybody's houses i'm sure they've got the heat cranked up because it's one of those days. >> it's more than cold. it's frigid it's just hard to be outside. we're looking at temperatures right around 10 degrees in a lot of spots, we're looking at below zero windchills. here's a live look outside. look at these brave people skiing today. their face must be hurt going down that hill. as we go out the day, you want to bundle up and cover all your extremities. 11 degrees right now in philadelphia. minus 1 in mt. pocono 9 in wilmington and 6 in reading. factor in those winds, it feels like 14 below zero in pottstown and feels like 16 below zero in wilmington. so a far cry from 70 degrees that they're experiencing in clearwater. areas of blowing snow today. that would be about it.
