seven-day. we'll talk about that, too, coming up. a teenage boy shot in trenton is in critical condition. this happened around 1:00 on monmouth street. the victim suffered a chest wound. today, pennsylvania's top cop will find herself on the other side of the law. attorney general kathleen kane is expected to surrender to montgomery county district attorney's office to face charges that she leaked grand jury testimony. nbc 10's jesse gary is live outside of the courthouse in norristown. jesse, what's the attorney general saying about these charges? what's her reaction? >> reporter: rosemary, kathleen kane says she is not guilty and she will file these charges. the process to prove her innocence begins on the fifth floor of this building. she'll surrender to the detective's bureau at 1:30 this afternoon and be processed like anyone else. she's accused of leaking grand

jury testimony in an attempt to embarrass two former staffers. kathleen kane declined request for an on-camera interview but released a statement saying, i am very disappointed the district attorney has made the decision to pursue this case. i have maintained my innocence from the day these allegations started and continue to do so today. she says she will not resign her office. there are growing calls for her to tstep down, including some governor tom wolf. can she be forced out? we'll explore that in the next half hour. a scare in the air stopped a flight out of philadelphia from getting very far. we've got video from just inside the plane. nbc 10 received these images of sparksç coming from the wing o this american airlines flight. we received these images from a passenger on board. the flight was heading from philadelphia to seattle. skyforce 10 was over the scene

as the airbus 320 jet landed back in philly after just 40 minutes in the air. 145 passengers were on board. nobody was hurt. the other passengers were able to get on to another plane. federal authorities are now investigating. this morning, philadelphia police continue their search for two men who shot and robbed a bakery store owner. we first told you about this story as breaking news yesterday morning. the victim is in critical but stable condition. she was opening best cake kosher bakery at haverford and city avenues in the overbrook section of philadelphia around 6:00 yesterday morning. robbers shot her in the neck. it turns out this was the second time the bakery owner was robbed in just the past week. last friday she fought off her attackers. her regular customers are in disbelief. >> it's devastating for us. it's devastating for the community. these things do not happen in overbrook park. they do not. and they will not.

>> investigators say surveillance cameras at the scene were pointed the wrong way so they need witnesses to come ford to help the investigation. police have new clues in the case of an 11-year-old delaware county boy who went missing and was later found dead in darby creek. police say a tip call led them to an area off of glenn more avenue in glenolden yesterday. there they found laquan lattimore's bike and backpack, his clothes were inside his backpack. lattimore's body was found in the creek wednesday afternoon. before that he was last seen riding his bike monday in folcroft. the medical examiner has ruled his death an accidental drowning but the boy's family wants more answers about what exactly led up to his death. former eagles star irving fryar faces up to ten years in prison after he was convicted in a mortgage scam. a jury found him along with his mother guilty of conspiracy and theft by deception. prosecutors claim they masterminded a bank and mortgage

fraud scheme in burlington county. fryar played 17 seasons in the nfl, including three for the eagles. sentencing is set for october. as we prepare for the pope, we are taking a closer look at security for the papal visit. here's a live view of the ben franklin bridge which we've told you will be closed to cars during the visit next month. now the secret service is clearing the air about some rumors involving the bridge closure. the agency says there will be security on the ben but no checkpoints, no airport-style searches and no metal detectors for those walking across the bridge from camden into philadelphia for the papal weekend in late september. >> can't get every person out if there's going to be that volume of people, that's not plausible. >> as for center city, the secret service says the agency will provide a list of items you will not be allowed to bring with you into the secure zone. as soon as that list comes out, we will pass it along.

million homes are without electricity. back here in the u.s. in northern california, fire crews say they now have the destructive rocky fire 50% contained. over the last two weeks, the wildfire has destroyed dozens of homes and forced thousands of people to evacuate. fire officials say diminishing winds and water dropping helicopters are helping crews to quench the flames. as you just saw a moment ago, president obama is saying the wildfires are getting worse because of climate change. he made that comment yesterday while serving a conservation bill at the white house. he says global warming is sparking a longer and more intense wildfire season. >> one of the things we're trying to work on with congress is make sure we are able to properly fund firefighting efforts but also that we're engaged in the conservation planning to ensure that we're preventing fires from happening in the first place. >> dry conditions have added fuel to the wildfires in california, montana, arizona and

washington state. let's head to colorado where the convicted killer in the movie theater massacre will spend the rest of his life in prison without parole. >> we the jury do not have a unanimous final sentencing verdict on this count and we the jury understand that as a result the court will impose a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole on this count. >> as you just heard, the jury failed to reach a unanimous decision on whether james holmes should get the death penalty because of the lack of agreement, a judge to sentence holmes to life in prison that will happen at a hearing later on this month. the same jury convicted holmes of opening fire inside a suburban denver theater three years ago. yesterday, a woman known as juror 17 spoke about why the jury couldn't reach that unanimous decision. >> i understand one or two holdouts? >> one solidly. and two still sort of on the

i feel you on that one. college students are preparing to head back to campus soon. new sexual assaultç protection willing in place when they arrive for the fall sell interpret -- the fall semester. it's all thanks to a law spearheaded by bob casey of pennsylvania. it requires uniform reporting standards for sexual assaults on college campuses. schools will also need to provide clear guidelines to students outlining sexual violence policies. >> give not only new students who could become victims the information they need to act when they are a victim but also to prepare the whole campus or community to take steps to prevent this in the first place. >> this is the first school year by the way that the law will be in effect. next, thieves are targeting women as they dine inside bars and restaurants in our area.

was killed while trying to help out a driver. according to authorities, a man saw a car driving the wrong direction on revere street in mayfair. he yelled to try to alert the driver. the car stopped and police say a passenger jumped out and stabbed the man. right now, officers are searching for that driver and passenger. and also new from overnight, a man thought to be sleeping was found stabbed to death in somebody's backyard. nbc 10 was on the scene on o oakford street. the woman who noticed the man in her backyard believed he was sleeping. homicide detectives are now looking for clues in this case. pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane is expected to surrender to face criminal charges this afternoon. nbc 10's jesse gary is live outside of the montgomery county courthouse in norristown. and jesse, kane says she will

not resign but can she be forceç from office? >> reporter: she's elected to the office of attorney general. she says she's not guilty. she could be, could be, forced from office by the state senate here in pennsylvania through impeachment. that would require a simple majority vote of the senators. we've done some digging. we're finding there's no will to do that at least not at this time. let's take a look at our video. the attorney general is charged with breaking the law by leaking secret grand jury testimony in an attempt to embarrass two former staffers. a critical philadelphia newspaper article provided the motivation for a revenge plot. that's according to the montgomery county district attorney. >> she lied repeatedly about her own actions, about the law and about her matters simply to support her version of events. >> reporter: in response, kathleen kane released a statement saying i intend to defend myself vigorously against these charges.

free. this after a philadelphia judge overturned convictions tainted by allegations of police corruption. you may recall the six narcotics officers who went to trial for corruption. a jury aquited them earlier this year but any evidence of corruption that was uncovered during the investigation can be used in court subsequently by any suspects the officers arrested. an assistant defender at the defender association of philadelphia tells nbc 10 that he has filed 1,400 petitions asking for new trials for suspects convicted in drug cases involving those six officers who were charged but later cleared. so far, 158 of those drug convictions about been tossed out. this by the way is the largest single dismissal of drug con vicks in philadelphia history. it brings the total number in this scanned toll more than 500. trouble on the rails. patco says it's found a part defect that's causing trains to suddenly stop.

officials say it's happened 43 times from may to july, causing operators to remove passengers from trains. they have to get them off if you're traveling between philly and south jersey, they have to get on another train or the bus. the problem is in the brake pads of the older cars. he also says the agency is working on some temporary solutions. patco is in the process of upgrading its older cars. in may, they followed out six refurbished cars to help give commuters a more comfortable and state-of-the-art ride. hard to believe, but we are now less than 50 days away from the pope's arrival in philadelphia and hisç historic visit will involve a piece of presidential history. the gettysburg lectern. this is the same podium that abraham lincoln used to deliver his gettysburg address. pope francis will use it at his independence mall appearance in september.

another beautiful one on sunday. we look at that forecast coming up. today in new york city, teams will begin testing all the cooling towers in the bronx in an attempt to cut off a deadly outbreak of legionnaires disease. mist have been linked to the outbreak. all of them will be tested within the next two weeks and decontaminated if necessary. the centers for disease control and state officials have sent staff to help with the massive task. >> this is an all hands on deck situation. we need all of our partners at every level of government to help address the situation. >> health officials insist they have a handle on the outbreak as the rate of newly diagnosed cases is slowing but so far, 101 people have been infected and 10 people have died. a town hall in new jersey has turned into a cat house and no one's complaining. >> some of our residents come in and specifically ask for him.

>> he follows me right to the door. >> reporter: the door of the middle township municipal building. >> he actually will sit and head butt the door until someone lets him in. >> reporter: he is courthouse, a cat named for the cape may courthouse section of this community. >> just about everybody knows him. >> reporter: for more than a year -- >> he first has breakfast in the tax assessor's office. >> reporter: he's chosen to spend business hours -- >> he'll get in amongst all the paperwork. >> reporter: pitching in or roaming around town hall. >> he's in charge around here. >> he'll go to our municipal court, sit up on the bench with the judge. >> reporter: what happens if you need to use that calendar? >> i'll find something else to do rather than make him move. >> reporter: normally i would think only service animals are allowed inside. >> correct, yes. he's been welcomed by the governing body. he's a mascot. >> reporter: courthouse does have a home right across the street. >> he's a community cat.
