we'll get your first alert forecast neighborhood by neighborhood. >> it's just about 6:00 a.m. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today. i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris cato. hope you had a great weekend. we certainly did weatherwise. it will be warm out there later today. nbc 10's first alert meteorologist bill henley is standing by. >> sun's not up yet. another 21 minutes before sunrise. the temperatures are cooling and we do have cool numbers, 57 in allentown, pottstown is in the 50s, 63 in wilmington. millville has just dropped into the 50s right now. and still cooling down, northeast philadelphia is at 65, 68 at philadelphia international. nice and comfortable in the 50s. this afternoon we could see scattered clouds and the possibility of late-day showers and thunderstorms. before those storms pop up, temperatures climb to near 90 degrees this afternoon. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i'm back in ten minutes to show you where the

storms are most likely and where they will not be hitting. right now, let's get a check of the first alert traffic on this monday morning. jessica? >> bill, what we're watching right now is skyforce 10 over top of a scene on the blue route on the northbound side where you can see they're allowing one lane of traffic to move through the area as they have it allç blocked off with an overturned dump truck in the area. that one lane scooting by, really pushed over into the shoulder. we have a huge backup behind that scene as well. as we head on over to my maps, i can show you how to get around. reports from skyforce 10 is that it's about a mile backup behind that scene. we're at 47 minutes, which is normally about a 10-minute trip from 95 to the schuylkill expressway. average speeds 20 miles an hour. in broomall, your best bet so far for the morning is to take 252. that runs parallel to that scene. that will be your best bet.

you'll be stuck in a half hour delay, at least so far for this morning. in the next ten minutes, we'll have updates for you. >> we're following breaking news out of trenton. police are on the scene of a shooting. here's a live look at robling and washington. police tell us someone shot three victims, all men, two shot in the back. we do not know their condition or a motive. the shooter is still on the loose. 6:02 now. this morning, france paid tribute to three americans and a british man month took down a gunman on a train bown for race. president francois hollande placed the highest award. they were traveling from amsterdam to paris on friday. a gunman opened fire on one of the trains but his automatic rifle jammed and that's when the heroes sprang into action.

>> he hit me on the shoulder said, let's go. alek came up, grabbed the gun out of his hand while i put him in a choke hold. >> it was gut instincts. >> i saw them get up, those are my close friends. i couldn't let them go alone. >> authorities have identified the gunman as ayoub el khazzani. a 26-year-old from morocco. a french prosecutor tells nbc news that investigators are looking into whatç el khazzani was part of a bigger network. a legionnaires scare on west chester university campus forced officials to shut off water to several buildings. >> reporter: it's especially important to get all the precautions out of the way because of students coming to class later on this morning. there were ten buildings here on

campus that were found to have legionella bacteria, including main hall here. these bacteria were found in the hot water systems of the buildings. westchester university saying it began treating the units this weekend, that meant turning off the water and super chlorinating the systems to kill the bacteria. the levels found are not high enough to warrant immediate concern but this can be a deadly form of bacteria, because inhaling it can cause a severe form of pneumonia known as legionnaires disease. the last update provided by the university was on friday. the fall semester begins today. students are on campus now. the chester county health department told the school there's no need to curtail activities. we're follow this one for you. for now we're live in westchester, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. 6:04 now. new from overnight, fire destroyed a home in mantua township, gloucester county. it brook out about 11:30 on

holly brook drive. investigators say it appears the fire started on the second floor. no reported injuries. cause of fire is still under investigation. the death of an off-duty philadelphia police officer has revived concern over a dangerous stretch of road in roxborough. rafael ali, a ten-year veteran of the force died late saturday night when his pickup truck slammed into a tree on henry avenue. according to investigators, ali was speeding when he hit the curve. residents in this area say drivers often go too fast. >> being a wide, multiple lane road, people think they can go faster. the curves pop out ofç nowhere >> it's like a racetrack here. >> it's not a curve you want to take at 60 miles an hour. >> investigators believe ali may have been asleep when he crashed because there were no tire mark on the pavement, indicating he never hit the brakes. they say alcohol was not a factor. ali leaves behinded two children, including a daughter who just turned 10 yesterday.

just about six minutes past 6:00. this is the man that police in camden county need your help finding this morning. investigators say he stole computers and cash from a business along federal street early thursday morning. anyone who recognizes him is asked to call camden police. from our delaware bureau, the city of wilmington is being watched by a group of guardian angels. the unarmed citizens watch group started in the late '70s. yesterday, a chapter from baltimore arrived in wilmington. one local man is leading the grupp. he called for the local group of the guardian angels after residents say nothing is being done. justin wilson was hit in the head by a large piece of debris from another car yesterday at pocono international speedway. his car slammed into a wall. he was air lifted from the

raceway with a serious head injury. >> indy cars are inherronly pretty dangerous with the open cockpit. we know we go out there every day taking that risk with the head exposed. the nose coming from another car hit him in the head. that's a big piece of body work to hit someone in the head. >> wilson is in a coma in critical condition. >> the chester upland school district is expected to release financial recovery plans. the district is currently operating under a $20 million deficit. the plan includes spending cuts across the board, including charter schools and reimbursements to its students. a delaware county judge will hear the proposal and make the final decision. the district's financial crisis has been ongoing for more than a decade. >> one month from today, september 24th, pope francis will be in washington, d.c. two days aheadç of his arrival in philadelphia for the world meeting of families. event organizers will release an online guide called the papal playbook. we told you this was coming last week.

the papal playbook, when that's released. there's also information about the pope's visit on as well. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 6:09. a really great start to this monday. there are changes ahead, after a cool start we'll heat this up afternoon, more so than what we saw over the weekend. close to 90 degrees today. humidity increases a little bit. with the heat around, we could see showers and thunderstorms. already tracking some to the west. and we are watching the temperatures fall at this hour, 68 degrees in philadelphia. that's 2 degrees warmer than yesterday, but still nice and comfortable. pocono mountains, view from jim thorpe. you can see low clouds and some spots of fog. the bigger problem in parts of new jersey, that fog will disappear as temperatures climb. belmar a quarter mile visibility. it was down to a quarter mile in wrightstown but it has improved. five miles there.ç

a few clouds heading into wilmington. the clouds you see in western pennsylvania, they'll arrive this afternoon. there are isolated showers. those showers will be building. scattered late-day showers for the pocono mountains, allentown and reading. there's a chance norristown and doylestown we'll see them, look at the upper 80s for mount holly, cape may. middle 80s for rehoboth and atlantic city 87 degrees today. near 90 for drexel hill and philadelphia, wilmington 86 degrees. a chance of an evening shower but we may be shower-free in philadelphia. we'll go through the futurecast, hour by hour when i'm back in ten minutes. 6:10 now. nbc 10's jessica boyington was just telling us about a situation on the blue route the last time we spoke with her. >> we've launched skyforce 10 to check it out. all lanes have just begun to get re-opened. let's get you an update. jessica? >> chris and tracy, this accident scene aaround the blue route in broomall on the

northbound side. we had just a moment ago the shoulder, the right-hand shoulder getting through on the northbound side. right now, you can see this is a live picture of the backup. reports of that, just over a mile or so. firth out, take route 320 or you can take 252. the drive time is typically 13 minutes at this time of morning. we're adding a good chunk of time to your route. use those alternates. they'll do you good this morning. the pa turnpike, 22 minutes from route 1 up to valley forge. as for mass transit, no problems for new jersey transit or patco. there is shuttle bus service between woodbourne and trenton this morning. tragedy strikes twice. two different air shows, two deadly crashes. this morning, details and new

the time is 6:15. these are new pictures of the moments when a jet crashed on to a highway during an air show in britain on saturday. a crane will remove the wreckage. the death toll is up to 11 and could grow higher. the pilot is in critical condition. this crash and other air show disasters are raising questions about whether air show stunts are too dangerous. >> for thrills. looking for something that looks

like, oh, my goodness, how is he going to pull out of that? sometimes they don't. >> and on the heels of the british tragedy, authorities in switzerland are looking into another air show crash that happened on sunday that killed a pilot and burned a building there. a louisiana state trooper is in critical condition after being shot in the head. the trooper was responding to reports of an erratic driver in a pickup truck yesterday. the trooper found the trecje( @c differe ditch and the person in the truck started shooting. morgan's wife megan was his girlfriend at the time of the devastating crash on the new jersey turnpike. his wife told "people" magazine after almost losing tracy in that crash, she's more grateful than ever to be married to the

love of her life. how much of us can say we delivered in shore traffic? not many of us. look at this, a monmouth couple got stuck in traffic over the weekend. the baby couldn't wait. dad pulled over, called 911 and two women who happened to be emts, they were at a nearby bar, they heard the mother screaming and ran over to help. it wasn't long before bella rose came into the world. both parents say she's healthy and doing fine. 6:17. let's get you updated on that blue route situation. >> let's see if things are clearing up there now some. nbc 10's jessica boyington is watching that. jessica? >> chris and tracy, it's true, we have relief on the blue route on the northbound side approaching broomall. you can see brake lights and backup. this drive time was about a 50-minute trip a few minutes ago. now we're going to 22 minutes.

and the mets, not all that likely we'll see showers. just a slight chance around the beginning of the game we could see showers roll through. mostly it's just beginning to be clouds, some sunshine, 83 degrees at 7:05. by later in the day, the clouds are hanging out, 78 degrees with the southerly wind at 8 miles an hour. the southerly winds a little more humid today. no showers just yet. later this afternoon, this is what we'll be watching. the hour by hour future weather shows, scattered clouds at times, 1:00 this afternoon, no showers just yet. in central pennsylvania, that line moving eastward will look like it's starting to rain a little bit in lancaster county and western berks county, this is updated information. it's looking less impressive in the latest computer run. there's a possibility of late-day showers into the evening hours, especially areas north and west. you may stay completely dry in philadelphia, too.

middle to upper 80s to near 90 degrees this afternoon. the storms move out. the humidity comes down. looks like we have a nice tuesday. 86 degrees. not just tuesday. look at wednesday, thursday, friday. really comfortable with low humidity and temperatures in the lower 80s for thursday. 84 on friday and then heating up into the upper 80s but still nice for the weekend. 20 minutes past 6:00 right now. it's not unusual for hundreds of people to line up to hear former president jimmy carter speak. yesterday, though, he taught sunday school, something he's done hundreds of times. wait until you hear what he had to say. there's a new push to make baseball safer, not for the players, but for the fans.

phillies taking the field tonight hosting the mets. first pitch 7:05. meteorologist bill henley says there could be a few showers around at that time but the game should be a safe bet for the phils tonight against the mets. better protection could be coming for fans at major league baseball parks across the country. that's after separate incidents over the weekend involving fans getting hit by foul balls. a woman sitting above the detroit tigers dugout was carried out of the stadium after being hit. another woman was hit near the chicago cubs dugout. tigers pitcher justin verlander is among a group pushing for tighter safety regulars at mlb ballpa ballparks. you'll see an ad by chase utley today, just days after he was traded to the los angeles dodgers, utley bought this ad to thank the people of if for their support. he says he will never forget 2008, the year he led the team to the world series title.

and jessica boyington with your first alert traffic. so far this morning, we've had a we're starting to see this clear out of the way. we're looking at 59 around academy road and around cottman. two vehicles pulled over on to the right-hand shoulder that southbound drive time starting to creep up just a little bit. we have an accident on the schuylkill. i'll tell you where that is coming up at 6:30. let's get a check on the forecast with meteorologist bill henley. we have sunshine and a few scattered clouds. that's a live view from center city where those clouds, not producing any rain drops, you can see a little glow on the buildings in center city. sunshine will be on beauty and give us a warmer day today, we'll be near 90 degrees this afternoon. later on we'll be watching for showers, possibly thunderstorms. right now we're just watching the temperatures come down. it's in the 50s in chester

spring, kennett square. washington township also dropped down to 59 degrees. kathleen kane heads to court, not to prosecute but to face prosecution today. katy zachry is in norristown. katy, what is the judge expected to decide today. >> it's a preliminary hearing. the judge will decide if there's enough probable cause presented that the case will go to trial. coming up after the break, we'll talk about some of the specifics that will be addressed inside court. because they're heart healthy because they're good for kids. and granddads and everyone else in the family. everything we do is because of what really matters most. the goodness of oats and the people we love.

umbrella later on today. we'll tell you the best window for when you may want to be carrying that umbrella with you. good morning. welcome to nbc 10 news today. i'm chris cato. >> i'm tracy davidson. 6:30. 67 degrees outside. meteorologist bill henley has his first alert forecast for this monday morning. bill? >> sun is up. we'll see a warmer day after a beautiful weekend. the temperatures have cooled down this morning, 50s and 60s. 59 in pottstown and millville, allentown is 57 degrees while at 62 in trenton, it is 65 in northeast philadelphia. we do have a few clouds moving through. these are not the shower producer, late this afternoon we could see scattered showers but not everybody is going to see that wet weather. sunshine, 71 degrees at 8:00. look at the warmup, up to the low 80s by 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 this afternoon, 87 degrees. we'll be flirting with that 90 degree mark. a few more clouds at 2:00. no shine of showers until we get into the late evening, late

afternoon and evening hours. we'll go through the futurecast hour by hour to show you which areas will get those showers when i'm back in ten minutes. right now it's a monday morning. let's see how the traffic is moving. jessica boyington is standing by with your first alert traffic. >> the blue route situation, traffic moving through the area around broomall. we still have police activity on the scene but it's moving through. the drive times are back down where they should be. good news there. we are watching a tow truck here and a disabled vehicle being pulled out of the way. that's at academy.ç 1 minutes from woodhaven road up towards the vine street expressway. average speeds 38 miles per hour. we have an accident around girard avenue on the westbound side of the schuylkill expressway. we're already starting to see the rush hour traffic and volume. now we're up to 15 minutes from the drive time headed westbound from the vine to the blue route. if you have to take mass transit, no problems so far. septa will be shuttle busing

service between woodbourne and west trenton. and septa's elwyn train is running late as well. kathleen kane is charged with leaking grand jury information and then lying about it. nbc 10's katy zachry is live in norristown. katy, what can we expect today in court? >> that's right. pennsylvania's top prosecutor will be at the defendant's table today, her preliminary hearing scheduled for later this afternoon right inside the montgomery county courthouse behind me. attorney general kathleen kane has refused to resign, saying she did nothing wrong. she was recently charged with leaking grand jury information to a philadelphia newspaper. prosecutors say she did that in an attempt to embarrass two former staffers who kane thought released information that was critical of her. >> i am innocent of any wrongdoing. my defense will not be that i'm the victim of an old boy's network or otherwise.

my defense will that be i broke no laws of this commonwealth. period. >> reporter: now, this all stems from kane's review of how the jerry sandusky child sex abuse case was handled by her predecessor and his prosecutor. she says during that time she uncovered e mays from jjs and prosecutors that included pornography, bigotry and racial insensitivi insensitivity. kane also his her rivals manufactured the charges against her to get her out of office as well as to conceal those incriminating e-mails. reporting live in norristown this morning, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. 6:33. 67 degrees. breaking news from overnight, stocks tumbled in trading on a number of asian markets following last çweek's plunge wall street. jep's nikkei dipped to its lowest point in two years. exchanges in south korea also sank.

and that news from asia, not welcome because we all know what happened on wall street on friday. investors are bracing for another possible drop today. the dow fell on friday, 531 points. nbc 10 talks with financial adviser robert wilson about what that downturn means for your money. look, the market went down over 500 points. that's about 3%. but this is nothing like, let's say, a black monday in 1987 when there was a 22% drop. everybody should take a breath, realize it's not the end of the world but do think about calling your adviser just to say and take a gut check, what's our next plan here? the only thing that could protect you in times of uncertainty, let's face it, in the market, every day is uncertain. the only thing that could protect you is your discipline. nbc 10 knows a lot of you are watching this, concerned about your 401(k). we'll be watching the opening bell for you at 9:30 to the close of the business day at 4:00 p.m.

track breaking developments on the nbc 10 news app. it's a free download at as 13,000 students return for fall semester, west chester university is dealing with a health scare. the bacteria that causes legionnaires disease was found in the hot water system on ten build on campus. a worker tested positive for that disease last month. university treated it with high levels s of chlorine over the weekend. legionnaires is not contagious but if the bacteria isn't held, it can cause a deadly form of pneumonia. 6:35. and while a lot of families are prepare fog see the pope, one family in delaware county is not just excited but busy beyond compare. their goal is to serve the faithful.ç

afternoon. keep an eye on the sky later today. some areas will get showers,ç possibly thunderstorms. not everybody will see them. 54 right now at mt. pocono, northeast philadelphia. sunshine is 65 degrees and 63 in atlantic city. pretty start on lake wallenpaupack. those clouds will thin out. you'll get a lot of sunshine in the pocono mountains. later this afternoon we could see showers move past the lake and other spots for areas mainly north and west. satellite shows high cloudiness in wilmington and delaware. we've seen a few scattered clouds in philadelphia. as the clouds of western pennsylvania that have the potential to give us some showers. we've soon a few sprinkles really in western pennsylvania. that little bit of energy will be moving to the east as the temperatures in our area climb. at lunch time we'll be in the 80s. partly sunny skies at that hour, during late afternoon hours we'll be watching to the west where showers and thunderstorms

develop. doesn't look like they'll arrive until the evening commute for reading, allentown into chester county, steering clear of philadelphia. philadelphia may stay completely dry as we head into the evening hours. showers really falling apart. just a chance you'll run into showers or thunderstorms. most of the day dry, 80 degrees in the pocono mountains. upper 80s for allentown and reading. 88 the high temperature for trenton. a chance of scattered showers in doylestown and norristown late this afternoon and this evening. but at the shore it stays dry. you'll see plenty of sunshine for atlantic city, cape may and rehoboth. inland, close to 90 for drexel hill and philadelphia. wilmington, a high of 86 degrees. look at the seven-day forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. the last thing you want to hear if you take the schuylkill expressway on a monday morning. >> there's an accident. let's check in with jessica boyington. >> traffic is moving by the scene here, chris and tracy.

we're on schuylkill on the westbound side. right around girard avenue. we have a few vehicles involved. over into the left-hand lane. traffic is squeezing by to the right. we have a 17-minute drive time from the westbound side. that's typical. it's not ad ing too much for this time of the morning. from the vine street expressway to the blue route, adding five minutes. as for 95, between academy road and cottman avenue. we have a 21-point drive time on the southbound side. you can see two vehicles involved here and tow trucks on the scene. traffic still moving by. heading out the door on the 42 freeway in new jersey, we're starting to see the increase where we would on the northbound side between 55 up towards the walt whitman bridge, adding two or three minutes or so heading to philadelphia or possibly to 295 in that interchange. the walt whitman bridge is doing okay, the tac pal and the betsy. >> jessica, 6:40.

gives freshman players advice on getting out of trouble. >> if you all got a crew, you've got to have a fall guy in the crew. now, i let my home boys know. you all want to keep rolling like this, i need to know who will be the fall guy, who will be driving. because you all not going to do the right stuff now, right? i have to teach y'all how to get around this stuff, too. if you're going to have a crew, one of them fools got to know he's going to jail. >> the nfl released the following statement on carter's comments reading in part, this is an unfortunate and inappropriate comment made by cris carter during the 2014 nfc rookie symposium. the comment was not representative of the message of the symposium or any other league program. and the nfl has removed that video from its website. carter is an analyst at espn. and that network also released a statement condemning his remarks. rutgers university officials say hackers are partly to blame

in the pacific northwest. despite a massive week-long effort to stop the flames, firefighters are having a tough time getting upper hand. air tankers, smoke jumpers and 30,000 crews have been deployed. it's taking a toll on those on the front line. >> that fellow officer was a great friend of mine. you don't understand what we give to you when we come in here. >> in washington, three firefighters died last week trying to escape the flames. the governor called in the national guard and the president has decollared a disaster. 6:47. happening today, a judge will formally impose a life sentence on james holmes. holmes killed 12 people, injured dozens more when he opened fire inside a crowded theater in aurora, colorado in 2012. all of the vicks and their families will have a chance to address holmes in court over the next three days. for the first time since revealing details of his cancer

diagnosis, president jimmy carter taught sunday school in his hometown of plains, georgia. >> yesterday was the 689th time carter taught sunday school. he had been doing it for a long tame. he'd been teaching as soon as he was a teen, before becoming a peanut farmer and eventually the president. his message to the hundreds of attendees was clear, peace, faith and love. >> if you have a setback, accept it, analyze how much is our fault and set higher goals than you've ever had before. >> president carter says he plans to continue teaching sunday school for as long as he can. it was less than a week ago that he released news about his brain cancer and his newly found treatment. one of our periscope viewers said they saw president carter teach at sunday school and it was nothing short of inspirational. not this past sunday butç one his previous teachings. he's sure to inspire.

we'll be watching for showers late today. that's citizens bank park. got a game tonight, the phillies and the mets. looks like the showers will avoid the ballpark, just a slight chance of a shower, more likely you'll see partly sunny skies, 83 degrees at 7:05. just below the 80 degree mark at 10:00 tonight. those clouds will be breaking overnight. right now, the temperatures have come down nicely. to start with, 58 degrees in chester springs, horsham 59 and 59 in washington township. a cool start. with clear skies we see lots of sunshine to start with. a few, high clouds really won't hold the temperatures back. we're watching the radar screen. not much activity just yet. we'll likely see showers and thunderstorms develop. a light area of clouds in western pennsylvania. we've seen light showers this morning. that shower activity will move into some warmer, more humid air and so during the early afternoon, central pennsylvania will see some scattered showers.

by 6:00 this evening, we could see showers, possibly scattered thunderstorms for allentown, reading andç into lancaster county. as that line moves to the east, really falls apart by 11:00, looking dry. there's a chance we'll see a shower overnight. that's just a chance of a shower overnight. partly sunny skies, definitely warm. you might not need an umbrella. near 90 this afternoon. the showers are out of here tomorrow. the humidity starts coming down. 86 degrees. the skies will clear out for tuesday. then we are in the clear for the rest of the week. gorgeous weather, wednesday and thursday, very low humidity. humanity stays low on friday, 84 degrees and it will be warmer this weekend, 88 on saturday, cles to 309 on sunday. >> thanks, bill. let's take a look at route 42 if you take that on your way to work or maybe you stayed overnight at the beach, the shore and you're coming back. that's what i always do. >> if you have that luxury

wherever you're leaving from. >> yes. >> you may need to leave early on route 42 this morning. jessica boyington has that. >> we are starting to see big delays on the 42 freeway around runnemede at the new jersey turnpike. you can see we're having around 11-minute drive time, typically a 4 to 5-minute trip. approaching the walt whitman breath, the philadelphia area, if you have to get to 295. additionally on the other side, right around 76 on the eastbound side we have an accident scene there as well. as for the schuylkill expressway, you can see starting to see red and yellow throughout the area. both sides, east and westbound from the blue route to the vine street expressway. we're adding ten minutes to that trip this morning. that's typical volume. an accident scene is clearing out of the way around girard avenue. mass transit, shuttle bus

i'm nbc 10's katy zachry live in norristown where later today pennsylvania's attorney general kathleen kane will appear inside the montgomery county courthouse for a preliminary hearing. kane has been charged with leaking information to a grand jury -- with leaking grand jury information to the press, then lying about it to the grand jury. prosecutors say she was trying to embarrass two former staff her kane thought released information that was critical of her. despite calls for her resignation, she refused to step down, saying she did notl'g wrong. the preliminary hearing is scheduled to are this afternoon. nbc 10 will be here and in the courtroom covering it. reporting live, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. good morning, i'm matt delucia, live in westchester. students start the fall semester here at west chester university but do so on heels of a concern of a discovery of a potentially deadly bacteria. legionella were found in ten buildings here on campus the

treatment included turning off water an super chlorinating the system to get rid of it. an employee tested positive for the legionella bacteria which can cause a severe form of pneumonia known as legionnaires disease. this is one of the buildings affected, main hall. students are on campus ready to start classes. the county health department immediate cause for alarm. we're hoping to learn more about the status of the water treatment later on today. live in westchester, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. and jessica boyington with your first alert traffic. this morning we're starting to see those delays on 95. right around girard avenue on the southbound side, you can see that behind me. toward the center city area. now we're dealing with a 21-minute drive time from woodhaven road up towards the vine street expressway. the 42 freeway starting to see major delays headed northbound into philadelphia or to 295, we're doubling that trip almost, now a ten-minute trip from 55 up towards the bridge.
