morning. here is a live look at center city. temperatures will soar near 90 in some spots today. you know what often accompanies the hot weather. storms. meteorologist michelle grossman is tracking what's ahead where you live in our neighborhood forecast. good morning, michelle. >> hi, rosemary. tracking the potential for strong storms. some severe in spots later this afternoon mainly between 3:00 and 6:00. we're quiet right now looking at a mixture of sun and clouds across the area. cool start. 50s and 60 across the area. a look at north wildwood, new jersey. they'll be the last spot to see the storms. closer to the evening hours is when we'll see stronger storms at the beaches. severe storms mainly in the lehigh valley, berks county, pa suburbs and central jersey. mainly between 3:00 and 6:00.

damaging winds will be the biggest threat. potential for hail and also ground-to-cloud lightning. throughout the afternoon we'll see the temperatures popping close to 90 in some spots. we're cool to start out with. may need a light jacket. 60 in wilmington. have the windows open i guess this morning. 52 in mount holly and 54 in atlantic city. a little cooler than this time yesterday. we'll be much warmer later this afternoon. thises the system moves through this afternoon between 3:00 and 6:00 and out of here by 6:30. throughout the afternoon we'll see the winds pick up and the temperatures will pick up as well. 61 in the pa suburbs. 64 by 8:00. by 10:0075. we're going to see the clouds increasing in some spots. then, by 2:00, this is where you notice the changes. winds out of the southwest at 12 miles per hour. really starting to pick up, bringing in the moisture and the heat. those are the two ingredients you need to spark the storms.

by 2:00, 85. and by 4:00, 88. talking about a very windy sunday coming up. now back to the breaking news that we mentioned. a burlington county native is dead this morning. the former singer on "the voice" was shot at a concert in orlando, florida of the her name is christina grimmie. and she was from marlton, burlington county. let's get to monique braxton who is live with details. >> reporter: at this point this morning investigators are still searching for a motive. they do say christina grimmie was shot to death in an area that was packed with young people. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: fans were gathering to meet grimmie and other performers after what's been described as a family-friendly

concert. the nbc "voice" finalist was signing autographs when the gunman approached gathering two guns and opened fire. witnesses' cellphone video captured the chaos. moments after, the gunman committed suicide. orlando place say what was fun and exciting turned tragic. >> the suspect walked up and shot christina. at that point we know that her brother tackled the suspect. and that's when the suspect shot himself. >> it's extremely scary because i am in love with her, you know what i mean? like i literally am so obsessed with her. >> reporter: orlando police say they don't know if the gunman and the singer knew each other. no one else was hurt. the voice tweeted out this response. there are no words. we lost a beautiful soul with an amazing voice. our hearts go out to the friends, fans and family of the real grimmie. we'll stay on top of this investigation and have any development for you as it

happens. live now from the digital operations center, monique braxton, nbc10 nugs. news. new from overnight, philadelphia police are looking into the shooting of a man found dead inside this car in east germantown. it happened on herman street near bayton. investigators tell us the victim, who was in his 20s, was shot in the head just after 2:00 this morning. he is not charged with a crime, but eagles wide receiver nelson agholor is facing sexual assault allegations involving an exotic dancer. the woman accused agholor of assaulting her at cheerleader's gentleman's club in south philadelphia. the eagles acknowledge their 2015 top draft pick is the focus of a police investigation but have not commented further. eagles' defensive lineman connor barwin says he was with agholor at the club for a short time on thursday but doesn't know what happened after he left. here is what we know from police. >> we're just currently going through the investigative

process. very early in those stages. so it's going to be quite some time before we move into anything else. >> agholor, who was in town for offseason workouts, left for florida. his lawyer talked to nbc10. he tells us that agholor is not involved in any criminal conduct whatsoever. i should live for other days. pray the lord to guide my ways. last night friends gathered for a candle light vigil to remember the lives of two philadelphia children allegedly killed by their mother earlier this week. investigators say sophia hines and her two kids were visiting family in florida when she killed them. hines allegedly held a bed sheet over the mouths of her 7-month-old son st. leo and her 3-year-old daughter arielle. we spoke with arielle's preschool teacher at last night's vigil. >> we just saw her two weeks ago. i talked with their foster mom and she said that they were in good spirits, they were happy

and everything was good with them. this is the last thing i thought of. how sick of a person can you be to do something like that. >> sophia hines is charged with two counts of premeditated murder. we have some new video of that solar airplane leaving the lehigh valley to continue on its global journey. the solar impulse 2 took off from lehigh valley international airport right around 11:00 last night. it flew over new york city early this morning before landing at jfk international airport. that completed the plane's crossing of the united states. next it will across the atlantic ocean. today the copa america soccer tournament continues at lincoln financial field. here is a live look from our eagle's nest camera. all is quiet at the moment but the stands will be packed later on. the u.s. tackles paraguay tonight at 7:00.

>> former president bill clinton spoke about muhammad ali. so did comedian billy crystal. he honored his late friend by doing lis famohis famous impres the champion. muhammad ali died last week at the age of 74. the burial ceremony was private. the sports world is mourning hockey legend gordie howe who died yesterday at the age of 88. you can see him on the right in philadelphia when the flyers retired his son mark's number. gordie howe, mr. hockey, as he was known, was the game's leading scorer until wayne gretzky came along. former flyers joe watson remembers skating against the hall of famer. >> he was an icon to our sport like muhammad ali was to boxing. gordie howe was an icon to hockey. he will be sorely missed. >> the only professional athlete ever to play in five decades, gordie howe. in other news this morning, a jury has convicted alabama house speaker mike hubbard on 12 charges of violating the state ethics law.

the jury returned the verdict last night after deliberating for seven hours. prosecutors say hubbard used the power of his position to improperly benefit his companies and clients. they say he obtained more than $2 million in favors. sentencing is set for late july. three prominent political consultants are joining the effort to recall the judge who sentenced former stanford university swimmer brock turner to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. judge aaron persky was reelected this week after running unopposed. the consultants will help to gather signatures required to trigger a recall election. a ruling by a philadelphia judge could address what penn state football coach joe paterno knew and when in the jerry sandusky case. the judge ordered records be made public within a month. the documents include details of settlements penn state paid to dozens of people who say they were victims of jerry sandusky. the records could shed light on whether a boy told paterno in

the mid '70s that the assistant coach molested him. he is serving 30 to 60 years in prison for molesting ten boys. today drexel university hold a community wide commencement in more than a decade. with more than 3,000 graduates receiving their diplomas today, event will be held at citizens bank park. in the past drexel has held individual ceremonies because it doesn't have a venue big enough on campus to bring everybody together. today it's the 148th running of the belmont stakes. exaggerator comes into the race as the favorite. the horse beat kentucky derby winner niyquist at the preaknes but he is not a lock. >> i think sudden breaking news will have a big chance to beat him or either of the todd

shirt this morning. we have issued a first alert for this afternoon. lehigh valley, berks county. pa suburbs. central new jersey. the biggest potential for severe weather would be these spots. we are looking time-wise between 3:00 and 6:00. i'm track it for you a little bit later. the biggest threats with the storms. damaging winds, some hail and also some pretty severe lightning. temperatures across the area, 51 in allentown. 59 in coatesville. 60 in wilmington. 63 in dover. just 52 in trenton, mount holly. 55 in vineland. 54 in atlantic city. some spots into the 60s but most in the low to mid 50s. some in the upper 40s. system back to the west. it will move to the east through our area between 3:00 and 6:00. once we get the sun going and the heating gets going, we'll see the storms popping by the afternoon.

fire. witnesses tell police he had two guns. cellphone video captured the chaos downtown orlando. police are crediting grimmie's brother with preventing more injuries. he tackled the suspect. >> who would do that in their right mind. >> this is a very tragic event. this should have been something that was fun and exciting, and for something like this to happen is just a tragedy. >> reporter: now, police say they don't know if the gunman, who committed suicide, knew grimmie. object. the woman is doing okay. community spirit was the theme last night as people came together to help the family of a local police officer who died earlier this year. nbc10 was at the reception hall in wynnewood where friends and neighbors held a fund-raising dinner and raffle in honor of william albertes. officer albertes died after a stomach ailment sidelined him during a police-firefighter ice hockey came in april. he was 39 years old. a jury from outside the poconos could decide the fate of albert frein accused of killing a state trooper. the judge says he'll likely approve a deal to select jurors from out of the area. the defense wanted to move the trial itself arguing heavy media coverage would make things unfair. he managed to avoid capture for seven weeks in 2014, that's

according to police. investigators say he shot and killed corporal brian dixon and wounded officers douglas outside the barracks in 2014. >> we look for a jury without preconceived notions. >> it keeps the trial here in pike county so the citizens of pike county can see the trial in a public fashion if they desire. >> frein pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. in montgomery county, first responders hold a disaster drill for an oil train derailment. it's scheduled for the abrams rail yard along the schuylkill river in king of prussia. about 150 first responders with equipment will handle the simulated crash of a train carrying crude oil. if you plan to ride new jersey transit this weekend the transit agency is banning open

containers of alcohol on all trains and light rail cars through midnight on sunday. njt made the move because of special events this weekend in jersey and new york city. all beverages are banned from buses. we are get ag closer look at septa's new key card which will be rolled out next week to some riders. the septa key is a reloadable electronic fare card. the pilot program begins monday at 6:00 a.m. 10,000 riders can purchase the cards at 12 different stops. >> why we did this is to make travel convenient. and if people have waited in lines to buy their monthly or weekly pass. that's going away. >> i'm going to try do get down here monday and get one. >> a lot of people excited for this. septa will expand the program over the coming months. in the meantime, if you have a traditional weekly or monthly

we lost another legend. known as mr. hockey, gordie howe passed away at the age of 88. here he is in philly when his son mark was inducted into the flyers' hall of fame. the only pro athlete in the four major sports to play in five decades. he was hockey's leading scorer until wayne gretzky came along. former flyer stanley cup winner joe watson played against gordie howe. >> he was really an icon to our sport, just like muhammad ali was to boxing. gordie howe was an icon to hockey, and he will be sorely missed. >> there really isn't a mr. football or a mr. baseball. there is a mr. hockey. i'm john clark. enjoy your weekend. i did everything i could to make her party perfect.
