we are definitely colder. 12 degrees cooler. 7 degrees in philadelphia, trenton as well. atlantic city 12 degrees cooler. you're going to notice the difference. winds have dipped a little bit so you're not going to deal with an extreme windchill to start. some of us feeling like low 30s to kick off the morning. actual temperatures right now mostly in the mid 30s. definitely a difference from the 40s that we saw yesterday. radar and satellite a tight view, still some clouds and we will see that little cloud/sun mix because we have a little more cloud coverage to the north starting to drop to the south. but overall especially through your afternoon this is going to be a mostly sunny and pretty nice day for us. philadelphia 39 at 8:00 a.m., 47 by 11:00 a.m. winds starting to pick back up to 15 miles per hour by 11:00 a.m. those winds will continue to pick up into the afternoon, temperatures back around the

50s, we'll track the rest of your sunday, and the details on your work week in just a bit. we have new information now on a crash that has part of the new jersey turnpike shut down. state police confirm that five cars are involved in the crash. they tell us no one is seriously hurt. that's the good news here. but, the turnpike still shut down southbound north of exit 7 in bordentown township. new jersey state police tell us it will open again shortly. we're going to continue to update you throughout the morning. today is one of the busiest travel days throughout the year with plenty of people returning from their thanksgiving holiday. 30th street station will be packed with travelers coming home by train. amtrak is adding extra trains to the northeast corridor, the acela express and the northeast regional lines to make sure everybody gets where they need to go. amtrak will also run holiday express trains between new york and washington, d.c. there will also be plenty of drivers on the roads today. here is a live look over the schuylkill expressway. penndot expects the volume to

pick up as the day goes on. you will want to give yourself plenty of extra time. and as we think about that accident over on the new jersey turnpike, be safe today. stay safe out there on the roads. philadelphia international airport will see thousands of travelers as well. nbc 10's monique braxton is live this morning to tell us how the crowds are making out. monique? >> well, the crowd getting larger, rosemary. take a look just over my shoulder. phl folks estimate about 85,000 people will pass through the terminals here today alone. as we arrived just a few dozen passengers were preparing to go through security checkpoints. as you can see that crowd has grown tremendously. but the lines appear to be moving smoothly. also we've been keeping an eye on the departure and arrival boards. so far so good no delays. we met one college student heading back to louisiana for school. >> it was good.

fidel castro. you're looking at an aerial view of little havana around midnight. the former cuban leader died early yesterday. he was 90 years old. reaction in the u.s. to castro's passing appears to be bittersweet. thousands of people are cheering but many wish their loved once who escaped castro's half century regime had lived to see his death. one cuban-american said she's hoping for change once castro's brother raul, the current cuban president who is now 85, is no longer in power. >> hopefully we will have a future democracy in cuba and i'll be able to go back and visit the land of my birth. >> president obama, who moved to normalize relations with cuba, says history will report and judge the enormous impact of fidel castro. president-elect donald trump says fidel castro's legacy is one of firing squads, poverty, and the denial of fundamental human rights. it was back in 1961 when president eisenhower closed the u.s. embassy in havana because

of castro's close ties to the soviet union. months later, president kennedy approved what would turn out to be a failed u.s.-backed invasion of cuba which brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. fast forward to last year when president obama reopened the u.s. embassy in havana. commercial flights from the u.s. to cuba resumed this summer for the first time in half a century. cuba's tourism business is taking off even though tourism there is still technically off limits to americans. the cuban government declared nine days of mourning which canceled events and closed businesses. cuban americans in our area are also hoping fidel castro's death brings about some real change. hamilton township councilwoman elena shurmer was born in cuba. she says explaining castro's death to her own children has been a surreal experience. >> i said i'm happy. i'm happy. and i don't want to feel happy about somebody being dead.

but i actually feel happy that he's gone. my parents couldn't freely go back and forth to cuba if my grandmother was dying, my father couldn't go see her. you know, they separated a family. >> another cuban-american lawmaker from new jersey, u.s. senator bob menendez says fidel castro's death opens the way for possible democracy in cuba. menendez opposed president obama's move to restore diplomatic relations to cuba over the past few years. democratic senator laid out conditions for that kind of arrangement. >> release all political prisoners. hold free elections. let the commission for human rights enter the country. and then, and then you can have a relationship with the united states. >> menendez also wants cuba to return fugitive joann chessemar convicted in the shooting death of a new jersey state trooper in the 1970s.

and new jersey and mid 30s for lehigh valley as well as delaware. these temperatures still going to climb to upper 40s to low 50s. pretty similar to yesterday in the afternoon. also the winds are going to start to pick up again. very similar to what we saw on our saturday. the difference will be a little more clear conditions than what we saw yesterday. we're already starting to note that on the board. a more sunny forecast. through philadelphia today, 42 at 9:00 a.m., 41 by 9:00 p.m. forecasting right in the low 50s. in the suburbs we will cap in the upper 40s. 47 the temperature by 1:00. right around there for the lehigh valley. parts of new jersey, delaware, pretty similar to low 40s by 9:00 a.m. by 1:00 in the afternoon, upper 40s to close to 50 degrees. those clear conditions as we move into the overnight. a good forecast today. pretty good for your monday, as well. we'll talk more about monday the forecast for the eagles game and when rain chances start to return coming up.

degrees. lower 30s over much of the map here. audubon at 33 degrees. we trek further to the north about the same, mostly in the 30s. 20s as well, pep derton at 28 degrees. switching over to lehigh valley neighborhoods a little better off. areas north of philly mostly in the 30s. we do see some 20s south of philadelphia. 37 the temperature in allentown. the same for mertztown to start off your morning. remember, because winds are light but still picking up out there some areas do feel a bit cooler than they true. this is nothing compared to last sunday when we had the high wind gusts moving through. radar and satellite showing up. some clouds mostly to the north. very, very isolated spots of snow trying to fall in that northern edge of our viewing zone. we're not going to see much if anything in that area today. overall dry forecast for us, in our sunday. now as we move along that will change during your work week.

not today, though. today we stay on the dry side mostly sunny, spotty clouds out there. 51 degrees in philadelphia. the same for the shore and delaware and upper 40s for high temperatures everywhere else. we're going to make it pretty easily and fairly similar temperaturewise to just yesterday on your saturday. rain chances, though, really are going to boost in a few days. today we stay dry. monday for the most part we stay dry. but monday overnight we're talking midnight on into tuesday. technically tuesday. we start to see that chance go up. then notice tuesday, wednesday, even through your thursday, philadelphia, dover, atlantic city, and reading, all looking at those rain chances. especially on your tuesday and wednesday. and warmer air moving in with this we may be able to pull in some thunderstorm development as well. looking at the forecast, good news is for the monday game tomorrow, at the linc, packers and eagles, a good game forecast. if you're tailgating in the afternoon it's going to start to seem a little more cloudy

nbc 10 news starts now. good morning welcome back to "nbc 10 news today." it's 6:30 on this sunday. eagles forecast, travel forecast today. a lot going on in terms of the weather. let's check in with meteorologist krystal klei in the first alert neighborhood forecast. >> mother nature must be on our side. we're tracking some big changes but they follow the travel and eagles forecast into the next few days. today mostly sunny. still a bit windy. similar to yesterday. into monday we're actually looking very seasonal. temperatures should be about where they are typically this time of year. and still some sun with increasing clouds. it's by your tuesday through your midweek that we track very rainy forecast. in fact we could see over an inch of rain pretty easily in some areas as a result of several systems passing. but that's still a few days out for today this morning here's what it feels like outside. definitely feels colder than yesterday morning.

i can vouch for that. 31 in reading. now at 29 for that feels-like in lancaster and. in philadelphia. 30 in cape may and dover at 31. mount pocono into the mid 20s. these aren't your actual temperatures but it will feel like on your skin because of the fact we've got some light winds moving through as well. those will pick up later today. won't be seeing any rain or snow. on the dry side for the forecast at least for a couple more days before we start to track those changes. you can take the sneak peek out with the seven-day forecast. more details coming up on that potential for rain. we're going to track out the showers throughout your work week. and when we could see the potential for thunderstorms all of that coming up in just a bit. >>le. >> the holiday weekend is just about over and now millions are hitting the roads, taking to the skies, and grabbing a train in order to make it home after thanksgiving. today is considered the busiest travel day of the year at philadelphia international airport. and that's where nbc 10's

make sure you know where your going before you go through tsa screening. it's a 15 minute between "f" and "c" terminals so be prepared. there's also free shuttle service. and airport executives ask that you not wait on the side of the road talking to your loved one on the phone. there are free cell phone lots. we're going to be talking to passengers throughout the morning and have some of their comments for you. live now at phl monique braxton nbc 10 news. >> thanks for that monique. new information on a crash that has part of the new jersey turnpike shut down. traffic is now getting by on the shoulder in the southbound lanes near bordentown township. state police confirm that five cars were involved in this crash. they tell us that nobody was seriously hurt. that's the good news. some more information on exactly where this is happening again it's new jersey turnpike southbound lanes just north of exit 7 in bordentown township. state police tell us that they hope to reopen all of the lanes shortly. we'll keep you updated throughout the morning.

cuba, is no longer in power. president obama, who has moved to normalize relations with cuba, says that fidel castro history will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him. president-elect donald trump says fidel castro's legacy is one of firing squads, poverty, and the denial of fundamental human rights. cuban-americans in our region remain hopeful that castro's death will mean a shift in policy and politics on the small island nation. reporter christian casarez from our spanish speaking sister station telemundo 62 spoke with a leader who says castro changed her family forever. >> what castro has done to my family is separated my family. >> reporter: ileana schirmer says the reason she is in the united states is because of fidel castro. after her parents fled a communist cuba. >> my parents couldn't freely go back and forth to cuba.

if my grandmother was dying my father couldn't go see her. you know, they separated a family. and brought a lot of pain. >> reporter: pain she says was her fuel when she came to this new country from her hometown of colon. now making history along the way as the first hispanic woman to serve in public office in mercer county. but her smile isn't the only one. >> it was something almost surreal. i've waited my whole entire life for this man to pass. >> reporter: inside this cuban restaurant a feeling of hope and a new beginning reflected on their smiles as the business is serving one free drink in light of what's to come. >> it's kind of a little anti-climactic because he is out of power essentially for ten years, but you know something that cuban exile community has been waiting for for close to 60 years. >> reporter: a change this local leader says was surreal as she explained what was happening to her children. >> i said i'm happy. i'm happy.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> windy again. that's what we're looking at for your sunday forecast. is isn't terribly windy, not like what we saw last sunday. but winds will be picking up moving into the afternoon. gorgeous sunrise. clear conditions and those winds are already picking up just a bit out there. really they're not terribly strong currently. we're looking at winds around 5 to 15 miles per hour. coatesville the highest at 15 even. but areas like lewis pretty light. we're going to deal with winds strengthening in the afternoon to gusts of about 25 to 30 miles per hour. sustained winds around the 10 to 15-mile-per-hour range across the board.

a few areas 10 to 15 miles per hour. it's not going to be a day ruiner but you're going to notice it outside, the winds will be picking up. as for the temperature trend. friday at 53 degrees yesterday we only made it to 50. 52 is average. sa for us today. as we go into your next work week temperatures start to rise. but as they rise moisture is going to push right back in, as well. coming up we're going to track the chances for rain. how long they last. and details about how much rain we might be able to see as well. >> pretty decent day to head out to center city. grand opening ceremony for this year's christmas village. it's in philadelphia's dill worth park. the festivities began on thanksgiving day. this year the opener is split between the courtyard and building's northern apron. the village is open now every day through christmas eve. just about quarter till

a scam. that's what president-elect donald trump is calling an election recount effort now backed by hillary clinton's campaign. yesterday clinton's camp said that it plans to support a recount in wisconsin. former green party presidential nominee jill stein is organizing the effort. the recount in wisconsin could start this week. stein also wants recounts in pennsylvania, and michigan. political observers say those three battleground states helped to decide the election. president-elect trump won 290 electoral votes compared to clinton's 232. it's the electoral vote that wins the white house. clinton leads the national popular vote by about 2 million votes.

in a statement the president-elect also called the recount effort ridiculous. mr. trump said, quote, the people have spoken and the election is over. this is a scam by the green party for an election that has already been conceded. a little bit later on this morning, "meet the press." moderator chuck todd will be sitting down with trump campaign manager kellyanne conway to talk about whether the president-elect can keep his promises. he'll also discuss the death of fidel castro and what it means for diplomatic relations with the u.s. that's at 10:30 right here on nbc 10. tomorrow's cyber monday is expected to be the busiest online shopping day of all time, generating more than $3 billion in sales. if you're planning to cash in experts say make a list before you shop online. if you weren't already planning to buy an item in the first place then a sale may not be saving you any money. know where to look. cyber monday usually has great deals on apparel, and shop safe.
