two weeks to come up with a plan to present to the federal agency. >> sarah, thank you. right now, as cold weather moves in, our state fire marshal says fatal fires in ohio are on the rise and first responders need to be ready for everything. meg shaw is live at lakewood fire department this morning and they've got a special training session today. >> reporter: this training will be the first of its kind in lakewood. the firefighters will work with complex situationses using state of the art equipment to provide care to human actors and mannequins. the patients will show signs and symptoms of a stroke and other life threatening situations. they will then provide the care, they will respond to the given situations in real-time, just like they would during an emergency. the department says already this year they transported

and they say today's training will help save more lives and reduce complications for those victims. that stroke unit i just mentioned from the cleveland clinic, that actually will hit the streets full-time here in lakewood in a couple weeks. the unit will now be able to meet the firefighters and first responders out on the scene at a patient's home and start providing care immediately as well as on the way to the hospital. they say that will reduce a lot of complications for those victims. today's training starts 10:00 and will run until about noon. live in lakewood, meg shaw, news 5. >> meg, thank you. 5:05 is the time right now. someone is targeting businesses and drivers in westlake with a slingshot. glass doors, windows all damaged at five businesses along center ridge road. marbles have been found near these places and police say they've gotten three reports of marbles being shot at vehicles near superior road and detroit

the mother said addiction is a lifetime disease and she hopes people that are suffering won't be afraid to get the help they need. the u.s. surgeon general is calling drug and alcohol addiction a major public health crisis. a video posted shows the addiction will be identified as a chronic disease of the brain. many local officials hope this will help drug addicts get more help and treatment. a new poll shows five ohioans know a heroin or opioid user. one in four knows one who has misused a pain drug.. in akron, blasting work is under way underground for its ohio canal intercepter tunnel. the tunnel will be able to store 25 million gallons of raw

dakota access pipeline so they can talk more with native american tribes who feel the project will damage the drinking water supply for communities at risk if there are any oil leaks. now backers say the pipeline is the safest way to transport oil and can make the u.s. less dependent on other countries. groups in cities across the country organized rallies to protest the pipeline. this group set down an a man parked the van in the middle of the street, then locked himself to the axle. it took an hour and-a-half to free him. this was a scene last night in akron. a few dozen protesters took to the streets during the evening rush, holding signs for people driving by. president-elect donald trump has tough decisions to make about his businesses, especially the hotel he just opened down the street from the white house.

stroke victims to the hospital or the e.r. we know in those tense situations every minute counts. the training will provide firefighters with more opportunity to treat these victims quicker. during today's training, firefighters will work through several complex scenarios in real-time just like they would in the heat of the home. they're using a simulation lab and a mobile stroke treatment unit to provide the care. in some cases they will work full size digitally programmed mannequins. the unit will hit the streets in lakewood in a couple of weeks. the unit will be able to meet first responders and firefighters in the field at a patient's home and they can begin treatment on the drive to the hospital. they say that means that a lot of these stroke victims will have reduced complications on the way to the hospital and even when they get to the

state-wide we're looking at a big savings. >> as we need to fill up during the winter with historical salt usage data that we have, we could estimate that we could save about $10 million. that savings will be kind of absorbed back into the operations budget and used for other items in our operations. >> $10 million might seem like a lot but odot's operating budget is $3.2 billion. this winter, to pre-treat the highways and salt afterwards. at times they will use a liquid solution called aqua-saline. it's added to salt when pavement temperatures dip below 20 degrees. also, only on 5, a battle brewing in one quiet neighborhood this morning. plans to build a homeless housing complex in akron have neighbors fearing for their safety. it would be built on a dirt
