organizers said this was a call for unity and a protest against hate speech. >> we're not going to stand around and let anyone, no matter who we are, no matter what sexual preference or race or religion, no one has the right to walk on that. >> protesters disbursed just before 12:30. there was a group of counter- protesters, about 20 to 30 of those, but all remained peaceful through the night. new developments in cleveland this square is now permanent. >> we have a lot of work that still needs to be done to make it happen. >> reporter: it needs to be approved by a federal agency. the $80 million newly redeveloped public square opened back up over the summer. this stretch of superiors was initially planned for busses. on the ground you can see it see it says "bus only." the mayor says the change will

for the next two weeks, the city and rta will work together to put together a plan to show the federal agency it needs to be approved before construction can begin. they said they'll make changes to other areas, focusing on west third to east 18th on superior. the routes may be changed to look more like euclid avenue with traffic lanes for busses only and traffic lights synced to keep them moving quickly. not all happy about the changes. >> as a rider, we should be able to commute back and forth because sometimes we may need to get over there but we have to get off early. >> it will be congestion and it's not a good idea to close that down. >> reporter: at least one cleveland councilman also not pleased with this announcement, posting on twitter, saying that it is an unfortunate decision. again, the city and the rta

two weeks to come up with a plan to present to the federal agency. >> sarah, thank you. right now, as cold weather moves in, our state fire marshal says fatal fires in ohio are on the rise and first responders need to be ready for everything. meg shaw is live at lakewood fire department this morning and they've got a special training session today. >> reporter: this training will be the first of its kind in lakewood. the firefighters will work with complex situationses using state of the art equipment to provide care to human actors and mannequins. the patients will show signs and symptoms of a stroke and other life threatening situations. they will then provide the care, they will respond to the given situations in real-time, just like they would during an emergency. the department says already this year they transported

and they say today's training will help save more lives and reduce complications for those victims. that stroke unit i just mentioned from the cleveland clinic, that actually will hit the streets full-time here in lakewood in a couple weeks. the unit will now be able to meet the firefighters and first responders out on the scene at a patient's home and start providing care immediately as well as on the way to the hospital. they say that will reduce a lot of complications for those victims. today's training starts 10:00 and will run until about noon. live in lakewood, meg shaw, news 5. >> meg, thank you. 5:05 is the time right now. someone is targeting businesses and drivers in westlake with a slingshot. glass doors, windows all damaged at five businesses along center ridge road. marbles have been found near these places and police say they've gotten three reports of marbles being shot at vehicles near superior road and detroit

the mother said addiction is a lifetime disease and she hopes people that are suffering won't be afraid to get the help they need. the u.s. surgeon general is calling drug and alcohol addiction a major public health crisis. a video posted shows the addiction will be identified as a chronic disease of the brain. many local officials hope this will help drug addicts get more help and treatment. a new poll shows five ohioans know a heroin or opioid user. one in four knows one who has misused a pain drug.. in akron, blasting work is under way underground for its ohio canal intercepter tunnel. the tunnel will be able to store 25 million gallons of raw

it will cost $184 million, not to mention it will take three years to complete. blasting will take place one or twice per day over the next four months. people within a half mile may hear a sound similar to fireworks and also feel some vibrations. akron is moving on to the next phase to redevelop the downtown area. they reviewed current conditions and came up with planning options for the current sites. they next step is getting residents inlv high properties for what needs to be done. they hope to start the process early in 2017. let's check in with j.d. rudd. >> forecast for today, we'll see a few spotty sprinkles in the morning, temperatures cooler than yesterday, about 50 to 55 and a little bit of a breeze to be had out there by the afternoon hours. a lot to talk about when it comes to the weekend. many words are creeping into the forecast. some of those include warm, rain, windy, sunny, guys, which

5:12 now. developing news desk, as the supreme court judge in england says brexit could be delayed several years. the judge spoke about an hour ago, said the exit might be delayed by more than two years. the supreme court will hear the appeal later this year and the judge claims the european union votes was not binding. now some developing stories we're following this morning.

dakota access pipeline so they can talk more with native american tribes who feel the project will damage the drinking water supply for communities at risk if there are any oil leaks. now backers say the pipeline is the safest way to transport oil and can make the u.s. less dependent on other countries. groups in cities across the country organized rallies to protest the pipeline. this group set down an a man parked the van in the middle of the street, then locked himself to the axle. it took an hour and-a-half to free him. this was a scene last night in akron. a few dozen protesters took to the streets during the evening rush, holding signs for people driving by. president-elect donald trump has tough decisions to make about his businesses, especially the hotel he just opened down the street from the white house.

ethical questions if trump holds press conferences on the property there or if visiting diplomates want to stay at the hotel. trump said he will transfer his business empire to his children during his presidency. experts say the best solution may be to just sell it. and trump's daughter, ivanka, facing scrutiny for her business as well. several fashion journalists say her interview on "60 minutes," they got an e-mail promoting the diamond bracelet she wore, saying it was for sale on her website. barbara boxer is working to get rid of the electoral college. she introduced a bill calling it an outdated and democratic system. it would be extremely difficult for a bill like this to pass since it's a proposed constitutional amendment. it needs a two-thirds vote by

for the walk. they easily had four times that. it would be best to keep superior avenue closed. >> the ban on busses at public square was supposed to be temporary. now, it's permanent. >> sarah finney is live on the square with what happens next. good morning, sarah. >> reporter: good morning. these barricades are not going anywhere. over the next couple of weeks the city and the rta need to come up with a plan to present to a federal the 600-foot stretch of superior needs to remain closed. that needs to be agreed upon before work can begin. the newly renovated public square reopened before the republican national convention this summer. the original plan was to are have rta bus service on superior but that was pushed back indefinitely in august. the mayor said he listened to public input, many saying they didn't want busses to go through the square. he acknowledges this will cost money to change but he thinks

stroke victims to the hospital or the e.r. we know in those tense situations every minute counts. the training will provide firefighters with more opportunity to treat these victims quicker. during today's training, firefighters will work through several complex scenarios in real-time just like they would in the heat of the home. they're using a simulation lab and a mobile stroke treatment unit to provide the care. in some cases they will work full size digitally programmed mannequins. the unit will hit the streets in lakewood in a couple of weeks. the unit will be able to meet first responders and firefighters in the field at a patient's home and they can begin treatment on the drive to the hospital. they say that means that a lot of these stroke victims will have reduced complications on the way to the hospital and even when they get to the

autistic boy in southern ohio is heart-breaking and shows how bad the drug problem has become in our state. t.j. coddle hadn't been seen for months. he wasn't officially reported missing until two weeks ago. his mother led him to the boy's remains behind house. she is now charged with murder, along with her boyfriend. >> we live in a society where children are considered disposable. >> police say the boyfriend abused t.j. and he was malnourished. detectives are looking into whether the mother paid for her drug habit instead of feeding her son. eight members of a family

weather alert weekend taking shape as the rain changes over to snow, saturday night, through sunday, into early monday morning. this will lead to slick roadways and slowdowns. it's all thanks to this big storm system working its way in, bringing us rain for saturday, changing more over to he snow late in the day saturday, into sunday and hanging around for monday morning as well. a big cold shot follow the storm system. the timing on this is saturday night into monday morning. we could see from one to four inches of snow in general around the area. the snow may stack up. temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s, the confidence is good we'll see higher amounts of snow in the northeast part of the coverage area. we'll keep you updated as the

welcome back. it is 5:54. soon enough, flakes will be in the forecast. odot is getting ready for the winter season. >> we have budget is not looking bad this year. >> that's a positive thing. >> finding the silver lining. >> right. the theme this year is recycle the salt. we had such a mild winter last year, odot didn't have to stock up on salt like it normally does in summer. all of that leftover of salt will be used on the highways and state roads this year. as far as the upcoming winter, salt prices have dropped significantly, going from $65 a ton to $43 a ton and you do the

state-wide we're looking at a big savings. >> as we need to fill up during the winter with historical salt usage data that we have, we could estimate that we could save about $10 million. that savings will be kind of absorbed back into the operations budget and used for other items in our operations. >> $10 million might seem like a lot but odot's operating budget is $3.2 billion. this winter, to pre-treat the highways and salt afterwards. at times they will use a liquid solution called aqua-saline. it's added to salt when pavement temperatures dip below 20 degrees. also, only on 5, a battle brewing in one quiet neighborhood this morning. plans to build a homeless housing complex in akron have neighbors fearing for their safety. it would be built on a dirt
