good morning. welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm candace mccowan in for gene ramirez. >> and i'm gayle guyardo. while you were sleep, a deputy shot a man in a north tampa apartment complex. and now they're investigating at the windswood oaks complex. >> our josh thomas is there digging for more information. and he is now live. what can you tell us about what led up to the shooting? >> reporter: well, right now, hillsborough county deputies are continuing to investigate this incident that happened off of florida avenue. this all start when had the

about a man shouting and waiving a gun around at the windswood oaks apartments. when they arrived, they did see the man that has been identified as a 27-year-old. they tried talking to him through the pa system on the cruisers as they tried to deescalate the situation. >> he had dialogue with him that was very aggressive and confrontational. they kept asking him to drop the gun. he refused to and pointed it directly at them and advanced in their direction at this which time they were in fear of their lives and fired to stake him into custody. >> reporter: -- to take him into custody. >> reporter: and we are told that he did live in this apartment complex. she was shot several times but the deputies. he has been taken to the hospital but we do not know his condition at this time. and we should note that no deputies were injured during this situation. candace -- >> all right, josh, thank you very much. and now a follow-up to breaking news that we brought you at 11:00.

all good 75 up there at the apex. good morning to you in pasco county. moving toward tampa and your bridges, connecting pinellas and hillsborough, no problems here on the courtney campbell, howard franklin or gandy. and good morning pinellas county, u.s. 19, the arch nemesis, well, i'm happy to report, it looks fine, we are accident-free throughout the bay area. gayle, candace, back the to you. >> thank you. an 8 on your side alert this morning about a troubling incident in polk county. parents, you're going to want to talk to your kids about this one. law enforcement is looking for a middle-aged man driving a car that approached a young girl as she walked home from school. news channel 8's lindsey mastis is following this story for us center. lindsey, what exactly happened? >> reporter: well, gayle, this is very scary, especially for parents and kids. the polk county sheriff tells us an 11-year-old girl got off the bus and started walking home when a car pulled up and

her to get in the car with him. he told her, your mom is in the hospital and she sent us to get you. luckily, the girl ran away. this happened around 4:00 in the afternoon. the girl got off the bus at thousand oaks boulevard and the car approached her as she walked along the ronald reagan parkway. the car is a 2000 model white four-door, tinted windows, black rims and a black back bumper. the man is in his late 40s to 50s, short hair, salt and pepper goatee, sun burned or has a red complexion. he was wearing a dark green shirt with orange lettering on the front of it. when the girl started running away, the car made a u-turn and left. the girl ran home and told her mother who contacted law enforcement. this is a good time to have the discussion about what to do if something like this happens to them. >> you're right. because as a parent you preach and preach and you wonder, will they do the right thing if

[ applause ] >> i love florida. a special place. and i think we will do really well. i think we will do really well in ohio. now that i have paul's endorsement, i know i'm going to win ohio. >> trump has 447 delegates of the 1237 needed to win the nomination. on the democratic side, a huge night for senator bernie sanders. he wins the primary in michigan. a big upset for front runner hillary rodham clinton. this morning, senator sanders insist that the biggest wins are yet to come. >> the political revolution that we are talking about is strong in every part of the

that our strongest areas are yet to the happen. we're going to do very, very well on the the west coast and other parts of this country. >> well, senator sanders has 567 delegates of the 2383 needed for that party nomination. hillary rodham clinton took mississippi. this win gives clinton a total of 1,234 delegates. that's more than double the sanders has. and donald trump also won in had mississippi. while you were sleeping, results came in from the gop caucuses in hawaii. the winner there is also donald trump. senator ted cruz won the state of idaho which gives him a total of 346 delegates. senator sanders and hillary rodham clinton will once again debate tonight right here in the sunshine state. the debate which is their second show down in four days aims to get the very important latino vote here in floridaful it will be moderated by reporters from univision and the washington post. and news channel 8 will be

she now faces several charges including reckless driving and dwi. it's not clear why she was maked -- was naked in her car. fire investigators will be back at a restaurant this morning to the try to determine what started a fire there. was closed. scene. nearby businesses were evacuated because of smoke. no one was hurt. a woman is accused of driving drunk and going right into the back of a police car. st. petersburg police tell us that the cruiser was parked on central avenue with the lights it. she is charged with dui. hurt. the senate judiciary committee will hold a hearing this morning on the oversight justice. the head of the justice witness. the committee maintains oversight over the department of justice. a u.s. senator wants the

with temperatures warmer than normal in washington, d.c. this year, the national park service is predicting cherry blossoms to bloom earlier than normal. march temperatures often determine the blooming buds. they are expected to pop open between march 18th and the 28th. about five days ahead of schedule. what a beautiful sight. temperatures in the 70s and 80s this week could be the warmest on record for dc. >> some people love them and some people just want the barking to come to an end. yeah, residents in oregon really don't know how to feel about their new sea lion problem. the adorable creatures are taking over the dock near the river. and more are coming. they're looking for fish. worries about damage to the dock has the city working on fencing to keep the sea lions at bay. and while they might be cute, city officials warn they could be aggressive. stay away. >> and they don't smell so good. just saying.
