good morning and welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm candace mccowan in for gene. >> i'm gayle guyardo. three people are dead after a car crashes in sarasota. right now a fourth victim is in the hospital. these are live pictures from the scene at the intersection of old bradenton road and desoto road. actually, this is a still picture that you're looking at right now. so far police do not know what caused the six l car crash but they do believe speed was a factor. we have a crew on the way to the scene right now. we'll have lots of updates on this breaking story throughout

lacey has been on top of this. what can you tell isn't it true >> very sad. a triple fatal accident. just one vehicle involved. as you said, gayle, they believe that speed was a factor. they have another person that's been transported to the hospital but three are deceased. traffic wise, university parkway is completely blocked both directions at the southeast lower corner of the airport. university closed old bradenton to desoto road. the good news is desoto road remains open so you can use it as an alternate. it intersects university right here at this location but it's an excellent alternate and then you can hop up here and continue on university if you're heading over to i-75. very sad news in the suncoast area this morning. in east lake we have a collision.

road at keystone road so be on the lock out for that. we've had some big issues so far in traffic this morning. how is the weather looking leigh? >> extremely different. it's back to winter. stroing -- strong winds from the north bringing in chilly air. inverness in the 40s and you can see temperatures dropping for the next 3 and a half hours. tampa at 57, lakeland 52. it's cool in north port at 61. you factor in the strong winds and it feels even colder. wind speeds at 15 to 20 miles per hour. these little blue numbers that you see are wind gusts. up to 25 to 30. we're going to keep it feel ing like a winter day all day with a high of only 66 and that breeze. so in weather and traffic on the 8s at 5:38 an 8-day temperature trend to let you know when it warms back up. >> thank you, leigh.

wrongway wrong driver. the driver is out on bond almost after hit ago tampa police officer head on on i-275. this comes days after a hillsborough county sheriff's deputy was laid to rest. deputy john kotfila was killed by a wrongway driver on the selmon expressway. president obama is waking up this morning in cuba. today the commander in chief has a busy day ahead of him. he will meet with cuban president raul castro. how tampa is playing an important role in this historic visit. the search continues this morning for the driver in a deadly hit and run accident over the weekend in tampa. that driver did not stop when he hit a bicyclist in south tampa. police closed inner bay boulevard at 6th street south for several hours. >> once we arrived on scene we found that subject was deceased and appeared to be a victim of a hit and run crash. >> police are interviewing witnesses and checking for

anyone with information is asked to call tampa police. in your vote, more threats against republican presidential candidate donald trump and his family. a threatening letter was sent to trump's sister, who is a judge in philadelphia. as we continue to see violence at his rallies, saturday a protester was kicked out after a rally in arizona. >> there's a disgusting guy that puts a ku klux klan hat on. >> moments later a man in the punching and kicking him. >> senator ted cruz also campaigned in arizona this weekend. he asked trump supporters to reconsider saying hillary clinton that win if trump is the nominee. john kasich dismissed calls to drop ut to swing votes cruz's way. on the democratic side senator bernie sanders is looking ahead to saturday's primary in washington state. during the weekend he spoke to an enthusiastic proud in vancouver near the oregon

tampa bay rays take on the cuban national team. the two country haves a shared love for baseball. president obama is expected to attend the rays game there. first he's got a busy day. he already spent time with his family touring old havana, some people stood in the rain just to catch a glimpse. >> it's been 50 years without relation with the north american government and it looks like within the past year more things will change than within the last 50 years. >> reporter: today president obama attend a state dinner. during his trip he's also cuban entrepreneurs and he'll news channel 8's keith cate is in visit. more coverage beginning on first at 4:00. >> definitely a lot of people watching. thank you. the top suspect in the november terror attacks in paris claims he planned new attacks.

investigators in brussels where he was arrested friday. belgium's foreign minister said this morning that the terror suspect said he was ready to restart something. authorities are taking the claim very seriously. they said they found a lot of weapons and a new network of people around him. the fly dubai plane that crashed in russia saturday had enough fuel to keep flying as said by the ceo. bad weather caused the plane to circle the airport for 2 hours before attempting to land in strong winds. it nose dived and exploded, killing all 62 people on board. today scientists in south florida may have found the biggest python ever recorded in that region. snakes have an invasive species and there could be negative implications from it. they're gathering data from them to catch others. a vote that could ease the

looking for a space at one of sarasota's most popular tourist destinations. they will discuss and vote on a $15 million project to fix the parking nightmare at saint armon circle. business owners and the city want to put up parking meters and build a parking garage. the meet starting at 6:00 p.m. and the public input is welcome. that's growing. a ribbon cutting ceremony tuesday for a new loft style apartment building in the seminole heights neighborhood. mayor bob buckhorn will help cut the ribbon for the warehouse lofts. it's a 54 unit building. one of the most pop ular events wrapped up at the macdill air force base, the tampa air fest. nearly 30 planes were parked for tours and 15 showed off for spectators. one of the

doesn't last long. we're back above average into the middle of the week. leslee has a check on traffic on the 8s. we know there's a big sad issue this morning. >> yeah. a triple fatal accident, single car crash. apparently speed was involved. at least three people are dead at that point and one transported to the hospital. this is in the sarasota area, suncoast area. let's take a look at the maps here as i back up. we continue to follow this breaking traffic. here's what you need to know before you head out the door, this is right at the southeast corner of the sarasota international airport. university parkway is completely blocked both directions between old bradenton and desoto road. how to you get around it? take desoto. desoto is open. let's go to maleek on the street down there right now. you can see that that vehicle is sort of crunched up beside that tree. this investigation is going to take some time. you can expect university to be closed again between old bradenton and desoto for hours.

we're following breaking news right now. three people are dead after their car crashes in sarasota. only one person survived. right now investigators are on the scene at the intersection of old bradenton road and desoto road. that is where we find news

live on the scene. ryan, what can you tell us? >> reporter: candace, good morning. we just got to the scene within the last 5 minutes and obviously in roads in this general area are closed right now because of this investigation. i'll step out of the way and show you some of the scene. we cannot show you the vehicle involved at this point because we're told they are taking bodies away from the scene. at this point sarasota pd tells us that three people are dead, one taken to the hospital. no word on that person's condition. the car involved is split in half. it looks like an older model car, possibly a caprice but that's not confirmed. the vehicle was travelling westbound on university parkway when this happened. right now university and old bradenton road, the intersection right here is closed. we are waiting for more information on the victims and how this happened. we're being told at this point by a police spokeswoman that speed likely a factor in this crash. again, to quickly recap, three people dead, one taken to the hospital. this is a very fluid scene at this point.

this bus a high school basketball team headed to the big state tournament. investigators believe the 23-year-old driver lost the lid on her drink, spilling it and losing control of her car, swerving it right into the side of the bus. family, friends and fans of the basketball family gathered for a prayer vigil for the students and coach -- coaches injured. they have all been released. they stepped up and did a cheer with the crowd. medical experts are urging parents to pay attention to the signs of headaches and fatigue. they claim there's a rising trend of children and teens being diagnosed with high blood pressure. aaron ferris here had to be hospitalized. genetics can be to blame. >> sometimes if people can make changes in their diet, exercise,

generally healthy diet sometimes they can come off of the medications. >> aaron's blood pressure is being controlled with medication so he's back to enjoying life but it's too early to tell whether his condition is chronic or if it can be reversed. what is the best way to handle stress at work? try a deep breath in and out. a study from the cleveland clinic used a stress management program at a busy corporate call center. part of the study required medication four times per week. participants had less stress after hour weeks and they reported better sleep and weight control. some people are saying he cheated death after getting into a horrific accident at the australian grand prix. he's lucky to be alive. his car was hit and landed in such a way

>> thank you, leigh. good morning, everyone. i just want to remind you we have a collision working in the east lake area. so let's zoom in. this is in pinellas county. injuries are involved in this accident east lake road right at keystone road. you be see some activity because we have injuries. an ambulance on scene. it's off to the shoulder. it's not tieing up any part of the intersection. now i want to head down to sarasota are where we continue to follow serious breaking news. triple fatal accident involving one vehicle. police believe that speed was involved. university is closed right now but they will continue to have this closure for several hours as this investigation continues. now, it is closed between old bradenton and desoto road. your alternate, this is where university dips down here just below the sarasota airport and then it also becomes desoto road, desoto road needs to be your alternate.
