cod. a little breeze tomorrow. a few more clouds in the afternoon. a warm day, a dry day. another good day for beach weather here. temperatures running into the upper 80s. seven-day forecast ahead. >> amaka: breaking news in charlestown. drivers are urged to be cautious while driving in the area of the sullivan square rotary. this is a live look at the pictures of just a mess out there. a dump trek rolled over there, spilling scrap metal. the driver had to pick that vehicle. the main street entrance is currently close as crews work to clear the area. so of course this is leading to some trouble fur early morning commuters. let's send it over to danielle gersh for more. >> danielle: thanks, sarah. we had a similar situation a couple months ago, and it took a while to clean up. this is the sullivan square rotary in charlestown. it looks like this one lane is getting by, but emergency vehicles on scene to clean that up. you can see lots of lights there, as well.

let's get right to 7's kris anderson with the breaking details. >> kris: good morning. we know at least 21 people have been killed and aftershocks continue all across italy. that 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck around 9:30 our time 3-rbg:30 a.m. italian time. its epicenter is believed to be located about 100 miles northeast of rome. the shaking could be felt all throughout central italy. the significant damage. at least six people including a family of four died. one mayor says the damage is so severe that "the town isn't here anymore." crews have been working for several hours to dig through the rubble in hopes of reaching any survivors. a similar earthquake hit that region in 2009 killing 300 people. kris anderson, 7news "today in new england." >> amaka: thanks, kris. happening today, a convicted rapist expected back in court

rolling as police found a key clue in the case. this blue bike, which the victim says the suspect used to follow her. 7's nicole oliverio is live in the south end, and, nicole, police say the man had a troubled past with similar assaults. >> nicole: as you mentioned, he is a convicted rapist. he just "out of jail for less than a year ago for committing a similar crime. a convicted rapist on probation monitoring bracelet when he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in the sound end. >> that's terrifying. >> nicole: police say the suspect, 31-year-old eduardo rodriguez, was on his bike when he approached the victim along the southwest corner of the park around 11:00 monday morning. rodriguez told the victim he had a knife, then walked her to a secluded area a few blocks away and sexually assaulted her near this playground. >> it's definitely a little bit scary. i don't want that to happen to

students or people living in the area. >> nicole: police tracked down rodriguez and charged him with aggravated rape. only 7news was there when police recovered his bike. officers say that g.p.s. bracelet put rodriguez at the scene of the crime monday morning. >> he was on a g.p.s. bracelet. from all the information we have, he cut that bracelet off, and that's why we weren't able to locate him as quick as we wanted to. >> nicole: now he's back behind bars less than a year afterng >> we're happy that we have him in custody because he was a danger to individuals. >> nicole: rodriguez will appear in court later this morning. now, we have seen police patrolling the park so far this morning despite making an arrest trying to make people who live here in this neighborhood safe. that's the latest live in boston, nicole oliverio, 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: a former church pastor in manchester, new hampshire, facing alarming

13-year-old girl. investigators say the assaults happened inside steven jess jessimer's office and at the girl's home. he confided in another pastor and was immediately fired. he was ordered to stay away from all children under the age of 18, including the victim. >> amaka: happening today, the f.a.a. is expected to arrive at the quabbin reservoir. they're investigating what caused a plane the make an er station is talking to the pilot who was on that frightening flight. 7's jennifer eagan joins us with the interview you'll see only here. >> jennifer: that pilot was about mid-flight when he started to have trouble. he was stranded on the reservoir for five hours and says he's just happy to be home. a rhode island pilot made an emergency landing aiming for this sandbar in the middle of the quabbin reservoir. >> i'm exhausted right now. i haven't had a drink since

i'm just exhausted. >> jennifer: the 42-year-old thankful to be going home uninjured, sentiments shared by his wife. >> sarah: >> we're all really happy. >> jennifer: molly, his wife, was having engine problems when he had to land his plane. he had a mechanical issue, leaving him no choice but to touchdown. sky7 h.d. flew over you can see the plane was lucky to grab a piece of land in the middle of 39 square miles of water. the quabbin supplies water to much of eastern massachusetts and planes are not supposed to land here or even fly below 1,200 feet over it. the f.a.a. and the national transportation safety board now investigating, but the pilot's family says they're glad he's safe and sound. >> we're just going to bring him home. >> jennifer: the big qerk how are crews going to get that

state police say there are no environmental concerns from any of. this in the criminal room, jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: . >> sarah: new this morning, two people are rushed to the hospital after a serious crash in wilmington. police say an s.u.v. slammed enter a utility pole on lake street. you can see the front of the car is smashed in. there is no word yet on the victim's conditions or the cause of the crash. this morning a man is recovering after a tree branch takes a dangerous drop in brk rhine and hits him. investigators say a company was a 30-inch branch fell on the man's head. the tree company did not put up any barricades to warn people to stay away from the area. the 29-year-old victim is in serious condition. osha is now investigating what happened. >> ryan:>> amaka: and there arew details about the autographed patriots helmet stolen from a foxborough restaurant. according to the general manager, the man called the next

everybody. it's 5:14. welcome back. it was such a beautiful day yesterday. >> amaka: so far it's been a persian gulf week, hot outside. chris, what can we expect for the rest of the week? >> chris: expect what we've been getting, a lot of dry weather, amaka. the ongoing drought, we expect more of that through the rest of the week into the weekend. cool start this morning. a warm finish this afternoon. tropics picking up. we have some activity out there. across southern new england, there is something to watch perhaps florida down into the gulf of mexico, weekend and early next week. current temperatures right now running in the 50s and 60s. of course, the suburbs, coolest location, and when you get into the lower elevation, especially out there at norwood airport, which is like a fishbowl, that will cool temperatures overnight on these clear skies and light wind night. 52 there right now. wall-to-wall clear skies pretty much across much of new england at this point. once in a while you find a few patches of some thin clouds. that is it.

in check. the temperature can't go below dew point levels. when you get into those hot and humid air masses, the dew points are in the 70s. 70s for the overnight lows. that's not the case. somewhat of more humid air back to the southwest of us into the ohio valley. dew points run entering the low 60s. that will be with us tomorrow. upper 60s on friday, and we're back in the 50s near 60 over the weekend. so the humidity that comes back into the forecast doesn't last all that long. showers and midwest later on this afternoon. i don't expect any showers or storms across much of southern new england over next couple day, although if you head across the berkshires up into vermont, northern new hampshire by late day tomorrow, there may be a couple showers and storms scattered about. for us here, from worcester county east, if there is an isolated shower or thunderstorm, it's going to be overnight tomorrow or into the day on friday, even then few and far between, not a lot of support for the system coming on in. i think that's the only chance of rain we'll see.

planes are not supposed to land in the reservoir or even fly by below 1,200 feet. >> amaka: right now a massachusetts judge is facing tough questions for a sentence he handed down in a high-profile sexual assault case. 7's jennifer eagan joins us with more on why some say the sentence is not enough. >> jennifer: amaka, an online petition removal of that judge. some are upset he sentenced a former athlete to just two years probation. it's a case making national headlines. a former east longmeadow athlete are not face jail time after pleading guilty to assaulting two unconscious classmates. he was sentenced to two years probation. many feel the sentence was too light. >> we don't hear of things like this happening with people who come from less-privileed backgrounds or people of

>> jennifer: becker was charged with two counts of rape stemming from an incident back in april. according to two document, he attacked two victims while they were unconscious. last friday he was allowed to plead guilty the a lesser charge. a judge sentenced him to from base for two years, avoiding jail time and allowed becker to attend college in ohio. a local defense attorney says these cases are challenging. >> the positive of the defet, >> jennifer: becker isn't first star athlete to escape jail time for an offense. stanford university swimmer brock turner received a six-month jail sentence for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman caused a national uproar earlier this year. becker must remain drug and alcohol-free while on probation. if he complies, he will not have to register as a sex offender. in the newsroom, jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england."

boston police officers will begin training with body cameras. according to the "herald," officers in six units will wear cameras today and tomorrow. the full trial period is expected the last for six months. 100 officers were selected for the program after no one central teerd. -- volunteered. boston's city council is set to vote today on whether to approve opening a locally operated medical marijuana facility in allston. compassionate organic hoping to get the entire council to support the proposeed dispensary. councilors approved a dispensary in allston last month, but that company is based outside of massachusetts. later today give charlie baker will celebrate the signing of a bill that is designed to protect pets. the measure allows first responders to break windows to rescue animals from dangerous temperatures. the bill also limits the amount of time that a pet can be

>> amaka: and dangerous drive caught on camera in the ted williams tunnel. you can see cones and a flashing sign closing off the middle lane there, telling drivers to merge, but a car comes barreling down that middle lane, sending that sign flying. thankfully no one in that work zone was hurt. and a former new hampshire state trooper is expected to plead guilty on thursday in connection with a violent arrest in nashua. 31-year-old andrew monaco will plead guilty to three count simple assault for beating richard simone, jr., following a high-speed chase in may. a massachusetts state trooper is facing charges in connection with the incident, as well. monaco faces up to five years behind bars. >> sarah: new this morning, a state trooper makes a drug bust in leominster. a 26-year-old woman arrested after police found more than 400 pills during a traffic stop. this morning the suspect is being held on 7,500 bail. >> amaka: and a wild rescue in

inside. police say that driver lost control on the highway in plainville, rolled up on a guardrail and then crashed into a bridge, causing his car to burst into flames. a trooper and construction worker who were on a nearby road projects rushed to get the man out. thankfully he wasn't hurt. >> sarah: happening now, the hunt continues for a massive snake in maine. now a discovery channel host is in town after someone found a large snakeskin near a river over the weekend. the ten-foot reptile was spotted several times over the summer. police say people should notify them if they spot the snake. >> amaka: that's cool they're here to check it out. >> sarah: interesting to see what they found. >> amaka: a little scary there. still ahead on 7news, some are calling it a cold-hearted ruling. why a judge is tossing out the

and four people are in custody after police make a drug bust on central street. investigators seized cocaine, heroin, crack and cash. these four men were arrested. police have issued a warrant for the arrest of the man. >> sarah: an animals found on a westford farm starved to death. authorities found more than 1,000 animals on the property. many were dead or injured. the animals are now staying at a temporary shelter. about two dozen people are helping the animals. >> amaka: john mccain made comments that could prevent bergdahl from receiving a fair trial. he said he believed bergdahl clearly desserted his post when

>> sarah: new outbreaks for the zika virus in florida are spreading concern. florida health officials say five more cases of zika have been reported. one is outside of miami where most of the cases have been found. officials are now trying to figure out how that person contracted the virus. the total number of local zika cases in florida is now up to 42. experts say drug manufacturers here set their own prices and have exclusive right, delaying the production of cheaper generic drugs. doctors also tend to prescribe more expensive drugs. people who need epipens are now paying the price. the cost of the life-saving device for those with allergies has jumped from $56 to $317 over the last eight years. that's more than a 400% increase.

earthquake strikes central italy in the middle of the night. right now at least 37 are dead and many more feared dead trapped inside that rubble. >> amaka: and emergency crews racing to reach victims. 7's kris anderson joins us with breaking details. >> kris: heartbreaking details this morning. right now aftershocks are continuing all across italy today. the 6.2 magnitude quake stuck around 9:30 our time, 3:30 a.m. italian time. its epicenter is believed to be located 100 miles northeast of rome, felt all throughout parts of central italy. the towns of -- several towns suffered significant damage. the mayor of one town says the damage is so severe that "the town isn't here anymore." crews have been working for several hours to dig through rubble in hopes of reaching survivors. a similar earthquake hit that region in 2009. 300 people were kill then.

a convicted rapist on probation was wearing his g.p.s. monitoring bracelet when he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in the south end. >> that's terrifying. >> nicole: police say the suspect, 31-year-old eduardo rodriguez, was on his bike when he approached the victim along the southwest corner of the park around 11:00 monday morning. rodriguez told the victim he had a knife, then walked her to a secluded area a few blocks away and sexually assaulted her near this playground. >> it's definitely a little bit scary. i don't want that to happen to myself or any of the other students or people living in the area. >> nicole: police tracked down rodriguez and charged him with aggravated rape. only 7news was there when police officers say that g.p.s. bracelet put rodriguez at the scene of the crime monday morning. >> he was on a g.p.s. bracelet. from all the information we have, he cut that bracelet off, and that's why we weren't able to locate him as quick as we wanted to. >> nicole: now he's back behind bars less than a year after being released from prison for a similar crime. >> we're happy that we have him in custody because he was a danger to individuals. >> nicole: rodriguez will go before a judge some time this morning. live in boston, nicole oliverio,

two people are rushed to the hospital after a serious crash in wilmington. police say an s.u.v. slammed enter a utility pole on lake street. you can see the front of the car is smashed in. there is no word yet on the victims' condition or the cause of the crash. >> sarah: and a former church pastor in manchester, new hampshire, facing alarming accusations that he had sex with a 13-year-old girl. >> amaka: investigators say the assault happened inside steven jesmer's office at the dialogue church and at the a police report says jesmer confided to another pastor and was immediately fired. people who know him are shocked. >> he was a nice guy. i mean, until you see something like... until they do something like that. then you wonder why. >> kind of shocking because i always see him every morning when i take my kids to school. >> amaka: a judge ordered jesmer to stay away from all children under the age of 18,

>> jennifer: amaka, there is anin' line petition calling for the removal of that district court judge. some people are upset he sentenced a former high school star athlete to just two years of probation. it's a case making national headlines, a former east longmeadow high school star athlete will not face jail time after pleading guilty to assaulting two unconscious classmates. 18-year-old david becker sentenced to two years probation. many feel the sentence was too light. >> we don't hear of things like this happening with people who come from less-privileged backgrounds or people of different races. >> jennifer: becker was charged with two counts of rape stemming from an incident back in april. according to two document, he attacked two victims while they were unconscious. last friday he was allowed to plead guilty to a lesser charge. a judge sentenced him to probation for two years,

breaking news. new video coming in this morning showing the destruction left behind after a massive earthquake in central italy. emergency crews racing to rescue people and animals from the rubble. the death toll continuing to rise this morning. >> sarah: it's feared dozens may be dead, but over to 7's kris anderson with more on the breaking details. >> kris: police say they have already pulled dozens of survivors from buildings in one town in eastern italy, but at least 38 people have been killed in neighboring communities. that 6.2 struck around 9:30 last night our time, 3:30 a.m. italian time. its epicenter is believed to be located around 100 miles northeast of rome. shaking could be felt around the central part of italy. two towns in particular suffering the extensive damage you see here. crews are using heavy equip to try the clear debris as they search for survivors. a similar earthquake hit that region in 2009 during that quake. 300 people were killed. earlier this morning, pope francis asking pilgrims in st.

a police report says jesmer confided to another pastor and was immediately fired. en and man is recovering this morning after a free larch fell on top of him in brookline. a company was clearing the area when a 30-inch branch fell on the man's head. the 29-year-old victim is in serious condition. the tree company did not put up any barricades to warn people to stay away from the area. osha is now investigating what happened. >> sarah: happening today, the f.a.a. is headed to the site after an emergency landing at the quabbin reservoir in belchertown. they have to figure out how to remove the station from the sand bar. jennifer eagan is here now with the story. >> jennifer: sarah, the pilot's wife tells us her husband was flying from newport to vermont when he started to have trouble. the pilot, a 42-year-old man from rhode island, told state troopers he had a mechanical issue.
