5:01 am
sun setting at 5:38. once the sun does set, you lose several degrees fairly quickly. temperatures back into the low 40s on average by 7:00 p.m. it also implies we get sunshine to warm us up during the day. temperatures currently in the upper 30s and low 40s will move up to near 50 if not the low 50s. we hold in the mid to upper 40s in the worcester hills throughout the day. here is your halloween forecast. a few more clouds around early this morning. otherwise mostly sunny skies and looks great for those little ghosnd running around the neighborhood, hopefully not too much of a sugar high out there over the next few days. and teachers, if you're worried about the kids, tuesday, wednesday, having too much sugar inside in class, get them outside. we have milder weather coming in here for tuesday, wednesday, and even into thursday. any rain on thursday holds off until after the school day. we'll talk more on that first coming up. >> christa: let's get right to that breaking news. drivers beginning to hit the roads for the morning commute. this is first rush hour commute
5:02 am
all-electronic tolling. you see from those live pictures the demolition of those tollbooths already starting. officials warning drivers patterns will look different today. >> sarah: we have live team coverage so you know what to expect on the roads. our coverage begins on the ground. jennifer eagan is live at the weston tolls. jen? >> jennifer: sarah, good morning. if you drive this way in the morning, your commute will be taking you through one of the 23 work zones along the pike. take a look at what's going on behind me here. crews have been out here tearing down the old tollbooths. this demolition will affect traffic. state officials have warned drivers, saying they expect road restrictions to back up traffic. traffic patterns are shifting at the tolls. drivers will be funneled to the outside lanes as the tollbooths on the inside are removed. expect lanes to merge leading up to the tollbooth and remember the speed limit still slows down to 15mph. >> if you can alter your work
5:03 am
that. if you can go in late or really early, this would be a really good time to do that. the overarching public safety message is please obey the 15mph speed limit. stay in your lane. and do not stop at the old tollbooth. there is nobody there to take your money. >> jennifer: so again, traffic approaching the tolls is down to a couple lanes. early in the morning commute it seems to be all free and clear at this point. expect all of this to go on through the end of next year. it does seem like they are making quick work of it so far. live in weston this morning, jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: jen, thank you. our team coverage continues. john cuoco is on sky7 hmm d. with a look at conditions above. good morning, johnson. >> john: this is a day we've been waiting for, for better or

tolls. you see some of the construction going on here at the weston tolls. you'll notice a lot of cars moving through the cars right now. that's expected at 5:00 a.m. but this is one of those 23 work zones all along the pike that you'll see this morning. a lot of construction. it will probably look a lot different in about an hour or some one of the things jen had brought up in her live report was that 15mph. that's something they're really trying to, for word, drive home. even when you don't see a lot of cars on the road, use that 15mph speed limit going through because there is a lot of construction out there today. right now not a lot of cars moving through the tolls right now. you can see here, the construction in the center, they're moving people to the left and the right of that, but this will probably be a much different experience for people trying to move through these tolls if they're on their way to work, wherever they're going this morning, if they're used to going a certain way, it's
5:05 am
back the marshall hook who has a look out there on the road. >> marshall: indeed. from road level, from the air down to road level, we're at framingham. these are the route 9 tolls. you can see that guy said don't stop at the tollbooth, well, in this case there isn't much of a tollbooth to stop at. just the concrete outline where it used to be. that's the major part of the construction is the tearing down of all that. but once you get through it, evhi running pretty well. i think a lot of the delays will come just from people driving up to these toll boots and in the really knowing where to go. the good news is once we get past today, whatever delays we experience, at least to some degree, will probably lessen going into tomorrow, and as far as any other delays our there, danielle gersh will give us the whole traffic picture. >> danielle: you know, if you're getting ready to head out the door right now, you're in good shape. smart thinking. it's a look at the pike right now. we're not seeing any issues.
5:06 am
you're in good shape so far this morning. you can see all of that green. but as you've been hearing, give yourself some extra time this morning if you commute into town on the pike. north of town, route 2-s and 3 looking fine. 93 fine back the 495. heading into town on route 1, you're in good shape. braintree to boston northbound on the expressway, just ten minutes. an then south of town, route 3, 24 and 95 all looking good. let's take a look at those drive times if you're getting ready to head out the door. just ten minutes brailt -- braintree toos 12 minutes from 128. the "t" and commuter rail starting the morning on schedule. back to you, guys. >> sarah: be sure the stay with 7news for the latest on the toll changes when we aren't on the air, you can get updates online at whdh.com. >> christa: breaking overnight, a tractor-trailer crashing on 495 north in foxboro. officials say one person was injured. they were taken to rhode island hospital. crews working to get that tractor-trailer removed before the morning commute began.

5:16 am
outside this morning, although probably not too many costumes at 7:00 a.m. walking out the door. it is halloween. perhaps your workplace does dress up for that. take a look at the forecast model for today, but tuesday into wednesday, it remains dry. so we have dry weather over the next few days. one thing you'll notice, temperatures warming up by mid-week. we're well into the 60s again on wednesday and on thursday. however, thursday will be the last day that we spend with temperatures well above average for this time of year. seven to nine days out ahead of us as this front will cross on throuh and behind it some cooler weather working back into and to get there we will gong.- through a band of some showers, so some rain likely late thursday into thursday night. until then we are dry. of course, that includes the all-important forecast for this evening. temperatures this afternoon running in the low 50s for many of us in eastern mass. mid-40s in worcester hills. so a bit of a cool breeze throughout the day.
5:17 am
have been close to season l levels if not below it there. and it's been dry. 2014 and 2015. we had partly cloudy skies in 2012. that was in the wake of hurricane sandy. the year before that in 2011, that was in the wake of the big snowstorm we had across much of new england. so we do have some issues or we did have some issues, leftover power issues or clean-up issues back in none of that this year. we're looking forward to a dry halloween. dry air mass in place. winds becoming lighter. once that sun sets, temperatures will fade fast. it will be a cool one for the trick-or-treaters outside this evening. not terribly cold, though. low to mid-40s. light wind should be fairly easy for them to keep warm. they'll be running around in the house. 26 to 38 eventually for the overnight lows. 26 in the colder suburbs. above 38 degrees in boston. take a look at the forecast over

well into the 60s on wednesday and thursday. and we cool it back down to end the week. guys? >> christa: okay. the patriots with a big win and a big game for gronk. >> look at that separation. he scores. touchdown patriots! >> christa: oh, yeah, and with a bow rob gronkowski solidifying his place in patriots' history. the tight end setting the record for most touchdowns in franchise history. so sunday's win definitely a little sweet revenge for new england after that don't want to talk about that anymore. here's 7's trey daerr with the latest from buffalo. tray. >>. >> definitely an honor to come home to my hometown and get that record. >> he's a dynamic player for us, there's in doubt. he makes great plays in the pass game. he's done an amazing job since he's been here. >> trey: no player in patriots' history owns more touchdown receptions than rob gronkowski, capping off number 69 with a little more than that
5:19 am
>> just bowing, it was awesome, but i want the giver a shout-out to my mom yesterday. the first thing yesterday, i saw her. she came to my hotel. we sat down. she said, "rob, i'm so proud of you when you score your 69th touchdown, so hi, mom, and thank you." >> trey: gronk the star of the game on a day when the pats' offense answered every buffalo touchdown. >> at some point they try the take a shot. that's when we got the take our shots. for tom brady, the one he gets to watch in the fourth quarter. >> i think the best part is the end. that's the best part. we've had a lot of experiences where there are 70,000 people against you and at the end there are 5,000 patriots fan on the road cheering for you. >> everyone talks all time, they got that win 16-0, 16 to nothing, whatever it was, i'm so glad we came in here and showed them what we're really about. >> christa: patriots 4-0 in tom brady's four games back and

5:31 am
french. happy halloween, everybody. the bug question is for chris lambert. how is first for all those trick-or-treat centers. >> chris: two thumbs-up. a little bit on the cooler side, but we are dry. we don't have to contend with bitter cold this week. 43 in boston now. 47 in worcester. 40 in bedford. the rain we had late yesterday and last night now off to the east of us in its wake. we're clearing out. should have a good deal of sunshine throughout the day. temperatures fairly steady. we'll increase several d quits in the low 50s on average. a bit of a cool breeze throughout the day, as well. 10 to 15mph. it does turn cooler as it goes through the evening hours. so once the sun does set, expect those temperatures to slide several degrees fairly quickly. what does that mean for the all-important trick-or-treat forecast around 5:00 p.m.? many towns averaging upper 40s and fade back to average in the low 40s by 7:00 p.m. more on that seven-day forecast ahead. >> sarah: back to breaking
5:32 am
officials have been warning drivers about. today is the first morning commute since the transition to all-electronic tolling began on friday. drivers should expect delays on the mass pike. >> christa: traffic patterns will look different out on the road. we have team coverage to get you started. we're beginning with jennifer eagan, who is at the weston tolls. looks like things are looking nice behind you for now, jen. >> jennifer: it's not too bad so far this morning. take a look further down the pike, th i coming toward us. you can see things are starting to possibly back up a little bit. that's in part because of the traffic shift, the shift in the pattern here. they're pairing things down the a couple of lanes as you approach the tolls. that's because they have been pairing -- tearing down some of the tolls here. they're working on the inside right now. so traffic is being routessed to the outside lanes at this point in time. transportation officials are saying if you can work from home, if you can shift your hours or possibly take the mbta,
5:33 am
because they do expect all of these changes, this demolition, the work zone here at the tolls along the mass pike to affect traffic and back it up. again, we've started to see things slow down a little bit here as we hit around 5:30 a.m. and again, also remember, as you approach the tolls, these speed limits still go down to 15mph here. that's what they want you to do. it could quite possibly really back up traffic throughout the morning. 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: our live team coverage continues with john cuoco who is in sky7 h.d. with a look at conditions above. hey, john. >> john: right now it's still a little bit early. not too many people out here on the roads. let's give you a look down there and give you a picture. this is a perfect fixture of what's going on here on the mass pike. you can see how construction zones are in the center. that's where they're doing most of their demo work. the cars are moving to the left
5:34 am
of cars on the roads just yet, but still massdot making sure people plan ahead. because this is probably going to be a much different experience than what people are used to. they want the make sure people get out here on the roads, give themselves enough time to get to work or wherever they're going today. so again, not a ton of cars out here on the roads just yet, but that could likely change in about a half an hour, maybe about an hour. you can see a lot more cars out here on the roads. jen mentioned it. sure people remember this, but people have to make sure that they she down through these work zones, whether it's like it looks now, with not so many cars on the roads, or when it starts getting a little bit more packed out there, but take a look with marshall hook out there on the roads right now. >> marshall: all right, john. from the sky down to the ground, and you can see that the dot has wasted no time with the sign boards. use caution, no stopping at the booths. that's what they say.
5:35 am
essentially getting on the pike from 495. as we come around the bend, you will see the construction here with the number of the jersey barriers up, the booths that are closed off right now. no destruction, no taking down of the booths has yet begun here, but they have closed them off. they'll obviously start. as we go through the tollbooth, nobody is there. you're not supposed to stop. you're just supposed to go through. once you get through that, witness you get on the traffic problems will be alleviated. most of the delays we see are folks approaching those tollbooths not knowing exactly what to do, going through them slowly and cautiously, as you should do. once you get on the roads, things moving just fine, at least now in the early going. for now the broader traffic picture, here's danielle gersh. >> danielle: thanks, marshal. things aren't too bad out there yet. definitely slowing down as you make your way through the tolls. here's a look at the pike right now. this is near allston-brighton. things looking good so far this morning. let's go to the maps.
5:36 am
pike. if you're headed out the door right now, you're in good shape. back to 495 through framingham, things looking good all the way inside 128 on the pike. so from 495 into boston pike eastbound right now, it's about half an hour. so that's pretty normal actually. now, north of town, route 2 and 3 looking good. 93 fine back to 495 still this morning. route 1 looking good heading into boston. now, south of town, we do have an accident, route 3 northbound, and that's at the braintree split. so that's probably going to slow things down south of town. good. so far this morning, let's take a look at those drive times if you're getting ready to head out the door. 11 minutes braintree to boston expressway. 12 minutes into town on the pike from 128. that's not too bad yet. 93 southbound, 128 to the zakim bridge, 11 minutes. the "t" and commuter rail running on schedule. back to you, guys. ism right now the investigation continues after police say they were forced to fire killing a mentally disturbed man who allegedly attacked offers with

5:49 am
heading toward us on the approach to the weston tolls. part of the problem here is the lanes are merging approaching the tolls. that's because they have been tearing down the tollbooths on the inside. so you're being shifted to the outside lanes as you approach the tolls. state officials have said if you can possibly work from home, shift your hours or take the "t," this could be the week to do it. this could be the time to do it if you're passing through one of these work zones along the pike. they do expect this to take some time. yo still supposed to slow down to about 15mph as you passes through the tollbooths, but you don't stop and give anyone money because there's in one. there again, these are the old tollbooths now as the state shifts over to electronic tolling. so here this morning, we've seen things slowing down because again, it is down to just a couple lanes as you pass through the tollbooths, not too bad, but do expect a back-up this morning. we're live in weston this morning, jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: all right, jen.

john? >> john: so we're up over the western tolls right now. we can give you a really good look at something construction and some of the cars coming through the area. take a look down there right now. so you can see some of the work that's being done right there in the center of the mass pike. this is one of those 23 work zones going on right now. so the other thing you can see here, cars moving through fairly smoothly. it is starting to slow down just a little bit now that we're getting later into the morning. so this is what throughout the morning, cars moving through those tolls. the one thing that mass dotted really trying to drive home this morning, people need to be prepared, people need to leave early, but this is going to be a different experience than they're used to if they're on their way to work. they need the plan ahead. that's the key here for people this morning, making sure they plan ahead. the other thing, make sure they drive through these tolls slowly. there's a 15mph speed limit. mass dotted making sure people abide by that this morning because it's going to be a lot of construction going on.
5:51 am
like this morning, people moving through the area, fairly smoothly. that could change obviously as we get closer to 6:00, maybe 6:30. things might start getting more backed up. but for a few of the roads themselves, take a look with marshall hook. marshall? >> marshall: john, right here on the roads we are getting on to the pike from route 30 here on the natick-framingham line. and you can see the traffic is starting to build. whereas the last couple construction going on. this one is in full demolition mode. ands that restricting the ability for cars to kind of get through the access. this is what's going to cause the delays that we're going to see. once those booths that are full destruction mode get going, you're going the clamp down on the ability for cars to get through, and that's what we're seeing here at route 30. sign boards everywhere, police are out directing traffic, and again, now there is traffic

6:33 am
if you can possibly work from home, if you can change or shift your hours at all or take the "t," this would be the time to do that. as we just mentioned a moment ago, the speed limit reduces down to 15mph through these construction zones, and again through the tollbooths, as well. there are a lot of law enforcement and crews out here. they want you to be careful of everyones that in this area as this demolition goes on. and again, traffic is slowing down a little bit. but it is stillin here. live in weston this morning, jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: all right, jen, thank you. take a look from above. sky7 h.d. john cuoco is reporting for us now. john? >> john: we've been up over the mass pike all morning. we started at the weston tolls. we've now moved to the allston brighton tolls. take a look down there to see how it looks. this is pretty much the same story we've been seeing all morning. you see the construction right there in the center. you see cars moving off to either side. and it's been a fairly good
6:34 am
the volume has picked up a little bit. but this is sort of what we've been seeing all morning. cars kind of moving through the area slowly. but the key this morning, is to be prepared. mass dot telling people that they should anticipate a different experience than what they're used to on their usual morning commute where they're going to work on anywhere else. they should expect a little bit more of a back-up. but from what we've seen this morning, we've been up since at 5:00, this is sort of the same picture, the construction going on in the center, cars movin should anticipate maybe a little bit more of a difficult commute as the morning continues. mass dot telling people even though it look like this, definitely still go slow, 15mph. make sure people abide by that. marshall hook out there on the roads right now. what's it looking like for you, marshall in. >> marshall: well, we're down on the ground right where you're above us. we're going through these tolls. this is not the main

you can't see. these are the ones as you get off the memorial drive area. but you can see a quick ride through. the tollbooths are shut down. the traffic pattern once you get on the pike is the same as it's always been. i said it before. i'll say it again. it seems as though everyone is heeding the warning to either alter their commute times or find an alternate way because we are not seeing the heavy traffic that the dot warned us about, at least not yet. i take that as good news. and danielle gersh will tell me that i am trying again, right, danielle? >> danielle: you don't want the speak too soon. still give yourself plenty of time. better to be safe than sorry, right? here's a look at the pike. this is about a mile before the allston-brighton tolls. you just saw a live picture of what it look like there. here also not looking too bad. let's go to the maps. you'll see mostly green on the pike this morning. you're slowing down a little bit through framingham as you pass over 128. certainly not seeing any of those major delays that we were kind of expecting.
