numbers behind the minimum wage. minimum wage workers are getting some major attention lately. all three democratic presidential candidates say they should get a substantial mandatory raise. by the numbers... lower paid earners make up a small percent of the workforce. there are roughly 77 million people working in our country. about four percent...one in 25 make minimum wage of 7.25 an hour or less. those who make less usually get tips and may actually then make more than minimum. we wanted to see what those at the bottom of the wage scale do for a living. the bureau of labor statistics helped us out. about 21,000 fix and install things for a living. about 183,000 clean and maintain the grounds or buildings. the biggest category, though...the food business. about 1.5 million americans cook, serve and clean up your food for minimum wage or less. who are the people doing these jobs? most are the young. slightly more than half are under the

spring of 20-16 and they would be transferred to other hotels at that time. now they have just 4 days to find new jobs. they say it's like a slap in the face. 20:56:51-20:57:05 "it's not a big deal to them because it doesn't affect them but to us it's 16 families that have to go without, that have to just wing it." "it doesn't seem like a lot but it's 16 families that are not gonna have this money coming in and having 4 days to find a job is not a lot at all." the hotel stopped accepting guests last thursday and anyone with reservations will be tranferred to the residence inn and hampton inn. the company's corporate director was unavailable for comment but said more would be explained in a news release sometime today. downtown des moines' newest hotel took a big step forward last night. the city council signed off on its portion of making the events center hotel a reality. work will begin almost immediately. demolition will start in early

december. construction will begin in february. the building is expected to open by the end of 2017. yesterday we told you to expect a major announcement on the future of walnut street in downtown des moines. this morning we found out what it is ... wells fargo is renovating its lobby. the bank on walnut street will transform its entryway into a museum honoring the history of the company and des moines. it will be the 12th bank-museum of its kind. while it might not be an earth-shattering announcement, des moines officials say it is a small step towards creating a better downtown. 110904-110923 "this is one more reason to bring your family down here ... i should bring my kids down here ... more people, more foot traffic is what we're aiming for here." the museum will be open by this time next year. university of iowa students and

faculty were alerted to three reported sexual assaults near campus, this morning. a man wearing a flannel shirt and flip-flops reportedly tried to grope three women near the university of iowa hospital. that makes nine reported assaults near the campus so far this semmester. iowa state campus police are investigating the death of a male student found last night near railroad tracks. the student's name is not being released. police say they don't suspect foul play... but the exact details of how he died are still being investigated. anyone with information is asked to call police. on thursday morning the iowa department of public safety will honor five individuals with one of the state's highest awards. the sullivan brothers' award of valor honors police officers and firefighters who risk their lives to save others. among this year's honorees will be bradley melton of the nevada fire department and chris brandes of the nevada police department. in february the two men ran into a burning apartment complex to make sure it was evacuated. they
