"this was a highly significant explosion. there is not a lot that has been experienced like this in the city of fitchburg that i've been aware of." plus, it looks like war zone near madison this morning after a home blows up -- scattering debris for miles and sending one person to the hospital. an update on the investigation is straight ahead.

green on traffic map = no delays milwaukee once again in be in the national spotlight --- today a well-known civil rights leader will attend the funeral for sylville smith. he was shot and killed by police --- sparking violence in the sherman park neighborhood. fox6's deandra corinthios joins us live from the northwest side with more. we're told representatives from al and reverend jesse jackson of the rainbow push coalition...will deliver the eulogy.. the visitation will begin this morning at 10 am the funeral begins at noon there are still many unanswered questions...when it comes to the investigation into the shooting.. that took place august 13th near 44th and auer. police say body camera footage--which has not yet been released -- clearly shows smith holding a handgun and turning towards an officer when he was shot.

they say a 2-year-old boy was found unresponsive after being put down for a nap. this is the third time in the last ten days --- the milwaukee examiner's office has been called to investigate the death of child. we are learning new information after a home explodes near madsion. this morning one person is recovering in the hospital. angelica joins us from the newsroom with details. the explosion happened yesterday evening in fitchburg which is just sound of madison. the city's fire chief says a man is in fifties was pulled from the debris in the front yard of the home. he is currently in critical condition. according to officials, the blast was so strong it sent debris for nearly a half of mile and about 20 homes were damaged from the explosion. "there area buildings that will have to be evaluated of those 20. we have a number of buildings that have had windows broken so the structural

who are displaced from the explosion. right now --- crews are investigating what sparked the blast. kim and jessob. back to you. a milwaukee catholic sisterhood is mourning the loss of one of its nuns after she murdered in a home in mississippi. sister margaret held and another catholic nun from kentucky were found stabbed inside their home after they didn't show up at a clinic where they practitioners in central mississippi. we are told held had worked in rural mississippi since 1975. the 68-year-old was from the school sisters of st. francis, on milwaukee's south side. the investigation into the double homicide is on-going. we are watching and waiting to find out if steven avery's attorney will file paper work to prove he's innocent. kathleen zellner says the motion would retest d-n-a evidence in the avery case and possibly present an alternate theory on who killed

jackson...who will officiate the funeral sylville smith's death brought tensions in the sherman park neighborhood to a head... angry crowds took to the streets..clashing with police businesses were looted and torched... sherman park was shut down and a curfew was put in place. department of justice officials...continue to investigate the circumstances that led up to...and that followed the shooting. officer's body camera footage...which police say shows smith was armed with a gun when he was shot. amidst all of this...smith's family will try to heal today..as they bury their son. the group milwaukee matters...is coordinating the funeral. they stepped in to support them during the unrest. "i have volunteers that come in, you know, a psychologist came in and spoke with the family and i came in to speak with the family to prepare them as a bridge between the violence and knowing that there

ex- girlfriend and her ex-husband. then last week, a suspicious package was dropped off at the woman's apartment. inside...a live ball python. authorities say it's an extremely disturbing pattern of behavior... sometimes crimes, you make one bad decision and you steal something from a store, for example. in a case like this, you have someone who has calculated a move, has done it again, and then planned the next move. we also spoke with a woman w sanctuary. she says ball pythons are popular pets because they ball up when they're scared instead of striking out. if convicted, burrows faces a maximum sentence of three-and-a-half years in prison. now the latest on u-s swimmer scandal in rio. brazilian police are now charging olympic swimmer ryan lochte with falsely reporting a crime. this is surveillance video from the alleged incident. lochte had originally said that he and three other swimmers were robbed at gunpoint at a gas

'over- exaggerated' the story. the 12-time olympic medalist will be summoned to rio, according to officials. but he doesn't have to appear in court and can opt to send a lawyer instead. if convicted, the 32-year-old could face between one to six months in jail...or pay a fine. the four-time olympian is also facing potential discipline from the u-s and international olympic committees. cleanup continues this morning after a series of tornadoes tore through indiana. the national weather service says a shows that an e-f-3 tornado hit kokomo, indiana...and had an estimated peak wind of 152 miles per hour. the weather service says that twister traveled nearly 5 miles...and was about 300 yards wide the tornado leveled a starbucks near the markland mall. more than 20 people were crammed into the bathrooms at that starbucks. thankfully no serious injuries have been reported. in central italy... aftershocks are making things difficult as

following a deadly earthquake. the death toll is growing now -- -267 people are confirmed dead and nearly 400 injured. scott mclean is there with and update on the rescue efforts. in central italy, residents and rescue workers alike have been shaken by a series of aftershocks. the aftershocks are making the work of finding survivors even more difficult -- these ancient towns have narrow streets, easily blocked by tumbling debris. even though ev the chances of finding survivors alive is decreasing with every passing hour, they keep digging. tour guide francesco miglio shot these images in amatrice. he lives in rome but rushed to the hard- hit city to look for relatives. his relatives escaped ... but the scene was heart-breaking: francesco miglio/has relatives in amatrice "we tried to help. the people were actually digging with their hands because -- what i would like to say is that there were so many people -- they came out not dead and
