warnings have been dropped - but tropical warnings still remain in place. the u.s. national hurricane center says the storm's maximum sustained winds have decreased from 80 miles per hour to roughly 55 miles per hour as the storm has crossed over into georgia... but outer bands from the storm are still dumping rain in the tampa bay area. just after midnight... hermine slammed into florida with strong winds and heavy rain... and thousands of residents in the sunshine state are waking up without power this mornin. northeast - people are still expecting to face heavy downpours and deadly flooding... along with strong riptides in tourist hotspots like the jersey shoreline. hermine is the first hurricane to hit florida directly... since wilma in 2005. chief meteorologist rob haswell will have more on the storm coming up on wakeup. more news from overnight - one person rescued from a fire in whitefish bay. north shore fire crews were called out to the scene near henry clay

the person rescued was evaluated by paramedics on scene...but their condition is not known at this time. no word yet on what caused the blaze. and milwaukee police investigating three shootings overnight. the first taking place near 86th and hampton. police say a 21-year-old man was shot after two people tried robbing him.. the man is expected to survive and police continue to search for the suspects. police say the other two shootings...the circumstances remain unclear at this point in time. we're told a 26-year-old man was shot near 20th and nash around 1:45 a- m..and s expected to survive. and then around 3:15....a 35-year-old man showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound....but police don't know where the shooting actually took place. he is also expected to survive...and police continue to investigate. sobering new numbers on violence in milwaukee. the city's homicide rate for the month of august is one for the record books... deandra corinthios is live from mpd headquarters downtown...with a message from police chief ed flynn...

there were 24 homicides in august. the highest total in 25 years when police discovered the bodies of serial killer jeffery dahmer's victims... in july of 1991. in a news conference thursday chief flynn said milwaukee's murder rate was so high...it surpassed chicago. this...despite the fact that chicago also experienced a record-setting 90 homicides in august. flynn says the majority of homid from gun violence between convicted offenders... and he says the majority of homicide victims and assailants are african americans. mpd has taken 16 hundred guns off the streets so far this year but he says part of the solution... should be tougher laws...to crack down on felons caught in possession of a firearm. making you know conceal carry illegally a misdemeanor no matter how many times youre arrested is foolish, its foolhardy. flynn says another issue is
