warnings have been dropped - but tropical warnings still remain in place. the u.s. national hurricane center says the storm's maximum sustained winds have decreased from 80 miles per hour to roughly 55 miles per hour as the storm has crossed over into georgia... but outer bands from the storm are still dumping rain in the tampa bay area. just after midnight... hermine slammed into florida with strong winds and heavy rain... and thousands of residents in the sunshine state are waking up without power this mornin. northeast - people are still expecting to face heavy downpours and deadly flooding... along with strong riptides in tourist hotspots like the jersey shoreline. hermine is the first hurricane to hit florida directly... since wilma in 2005. chief meteorologist rob haswell will have more on the storm coming up on wakeup. more news from overnight - one person rescued from a fire in whitefish bay. north shore fire crews were called out to the scene near henry clay

the person rescued was evaluated by paramedics on scene...but their condition is not known at this time. no word yet on what caused the blaze. and milwaukee police investigating three shootings overnight. the first taking place near 86th and hampton. police say a 21-year-old man was shot after two people tried robbing him.. the man is expected to survive and police continue to search for the suspects. police say the other two shootings...the circumstances remain unclear at this point in time. we're told a 26-year-old man was shot near 20th and nash around 1:45 a- m..and s expected to survive. and then around 3:15....a 35-year-old man showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound....but police don't know where the shooting actually took place. he is also expected to survive...and police continue to investigate. sobering new numbers on violence in milwaukee. the city's homicide rate for the month of august is one for the record books... deandra corinthios is live from mpd headquarters downtown...with a message from police chief ed flynn...

there were 24 homicides in august. the highest total in 25 years when police discovered the bodies of serial killer jeffery dahmer's victims... in july of 1991. in a news conference thursday chief flynn said milwaukee's murder rate was so high...it surpassed chicago. this...despite the fact that chicago also experienced a record-setting 90 homicides in august. flynn says the majority of homid from gun violence between convicted offenders... and he says the majority of homicide victims and assailants are african americans. mpd has taken 16 hundred guns off the streets so far this year but he says part of the solution... should be tougher laws...to crack down on felons caught in possession of a firearm. making you know conceal carry illegally a misdemeanor no matter how many times youre arrested is foolish, its foolhardy. flynn says another issue is

dewpoint: wind: e 3-7 mph he was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison... for child porn distribution and child exploitation. but now - jared fogle is turning the tables... and suing the parents of one of his victim. of "jane doe" ... who sued him and his ex-exployee russell taylor earlier this year. in his lawsuit, obtained by tmz, fogle says the girl's parents screwed her up when they got divorced. he says they frequently fought and abused alcohol in front of "jane doe" which caused her to suffer major depression and engage in "destructive behaviors." fogle says the girl's parents should be partially or fully responsible for all the claims she's making against him.

new right now - 75-percent of residents in tallahassee, florida... now without power... after hermine ripped through the area this morning. at least 100-thousand people now listed in tallahassee without electricity. hermine... is the first hurricane to hit florida... since wilma back in 2005. already... it's been downgraded back to a tropical storm... but it's still wreaking havoc. kim's in studio with the very latest. hermine made landfall in florida's big bend area shortly after midnight... with maximum sustained winds of roughly 80 miles per hour. less than three to a tropical storm as it moved further inland - but that doesn't mean the danger is any less imminent for those living in its path. the u-s national hurricane center says the storm's winds have decreased to 70 miles per hour... as it slowly moves northeast. thousands across the gulf coast... hunkered down ahead of hurricane hermine's landfall. rain has pounded the region since wednesday... but as the actual storm moves across land... forecasters are predicting much more rain and

customers in tallahassee, florida, lost power as winds and rain from the hurricane struck the city. many residents in the sunshine state... riding it out in shelters. happening now - heavy rains are moving into the carolinas from hermine... which became the first hurricane to hit florida since wilma in 2005. nicole's following the latest developments in the newsroom and nicole - hermine was downgraded to a tropical storm before it moved into georgia and the carolinas? hermine made landfall overnight with 80 mile per hour winds... shortly before 4 a-m... it weakened to a tropical storm. right now... the storm is moving up the coast - from georgia... to the carolinas... flash flood watches are posted everywhere except south carolina's far northwest corner. even as hermine weakens... states along the coast are watching out for downpours and deadly flooding... as well as strong rip tides at the beach. residents in some low-lying parts of florida were evacuated... and others boarded up their windows and filled sandbags to keep water away.

"it's very devastating because never would i have thought it would be my child. it really hits home when it happens to you." bennett's family says they felt as though his homicide may have been overshadowed by what took place in sherman park. they are hopeful someone will be held responsible for bennett's murder. meanwhile... smith and wesson have surged 40 percent compared to a year ago... and the gun maker has doubled its profits. smith and wesson's c-e-o credits "strong consumer demand" for the surge. the company reported sales of its handguns rose 42 percent... and long guns - like shotguns... hunting rifles and semi-automatic rifles... spiked 119 percent. analysts say it's the latest evidence of a thriving gun industry... in part due to concerns among some that a string of mass shootings may

homes. the national hurricane center says storm surges in parts of florida... could reach nine feet this morning... during high tides. florida's governor ordered government offices in 51 counties to close down yesterday at noon. this is the first hurricane to make landfall in the sunshine state... since wilma in 2005. all along the eastern seaboard... beach towns are on high alert. up north in new jersey... lifeguards are expecting fewer people to stop by the beach this labor day weekend.... thn forecast. hermine could also cause coastal flooding, beach erosion, rip currents and heavy surf. the experts are warning this will not be ideal weather for a dip in the ocean, and say conditions will be dangerous.
