academic year, a major shakeup. >> more than 200 teachers heard the final bell on friday. students are now fighting for their js. brianne carter has more about a proposed protest. >> it is quiet at this hour. it was anything but last friday when these layoffs were first announced. teachers and parents are now expected to hold a rally this morning. teachers say they just want their jobs back. >> sheila has been an employee for more than three decades. on friday, and she was stripped of her job. >> i am hurt. >> she is among the more than 300 employees that was handed a pink slip. parents and teachers are not taking action. they plan to hold a rally

up. kathy park is live with the very latest. >> the massive attack this weekend happened near the pakistan border. two u.s. bases or storms, killing eight u.s. troops. officials are divided on whether or not to send in more troops. there is concern at the polling soldiers out could put the risk in falling into the control of the taliban. the base that was attacked this weekend was supposed to close in a couple of days. this was delayed because of military bureaucracy. activists were reminded about the cost of war. 800 pairs of combat boots were placed on the ellipse. later, protesters will hold an anti-war rally towards the white house.

kathy park, abc 7 news. more violence in pakistan. a suicide bomber blew himself up. at least three people were killed. several others were hurt. this comes one day after the new leader vowed no violence response to u.s. missile strikes. president obama meets with doctors from across the country at the white house today. congress picks up what could be a final weeks of debate on the health care proposal. the president will make a speech at the rose garden this morning. the senate finance committee resumes talks on their version of the bill. the supreme court will begin a new session today. it is the first for new just just selling it sotomayor. there will be a challenge to a

handgun ban in chicago. 6 of the nine justices joined joe biden for the annual red mass. this was at the cathedral of st. matthew the apostle. there was a plea for the rights of the unborn, protesters were demonstrating in front of the church. the deadline to register for the virginia election is today. the governor's race is not sparking a lot of registration activity. many virginians are already in the system. 436,000 new voters registered between january and october of last year. creigh deeds will make a

campaign stop in the shirlington shopping center in arlington. along with mark warner and jim moran. there will be speaking about the plan to jump-start the economy. it includes a tax credit for any job created. the campaign is getting more money from the democratic national committee. they plan to announce they're donating at another $1 million. they're also planning to donate resources including staffers and expertise in technology. they are stepping up the commitment after seeing the lead by bob mcdonnell lesson. despite another rocky start, coach zorn took home a winner yesterday. >> campbell going deep for santana moss. he has done it. touchdown!

pick of the litter. the government lied about the health of some of the nation's biggest banks. >> a horror movie takes the top spot at the box office. jeremy hubbard has all of the numbers. a damaging new report on the bank bailout. it watchdog said the treasury and federal reserve lied when they said the first banks receiving bailouts were healthy. there were concerns about several of those banks. the government said the misleading statements could underline the public's support in the future. corporate earnings. investors are looking for some upbeat news. the benchmark fell 177 points last week. results from companies including pepsi and costco are

due this week. september retail sales will be closely watched. people will be looking for clues about the holiday shopping season. stores will be adjusting inventories in hopes to avoid huge price cops. intensive care unit and 28 have died of the disease. 6:32. as the fighting rages in afghanistan, the debate over strategy heats up on capitol hill. >> there could be more heat for a plant after a deadly weekend. kathy park has the latest. >> the a massive attack this weekend increases the pressure on president obama's administration and his strategy in afghanistan. officials are divided on whether to send in more troops or scale back. hundreds of insurgents armed with rifles and grenades stormed this outpost. eight u.s. soldiers were killed, the deadliest attack in more than a year. this is fueling the debate of the direction of this war.

strategy in afghanistan. kathy park, abc 7 news. >> thank you. cleanup continues in the south pacific. villagers gathered to mourn the dead. at least 176 people were killed. hundreds of responders are now on the ground including fema and the american red cross. they're transporting medical supplies. heavy rains triggered another landslide in indonesia. the search has been called off for the hundreds still missing from wednesday's earthquake. that death toll is now at 1100. metro is losing millions because fewer people are taking public transportation. trent ridership wasdown nearly 4% in july.

the red line has seen -- the scene of the deadly train crash, saw the biggest drop, more than 10% in july and more than 80% in august. metro could lose over $22 million in revenue if the pace continues. trains have been running slower between the takoma and fort totten stations since the june crash. metro pushed the date back to early september to fix the rails. they say the work is taking longer than expected. 39 people arrested are expected back in federal court today. the suspects have all pleaded not guilty. prosecutors say they paid more than $300,000 in bribes to get cab licenses. the chief of staff for jim graham has already pleaded not

guilty to charges of taking bribes to influence legislation. graham is not been accused of any wrongdoing. this year's army race is being called a big success. >> wounded warriors took place yesterday. soldiers who lost limb joints nearly 30,000 others ran through the streets of arlington and the district. during them was a soldier who was blinded while serving on the front lines in iraq. >> i think about how fortunate i am to still be able to run. i have not felt pain and it lets me know i'm still alive. >> he completed his third race in 84 minutes. there were other shall races in the rock in afghanistan. ken lewis is out.

now bank of america is looking for a new leader. >> linda bell joins us now. bank of america colorado ken lewis has put the bank back in the spotlight. we hear the plan to make a decision on the appointment of an emergency ceo this week. they are working on a contingency plan in case ken lewis steps down before the end of the year. the bank did not name a replacement after ken lewis said last week he was stepping down. stock index futures are higher ahead of a report that may show the services industry stabilized last month. simmons bedding will soon file for bankruptcy protection. the bnkruptcy move is part of an agreement by owners to sell
