>> a local man is accused by federal authorities of operating a multimillion dollar ponzi scheme. among his victims -- local charities. we are live in northwest washington with more on this. richard? >> these court documents outline a sad but fascinating story. a $27 million ponzi scheme that money all gone the focus of a federal investigation. >> do a web search of garfield taylor -- >> they said that he would be so greedy and just criminal. >> and they found among other entries this profile of a d.
crrment business with assets of up to $1 million a year. he was very polished. he came across as very savvy. but this court filing by the s.e.c. paints a very different picture. >> he would pay a different picture. >> of a man living large in this million dollar rockville mansion who master-minded a $27 million ponzi scheme defrauding investors. >> he said it was a conservative investment and instead gambling their investments on risky option trading. among the losers a charity for poor single moms. allegedly lost $8 million. >> they outright stole money stole our investments. >> taylor diverted $5 million for his own use including $73,000 for private school for his children. >> no one answered the door at taylor's house.
for investors like hill crest, the losses are difficult to swallow. >> it's been devastating and it has had a devastating impact on our organization. >> now taylor told his clients he could get them a 20% return on their investment with little risk. in fact, we're told it was risky behavior that caused the whole thing to collapse. this is a complex investigation. it's expected to appear before a federal judge in about a year. >> wow, a whole year. so it will continue for quite some time. thank you. well, still to come on abc 7 news, we are back with you're complete forecast which does include rain. and working to fight cancer.

it is wide. the cowboys get the ball back in position to win it. dan bailey's kick floats just in between the goal posts. the cowboys win 27-24. don't know how to feel about this one. how do you feel about this game? they played well but didn't come out with the victory. how do they feel about it? >> it wasn't as somber as you would think because they were proud of their production. consider this for a team that hasn't taken a first half lead since october 2nd, the skins lit a smark tonight. grossman had two touchdowns. it was just bad luck and a breakdown in special teams. >> nobody panicked. you know, i think we had one first down. things weren't moving very well. just a play >> we here, a player there just a little bit off.
everybody kept their poise and can want fighting. you play for those moments, you know? and it's really disappointing. we didn't get a victory. >> it is very frustrating. i don't feel any pressure out there whatsoever. i love these opportunities an -- and it's very dispinting. >> i've never been part of a losing streak like this but all we need to do is keep showing up practicing and hopefully getting a win next sunday. >> i asked some of the players, how do you move on from this? they said it's just like anything else, it hurts but they're going to play, they're just going to keep playing for each other. >> thank you. i'm surprised he spoke afterwards. >> finally the basketball team. they got blasted today in puerto rico. look at this score. 89-63. wow. blowout.
