news. weekend "gma" rancor bianna golodryga here with details. >> a big report this morning. the monthly jobs report due later this morning, is an important gauge of where the economy stands. and there is some new optimism. a survey released thursday, found hiring beat expectations in december, with 215,000 jobs created, the most in 10 months. the other encouraging sign, the number of people filing for unemployment benefits is at its lowest rate in four years. and americans continue to spend on retail goods, electronics to cars. auto companies saw their best sales in five years last month. but the big question is, was the growth just because it was the holiday season? or is this sustainable? this morning's jobs report will help answer that question. >> a real bellwether. we'll have our eyes on that. a major legal victory for google this morning, after it was accused of unfair bias in its search results. regulators have cleared the company of those claims, saying

google is not guilty of antitrust violations. it will be allowed to rank search results in ways that highlight its own services. some 70% of web searches in the u.s. go through google. and nearly two years to the day after being wounded by a gunman herself, former congresswoman gabby giffords travels to connecticut today to comfort the families of the newtown school shooting victims. earlier this week, giffords met with new york city mayor, michael bloomberg. you see a picture of it here. to discuss gun control. the children who survived the attack at sandy hook elementary, returned to class thursday without incident. on the same day, connecticut's governor ordered a review of state gun laws there. and a massive settlement from the 2010 oil spill. drilling giant, transocean, the owner of the rig that exploded, has agreed to pay a $1.4 billion fine to settle the government's claims against the company. the money will be used to fund recovery projects all along the

gulf coast. and take a look at this dramatic rescue about 200 miles off of new orleans there in the gulf. a coast guard crew plucking a sick man and his wife from their sailboat. they were heading to houston when their 64-foot boat got caught up in rough weather. and the man suffered an apparent heart attack. after being airlifted to the hospital, he is now reported to be in stable condition. this morning we're getting a very rare glimpse at the preroyal life of princess diana. photo, about to go up for auction. believed to be from a swiss ski trip in 1980. this is before diana met prince charles. it shows a 19-year-old diana lounging on a bed with a mystery young man. a bottle of whiskey within their reach. a british newspaper held on to this -- >> a full bottle of whiskey. >> a full bottle. at least it was when the picture was snapped. a british newspaper held on to

it for decades. it had the words not to be published scrawled on it. >> if they found it before the engagement was announced. nothing is known. i think it's intriguing. you can read into it whatever you want. it can be perfectly innocent. >> it's a 19-year-old on a ski trip. >> that was a fun trip. >> right. exactly. >> you know what? >> elizabeth and i are like, ponies in a field. slow-motion, with music playing. >> come on. we're going to turn to washington now and a close call for house speaker john boehner. he got re-elected yesterday. but not before some warning shots from his own party. after the close vote, boehner was emotional. >> you've come here to see your name up in the lights or to pass off a political victory as some accomplishment, you've come to the wrong place. the door's right behind you. >> and with that, let's bring in abc's jonathan karl. jon, there was unusual tension on the house floor when they were counting those votes. >> reporter: there really was, george. i was in the chamber.

i can tell you, even as they started casting ballots, boehner's own team did not know if they had the votes to win an outright majority. in the end, he lost 12 republicans. that may not sound like a lot. but it would take just 17 to keep him from getting re-elected speaker. so, he emerges as a weakened speaker. less able to make compromises with the president. as one republican put it, he was like a cemetery superintendent. he has a lot of people under him. but nobody listening. >> that's going to be tough for him as he faces the debt limit confrontation with the president at the end of february. and the president learning yesterday he's going to face that without his treasury secretary, tim geithner. we knew he was going to leave. but now, he's saying he's going to leave right after the inaugural and not be around for that confrontation. >> reporter: that's right. not a surprise he's going. but he was going to follow through the fiscal cliff debate. that's only part-over. the debt limit fight's a big one. he'll have a new treasury secretary. it will almost certainly be jack lew, his current chief of staff. a shuffling of chairs.

but this is the last of the economic team left in the white house, geithner. >> jon karl, thank you very much. looking forward to you joining our powerhouse roundtable on "this week" this sunday. senate republican leader, mitch mcconnell. now, to the growing backlash over the movie "zero dark thirty." the movie chronicles the hunt for osama bin laden. three senators, including the chair of the senate intelligence committee are now putting pressure on the cia to reveal just how much information it gave to filmmakers. and whether or not the agency deliberately tried to mislead them into thinking torture led to the finding of osama bin laden. abc's martha raddatz joins us, now, with the very latest on this story. martha? >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. this morning, the cia is looking at new investigations into information shared with the filmmakers. all of this may be good for box office sales. but right now, it has a few very powerful people on the hill outraged.

the makers of "zero dark thirty" certainly want oscar buzz. but now, the powerful film is getting more unwanted attention from lawmakers. >> when was the last time you saw bin laden? >> reporter: the similar suggests that so-called enhanced interrogation techniques on cia detainees were successful in leading them to bin laden's hideout. john mccain told cnn, the film's portrayal is misleading. >> you believe when you watch this movie that waterboarding and torture leads to information that leads them to elimination of osama bin laden. that's not the case. >> reporter: before this latest controversy, i asked the film's director about the scenes depicting waterboarding. >> i felt it was important to be accurate and be authentic. you know, granted, you know, it's not an easy subject. but it's also pretty irrefutable that that was part of this

ten-year-long hunt. >> reporter: documents already released through freedom of information requests, show cooperation with the filmmakers by the cia and pentagon. now, investigators are looking at records of those interactions to determine whether the filmmakers had any inappropriate access to sensitive information. >> i never asked for classified material. to my knowledge, i never received any. >> reporter: in a december statement to cia personnel, acting director michael morell, called the film a dramatization. saying the enhanced interrogation techniques were the key to finding bin laden. that impression was false. but he said some of the information leading to the capture came from those interrogation techniques. the filmmakers stress this is not a documentary. it's a movie. it's based on actual events. but some of them are dramatized. we're going to turn to an

alarming report about americans asleep at the wheel. the new research shows it's happening a lot more than you might think. to 1 in 24 adults. and the true numbers are likely higher because some people don't realize they're nodding off. abc's ron claiborne is here with the debates. and wake-up call really applies here. >> reporter: it does, george. it's happened to all of us at some point. we're convinced we can outrun our own fatigue and make it to our destination in our cars. but according to a new report by the cdc, many of us are fooling ourselves and dozing off on the road. look at this astonishing video. a woman asleep at the wheel. her car drifts from lane-to-lane. eventually, she woke up and stopped. but what happened to that woman happens to a lot of us. the new cdc report found that 4.2% of more than 147,000 people interviewed, acknowledged they had fallen asleep while driving in the previous month.

every year, drowsy driving is blamed for more than 60,000 accidents. >> sleep is such a powerful drive that if you really need it, the brain is going to say, aha, sleep. and that can be incredibly dangerous situation. >> reporter: researchers say tired drivers are especially susceptible to something called microsleep, where they fall asleep for just a few seconds. >> it can happen in the blink of an eye. >> reporter: to test the effects of driving without enough rest, last fall i stayed up 32 hours straight. and then, drove a minivan at a sleep research van closed track in massachusetts, while attached to a brain monitor. just 20 minutes into the experiment, i had fallen asleep and driven off the road. but the truly shocking part came later, when i was shown the results of the brian monitor. i had fallen asleep 18 times and only remembered 2 of them. the cdc report says that's not unusual. that's why the incidents of drivers falling asleep behind

the wheel is probably much higher than what they found. and the cdc says that motorists need to recognize the symptoms of drowsiness. for example, frequent blinking or yawning or drifting out of your lane. if that happens, pull over and rest. you're probably wondering, caffeine, it staves off the tiredness. but only for a while. >> don't get close to that line. now, to the highway patrol officer caught on camera, allegedly arresting people on bogus charges, including drunk driving. so many people she pulled over actually passed the breathalyzer tests. but were arrested anyway. the officer is facing a major lawsuit. and abc's john schriffen has the story. >> reporter: this dash cam video is providing ammo for attorneys this morning, firing back at a former utah highway patrol officer who they say was up to no good. >> license and insurance, please. >> reporter: at first glance, this video from 2011, appears to be a routine dui stop.

>> stand right there and face me. >> reporter: but take a closer look. >> any alcohol for you tonight? >> oh, no. >> reporter: utah highway patrol officer, has the driver perform a series of sobriety tests. >> three, four. >> down to your side. >> reporter: the lawyer says she passed all with flying colors. and yet, she was still arrested for a dui. charges later dropped after blood tests found no alcohol in her system. >> do we have a culture of corruption that occurs here? the stories are rampant. >> reporter: the officer has pulled over and arrested at least 40 others on bogus dui or other charges. this man says it happened to him, when the officer claims he was speeding. >> she said she clocked me at 73. the fastest i was going was 62. >> reporter: like the others, he was arrested for dui. and his wife in the passenger seat was forced to find her own way home. >> they dropped her off at a

burger king. >> reporter: when it was shown he was not drunk, the charge was reduced to having an open container of alcohol. he is part of a class-action lawsuit saying they knew she had lied in the past. she pulled over this man, who she tasered while still in her car. >> her award for trooper of the year should be taken away from her. >> reporter: that officer is no longer on the job. currently being investigated on unrelated issues. utah highway patrol refused to comment on this because it is pending legislation. still waiting to hear back from them. >> that's amazing footage. john, thank you. we're going to turn to a rescue story also caught on camera. two arizona teens stranded on cracking ice for hours, until they were saved by a quick-thinking friend and fast-working first responders. abc's cecilia vega has the story. >> reporter: the frozen lake was cracking by the minute.

all the two stranded boys could cling to but a dying tree and short branches. and that's where they waited to be rescued for more than four hours. >> we weren't sure what was going to happen. if we were going to fall all the way and have hyperthermia and maybe die. >> reporter: it started off as a fun walk across the lake near their arizona home. >> it looked pretty frozen. >> reporter: but when 14-year-old christian van aller and alex orton stepped on the ice, they heard cracking and rushed to the tree. >> it started really cracking maybe 20 feet back. and so, we were trying to hurry and get across. that's when it really sunk in and broke. >> reporter: each had a shoe stuck in the ice. they had to cover their freezing feet with their hats to stay warm. on shore, alex's brother called for help. but the first call wasn't to 911. it was to mom. >> i knew i was going to be in trouble when i got home. that was the main thing that was in my head. >> reporter: as rescuers raced to bring the boys to safety, temperatures dropped as night

fell. >> if they were in a different location and ice that thin, the outcome wouldn't have been so good. >> reporter: they say they learned their lesson. >> we're not going to take away the cell phone. that's the only reason they got rescued. >> x-boxes maybe. >> reporter: while they may be home safely, these boys are not quite out of the woods just yet. for "good morning america," cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. >> x-box is gone. >> say good-bye. say good night. now, switching gears to patrick dempsey, known for saving lives on "grey's anatomy." but a new role is brewing when he went up against starbucks to rescue a local coffee chain about to collapse. take a look. >> i'm not going out with you. >> reporter: on "grey's anatomy" patrick dempsey's character is used to winning hearts. ♪ >> reporter: he's also familiar

segment. we're going to go to the trial, the dramatic trial weaver been covering of the woman charged with the brutal murder of her ex-boyfriend, after he broke up with her. a shocking phone call she made the day after his body was found was revealed in court yesterday. we'll talk to dan and nancy live in a moment about the case. but first, here's abc's ryan owens with the story. >> this is detective steve flores. >> reporter: most accused killers do not reach out to the police. >> i wanted to offerny assistance that i might have. >> reporter: but jodi arias is not most accused killers. >> we dated for, like, five months. and we broke up and we continued to actually see each other. >> reporter: you're listening to a conversation between jodi and the lead detective trying to solve the murder of her ex-boyfriend, travis alexander. the conversation happened the day after his body was found in the shower of his mesa, arizona, bedroom, in june 2008. >> that was the last time you

saw him. >> right? you haven't been back in town since then? >> not at all. >> reporter: jodi admits, that was a lie. not only was she in his house that night. she killed him. she said in self-defense. ♪ o holy night >> reporter: the soft spoken woman who won the jailhouse christmas caroling competition, wiped away tears as the prosecution showed the jury photos of his body. they say she stabbed him 27 times, slit his throat and shot him in the head. the defense says that travis was a sexual deviant that controlled her. >> you remember seeing an e-mail from mr. alexander to miss arias, where he provides her a picture of the french maid outfit he would like her to don when she cleans his apartment. >> reporter: the jury got a look inside travis' washing machine, where detectives found a digital camera. on the memory card, pictures of

travis seconds before he was killed. and after the camera was dropped, a shot of jodi arias dragging his bloody body. >> a friend of ours was bed in his bedroom. >> reporter: police released 911 tape from the day travis' friends discovered his body. they already had a suspect in mind. >> he has an ex-girlfriend that's been bothering him. following him. and slashing tifrs and things like that. >> and do you know the ex-girlfriend's name? >> her name's jodi. >> reporter: for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news, phoenix. let's get more on this from our "gma" legal analyst, dan abrams. and nancy grace. nancy will be covering the trial tonight on hln. let's begin, it's hard, knowing what we know now, more damaging evidence than that phone call that jodi made. >> you're right. we are going to have more devastating evidence. the state left off with a fingerprint expert on the stand.

and what she really is a crime scene tech, to boil it down. she's going to lay out all of the physical evidence, that she is protecting the chain of custody. and she's going to give an overview of all the fingerprints they found. and when i hear that the defense is trying to bring up, he asked her to wear a french maid outfit. please. if that was a crime, about 50% of american men would be behind bars right now. so, you get the french maid outfit. and you get the crime scene photos. you know, it is laughable. i agree with you. but i've got to tell you, i've prosecuted a lot of homicides, including mass murder. and when i look at these crime scene photos, it actually made me sick to my stomach because this guy has a mother somewhere. and she is seeing pictures of her little boy, now grown, dead, slumped over in a shower. and it's disgusting. >> you see the photos. and you hear her voice calmly

lying. >> you have her on audiotape, right, first saying she wasn't there, at all. talking to the detective, trying to be helpful, supposedly. then, shortly thereafter, you have her on videotape lying in a different story. this time, saying, well, okay. i was there. but there were intruders. it's not just notes of a detective saying, here's what she said the first time. you have her on audiotape the first time, telling one story. you have her on videotape telling a different story. now, you have her lawyer in court arguing something completely different. self-defense. >> and that point that nancy brings up. her lawyer in court laying out a lot of accusations against the victim. >> they are trying to effectively put the victim on trial here. to suggest that he wrote racy e-mails, that he wrote things about her in e-mails, that means he was controlling her, and therefore, it was self-defense. that's the problem they have. so, you have these e-mails. where's the connection to self-defense?

this is, as i said from the beginning, an effort to get a lesser conviction in this case. i think the defense attorneys know she's going to get convicted. the question is, what is she going to get convicted of? >> the accused sort of playing to the jury. she's gotten quite emotional at times, as well. >> oh, please. yeah, i know. i know. this is the thing. as dan was saying, he's correct to this point. she's on audio. she's on video. that was "inside edition" or "48 hours." she comes up with a crazy story that travis alexander was attacked by people all dressed in black. that's her second story. she never cried during any of that. miss sob sister turns it on when the jury is there. i'll tell you what is getting me upset other than what this victim lives through. is that the self-defense theory and battered women zone.

i have worked with battered women. and the reality is, she is claiming that he is verbally abusive. the old adage, sticks and stones. the first time we hear physical abuse is the incident where she slashes him. a smiley face slash, from ear to ear, ironically leaving a smile as his throat is cut open. sticks and stones. it's not going to work on this jury. i'm telling you right now. >> and you said before, dan, her attorneys probably don't want her to stake the stand. but nancy has said she probably wants to, anyway. >> it depends on how serious they are about self-defense. if this is a real self-defense case. >> it better be. >> i think this is an effort to get a lesser conviction. i don't think they think there's a shot they're going to get an acquittal. this to me is to get a second-degree murder conviction. if that's the case, maybe you don't have her take the stand. >> dan abrams, nancy grace,

we're back at 7:43, with the medical mystery we've been talking about. a high school basketball star with a disease, so require that doctors don't know what causes it or how to cure it. but they know what helps, going to the tanning salon off that basketball court. linsey davis is here with more. >> reporter: josh borrelli is the golden child. the senior with the deep tan in the midst of winter. he sports a tan that is prescribed. the ultraviolet rays are so protective, he can't miss a day without tanning. without it, the disease with life-threatening complications could resurface. 19 seconds left in the game. shawnee is down by one. that's when they give it to josh borrelli. the guy on the team with the most experience at overcoming adversity. borrelli has a rare auto immune disease called mucha hagerman.

[ cheers and applause ] glad to welcome emeril back for his first visit of 2013. comfort food, you're going to give it to us today. you have to tell us about your new show on sunday, "emeril's florida." >> it's a show from the panhandle to the keys. it's not only cooking.

it's about all the great spots in florida. it's about fun eating. it's about chefs. >> all on the cking channel. and you take us to the ravenous pig. >> great place. now that we exercised, george, we can get back to this. basically, we have beautiful pork chops. we're going to season them. i use a combination of salt. there or in the bowl. it doesn't matter. cayenne, salt and chili powder. we're going to whisk that. that's the spice for the pork chops. on both sides, we're going to season that. >> before you put it in the flour. >> and then, we're going to dredge it in the flour, which is where we are now. once the pork chops, we're going to not worry about these and put them in a slow cooker. we take the pork chops after we sear them. and we're going to take onions. you can use fennel. we're going to use apples with

this. a little salt and pepper in here. we're going to caramelize this. and basically, what we're going to do, is once the onions come out, we're going to add a little flour to that. and slowly, start making this little sauce, with chicken broth. so, we make a rue, with the onion leftover. and then, basically, what we're going to do is we're going to take this now, and add this right to the slow cooker. yeah? >> that's the onions, caramelized. >> after the onions get caramelized, we're going to add the onions to this. and we're going to add bay leaves, salt and pepper. and i use fennel seed, as well. >> how long does that stay in there? >> we do it on a slow cook for four hours. >> just leave it. >> about 45 minutes and it's done. 45 minutes after that, then, we add apples to this. i used some granny smith apples.

this is sort of what the dish looks like after that. now -- >> oh, my gosh. >> yeah. now, the slow cooker works great. we take it out of the slow cooker. look at that. it's falling right off the bone. >> wow. >> i'll take that. >> you take that. >> i'll take that one. >> and here you go. >> thank you. you have some chicken and dumplings, too. >> we have a lucky audience member. how is the soup? >> it's delicious. it's amazing. >> is it good? >> it's really good. the dumplings are in the soup? >> we make the dumpling mixture. basically flour. and what we do is cut them. >> yeah. >> we have to try this here. >> i will. >> after you cook the chicken, yeah. after you cook the chicken, then, we have the broth. and we shred the chicken. then, peas, carrots, celery, onions. >> and that's the favorite part.
