loans arena, they call it the "q" in cleveland. in just minutes, donald trump will bulldoze through tradition one more time. making the first primetime speech at his own convention. i'm here with our team of political analysts right here. strategists from both parties. our reporters tracking all security issues surrounding the event. and matthew dowd, looks like a normal convention. but this is no ordinary convention, no ordinary time. >> i don't think you can underestimate what's going on in the country, and with the republican party. we have immense social, cultural, and political

and a billionaire is taking over a party and the establishment. >> and martha raddatz, it comes against the backdrop of so much turmoil around the world. and the theme tonight, make america safe again. >> people are scared. you look at nice, paris, and san bernardino. and donald trump is talking right to these fears. donald trump, they say, will make america safe. he says waterboarding, bomb isis. these are complex problems, he doesn't have detailed plans, but this is what he's saying. >> and david muir, one of the never trump

trouble. >> some real tense moments to start the convention. there are still real divisions on full view. the never trump faction, the stop trump faction, they've been in existence since trump started to gain steam. trying to force a roll call vote on the rules, but the ayes prevailed. you heard chants of shame, shame, shame, and trump supporters chanting trump, trump, usa. but there's a real energy inside the room, expecting donald trump, melania trump, and the only question, will his introduction be longer than melania trump's speech? >> and one of the big storylines tonight, jonathan karl, you see the energy on the floor, but those republicans that are

here. the last two nominees, not here. the last two republican presidents, not here. >> you see bob dole, the only surviving previous nominee that is here. no bush, the first republican national convention in 40 years without a bush. and 21 republican senators not here. one of them said he had to mow his lawn. and the biggest absence, the sitting governor of the state, john kasich, the most popular republican in the state of ohio, not here. >> he ran against donald trump for an awful long time. and trump's campaign manager calling him out on it today. >> calling him petulant, embarrassing the republican party, but he's in the city of cleveland, but not wki

>> also in the city of cleveland, a lot of protesters. and police are geared up for it. let's go to linsey davis, where the protesters are gathered. so far, they're here, but fairly quiet? >> relatively quiet. but the protest groups that said they were going to be, are here. pro-trump, anti-trump, black lives matter. they're here, and so far, so good. the most recent brief from the cleveland police chief, he said, listen, we're still prepared for anything. still prepared for everything. just one arrest today, one arrest yesterday. but still, a lot more people, certainly we have a lot of police presence. i'm just noticing some police have gathered in this corner

you can see them here, they're everywhere. >> and we see rudy giuliani on the podium. he's riling up the crowd as well, as we wait for donald trump. this convention, just a little bit behind schedule. i want to go with tom llamas, who has been with mr. trump since the beginning of the campaign. he'll be out in just a few minutes. perhaps to give a brief introduction to his wife, perhaps to go on. >> this is right. i've never heard donald trump give a brief speech, even on saturday, introducing governor mike pence, he spoke for nearly 30 minutes. he said tonight would be a brief speech, and melania trump is ske scheduled to speak for about five

always forceful, reminding voters about how strong her husband is. but trump the husband, the father, they want voters to get a better understanding of who trump the man is. we may hear that tonight. sources say she has practiced this speech with the same kind of teleprompter she will have tonight. >> and cokie roberts, she will be the first foreign-born first lady if trump is elected since m mrs. adams. >> yes, but the wife traditionally does give sort of a character reference. this is somebody i love, and you can

but talking about no ordinary time, that was eleanor rooseve t roosevelt, at the end of the depression, the eve of world war ii. this was also a time when people are feeling unordinary. and the republican party has gone through lots of upheaval, and the trump family are really the only stars of this convention. >> and i want to go back to terry moran. that demonstration earlier today, did really unleash some feelings on that floor. >> and the feelings have been unsettled. we live in unsettled times, certainly. and you get a sense, this is not a contested convention, but it remains a divided one. and donald trump is a candida

people, drawn protesters. behind me, this is the trump box. mike pence, the vice presidential nominee. just behind them, a single protester tried to raise a pink banner. she stood up, an amazing security breach, essentially the enemy getting into the republican convention. a little bit of pulling or yanking, no violence, nothing thuggish or anything like that. but it was the kind of unsettled emotions that donald trump has sparked in many people around the country. and as i say, a security breach. and the whole sense here tonight, many of the speeches from the podium, we've heard a grieving mother of one of the dead from the benghazi attacks. a blow-by-blow description of killing people on the

podium, and it's that kind of emotion that one feels here. >> i want to go to kristen soltis anderson, we saw mike pence, the vice presidential candidate. that was one step he took to unify this party coming into the convention. but he still has a way to go. >> he certainly does. a lot of republican still have questions about donald trump. is he going to represent their values? but we're not seeing a lot of republican saying they'll vote for hillary clinton. republican still may not quite be sure that donald trump is representing their values fully, but they're not breaking away to vote for other candidates. >> you're there with donna brazile as well, democratic stra

stream of press releases, but hillary clinton is running closer to donald trump than a lot of democrats expected. >> it's been a very difficult two weeks for hillary clinton, but she's not just competitive. i think hillary clinton has the ability to expand her vote, reach the voters with a common sense message of things that she will do to help the economy, and keep america safe. today, no policy proposals, no plan. and we're hearing it here, from the former mayor of new york city, who believes that the only way to bring america together is by dividing each other. so, we have a long way to go. >> matthew dowd, what does d donald trump

to become a nuclear power, and is putting billions of dollars back into a country that is the world's largest supporter of terrorism. we're helping fund the terrorists. we're giving them the money. are we crazy? donald trump will make sure that any agreement with iran meets the original goals of the u.n. and our allies. a nonnuclear iran. hillary clinton will be a third term. with the same foreign policy, particularly on iran. but we should mention, you're going to hear from melania trump tonight. this is going to be a trump family affair this week. six members of the trump family will be speaking on that stage, and as you mentioned earlier, some noticeable people missing. the bush family, mccains, romneys. and ivanka trump made the point, when asked, how do you feel about the romneys, bushes, and mccains not being here. she said, it's their choice. but if they don't want to be a part of a forward-thinking moment for the republican party, it's their choice. >> and there are voters that voted for donald trump say they don't like the republican establishment. and they thought their party leaders had abandoned them.

so, they have no interest in seeing the bushes and romneys here. these are people that have rejected that republican party. >> and that goes to the point that you, matthew dowd, were making. no matter what happens for donald trump, it's a brand new day for the republican party. >> it's a fundamental change for the two-party system. the republican party has been taken over by an outsider. and that changes how you conduct a campaign. donald trump hasn't run television ads, but he's gotten more votes than anybody else, and has beaten 16 other candidates. >> chris christie there, came close to getting the vice presidential nod. let's go back to the podium. >> usa!

you know donald trump will secure our borders. his opponent has had her chance to do it, and has failed. hillary clinton for open borders. [ booing ] she's in favor of even taking syrian refugees, even though the islamic state has told us, they're going to put their operatives with the syrian r refugees to come here and kill us. they've told us that, and she still wants to take in these syrians. we can't afford to repeat the mistakes of the past. [ applause ] hillary clinton's experience is the basis for her campaign.

even his advisors admit, they're an amazing testament to who he is as a man and a father. ways. everyone wants change. donald is the only one that can deliver it. we should not be satisfied with stagnation. donald wants prosperity for all americans. [ cheers and applause ] we need new programs to help the poor, and opportunities to challenge the young. there has to be a plan for growth, only then will it result. my husband's experience exemplifies growth, and successful passage of opportunity to the next generation. his success indicates inclusion rather than division. my husband offers a new direction. welcoming change. prosperity, and greater cooperation among peoples and nations. dold

back live in cleveland. here again is george stephanopoulos. >> and still on the podium, general michael flynn. i want to go back to david muir on the floor, it does seem as we see scott walker and the rest of the crowd out there. it does seem, after they saw melania trump, a lot of the delegates wanted to go home, or at least go out and party. >> no question. the people out here are listening to general flynn, but this is night number one in primetime. melania trump, the moment she walked off the stage, you begin to see the people moving out, and many of them leaving. it's interesting to think about where the nation is, the last couple of weeks, the
