this house and dragging some of the overhead wires with it. now, the cleanup continued overnight in neighborhoods here on the north shore. crews cleaned debris and tree limbs from the roads while suffolk county police directed traffic at intersections where the traffic signals didn't work because of those power outages. around this time yesterday morning, people who lived here in suffolk county woke up to the sounds of gusty winds and trees snapping in their neighborhoods. tens of thousands of people, pse&g long island customers lost power after powerful winds knocked down the power lines and trees in their neighborhoods. again, at last check, about 950 customers are still waiting to get power that is down from nearly 60 to 80,000 yesterday. now, the rivero owe pse&g starting at 8:00 this morning. they're offering ice water and charging stations for folks. back to you. >> sheldon, thank you very much.

mayor de blasio is calling for citywide inspections of cooling towers after a deadly outbreak of legionnaires' disease, an outbreak in the south bronx has killed 7 people and sickened 86. the cooling towers that tested positive for the bacteria have been thoroughly disinfected. >> we have a high degree of confidence that we have successfully identified and contamination. >> right now, the city has no system to inspect the water cooling system but the mayor says that will change. lawmakers are rushing to draft new measures to set inspection standards. the new york city department of education has a new plan to keep teachers and administrators from cheating. the department is forming a task force. it's going to review test scores and other data from every school and then look for anything out of the ordinary. it comes weeks after the principal of dewey high school in brooklyn was fired for allegedly fixing grades. the new task force will reportedly cost about $5 million

a year. news 4 got an exclusive look at how the city is encouraging parents to get more involved in their children's education. going door to door visiting the homes involved in the lowest performing schools. the de blasio administration tells news 4 that too many parents are not taking an active role in their children's's education. it shows students with involved parents get higher grades and are more likely to graduate. >> i don't think you can underestimate the power that parents have to push teachers to do more with their kids. >> the program's goal is to reach out to 40,000 parents before the new school year begins. it's so important. public school teachers who say that one of their biggest frustrations is when they have parent-teacher night sitting there and a lot of parents not attending. hopefully you can get more parents to collaborate with the teachers. it's better for the kids. >> we want to take a check of weather and traffic.

apartment saw this man on her fire escape, he quickly fled. at least three of these incidents happened on west 49th street here in hell's kitchen. the m.o. of the suspect is the same each time. he goes into apartments, takes electronics and jewelry and a couple of instances on 10th credit card. as we've been saying, not a big description from police on this so far in terms of the suspect, but, again, that video pretty clear, darlene. you can see it on our website, nbcnewyork.com. we did see at least one cop car patrolling this area. but so far, no word yet on if they're stepping up their efforts as a result of the spree. back to you. >> all right, tracie strahan. thank you. in the bronx, a home invasion with a 68-year-old woman in riverdale. these three men forced their way in when a home health aide opened the door. the victim had $50,000 in a safe. the men got it all, apparently. they also hit the victim and then locked her in the closet. also in the bronx, police

have a good look at a man who they say tried to rape an employee at a clothing store. suspect looks like a regular customer. you see on the video. apparently browsing in the store in the south bronx. police say shortly after this he attacked the victim. this happened saturday afternoon. she fought him off and he ran away. despite the recent shootings in brooklyn, mayor de blasio and police commissioner bill bratton are spreading a message that crime across the city is actually down. last night they held a national night out. an anti-crime event. it is a night of fun where officers play games with the community. people in the otmmunity. it followed a weekend of shootings, though, that injured inmore than a dozen victims. but last night the mayor insisted the city is becoming safer. >> summer all-out is working in the areas where we've applied additional officers, it's having a very big effect. the new technology is working. more and more the new training is working. as you know, additional officers are on their way.

and the way he seems to be getting in and out of the apartments, trace. >> reporter: yeah, the fire escapes are key in this one, michael. he's struck six times since february. this alleged suspect may have met his match last month when he was finally caught on tape. take a look for yourself. this is a video we put on our website, nbcnewyork.com. you certainly cannot miss him. he's seen on a fire escape here in hell's kitchen crouching down and looking directly into a security camera just a few weeks ago. when the woman inside saw that man on her fire escape, he fled. at least three of the incidents linked to this same suspect happened on west 49th street and each time he's made off with electronics and jewelry after entering that apartment. but during two of the burglaries and buildings on 10th avenue, he stole money and april credit card. again, you can see that video on nbcnewyork.com. over the phone this morning, police told me that that suspect did strike right in this area where we're near roosevelt

hospital and he seems to be brazen in all of this, michael. all of the incidents happened within april few blocks of each other. back to you. >> be careful. trace, thanks very much. both sides of the new jersey turnpike are open following a deadly truck fire that brought traffic to a standstill for hours. police say a driver was killed when his dump truck overturned and burst into flames. that was about 11:00 yesterday morning. this was in the southbound lanes under the wood avenue overpass. this was the result. traffic backed up for miles. commuters, some of them got out and they actually skateboarded, threw footballs. they did anything to pass the time. even hang out. >> already been a long day for me. that's why i want to go home. i started since, what, 4:30. >> tough for a lot of people. there's no word yet as to what caused that crash. today is a good day for citi bike, the bike sharing program.

debris from the road while suffolk county police directed traffic in some of the areas where the intersections and those traffic signals did not work. around this time yesterday morning, people in suffolk county woke up to the sound that of gusty wind. they heard some of those trees snapping in their neighborhood because of that storm. now, after that storm moved through, it knocked down trees. it brought down power lines. knocked out power to tens of thousands of people across suffolk county. at last check, pse&g long island tells us that approximately 14,000 people waking up this morning, they won't have power. darlene, the utility tells us that their offices in coreham and river head will be offering charging stations, ice and water starting at 8:00 a.m. this morning. >> sheldon, thank you very much. police have a suspect in brooklyn's tragic drive-by shooting and they hope that you recognize him. he's 19-year-old frederick marquis. police say he's a gunman who shot five people monday night at

the red hook houses. one was a pregnant woman. she lost her baby. marquis and his get away driver still on the loose. police are investigating whether it's gang-related. it's 5:37. anyone caught flying drones too close to airports in queens can expect to be caught and punished. it comes as drones are spotted too close to planes around kennedy airport. the da of queens is working with officials to enforce all laws for unmanned aircraft. comedian louis c.k. made a surprise appearance at a board meeting yesterday. he shadowed mayor de blasio for much of the day. the mayor and the comedian teamed up before at the city's annual political roast known as the inner circle dinner. one local lawmaker keeping up the fight against replacing alexander hamilton with a yet unnamed woman on the $10 bill.

jet. but they don't expect the piece to solve mystery of why that jet crashed. the man accused of murdering a memphis, tennessee, officer will go before a judge today. tremendous main wilborn turned himself on monday following a manhunt. he shot the officer during a routine traffic stop on saturday night. he believed bolton interrupted up a drug deal. the funeral for the officer is expected for tomorrow. the guy who led the minnesota dentist on the hunt that killed cecil the lion is due in court in zimbabwe. he's pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to prevent an illegal hunt and insists that he did nothing wrong. meanwhile, the man who killed cecil continues to stay out of the public eye. but one of his vacation homes in florida was found vandalized with the words lion killer spray painted on a garage door. it's 5:49. there's a major clue on the

teens who went missing during a fishing trip has vanished. the boat used by the two 14-year-olds has disappeared. you'll remember, it was recovered off the coast of south florida on july 26th, two days after the boys were last seen. but the coast guard says the boat that had capsized was never secured. so it was gone when another crew went out to get it just 12 hours later. shoppers in texas were in for a scare when an suv came crashing into the aisles. here's surveillance video of that from the goodwill store in houston. police say that suv barreled through a large plate glass window before slamming into the clothing section. four people were taken to the hospital with injuries. the driver faces charges and there's no word yet as to what caused that crash. from brooklyn now, we're getting an amazing look at the moment that giant sinkhole opened up. look at that. it was yesterday morning. it swallowed part of the intersection at 5th avenue and

64th street in sunset park. luckily, no one was hurt. now, the city admits it could take days to fix that giant hole. in manhattan, it wasn't a hole but a hive that stopped traffic. a beekeeper had to come in to remove bees that swarmed a bike that was chained up. this happened in midtown and west 56th street and 7th avenue. a little alarming. it's not clear where the bees came from, but it's likely a hive is somewhere nearby. every once in a while in manhattan, we see this sort of scene where the beekeeper needs to come in and take care of things. >> oh, my. they're designer bees because it's midtown manhattan. >> they're wearing prada. it was an historic concert. billy joel closing down nassau coliseum and we'll tell you the song he picked to send off the arena. a curious cub in need of some help. how workers freed this black bear. follow us on facebook and

dump truck overturned and burst into flames 11:00 yesterday morning. this happened in the southbound lanes under the wood avenue overpass in linden. traffic was backed up for miles. commuters tried to make the best of it. they got out of their cars to take the sun in some cases, some even skateboarded, others tossed around a football. >> already been a long day for me. that's why i want to go home. i started since, what, 4:30. that crash. police are looking for a suspect in the drive-by they want your help. they released this photo of 19-year-old frederick marquis. he sprayed bullets into a crowd at the red hook houses. five people were shot. baby. marquis and his get away driver are still on the loose. despite the recent shootings in brooklyn, mayor de blasio and police commissioner bratton are saying crime is down. they held an anti-crime event.

the outbreak in the south bronx has killed seven people. it has sickened 86 others. health officials say the cooling towers that tested positive for the bacteria have been thoroughly disinfected. right now, the city has no system to inspect the water cooling system. the mayor says that will change and they're rushing to draft new standards. later this morning, president obama will make a in congress. he will speak at the american university where president kennedy defended nuclear disarmament and cold war dip lope si. barack obama got bad news from our area. there are two who cannot support the deal. the fbi is zeroing in on hillary clinton's e-mails. agents are looking to see how secure her own personal server was. that's where clinton admits she

welcome back. 6:22. beautiful new york city there. it was a day one port authority police officer will never forget. he helped deliver a baby on the path train station concourse. officer brian mcgraw responded to a call of a woman in labor at the world trade center station at 2:30 yesterday morning. the woman, her husband and their to the hospital. she felt that baby coming, though. mcgraw, who used to work as an emt examined the woman and cleared the area. within minutes, she gave birth to a healthy 6-pound baby girl. >> they were happy. they were thankful. >> what did they say? >> thank you so much. i'm glad you were there. >> yeah, absolutely. it's the second child that he has helped deliver. >> i love the picture. that's the cutest ever. good job.

this morning as the cleanup and the restoration of power begins there. sheldon? >> reporter: michael, yes. crews have made a little bit of progress from yesterday afternoon to now. right now, about 14,000 people do not have power. that's down from the tens of thousands who had power knocked out yesterday afternoon after that storm moved in causing damage like the ones we're seeing here on this block here on gnarled hollow road. you can see where this utility pole is leaning towards the road and bringing down some of the overhead wires with it. now, the cleanup continued overnight and neighborhoods a lodge the north shore. crews cleared debris and the tree limbs from the roads while suffolk county police directed traffic at intersections where the traffic signals didn't work because of the power outage. they woke up to the sounds of gusty winds and trees snapping in front of their yards. now, tens of thousands of pse&g long island customers lost power as a result of the powerful

winds that knocked down power lines and knocked down trees in their neighborhood. yet about 14,000 people waking up this morning without any power because of the outages. but that is down. michael, the utility has their offices in river head and core um starting at 8:00 this morning. >> sheldon, hopefully get them for a couple hours today. thanks very much. police will looking for a man who tried to rape a clothing store clerk in the bronx. surveillance video shows the suspect walking around the store in bronx saturday afternoon. police say after a few minutes he attacked a 41-year-old worker. she fought him off and the suspect ran away. also in the bronx, police released this surveillance video showing three men wanted for a home invasion in riverdale. they allegedly forced their way into the home of a 68-year-old woman when a home health aide opened the door. the men assaulted the woman and forced her to open a safe.

right now thousands of people without power in suffolk county as crews work to remove downed trees and power lines. >> sheldon dutes is there with more. >> reporter: crews from long island and pse&g and new jersey and con ed will be coming together to restore power to neighborhoods like this one where damage brought down utility poles like this one, bringing wires dangerously close to the road. that cleanup continued overnight. neighborhoods along the north shore, crews cleared debris and

tree limbs from the roads while suffolk county police directed traffic at some of the intersections where the stoplights aren't working. at last check, approximately 14,000 customers across long island did not have power that is down from the tens of thousands of customers did not have power yesterday. now to tracie strahan where a cat burglar is breaking into apartments. tase ee. >> reporter: he's caught on tape. police are linking the same suspect to the same different burglary since february. he was caught on tape here. you can't miss him. crouching down and looking into a security camera on a fire escape. this video was captured in an incident a few weeks ago. authorities say at least three of the burglaries happened on west 49th street. the same suspect's m.o. at the same time entering apartments and making off with electronics and jewelry and money and a credit card. he hit two apartments on tenth avenue. police are asking for help to find him.
