"today in new york" starts now. good morning, everybody. 5:00 a.m. on this wednesday, august 10. >> rafael miranda in weather world today. humidity has skyrocketed. it's very muggy and we're tracking some showers. very light stuff moving through suffolk county. for most of us it's a dry start, but it may not stay that way. and humidity really jumped up. temperatures still in the mid-70s. up to 76 in central park. winds are light and will shift to the south.

before midnight. i'll show you video of the police activity that remains here at the scene hours afterwards. police going in and out of the holy ghost tabernacle ministries. a man shot in the heard, other victims 16 and 12 years old. we're hearing those young girls are now recovering from those injuries, but there is still a very large police scene as they collect evidence here. as we bring you back live, you can also see really still roped off by police tape, they're not letting any traffic down here as the investigation continues. michael, back to you. happening right now, three firefighters who battled this inferno in the bronx are in the hospital this morning. the blaze nearly cost them their lives. katherine creag is at the hospital with how they're doing this morning. >> reporter: they are in critical but stable condition

fire commissioner, so many people have been here at jacobi medical checking on those three firefighters who remain hospitalized. and as you said, this was a big fire. it destroyed or severely damaged five houses on east 235th street. one of the injured firefighters, we saw him being rushed to an ambulance and we've learned the fire was caused by children playing with a hot steve. the three firemen, 51-year-old joseph brady suffered a heart attack, there is another one, he nearly lost his arm. 34-year-old firefighter patrick morello was diagnosed with heat stroke. he cut a hole in the roof, but when he came down from the roof, he collapsed outside. >> the conditions these firefighters work under are extremely difficult and extremely life threatening. but they do a good job. today it caught you up with us.

in suffolk county, crews will spray for mosquitos by ground and by air starting at 7:00 tonight. neighbors are encouraged to stay inside until the spraying is over. and water conservation in effect in westchester county because of malfunctioning water pumps. some people not allowed to use lawn sprinklers or to w cars until further notice. and new york city will be under a heat advisory today for hours. the advisory starts at 2:00 p.m., could be extended through the weekend. with the humidity, it will feel like temperatures are in the triple digits. and the time is 5:14, time for a check of your forecast. yeah, that heat advisory expected to last for days. and it will get hotter day by day. this is just day one. it will be a rough ride.

even rain to prove it, light showers across suffolk county and temperatures are very warm. already in the mid-70s. 76 in central park. winds are light and overcast skies. the temperatures don't look all that bad, but they feel bad because of the high humidity. 85 feels more like 95. and we are tracking scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day today p so do grab your umbrella as you're heading out. this is just the we'll take a look at the ten day in a few. it if you commute via the southern state parkway eastbound right now out by fletcher avenue which is exit 14, there is a bus that actually struck the overpass over there. so delays are building. we'll continue to keep you updated. you can see a delay already. also headed out to the van wyck

new this morning, police are investigating the shooting in jersey city that sent three people to the hospital and we're hearing two of the victims may be young students. traie strahan is in jersey city. >> reporter: officers just reopened this stretch, but they are standing guard in front of the church where we're hearing the shots rang out just before midnight. we'll detectives going in and out of holy ghost tabernacle ministries. the youngest shot was possibly 12 years old. we're hearing that she was grazed in the face. a 16-year-old wounded in the back of the head. and we're working to confirm reports that a man was shot here. the circumstances are still unclear, but again this stretch now reopened to traffic as

back to you. right now three firefighters recovering from this fast moving fire that nearly cost them their lives. flames tearing through buildings in the wakefield section of the bronx yesterday. we now know how it all started. katherine creag is at jacobi medical center and the situation got very serious very fast for these three firefighters. >> reporter: and just hearing about the injuries for the firefighters, fel one firefighter suffered a heart attack, another one had nearly a severed arm. as for the three firefighters, they remain here at jacobi medical and this was a difficult blaze to fight. it sgoied or nearly damaged five houses on east 235th street. one of the injured firemen we saw him being rushed to an ambulance and we've learned the fire was caused by children playing with a hot stove. the three fire men, 51-year-old

attack. 44-year-old sean o'rourke was hurt in a fire truck crash. 34 patrick morello was diagnosed with heat stroke. he cut a hole in the roof to keep the tire from spreading, but when he came down, he collapsed in front of paramedics. >> doctors first of all had to bring the body temperature down. the man's temperature was extremely high. >> reporter: again five houses. and there are at least eight families getting help from the red cross. there was also another fire map, a fourth one who suffered burns. he was treated and released. but we've been late hearing from the fire chief saying this was a tough day for the fire department. and police are investigating a string of muggings at a popular park in the sunny side

on alert and some of the storms could be strong, maybe heavy downpours and that will continue tomorrow and really for the next several days. we do need the rain, though, so hopefully we get a good soaking in some spots. but you can see in the 10 day forecast, it's unsettled and temperatures getting hotter day by day, into the 90s by friday, 94 on saturday. there. southern state parkway where eastbound, there is a bus that struck an overpass there, so we're actually seeing slight westbound delay, eastbound still getting by the right lane blocked here, but we'll continue to keep you posted on that. then heading over to the van wyck expressway, you will see delays northbound here and this is because of an accident on the ramp to the grand central parkway. and in addition to that there is also an unauthorized tractor trailer on that ramp. so it's a slow ride through here. and then not that far away

baltimore officer acquitted in the death of freddie gray may soon receive a six figure sum in back pay paying the board of estimates will consider paying nearly $127,000 to lieutenant brian rice, it represents the a salary he would have earned from may 2015 to july 2016. rice was found not guilty on several charges stemming from gray's death. a new born in texas has died because doctors in harris county say the baby girl died shortly after she was born with birth defects a few weeks ago. the girl's mother was in el salvador while pregnant where doctors believe she became inspected with xi characterization this is the first zika related death in texas and there is no evidence that mosquitos there are transmitting the violence. so long island, scare at a snoop dogg concert when teens started passing out from possible alcohol poisoning.
