you. not only a new toy for us at the weather center and how it will help you at home and give you information that you need to know. it's a unique thing. it's exciting. we'll talk more about that through the morning. weather not all that exciting. 74 in jersey city. tenafly, 69. in the city, 75 degrees. a lot of 60s. a fairly comfortable morning. a mix of sun and clos 83 by lunch time. upper 80s by the end of the day. let's see where the trouble spots are on this friday morning. here's lauren. >> we have a trouble spot out there. heading over to the long island expressway in queens, all lanes are shut down with an accident in the westbound lanes between maurice avenue and the bqe. heading in closer here. i turned off the traffic flow so you can see the roads. you'll have to get off at the maurice avenue exit and take the service road towards the become
this accident and avoid it. don't go to side streets, take the l.i.e. happening now, firefighters still on the scene of a staten island fire that injured more than 20 people, damaged several homes, tracie strahan is at the scene with the latest. when you see this video, you can't believe how quickly this fire spread and how serious it was. >> reporter: it did take time to get things under we want to show you the aftermath of all of this on benzinger avenue. these homes charred by flames. a couple collapsed. as officials try to pinpoint all this, they may be looking at the home with the heaviest damage. this fire burned from one home to the next burning seven of them. two of those homes collapsed.
flames so intense it burnt the siding on several homes. >> i keep thanking god that everyone is okay. >> reporter: fire marshals will return to the scene, but records on the city's building department website shows an active complaint against one of the homes saying it didn't have a permit for being performed on the second floor. it even said in the complaint if they continue, the crew could electrocute themselves and they deemed this site to be unsafe. 21 people were injured as a result. everyone expected to be okay. that also included 19 firefighters, because of the intense heat outside and what they were up against, they were heat related injuries. back to you. >> you can see how that would happen. thank you very much. police have just released video of a plan wanted for

his passport back and his part in this case will be considered closed. not the case for ryan lochte, negative sentiment here in the united states is growing. look at what we just saw on the cover of the "new york post." liar liar speedo on fire. rather than being the victims, it was ryan lochte and three other teammates that were actually the ones causing trouble on the night they claimed they were robbed at gun point. the pol c accounts and surveillance video confirmed the four vandalized a bathroom at the gas station. the athletes told officials and media outlets including the "today" show that they were robbed at gun point and had their wallets stolen. as they returned to the olympic village, close to three hours later than they claimed, surveillance video shows them pulling out their wallets to
yesterday the u.s. eoc said they stopped at a gas station where one of the athletes committed an act of vandalism. an argument ensued between the athletes and two armed security gas station security staff who displayed their weapons ord othered the athletes from their vehicle and demanded the athletes to pay the money. once the security officials received money, the athletes were allowed to leave. the behavior of these athletes is not acceptable. we apologize to other hosts in rio and the people of brazil. the four paid $50 to the guards before they left. the rio police chief said he will look in as to guards overstepped their bounds, but the fbi is looking at this investigation as well. as far as the charges go the three swimmers now could face charges of false testimony and vandalism, those charges face up to six months in jail. >> all right, kerry barrett, thank you. today in rio the u.s. and spain mix it up in the men's basketball semifinals. >> and usain bolt looks for his

time for weather and traffic on the 4s we had an accident on the long island expressway shutting down all lanes westbound in queens. we do have some lanes getting by now. here's a live look at that area. earlier this was all stopped. you'll have to take the service road around it. that's great news for queens commuters. heading over to hamilton avenue, this is an overturned truck southbound, bin at least if you're coming out of the battery tunnel, you need to get on the bqe, that's fine. the ramp getting on to it. the best news for ferry commuters, seastreak we had service changes all week long. everything is expected to be on its regular route and schedule. if you're taking the ferries, you're in for a nice ride. back to you. >> thank you very much. we have some exciting news. there's a new force, a new member on storm team 4. >> it's storm ranger 4.
there in jacob reese park. it's a doppler radar on wheels. it gives us unprecedented access to any storm. >> no one in the broadcast business has anything like this. chris shows us what it can do. >> storm ranger 4 is not just a truck, it's next generation weather technology. we built it and no one else has it we can drive it anywhere to get closer to the storm and give you a closer look at what's coming. if there's weather, you may see storm neighborhood. here in the studio we'll show you what it's seeing. it's marked by that red radar sweep. the reach is 75 miles all around wherever we take it. now traditional radars, again, beam way into the upper levels of the atmosphere. storm ranger 4's radar beams into the lower levels of the atmosphere, about 4,000 feet. this is the part of the atmosphere where most of the unstable and severe weather can take place.
close to the ground. with the predictions pinpointing the downpours and flash flooding or the rain/snow line. up until now we've been depending on a handful of radars. you can see them on this map. storm radar 4 will compliment the coverage. let's say we want to send storm range 4er to rye. it will not only help us get important information about weather in rye but what's communities, like yonkers, tenafly. this thick red line is 30 miles out. this is just the beginning for storm ranger 4. a first of its kind here in new york and everywhere. we'll be sending it all across our area in collaboration with telemundo 47. right now there's a live look at storm ranger 4 out at jacob reese park in the rockaways. there's not a lot of weather

"today in new york's" tracie strahan is in st. george where firefighters are still on the scene. >> not only are those
to restore power. at one point they had to cut power to 400 customers in the area. we'll show you the reason why. look at the damage as a result of last night's six alarm fire that left about 42 people homeless. we will show you video now that was into our newsroom showing those searing flames that engulfed seven homes on benzinger avenue. you can see the firefighters trying to make their way into erupted on the second floor. at one point this area covered in smoke because this fire started in a multi family home and quickly spread down the block. a total of seven homes either damaged or destroyed. this morning two of them are in jeopardy of collapsing leaving neighbors to scramble to safety. >> when it was smoke at the house down the street, i saw it. it -- i said smoke. then my cousin, like, ran up to
down. >> the 21 people injured, 19 of them were firefighters who suffered some sort of heat exhaustion. of course fire marshals will return to the scene later today to pinpoint a cause of the fire. but we did do some digging, we looked at the department of buildings records, it showed one of the homes had active complaints against them. one had wasn't fit for construction. back to you. >> tracie strahan, thank you. police are trying to find two armed robbers who got trapped inside a cell phone store in paterson. they eventually escaped after a slow emergency response. surveillance video shows the men with guns approaching store manager tommy torres wednesday afternoon. torres told them to take what they wanted. he left through a back door that

service to and from hoboken, today everything is back on track and in the water. more weather and traffic on the 4s. 5:36 now. police are searching for the attacker who assaulted a teen in queens. jen maxfield is in astoria with what happened. it's always shocking that something like this happens over a few dollars. just a terrible crime over a few dollars. >> that's right. the victim in this case is just 14 years old. w man who wanted to rob him. the assault happened on july 26th. the nypd just got this surveillance video from an auto repair shop it shows the man who police say sucker punched this boy and stole $7 from him and his iphone 4 before he ran away on 44th street. the boy was shaken up by not seriously hurt. this is a busy intersection
there are two gas stations here. the robbery happened 8:00 in the morning on a tuesday, the suspect did get away, with this surveillance video just being released, police are hoping it will lead them to the attacker who sucker punched a 14-year-old boy. that's the latest live ins a torya, now back to you. new developments in the u.s. swimmer scandal. about a half hour ago we learned one of the four athletes just made a deal with authorities in "today in new york's" kerry barrett is in the newsroom with details. details just coming in recently. >> jimmy feigen gave a statement to a judge in rio and agreed to pay $10,000 to a brazilian charity. once that goes through, he will get his passport back and the case against him will be closed. police say it was fagan, ryan lochte and two other swims who
at gun point. there were questions about that story from the start. inconsistencies in the claims between even the four of them. then surveillance video that seemed to paint a different picture of how that whole thing went down that night. now rio police say the four stopped at a gas station and they vandalized the bathroom. they damaged a door, broke a mirror, a soap dispenser, and security guards at the gas station demanded they pay for the damages before they left. the gun. they said they were scared because the athletes were drunk, aggressive and angry. the swimmers paid the security guards $50s before they left. the "new york post" shows the growing sentiment at home as the u.s. oec issued a statement to clarify. it reads in part, they stopped at a gas station where one of the athletes committed an act of vandalism. an argument ensued between the athletes and two armed security

video shows the blades of the engine fan peeled back at the corners. the carrier issued a statement saying all 292 passengers and 14 crew on board made it back safely. people around the word have been reacting to this. a little boy who survived an air strike has become the symbol of the destruction seen across syria. video showing little omran daqneesh is being shared throughout social media. he is seen ambulance covered in blood. the boy was pulled out of the rubble of a building hit bay syrian government or russian air strike on the rebel held city of aleppo. we're hearing his parents and three siblings did survive. in new jersey, high school students will be heading back to school with life saving training under their belt. dozens of students spent a week training for an emergency. it includes what to do during an explosion and fire or a shooting with mass casualties. the students also trained on

later, we're still not allowed anywhere near the destruction that remains here. two of the homes collapsed, you can see two of them in imminent danger. as they try to figure out what sparked this, they may be focusing on one home in particular that suffered heavy damage. we'll show you video into our newsroom of the raging flames that engulfed one home on benzinger avenue around 6:00 last night. then jumped from home to home burning 7 in total. two it took 250 firefighters to try to get the upper hand on things. a fire so intense that it burned the siding off of homes across the street. it sent residents in the area scrambling. >> i was standing on my porch. i ran downstairs. i was standing on my porch and i felt the heat from the fire. i'm so thankful, i'm thanking god that everyone is okay. >> fire marshals will return to
building department website shows an active complaint open against one of the homes in the neighborhood saying it did not have a permit for electrical wiring being performed on the second floor. we can see the fire officials that remain here. just had a shift change. they're still protecting this area. right now 42 people are being aided by the red cross. they're homeless this morning. back to you. >> tracie strahan on staten i'd with that story, thank you. police are on th deadly accident in newark. we want to show you the aftermath of a violent car crash that killed at least one person. one car on its side crushed. police are trying to find two armed robbers who got trapped inside a cell phone store in paterson but escaped after a slow emergency response. surveillance video shows the men with guns approaching tommy

reporting a robbery in rio de janeiro after they vandalized a gas station restroom. one swimmer will be having to pay major cash before he's allowed to leave brazil. this settlement just coming out. >> it did. earlier this morning. jimmy feigen agreed to pay $10,000 to a once did he that, he will get his passport back and he can go home. the other three involved, they are already back in the united states. rio police are saying their story about being robbed at gun point was entirely made up. a story to cover up for the fact that they were the ones causing problems that night. even though lochte denied that when he was on the phone with the "today" show's matt lauer earlier this week.
them arriving back at olympic village. they claimed that they were robbed at gun point by member posing as police and that their wallets were stowingen. but that surveillance video of them arriving back at the village clearly shows them pulling out their wallets and showing them to security. now rio police say they vandalized a bathroom at the gas station they stopped at. when armed security asked them to pay for the damages, the athletes got aggressive, started a fight and police. the four of them paid $50 and left. the u.s. eoc issued a statement reading in part the behavior of these four is not acceptable. we apologize to our hosts in rio

speaking of alternates, alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect today. firefighters on the scene of a huge fire in staten island. that fire ripped through seven buildings along benzinger avenue. 250 firefighters at its height battling that fire into the night. itgutted two buildings that collapsed. so hot it melted the siding off of those homes. the red cross offering relief to dozens of people who are homeless. residents struggled to get to safety. >> i saw smoke, i said smoke. my cousin ran up to get them. they came down. >> that fire injured at least 20 people including firefighters. official says they worry other homes are in danger of collapsing. police are looking for the person who slashed a man trying to break up a fight in riverside park. police say it started when the 46-year-old victim came across
broadway. one of them had a child with him. when one man stepped in to help, the other man suffered a slash on the arm. communities could find it difficult to get to the queen center mall this weekend that's because queens boulevard main roadway will be closed outside of the mall between 57th avenue and 62nd drive. two lanes will be open to traffic on queens boulevard service roads. but the parking will be restricted. the closures start tonight at 11:00 p.m. and will go all the way through 5:00 a.m. monday crews will use that time to make repairs to the woodhaven boulevard bridge. one of the u.s. swimmers accused of lying about a robbery in rio will be on his way home today. new video shows jimmy feigen entering a brazil court. he settled his case by agreeing to pay more than $10,000 to a brazilian charity. his three other teammates including ryan lochte are back in the u.s. rio police say they flat outlayed about being robbed at

breaking news jersey. a serious crash involving two buses. >> kai simonsen is over the scene in chopper 4. what can you tell us? >> michael and darlene, just a second ago you saw one of the numerous victims being put into an ambulance and off to a local hospital. we count at least seven people injured or at least seven people being tended to by ems at this point. we don't know if that number will rise or not. you can see some of those victims, three of them still out here on this scene.
as i was saying earlier, i've been doing this for about 20 years, we rarely see accidents this severe, especially involving nj transit buses. two nj transit buses here. it happened at raymond boulevard and broad street. it appears like the bulk of the rescue operation at this point has concluded. now the priority is just to treat the victims. once again, at least seven injuries reported at this poent. there will be an accident down. the level of damage to that bus on the left hand portion of your screen. an accident investigation will be conducted. one of the things that i'm sure accident investigators will be asking about is whether or not that bus on the right was speeding at this point. again, it would defy logic if that bus wasn't or the other bus was. we're not sure how this accident happened. as we come out, a huge rescue
downtown newark. we'll keep you up to date. back over to you. >> just to give people perspective, this is at the tip of military park in newark. it looks like where this accident has happened, broad street running down south through military park and raymond boulevard cutting across it. this is a controlled intersection. there are light there's not there was a traffic violation, speed, somebody going through a red light. it's possible one of those buses was making a right, the other bus was going from the bottom end of your screen to the top. unless you're not allowed to make a right here, possibly they didn't violate that law going through a red light. again, speed, i have to keep thinking about speed here. that's a question i'm sure on everyone's mind. >> as we see, we're looking at
we want to be careful at this point, some companies do lease these buses. we're not sure who was operating the bus and what was happening. you mentioned before it does appear that the passengers, the bulk of the passengers, perhaps the only passengers were on that bus that seems to have the most damage. >> you know, we haven't been able to confirm that. we're looking at some of the victims about to be removed from the scene. over towards the left, going it does appear as though, though we cannot confirm, can't stress that enough, can't confirm that all of the passengers or the bulk of the passengers were on that bus from what we've been seeing here, that would suggest that. most of the victims have been removed from that bus on the left hand portion of your screen. we heard some scanner chatter a bit earlier as we were approaching the scene, the
driver was on board one of these buses, we're assuming the one on the right. we can't confirm that. that's just what we're hearing from the scanner. >> kai, thank you very much. we want to check in with lauren. we want to point out, new jersey transit saying on their twitter page, bus service in downtown newark experiencing delays and detours. >> absolutely. that's a big closure there. a lot of them heading towards newark and penn station will be affected by on the new york state thruway, two lanes still blocked between exits 12 and 11. delays are extensive. this is out by exit 14. they continue back past the garden state parkway. if you were planning on heading down to the george washington bridge, there's a disabled truck on the cross bronx expressway making that not the best ride either this morning. delays over the bridge are over 20 minutes. picking up a lot of alternate volume. to the western spur of the turnpike, an accident southbound
tunnel, an accident on 495 eastbound out by park avenue. once you get past that accident, it's about ten minutes into the tolls. like i said, 20 minutes at the george washington bridge at the upper level. at the holland tunnel, about a 15-minute wait into the tolls from both approaches. chris, bad news for traffic, much better news for weather. >> storm team 4 excited about stormranger 4, we have it at jacob riis park in the the uniqueness about this vehicle, compared to traditional radar where we have to wait for the storm to approach the radar, we take our truck out to the storms, and it has the ability to check the lower levels of the atmosphere. it's that part of the atmosphere where we see the severe weather develop, meaning circulations, tornadoes, down burst winds, heavy flooding rains, also can
sleet, hail, rain, snow or even things like dust particles and debris. with this particular truck, you can see all the technology on the side and inside we can adjust it depending upon the formation of the storm itself. we can let you know if it's heading into your neighborhood. very excited about that. this is day one of it. it will be out in your neighborhood from time to time as we continue to track things. skies are quiet. that's the way it will stay for the next few later this afternoon, stormranger 4 will have a little activity. 60s across eastern long island. mid 70s around the city. low to mid 60s in distant suburbs. a mixed sky of sun and clouds out there. at noon, some clouds, sunny breaks. a little later this afternoon, we pop a couple showers and storms. system of them might be close to riis park area. storm 4 will be out and about checking them out. we don't anticipate anything severe.
