right when i have to get the boys." stephanie: students who normally would have taken the bus home were stuck inside the school until their parents were able to come pick them up. teachers had a lot of quiet activities set up for them, while they were in there. many parents tell us they had to move around their schedules to get their kids, so they wouldn't be stuck in the school indefinitely. we'll have more on this story, tonight at ten. jack/2bam we're getting a look at the damage left behind southwest of the metro. local 5's nikki davidson is in winterset with the latest. nikki davidson: "yeah, guys, here in winterset we saw a lot of heavy winds today, and even some damage reported in the town. and i'm joined right now by the superintendent of winterset high school, dr. susie meade. susie, there's been some damage here on the campus. can you tell me about it? susie meade: " yeah, our damage was our football field scoreboard we had a roof on the softball dugout and then some assorted damage to a storage building. nikki davidson: and you told me earlier that you were actually in town when the storm passed through. what

was it like to be here during it it was very quick. we got a message shortly before 3 o'clock that we were under a tornado warning. we called all of our buildings and said to go under the procedures and probably within in a minute or so the event was over. but we did keep kids in shelter, until we were for certain that they were safe. and we held the buses for half an hour until we were sure that going out into the country would be safe for all of the students. i know, during november, this is not a time that anyone expects something like this to happen. it was kind of a time where you use your procedures that you put in place in the spring? yes, we certainly did and the nice thing is our emergency manager for madison county gave us a heads up saying that we had the potential for some severe weather and that put us on alert for today. and i know, lastly a lot of people are wondering what's next, as far the damage is concerned. how long is it going to take to repair it all? we're picking up the damage right now, we'll probably get together tomorrow and determine our

next steps. we have soccer practice and games in the spring, so we'll definitely want to have our scoreboard up in time and softball starts shortly, after so we'd like to have that by then. so, as soon as possible. thank you so much doctor. reporting in winterset nikki davidson for local five news we are iowa. stephanie: thanks nikki -- we're here now with chief meteorologist we're here now with chief meteorologist brad edwards -- what's the latest? brad: (ad libs) brad: let's take a look at we are iowa's most accurate forecast. brad here's a look at some of the damage in our here's a look at some of the damage in our area -- this one is from monroe. and in woodward -- some structure damage to a barn. but heres an interesting one in yorktown --

"when you don't lose a game... people notice. the iowa hawkeye football team's undefeated season so far has made an impression, everywhere. the team has gained national attention... even sparked an internet video war... (joe talks to his son
6:07 pm
about undefeated iowa) :46-:55 do they score a lot of points - no. do they have a championship level defense? no. then how can they be undefeated? i don't know. (talk to your kids about sec myth) :00-:06 we need to talk. what about? the sec is overrated. whether or not you agree, the hawks are now ranked 5th in the college football playoff rankings. hawkeye nation's jon miller defends their ranking. jon miller - 1:02:40 they're the only team in college football to have 2 road winds over top 25 teams, they hae a strong strength of schedule compared to other undefeated teams. just a week ago the hawks were at ninth in the rankings, so what do these high rankings say about a team? jon miller 1:02:59 they don't mean much right now for what eventually will happen the first week of december but it's certainly better to be 5th and 15th at this point in time. jon schaeffer 1:15 hold the phone just a little bit - #5 is great but you're still looking at a team that has to get through mn, ne, who just upset mich st. and aon top of that and ohio state... to go to college

football playoffs. local five sports director jon schaeffer says caution hawk fans: don't get too excited over a ranking - don't necessarily predict how a team will perform the rest of the season... but still, it's pretty cool. jon 2:40 it's very cool. hawkeye nation deserves to have something to be excited about. amanda krenz, local five news, we are iowa." jack: here's a look at iowa's remaining schedule-- they host minnesota and purdue back to back before the heroes game in lincoln nebraska on november 27th. watch local 5 for special updates on the heroes game. jack/2med coming up on local 5 news at six. we saw some pretty serious storms in central iowa -- chief meteorologist brad edwards is tracking the latest. stephanie: but next -- thanksgiving will be here before we know it! but could you be seeing a price jump for your

meteorologist brad edwards, and local 5 sports with sports director jon schaeffer. this is local 5 news at 6. we are iowa." stephanie: let's take a look at your consumer matters now... and turkey prices ahead of the holiday season. stephanie: this past spring... the avian flu started hitting farms all over the country... affecting northwest iowa especially hard. 72 commercial poultry farms were affected, forcing those bird producers -- including 35 commercial turkey flocks --
6:11 pm
to dispose of their flocks. stephanie/ram now, with thanksgiving right around the corner, some central iowa non-profits could feel the strain when it comes to donating thanksgiving day dinners. stephanie: just in time for the holidays -- turkey prices are about 30 to 40 percent higher. with turkeys in short supply, prices are going up and for the needy, that may mean cutting something else off the dinner list. with the number of turkeys donated each year variable, the food bank are worried this may hit close to home.. ""families in need really feel the impact of those price increases first. then, of course, through our purchasing program when our prices go up, it's the same thing... we aren't able to buy as much of something or maybe we choose not to buy it at all" says linda scheid, executive director, food bank of siouxland. local butchers are feeling an effect as well steve hein says just like gasoline, a price hike won't deter customers from buying a turkey for thanksgiving. the bigger problem is... not enough turkeys to go around. " "some of the product i'm trying to get... i'm having a real hard time with. like i said, price is a little higher but the biggest problem is not having the product" says steve hein,

manager, braunger's steak company. although we tend to think of it more around the holiday season, the food bank says it's important to keep the hungry in mind year round. stephanie/wxcdl: jack/wxcdl chief meteorologist brad edwards is here now... brad:wxcdl ( local 5 weather is coming up next. brad:wxcdl ( local 5 weather is coming up next. even higher. it will also get much colder tonight with some rain showers wrapping around this strong low pressure system. there is even a slight chance for some snow mixing in with the rain in western counties. after a couple of cool days, we will have a nice warm up this weekend. so, just stay safe tonight and all will be well! brad/2wx: that's all for my forecast. check out weareiowa.com for the latest in weather . stephanie/2wx: thanks brad. stephanie: snap a cool weather photo?
