go through a huge undertaking. stephanie/2shot a complete re- vamp of the state's medicaid system. jack: there are five weeks left before the new plan is supposed to start... january first. but there are issues. the packets have arrived -- but the plans aren't even in place. local five chief political correspondent amanda krenz is here to show you why it could be a smooth transistion -- or a disaster, amanda? amanda: there is a very high level of concern that this big change is going to result in disaster. and the impact is huge, 560- thousand iowans are part of the state's medicaid program. "iowans currently on medicaid received this packet in the mail. it tells them to choose an m- c-o - a managed care o oanization. there are four out- of-state mco's to choose from. greg 7:13 no other state in the country has tried to move to managed care in this compressed timeline. greg boattenhamer of the iowa hospital association says governor branstad's deadline of januarty 1st to change over the state's medicaid program is way too agressive. how do people know

which of these companies to pick? which one will include their current doctors and hospitals? well, they don't know. greg 5:58 it's challenging to know who to sign up with when the networks don't exist. the department of human services is working on a list of providers that have signed on with one of the companies, but hasn't released a number. only saying, " more providers are signing up every day, and we're working hard to remove any contracting barriers to make as smooth of a transition as possible for medicaid members and providers." 6:41 when we've contacted larger health care systems in the state, des moines metro hospitals, they've indicated they haven't signed contracts with any of the mco's. and that's a big worry with very little time left. 7:30 our concern is we get to january first and we have a train wreck on our hands that we don't know how to manage." amanda: here's another important point... the federal government has to give its approval before the state can

move forward with changing over medicaid. so far the feds their okay to do live in the studio, amanda krenz, local five news, we are iowa. stephanie: new at 5 ...from a hospital bed to a polk county courtroom. stephanie/1shot the man who was driving a car that crashed into a pole on ingersoll monday morning made his first appearance in he is charged with vehicular homicide and operating while intoxicated. was released from the hosptial tuesday and police same day and charged him. the car, you see here, was wrapped around a power pole. just a mangled mess left afterwards. it happened at the intersection of 35th street and ingersoll . the passenger, scalicity boyd, died at the scene. jack/1shot a woman is arrested in connection with the car crash on hubbell avenue earlier this month that left two men dead. deanna gliem is charged with two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, as well as two counts of vehicular homicide the crash happened on november 15th at east 37th and hubbell.

. police say gliem was heading south on hubbell when she hit the victims' car at the intersection. richard hummel and randall sonnenburg died on scene. their families held a vigil last weekend to bring awareness to that dangerous intersection. stephanie/otsr without a home just before thanksgiving. one person is out of their apartment after a fire earlier it happened at sun prairie west des moines us it started in the kitchen. about 14 people were evacuated. was from smoke and water inside the apartment. the product from the shelves. jack: hillary clinton is still holding strong in iowa. jack/otsl: she remains the number one choice for iowa democratic caucus goers. the latest quinnipiac poll puts clinton at 51 percent, with bernie sanders in second with 42 percent support. the poll results also reveal iowa democrats' position on allowing syrian refugees into iowa. and it's much different compared to what republicans say. here to break down those results is local 5's lucas casey. "that's right. in today's release from quinnipiac we see that 80 percent of the iowa democrats who were polled support accepting syrian refugees in iowa. in the political polling world, that's a pretty high rate of concensus, no matter what issue we're talking about. on the republican side - we saw an equal level of concensus, but on the opposite side of the issue. 82 percent of iowa republicans said they oppose accepting syrian refugees into the state. so... definitely one of the more politically divisive issues for iowans right now. in the digital media
