they were yesterday morning. there's already freeze warnings in effect until 8 o'clock this morning for the northwest suburbs and frost advisories in effect for the areas that you see in purple there in south jersey and in lancaster until 8 o'clock this morning and satellite6 and action radar showing we have clear skies, just one or two high clouds up above and that's why temperatures have really dropped this morning. even colder than yesterday. so, let's look at these numbers. it's just 29 in martins creek, below freezing in quakertown, sitting at the freezing mark now in pottstown. that's a new number. they degrees in coatesville. 32 in oxford. 35 in saint davids. a little better as you might expect in center city, 41 degrees. in the suburbs in new jersey hovering right around freezing in ewing and browns mills, 33, 34 in cinnaminson and glassboro, 38 vineland and 38 in dover delaware. this afternoon temperatures are going to be below average. cooler than they were yesterday. but we'll have lots of sunshine. so, it's certainly a pretty day. by 7:00 a.m., 41.

by 9:00, 45. by lunchtime, you can get outside, walk around with the jacket, 52. it will feel pretty good with the sun angle being high this time of year so by 3:00 p.m., fifty seven. by 5:00 p.m., 58. if you want numbers better than that wait until you see the seven-day forecast. we have a nice new trend coming up in the weather department. details on that in a minute matt. >> i think i'm going like those numbers. good morning karen. good morning, everybody. our numbers are starting to go down on 95. the speeds are starting to do that now that we're in the 6 o'clock hour. you can see the delay just beginning to form here in the southbound lanes entering the work zone at cottman avenue. it's going to slow again then farther south entering the work zone at girard and northbound approaching girard we're just getting word of a broken down vehicle. so we'll be keeping tabs on that for those of that you travel along 95. no problems so far for those of you that travel on the schuylkill. you might want to use 76 or the mlk drive for the next half hour as they continue that repaving work on the kelly drive. crews will be out there until

6:30 for the next half hour. the police activity we had in west philadelphia at 60th and vine wrapped up. everything reopened there but now getting word of a water cooler in the roadway in upper providence along egypt road at black rock road. watch it as you travel through that area. and on the turnpike eastbound in chester county still have two of our three work zones with restrictions continuing in that neck of the woods. meanwhile over here in brick township still have the overturned vehicle crash on the garden state parkway southbound. all lanes blocked approaching 549. 34 and 70 your alternates on this wednesday morning. matt. >> thank you matt. breaking right now, the biggest verizon strike in nearly five years is on. union members have been working without a contract since last summer. "action news" reporter annie mccormick is lie in chinatown amongst some of these striking workers with what's going on now. annie. >> reporter: matt, this started just about 20 minutes ago. now 40,000 employees will be strike at two dozen locations across the east coast. here in philadelphia, there's

about 2000 workers that are out here. they have not been working with -- they haven't had a contract, rather, since august and that is one of the reasons why they are striking. take a look behind me. you can see now how they're organized over here. right now workers at odds with verizon are members of the communications workers of america and the international bother hood of electrical workers. they represent installers, customer service and repairmen. verizon wireless is not affected by this strike. now, there are the common contract negotiation issues at hand like wages, job security and healthcare pensions, but we are told by both members of the unions their core issue is about jobs going overseas. take a listen. >> our issues are the jobs. the work that is generated by this company should be performed in our local communities by company employees. what the company wants to do is subcontract the work to out of state contractors who are in the call center environment sometimes out of state or out of the country.

>> reporter: back out here live verizon says that they spent 10 months working to can come to an agreement. they say they aren't taking this strike lightly. they say they have proposed a 6.5 percent wage increase affordable healthcare and competitive retirement benefits including a match to their 401k. cwa and ibew say those are not the major issues at hand that they want to talk about at the table. they want to talk about those jobs going overseas. we are told that everybody was briefly at the table at some point yesterday only for about two hours but they were not able to talk about the issues that they feel are most important. now, verizon also said that they have trained a number of nonunion workers to fill these jobs during the time of the strike however long it may be. for now reporting live in chinatown, annie mccormick channel6 "action news." >> annie thank you for that. it is 6:05 and police now tell "action news" that it was a coughing fit that caused a school bus driver to lose control of the vehicle yesterday afternoon in north

philadelphia. the bus hit two parked vehicles ativan pelt and diamond streets. two special needs students were checked out at the hospital. they have been released. >> a pair of huge bronze doors worth $25,000 are missing from a mausoleum at a philadelphia cemetery. police believe the doors were stolen from laurel hill early yesterday morning. the doors stand about 6 feet tall and weigh 800 pounds each. the cemetery's ceo emphasizes the monetary value of those stolen items is not the real issue. >> we are here to take permanent care of families and that's our job and for someone to think that they can just come in and take away somebody's entire history is unthinkable. >> investigators are checking salvage yards to see if the crooks sold the doors for cash. >> oil prices have us wondering about future gas prices. maribel aber is live at times square with more on that and other market stories.

it was a broken down vehicle northbound approaching girard. but they got that towed away. penndot came out, saved the day. so, cross that one off the list. we also had a broken down vehicle in norristown close to eisenhower middle school along marcmark cle at coolidge. now we have to get rid of the water cooler. delays on 422 eastbound not too bad just yet. just some building volume but westbound on 422 in the pottstown area, expect big delays during the midday. this new restriction started yesterday. it's lasting about a couple weeks. starting at 8 o'clock each morning, 422 westbound goes down to just one lane so at that point i think high street or 724 would be better bets. i'd avoid 422 westbound during mid days and a new water main work started this week in a couple spots. one here in elkins park where they're closing church road

9:00 until 3:00 through the end of august. 73 gets you around that. in media from 9:00 until 3:00 through the end of may working on the water main. matt. >> a grandmother has quite a story to tell here. she was stranded for nine days in the arizona desert. 72-year-old ann rogers was driving to phoenix to visit her grand kids and ran out of gas somewhere in the wilderness. rogers says she's always prepared and carries food and water in her car but ended up running out of supplies and turned to survival mode. hear what she did next. >> i also decided when i found an elk carcass bleached white long gone, 12-point rack, pulled that out on the sandy beach, pointed it towards a big sign that said help with an exclamation point made out of white stones and sticks. >> on day nine, she heard the sound she had been waiting for a helicopter coming to her

hardly a cloud in the sky. it's just picture perfect out there today. but it is cold. look at these numbers. we dipped to 28 in martins creek, 30 in quakertown, 32 in pottstown. 33 in coatesville. below freezing in oxford. 34 in saint davids. 41 degrees, little better in the city itself and some of the suburbs in new jersey we have equally chilly numbers. they in browns mills and ewing, 34 in glassboro and 39 in dover, delaware. and that's why the national weather service still has that freeze warning in effect for the northwest suburbs, the area you see highlighted in the light blue. kind of the bluish purple there is the frost advisory for lancaster and areas in south jersey where those temperatures hovering just above the freezing mark. slowly things will improve but even in the height of the afternoon temperatures below average today. it's at least beautiful. mostly sunny skies. by 7:00 a.m. 41. by 9:00 a.m., 45. by noon, we're up to 52. by 3:00 p.m., 57. by 5:00 p.m., 58. that's your high for today. so normally we would be about 63, not touching that today.

but temperatures are are going to soar well above average in the seven-day period so we've got a nice change coming your way. details on that in just a few minutes matt. >> i can see that bright sunshine out there this morning. we do expect sun glare delays for sure karen and some delays in a few other spots because of a few other issues. there's a crash now here on 95 in bucks county. these are the southbound lanes between street road and woodhaven road. this is one of the vehicles involved. i believe this is the exit for the cornwells heights park and ride right here and you can see that vehicle having a little bit of a tough time getting around the penndot truck that's attending to the car involved in the accident. but in the main lanes, not really too much of a delay associated with this accident. the delay kicks in farther south from academy through this point at cottman. again, the betsy ross bridge into girard, 10 minutes so far and that's just normal morning volume. starting to see a little bit of volume here as well on the roosevelt boulevard extension southbound approaching the schuylkill. also have a disabled vehicle right there on the northbound side just beyond the ridge avenue on-ramp but it's off to the side so not really causing

a big problem. starting to see a crowd here on 42 coming northbound away from 55 up to 295 but the pace so far isn't too terrible. however, if you're out and about in brick township this morning, you are going to find a jam on the garden state parkway. that's because southbound approaching 549 all lanes are blocked because of a nasty overturned vehicle crash. 34 and 70 your way to get around that on this wednesday morning. tam. >> thank you matt. breaking news. local verizon workers went on strike about 30 minutes ago. contract talks have started last year have broken down so now union members are out there on the picket line trying to tell management can you hear me now? positions in the meantime however long this strike may last. for now reporting live in chinatown, annie mccormick, channel6 "action news." back to you. >> thanks so much annie. two men are wanted for a violent carjacking in the city's west kensington section. they shot and pistol whipped a father who was waiting for his son. the beat down and carjacking happened on bodine street yesterday afternoon. police say while the man was waiting for his 13-year-old the crooks pulled him from his truck struck him and shot him in the neck. they eventually abandoned the stolen truck along north randolph street. police are currently checking the truck for fingerprints. no arrests have been made in the case. a former camden firefighter has been convicted of disability fraud. 41-year-old shane streater claimed he suffered back and neck injuries while on duty. youtube video shows otherwise. investigators found it showing streater working as a martial arts instructor and taking part in competitive mma fights. at the same time he collected $82,000 in benefits.

streater faces up to 10 years in jail. a bill to legalize medical marijuana in pennsylvania faces one more hurdle. the state senate made minor changes to the legislation and sent it back to the house yesterday. there are no assurances, though, that the lower chamber will pass the new version today before going on recess. governor tom wolf promised to sign it if it reaches his desk. >> kobe bryant will play his final game in front of a sellout crowd in los angeles tonight. the lakers retiring after a 20 year career and it started rider here on our local courts when he was a star for lower merion high school. the los angeles rail stop for the staples center is going to be called kobe station for the day. if you wanted to see the game, well, hope you really wanted to see it because ticket prices have skyrocketed on stub hub. according to espn, one fan bought a pair of court side seats for $27,000 each. they must not have a wife. as for kobe the future hall of

weekend it culminates with that beautiful and we brought in our always on day planner. look at these numbers it's 41 degrees right now in philadelphia but in the mid 30's in the lehigh valley. they have degrees in millville. remember yesterday morning? what a big difference this is. look at these numbers. 20 degrees colder right now in philadelphia than it was at this point yesterday. 23 degrees colder in trenton. 24 degrees colder in dover. that's a big change in 24 hours. so, make sure you're dressed differently this morning. you'll want to grab that coat cold out that. satellite6 and action radar showing it's pretty at least. hard al cloud in the sky. it's really nice. that rain from yesterday morning well out of here. we have high pressure that's going to be overhead and really staying above, too, giving us the nice conditions. so, mostly sunny today. temperatures below average. 58 degrees for your high. normally we hit a high about 63. so, by 8:00 a.m., 43. by 10:00 a.m., 51 degrees. by lunchtime, it won't feel bad with the sun angle this time of year it's kind of high. it makes it feel good even

though the temperature is below average. 3:00 p.m. 57, a little breezy. by 5:00 p.m. 58 degrees. let's look towards tomorrow. this high shifts ever so slightly to the northeast and it stays bright and just a touch milder, 62 degrees for your high so still below average tomorrow but look at the seven-day forecast 'cause things really change for us. today we're in the 50's in the afternoon. 58 degrees. so, it's mostly sunny but it's cool even in the afternoon, cooler than average. tomorrow a bit milder. we make it up to 62. great for the phils. what a week for the phils. it's pretty dry and looking good with sunshine. wifi, nice and sunny, 64. by saturday, we're up to 67, lots of sunshine. sunday beautiful and warm, 74. so, remember last weekend we had snow showers. this weekend we're talking 70's. monday even warmer. chasing 80. 79 degrees for your high. that's ahead of front. when the front comes through monday night i think we'll see showers around and then on tuesday a passing shower with that as well but it stays pretty mild even on tuesday we're talking 70 degrees which is above average for this time

>> chopper six is live over breaking news. quite a story to tell you about what happened over the last couple hours here in west philadelphia. this is the 300 block of north edgewood street. police arrived to reports of gun shots in the neighborhood. when they arrived they saw a man looking out a window from a house. so they set up a perimeter. they got into the house and they found who they thought was looking outside, a 22-year-old man. he had been shot twice. they rushed him to the hospital where he died. they continued searching the property and they say they found another guy hiding in a rear end. he was taken into custody. it's unclear if he's facing charges but police in west philadelphia have another homicide on their hands to investigate. >> what a morning. let's go on over to matt pelman who is looking at the volume out there as it begins to really build. good morning, matt. >> yeah, delays are no longer

hidden that is for sure. they're in plane sight along the schuylkill expressway. you can see them in both directions by the roosevelt boulevard. normal stuff, though, but westbound's backing up from the boulevard out to gladwyne. eastbound already slowing from the blue route into the curve. again from this point near city avenue on into girard. again, just volume but it is heavy volume for sure. same is true on 95. 18 miles per hour southbound by cottman. then just in the 20's between the betsy ross bridge and girard because of the big verizon protest i would avoid ninth at race. you can see police activity around there because of the protests and of course walnut lane bridge remains closed until september. i know that's been a headache for some of you over the last few weeks. a couple earlier issues in norristown and upper providence. they've cleared out. we're just starting to delays along 422. speeds now in the 20's by trooper road. and if you're traveling to jeffersonville in montgomery county today, good day to do that because president thomas jefferson was born on this day

>> we've got break news from west philadelphia. a standoff with police ended with a man dead and one man arrested. >> we showed you view from chopper six. katherine scott is live on the ground for us. katherine. >> reporter: matt and tam i did just speak with police. they got the latest details. they have one man in custody and one man has died after the standoff this morning in west philadelphia. here, this is the scene right now. you can see this street edgewood is closed off. it happened in that gray home right there. you can see there's an opened window there. that's the home where this all took place this morning and we're hearing this was a vacant house often used by squatters. police believe there could have been some illegal activity done that in the past but this happened this morning on the 300 block of edgewood in west philadelphia and it started around 4:30 when neighbors heard gun shots. when police arrived they saw a man, he was inside the house looking outside. so officers went to the back and the front of the home.

they knocked on the doors. but he didn't come outside and since they had already known that there had been gun shots inside the home, they called in the swat team. swat arrived. they set up a perimeter and after a short time they went inside and they discovered a man dead on the floor inside the front porch right when they opened the door. he was shot twice. police rushed him to presbyterian hospital where he was pronounced dead. swat searched the property and they found a man hiding in the back. he was taken into custody. the relationship between the two men, how they know each other police haven't yet said. but the one man who is now being considered a suspect in this homicide is being investigated -- is being interviewed by detectives. we are live in west philadelphia, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." >> katherine thank you for that. and now we're going to go to a preview of "gma." >> and amy robach delivers for us live at the "gma" studios. what's going on, amy. >> reporter: hey, matt, hey, tam. great to be with you on this wednesday. coming up next we're talking
