it was a bittersweet first day of school for a little boy from amarillo, texas. his father, a police officer, died two weeks ago after an

on-duty car crash. his second family, the men and women in blue stepped in. >> reporter: the first day of preschool for a 4-year-old named jackson with pictures. >> stand up i n front of everybod that's good. >> reporter: and with his mom's encouragement, but also something else. owing to the fact that his dad was not there. that's because the amarillo cop was in an auto collision several months back. it looked like he would pull through, but he did not. he died two weeks ago. which led to this moment in the school parking lot. >> today has been an emotional day. >> reporter: when his dad's other family, his police family made sure to be there for the sendoff. >> he was shocked and so excited. >> reporter: and jackson's face, when he realized it was for him and done out of love for his dad. >> he was always pitching in to lend a hand. offering to do something for you. even this last year when he was in such pain and not able to even walk on his own sometimes. >> reporter: yep. quite the first day of school.

cyclists on a nationwide mission stopped in philadelphia today. bike for friendship is riding from san diego to new jersey to benefit people with special needs. during the 3100 mile journey these cyclists stopped in 40 cities to meet with local chapters of the friendship circle that connects teenage volunteers to those with special needs. the philadelphia chapter is planning a local ride this winter. ♪ it was a slice of ukrainian culture today in orson. dancing and culture were part of the annual ukrainian folk
